Thank you for your instructions! I've been using the clutches for 3 weeks now for very short trips to the bathroom, and I just realised they needed to be readjusted. I'm also feeling brave enough to give the stairs a try after watching this.
I just had foot surgery that may necessitate crutches for up to 12 weeks. I haven't used crutches in 53 years so this is starting all over for me. Very useful and understandable video. Thanks
@@AaronTheEagle1 remember to lean a little bit backwards when going down and forward when going up. Cuz falling forward when going down is a nono lol. Start going up and down while holding the two crutches together and the railing before trying to go full crutch mode.
Excellent and very helpful video...You covered everything I needed to know...I found out today I have a cracked kneecap and will be in a brace w/ crutches and a wheelie chair for 6 weeks...I cant bear any weight on my injured knee at all while it is healing...Thanks so much for your awesome video...I was really scared to try the stairs, but I cant wait to tackle it tomorrow and not have to be so dependent on others to help me get around....
@katiematey456 Well you can, but I really don't recommend doing so; because your foot needs time to rest itself and plus it hurts like hell when you put weight on it, so it's really hard to just force pain on yourself
This is very accurate. I have a genetic condition called Patella Alta/Patella Femoral Syndrome, which is basically where my knee cap sits up way too high and also moves around in directions it shouldn't. I have known about it for about 10 years now and been on crutches several times, one time I was on them a year and a half. I was on them that long because at the time they, for the life of them, could not figure out what the problem was. 6 days ago, to be exact, I had a lateral release arthroscopy surgery done so now I'm on crutches yet again.
Thank you for sharing I really hate to use crutches but my apartment is to small to use my knee scooter. I'm stuck with my crutches for the next 6 weeks. And I think what makes it difficult for me is going down the stairs since I hate heights. But i liked the video so hopefully it works.
I was warded at KTPH in between 2011-2012 (warded 2 weeks each on 2 occasions. 1st due to Calcaneal fracture & undergo ORIF with metal plate and screws fixation. 2nd was Acute Osteomyelitis & undergo surgery to remove metal plate and screws, 7 debridement sessions and drain abscess due to built up white blood cells which led to infection, skin graft and 2 months of PICC antibiotics & NPWT to 'vacumm suck' the impurities out of my 'hole in ankle' wound and at same time repair back the loss of muscle parts). Gruelling sessions for me back then but managed to walk back in 2 months on each of the 2 occasions. KTPH has the best facilities and the staffs are friendly. I can still remember the nurses, therapist and ortho surgeons's names 😎
Sorry for the delay I was checking with our physio. Getting off from a chair without arms would be similar to how it is shown on the video. Instead of pushing down on the arm rest, use the seat to push off with the other arm pushing down on the crutch's hand pad.
I like to just play with crutches but my stairs really high so I went down my crutches on the stairs and I fell my head but I didn't get hurt bad. Kids if you have crutches be safe don't do this 👍
Jenna Gautier hahahah i used to love playing with my sisters crutches and i did the exact same thing. i’m here now because i broke my ankle and i don’t want to fall on my head at school
Going up and down stairs with crutches is challenging because it can be hard to balance so it's important to do it slowly and carefully. Another way to do it is to go up and down on your bottom but it's not easy to do if your whole leg is damaged (rather than just your foot) and it's not practical when outside (because you'll end up with dirty clothes!)
you probably wont see this anymore but i might hazard a try. will it worsen the situation if you keep hitting your bad leg, my foot is in full cast and heel bone is fractured and i worry that if i rest my bad foot on the floor im applying pressure or weight on it ? thank you for being a blessing and sharing this video with the bad leg side of the internet ! :~)
Distance of the crutch ANTERIORLY is 6 inches, 2 inches laterally for ideal BOS. If patients will do as you say by placing the crutch 6 inches sidewards, they are gonna fall.
Interesting to see how differently crutches look like in different countries. The ones I use look nothing like yours. But regarding stairs I must say they're a nightmare if you aren't strong in the arms and core.
When using crutches, make sure your wrists support your weight not your armpits - the upper arms should only clamp the top of the crutches to keep them stable.Nerve irritation in the armpit can cause numbness or pins and needle feeling over your arms/ fingers. All these signs and symptoms should go away once there is no more irritation of the nerve. If your armpits are still sore after using crutches properly and you are concerned, please speak to your doctor.
Thank you so much I couldn't find how to use crutches. I really needed to know how to do this because I will have to go to school tomorrow and 4/6 of my classes I have to go up stairs. By the way if you want to know how I hurt my leg it was that I was riding my box bike down a hill and I lost control (yes I was wearing a helmet) and my foot ended up in the bike frame and I fractured my leg in 2 places. Any way thanks for your help.
Glad this helped - wishing you a speedy recovery : )

Thanks
Tried the stair part and busted my shit.
🤣
Fr I'm scared to do it
Going downstairs is okay but going upstairs I have landed each time on the injured ankle which hurt. I cannot get the upstairs.
Funny thing is that I can do upstairs like it’s nothing. Downstairs is the scary part, so I have yet to try that.

Thank you so much. I broke my knee a few days ago and it's been a struggle
Thank you! I broke my foot, and have never used crutches before. A clear and helpful instruction.

Dani Christian I mean you can but if it’s a super bad sprain you need crutches
@katiematey456 Well you can, but I really don't recommend doing so; because your foot needs time to rest itself and plus it hurts like hell when you put weight on it, so it's really hard to just force pain on yourself
Great informational video and demonstration. Thank you.
That's a 3-step stairs. Imagine doing that on a hiiiigh stairs. I'd end up breaking my neck by the end of it

lots of chairs don't have arm rest. how to stand/sit with crutches on that situation? given that your other lower extremity is non-weight bearing.
Sorry for the delay I was checking with our physio. Getting off from a chair without arms would be similar to how it is shown on the video. Instead of pushing down on the arm rest, use the seat to push off with the other arm pushing down on the crutch's hand pad.
Wish I would have seen this video weeks ago. Great job with it.
