    I'd be a bit more concerned, but considering that this titanic monster from beyond the stars was beaten by a naked old man with a whip, an old man with leprosy, an old man with a mace, and an old man with a dog, I'm not really that worried about it.

      He can't awaken the beast without enough blood to soak the soil. So he needs to restock the ruined structures around him with new monsters, bosses, and money. Then he has to bring someone who can convince people capable of sedating the beast again to come and fight, who are most likely (they could be driven insane) supported by your ancestor's ghosts who succeeded in sedating the monster in the past. The longer he does this, the less and less likely he will win.

      What leaves me wondering is if there is really no power that can counter the heart and is of a more divine nature because, where does the Vestal get her powers from if not the Light? In the case the light is also a manifestaion of the heart, why none of it's acolytes seem to use it? all other healing methods aside from that either rely on medicine or is magic that involves a cost or a risk. I think one of the fish minions had support abilities but, you get my point...
      It's always possible that the Light is actually the virus of the planet, the accidental cancer that should not have happened and goes against what always was the true extent and purpose of the heart. Oh well, just another fatalist thought to add to the bowl.

      The true beings of Lovecraft arent Immortal, as universe itself is made around em and they were before and will be after.
      They are to be beings of something more yet less- its impossible to say, so no.
      Even if they could be made into other games, to their lore you would have to become one, or to go to where they are- in the gap of reality and material fabric to kill em.

      Well, it's size is cosmic, which is bigger than the flesh which is basically a giant room full of pig body parts, so I imagine it isn't that small, but at the same time, we fights its immune system, and those are freaking gigantic, so yeah, probably the heart is just one of the many that was awake, and when a number of them beat the thing wakes up, which is pretty hopeless considering one mistake, one death, one second of hesitation means the end of mankind, so yeah

    I think the ending is left up to the individual! Some people will always be doom and gloom and always think everything is helpless and succumb to the darkness. But I for one am the opposite. I completed the full game and was obsessed with the story!
    I say the ending is you were successful in responding to your grandpas letter, and stopped whatever thing he succumbed to unleash. Lots of people died for the cause but thats a small price to pay for protecting the world. And the thing just has sounded like your grandpa towards the end to try to get you to succumb to it. To give up. To let it destroy everything. After all thats why it takes your grandpas form towards the end.
    You have taken your leave from the place, abandoning it, letting it rot to move on. While visiting it now and then to make sure the horror is gone. Maybe await its return some generations later. But for now.... Peace. You get in your stagecoach, honoring the fallen, knowing what you did here may never be remembered with all who fell. But your alive and will spread the word and message. And with that, Ditching the letter your grandpa sent on the road side. Thinking of the first words he wrote to you. "ruin has come to our family" and ride away.

Those tombstones could be built in the first place because they sacrificed themselves to give others the chance to build them. So life in the planet can continue existing.

    I have to mention it because I couldn't find any theory about it in the comments, but did no one else think that the ruin that has come at the end is not the letter nor the monster, but the adventurers ?
    Driven mad from watching the thing slumber thoughout vain attempts at stopping it, the heir commits suicide, and destroys as much knowledge as possible in the hope of letting the secret go undisturbed, even abandoning the hamlet in that futile hope...
    But then another petty noble comes in pursuit of glory and gold, another batch of adventurers spill their blood in the corrupted lands, waking more of the unending evil that taints the region, merely offering the thing another chance to arise...
    Where do all the monsters come from ? How are there even bandits, madmen and villagers alive in this region ? The monsters are not trying to overtake the world or spread destruction and chaos :
    The demons possessing the swinefolk are mindless, the cove's inhabitants seemingly pursue other goals and even trade with terrestrians, the undead are untiring workers and the cultists are deluded by their god ! If human morals had any truth to them, the monsters would be victims. It is not good versus evil, and the heir eventually comes to that realization.
    Other monsters and the corrupted nature itself are under direct control of the thing : they do not leave their homes. Their numbers never thin. The most powerful ones are also the deepest, and only face the bravest of adventurers.
    The thing is not trying to fight for its survival of power. It is lazily luring humanity to itself, in a disdainful mockery of free will. When the heir comes to this realization, when he understands that coming here was a fundamental mistake, he tries to go back, and truly the ending is as good as it possibly could : everything is reversed to its most desirable state for mankind, when few people were aware, and fewer were interested.
    You were just playing in the wrong direction, and the game offered you a chance not to commit that mistake again.

      Alessia Aikley That is just a human conception of how things work. It doesn't go like that for most parts in reality. In many cases, when there's something bad happening, it tends to escalate very rapidly without an equally strong brake in sight.
      Also, you can never quite consider Lovecraftian horrors to be evil. They are less Satan and more natural disasters. Just as how you can't apply an equal opposite force to keep a storm from making landfall, cause floods and landslides and exacerbate the damage more and more in an escalating series of events, you can't just conjure a big good to stop a Cosmic Horror from damaging things just by walking around or stretching some limbs.
      You can start throwing in resources to fix things and gradually restore order and infrastructure operation, but only after the storm has passed. You can put up barriers to soften the blow of the storm. However, a Cosmic Horror is akin to a storm of an unimaginable scale and never goes away.

    • @Punishthefalse
      @Punishthefalse 8 років тому +14

      Alessia Aikley And a hurricane is still a storm.
      Point being that on a physics standpoint, a force is always counteract by an opposite force e.g. friction and inertia. However, this does not necessarily apply to things of human conception. How many times had we seen villains doing whatever without comeuppance?
      So a storm, or a superstorm, you can't stop it by any kind of human acts, it has to go away by itself as it eventually is drained of the energy needed to sustain itself (sped up by landmass). At best you can slow it down and control the damage it's going to bring. Cosmic horrors operate in a similar manner, except in this case, no, mere mountains won't really slow it down due to how overwhelming it is. If mountains can't stop them from breaking things just by stretching a tentacle or whatever, what can humans do?
      LIke it or not, reality is the universe was and has always been unfeeling and apathetic. Justice and morals is something we come up with to keep our society in working order (as society is what allows humans to survive for as long as it did). Lovecraftian stories bring that idea up to its ultimate conclusion, by making us even smaller than ever by pitting us against things that are incomprehensibly mightier and greater, be it the Yithians and their science that is indistinguishable from magic to Azathoth which is more akin to the very fabric of the universe made living than an actual creature.

    • @Punishthefalse
      @Punishthefalse 8 років тому +5

      Alessia Aikley And that sun could eventually be swept away by an even larger Cosmic Horror, so yes, it does go both ways.
      So far we only found one planet that fosters any life. We are standing on it. Whether the universe nurtures life is still up for debate.

    So... you beat the heart of everything or creation itself... but you can't REALLY kill it or escape it so eventually the stars align and it wakes up anyway and blows up the planet despite your best efforts and then the great THING awakens and recreates all of existence. Okay that makes enough sense.
    But then the game implies that it is YOU the relative to the original ancestor that perpetuates the cycle... but you died when the world was remade... so that can't be you. If they're implying that the world is made in the exact same way, then it's still the Ancestor who is causing all the problems in the Hamlet just another incarnation of him. And you would still be a relative of the Ancestor undoing his mistakes.
    And if you become like your ancestor after you "slay" the Thing that doesn't make much sense. Because the Ancestor told you all his mistakes and you spent so much time correcting his mistakes and learning from his failures. How could you forget what happened and do the EXACT same thing? Like Do you also hire the brigand 12 pounder? Do you sacrifice another waif to the sea? Hire another crew of pirates to scour the land for relics?
    I just really don't understand the implication that you repeat your Ancestors mistakes, if someone understands this can you please explain it to me? I'm confused.

      scoople6 When you beat it, you never actually kill it. It goes back into slumber, waiting for the stars to align to attempt an escape once more. This is the futile cycle the ancestor talks about: adventurers, going to the hamlet again and again, only delaying the inevitable, until one slip up happens and the earth blows up.
      In the end you hear the narrator say the opening line of the game: « Ruin has come to our family. » and the game starts again. This implies this is the next batch of adventurers coming to delve in the Darkest Dungeon, only to start the cycle once more.

Yeah that checks out.
      Just from the cinematic imagery they make it seem like YOU become the ancestor, saying that you take up the vigil, showing the opening sequence as if YOU were now the ancestor writing the letter and shooting yourself thus setting up the cycle again. @@TheSpitefulSword nah the characters seem to be the same. Maybe while we're fighting in the hamlet the rest of society collapsed and went full mordheim since we see some of the hero's fighting in a ruined city.

    I don't know about you guys but I'd prefer if the Hamlet went back to normal and the ghost merely warned you that it is an endless cycle of the folly of man and eventually another will have to stand up and repeat what you did in a meaningless struggle that will eventually be lost. I mean that's basically what they do already but they didn't have to show it being repeated instantly

    • @italowizard
      @italowizard 7 років тому +27

      I think it's a timelapse. That it doesn't literally go back instantly, but they're showing fastforwarded what it'll look like in a couple decades, when the next cycle starts (presumably it gets ruined faster than a normal hamlet would due to monsters and such)

      Perhaps the Ghost is the leader of the last fight against the Darkest Dungeon and the Heart, the player who managed to give us, the great family of man, a bit more time to live. The ghost leads you to the Hamlet so the cycle can continue for without it, we are all lost and doomed. They seek to guide the next one to take their place in the Ancestor's plan before fading away, hoping that Man can once again live to see a new dawn.

    There's likely multiple hearts that rouse "the thing" when they start beating and bring about the apocalypse. Killing that single heart was about as useful as throwing a tiny pebble into the infinite ocean. You didn't make a wave against the darkness, just a pathetic ripple

    i dont think people understand how poetic what the ending is seek solace in a matter befitting your lineage. This was pretty stupid, it was a cop out to make it eternal, dragon's dogma did it right (sorta), but killing the heart of darkness and having it not matter really felt like a diss. I won't even play a second campaign because wow

      It based on Lovecraftian god, just like Cthulhu and Azathoth, you can injured Cthulhu and made him sleep in the ocean all you want but it won't matter he will wake up someday, outer god can try to not waking up Azathoth all they want in the end he will wake and everything will disappear. That's the true horror of the inevitable

    And this breaks rule #7 in my personal "Things Enjoyable Games Do" list: "Your efforts must amount to something." Say what you will about the journey and destination, I feel the stress this games puts on you, the player, should have some payoff.

    • @xcyzvvv2346
      @xcyzvvv2346 7 років тому +59

      IMO the "payoff" is knowing you delayed the absolute destruction of planet Earth, along with everything we know and hold dear. Even if it's just for a brief period of time, that's time you gave to the denizens of Earth and/or their posterity.

      You don't know how Lovecraftian horror works then.

    • @AnnNightNoxana
      @AnnNightNoxana 6 років тому +7

      But the fact the struggle means nothing is the very *point* of the game. You start off fresh, knowing nothing of the land bestowed upon you. And as you plunge further into the madness, the terrors the Ancestor had to endure slowly begin to take their toll on you; ordinary townsfolk are turning into horrific beings, but you keep pushing onward towards the inevitable. And in the end, you realize that the horrors you've endured are too much for you to bear, thus sealing your fate as that of the Ancestor.
      I don't want to come across as arrogant, but I think you've missed the point entirely if you don't feel satisfied with the game's ending. You weren't immersed, you just wanted to see what the game -- rather than its narrative -- had to offer. You didn't think of your characters as *people*, you just saw them as tables full of numbers and variables. And I'm not saying that's wrong, that's literally the point of the game, but it's the narrative itself that makes Darkest Dungeon such a horrific and depressing game.
