- KTM 790 Duke - I've been lucky enough to have borrowed the 790 for the last couple of weeks to play around on from KTM UK. I've fully tested the bike and now it's time for me to let you know what I think of KTM's newest middleweight naked.

the recording device in your backpack was genius! couldnt stop watching. loved hearing the rumble of that exhaust
I own this bike. At the moment I`ve made about 2000km on it and it is really fun bike for twisty roads, powerful enough, practical... driving is a pleasure. But it is one problem...it just wants to go fast :-)
Did you had any major issues on the ktm after a while? Like electronic failures, leaks? I’m about to get one in 2 months brand new one. I’m only a little bit sceptical about reliability but thats not a deal breaker.
@@Snotroggel453 Yes I have. I have transmission oil leak. Not much, but it was disturbing. They replaced the seals and now it is not leaking for about 7000km.
The only thing I'll change on mine are the tyres. The standard ones are below par on track, but OK on the road. Suspension is fine for my 104kg. Quickshifter / auto-blipper is brilliant though it smoother to use the clutch at low speeds. Motor is a peach. This is in a different league to the MT-09 in terms of handling especially on track. You will never get a MT-09 to handle as well as this and I know cos I had one and tried all sorts of things. In the end I gave up and bought the KTM instead! Most fun bike I've ever had. Perfect blend of light weight and useable power. You really don't need 150bhp plus to have fun. Bonus for me is comfort. I'm 6' 3" and with the optional comfort seat it is all day comfortable. Bars are adjustable forwards / backwards so the ergonomics are bang on. The Street Triple 765 was on my shopping list too but for me it was a little too small. If I was a smaller rider it would be tight between the KTM and the Street Triple R. The MT-09 comes nowhere near. The only issue, as is often the case with KTMs is build quality / reliability. I've had a small oil leak from the output shaft fixed under warranty. Check the KTM forums - there are several others reporting this and other niggles. It was then fine for a few months but now it has come back, so I'm off back to the dealer again in a couple of weeks. It's not catastrophic but it is annoying. Jap bikes (or Triumphs for that matter) just don't do that. With any other bike I'd be thinking "do I get rid of it?", but this is so good I cannot think of another bike I'd rather have right now!
I disagree about the quick shifter/ auto blipper. Compared it to my own down shifts and mine were smoother and better. Suspension is a bit firm but I wouldn't change it. The whole machine seems to have been optimized for my size and weight and my only complaint is how much trouble it's going to get me in if I approach its limits on the street.
So glad they brought this bike back. I have a Duke 390 and I just got my full licence. I'll stick with the 390 for a while longer but at some point I'll upgrade and so far the 790 is on the top of my list. The 890 looks awesome too but might be a bit too much power going from the 390 and also a bit more expensive. Dunno, I guess I could just put the 890 in rain mode until I get used to it but I feel like it's just more power than I need.
Excellent review your super knowledgeable and your diagnosis a spot on. I just bought the 790 and I'm loving it just changed the exhaust to Akrapovic and sounds much better will do the other mods as I grow with the bike. Tks again keep up the great reviews...
Amazing review 🤙 you nailed bike sound over your voice 🤘 wish every review around be like yours ✌️
Love the way you reviewed the bike mate! And thanks been considering this!
Nice video! There are so many good reviews on this bike and for the price the flaws are fixable! The motor sounds great can't wait to see how it works in the adv model!
yea i picked up a 2020 790 duke a month ago and love it. I traded in my 390 duke on it so its quite an upgrade. The 790 is a beast, but also a tame beast if you want it to be. It's awesome for just cruising around or nailing it I love it.
I bought one for my 8 year old and he loves it. Says it feels pretty stable around 130mph on the highways. He's never late to kindergarten
@@vaderwalks6790 8 year olds aren't in kindergarten.
@@ryzen397 he got left back a few times
Wanted to find out about this bike and it's an excellent vid for that, but I'm glad I wasn't out for a walk with my dog down any of those lanes.
Another great vid 👍 my bro has recently purchased one of these I'm really impressed with the quality of finish. I also agree about the rear end but he's just fitted an evotec tail tidy removed the rear pegs & grab rail & it looks spot on now. Jury still out in the tyres though
Since the day I got this machine, it always brought a smile on my face, too bad these days I can't get a proper ride on the streets, due to the lockdown of the virus😢hope everything comes back to normal.
Just put a deposit on a brand new 2020 790 Duke today... Get it next week... can't freaking wait..!!! Upgraded from the 390 which was also awesome! :)
Fantastic vid! Confirmed my thoughts, I need one!
Great video as always Mr Chops! that's a lot of bike and tech for the money compared to the 701 and 690!!
Nice video edit ... everything covered nicely!
Great review! My son will acquire one of these soon. Safe riding man!
I love my little 390 Duke commuter, seriously considering chopping in my weekend toy (XSR700) for one of these.
Looking forward to the R version of this bike. May have to pony up for one!
Great vid! Concur about the rear end look
Nice review, good ride footage - Nicely done!
Very honest review, love it! Also you getting any more key rings in at all?
Engine sound comes across really well. Nicely done!
Agree with you Chops on the exhaust / back of the bike.
Awesome review! and yes, THAT happened to me too! it shuts down(stalled) in the middle of my driving, I was like, wtf??? sent it to the dealer they checked all, pretty much nothing was bad with it. Although did a bit of research and the KTM´s have issues with the kickstand sensor. after taking it to the dealer, never did it again. greetings from Mexico.
I love the 790 really like the fact you have all the toys on it without having to faf around paying for it. Think your spot on about the mods required but yet to see how the suspension feels. Great vid as always mate 😎👍
Thanks matey!! :)
Well done.. The power commander is forbidden on street but with Coober we may have a solution especially for low rpm. The tires... yeah.. A road 5 or metzeler maybe better. The downnshift is cluncky as you mentioned. For the exhaust I don't like the sound at idle but sounds better at 6k (better than the akra).
My god parts of the UK are beautiful when it's not raining. May we continue to be allies forever(Merica). Great review! I said the same thing about my testicles recovering when I got off the one at the local shop. Compared to my Benelli Leonchino trail it has way more torque and energy.
I love your reviews. Real world stuff.
A lot of new bikes have cheap tires and suspension - it's where manufacturers save money - the BMW R9T comes with non adjustable suspension on most models. KTM have there own suspension outfit WP - all other reviews say it's well set up - i think you might be heavier than average :) - great review - it's a nice bike - i gotta try one.
Took my 1290 in today for a service and had a few hours on one of these. Felt a lot smaller than my SDR, and much lighter. I was impressed by the motor and electronics, it had the power parts catalogue thrown at it including the Akrapovic end can, the seat was like a plank of wood. Going up the gears you just opened it up and changed, going down it felt like you had to try and match the engine revs to the speed, too much speed and it wasn't happy. Nice little bike though.
Great, real world review thanks for being so thorough.
I test rode one of these again today and I'm pretty sure it will win out against the Street Triple R (my other choice) as the riding position and value proposition seem a little better for me (I'm 6'2"). I have read about issues with excessive heat from the left side of the engine (an issue as I live in sunny Sydney) and some gremlins in the box ie false neutrals etc. Did you experience any of these and how did you find it at highway speeds? Thanks
Wow, How are you recording the bike sounds without wind noise. I love mine, thanks for the review. I agree, they messed up the backend and not the most handsome of bikes but so much fun and confidence building a real bratt in traffic.
When it cut out at 15:20 that same thing happened to me. And just before it happend we did the same thing. A little throttle blip and engaged clutch. Strange.
What you said about disabling ABS and Traction Control on the MT09 in order to wheelie it is wrong. You just have to turn TC down 1 notch. ABS and TC still works fine.
Great vídeo, thank you! I just don't agree with you in how this KTM looks. For me, it looks superb! I did see the concept bike, looked awesome too, of course, but it was just a concept,... this version for the public nailed it, in my opinion.
Cheers, keep the good work!
Ahhh the sound !!! Great review btw !
After owning 2 Triumphs (Speed & Tiger) I am looking for another bike and brand. The KTM 790 seems to fit the bill. I'm so glad Choppsy got to review the 790. His weight and build is near identical to mine so ergonomics shouldn't be a problem if he's ok riding one. Just need some new rubber and rear suspension re-valving from the looks of it.
Great review. I was really impressed until you raised the issue of the suspension … which is why I love the Superduke GT. Yep, a shed load more money but the suspension is awesome, and that, for me, makes it worth it.
Awesome review man, Would you recommend this or a nuda 900 for city riding? The price difference would be phenomenal here in India but just wanted to know which one would be better suited for city traffic and occasional highway runs.
Will have to check out the cost for it down here in Australia. Would be a great commuter I have to say. Thanks Chops!
With the 890 announced you can pick these up silly cheap
Here's to hoping KTM put that 790 engine in a supermoto bike.... that would be a weapon
KTM haven't but someone made a 1290 offroad!
Excellent work Chopsy!!.....still prefer the 1290.... and trying to do deal on one. Keep up the front wheel👍👍😆
Great review Chopsy! How were the ergos? I’m looking for a bike I can fit on but I’m 6’6 280. Think I could fit, or would it be a bit too tight?
Cheers!
PS, I put a coober ECU & wings superflow on mine last year & super fit & sound👍🏼🏍
Beautiful bike lol i have seen a few popping up in my state in the US I'm aching to give one a go!
10/10 KTM for prototype and the hype, could have been a sensational bike
It is a sensation to ride
I’ve ridden both this and the superduke r 1290 I found this bike so much more fun!
I’m still very disappointed in the looks as you say the prototype had me sold but the road version not so much...
Agreed , I think this sized bike is more rewarding on the road as you can work the engine
This duke or the TUono 660? Great videos by the way. 💪🏼🔥🔥🔥
this bike remind me of Street Triple R . Please review the Triumph Street Triple R 2020 when lockdown eases 👍🏍️😄
Looks great but couldnt live with those rubber mirrors and the day/ night dash sensitivity. Thanks for a Great review though.
That rebound from the back shock isn’t something I would like, and I reckon I could fabricate up a custom exhaust for my self being a welder to really get some more pop from the Exhaust. These parallel twins are hard to get a big thump out off i here . Maybe that’s a challenge for me.
Great vid! How do you reckon it compares to the Ducati Hypermotard??
Borrowed one for a few days earlier this year. The engine sounds awesome and it looks amazing. But, I really didn't like the way it cooks your leg, the day night mode on the screen. That said, it's a good bike.
I absolutely LOVE this bike, I can't wait to get my Bike license and work my way up to it. Hope I am not too big for it, as I am 6ft 5
M WJ82 I’m 6ft 4 105kg with long legs and the can ride it fine. I used to own a speed triple 955 and the seat it a bit higher and the bars are closer. It feels great and i doubt it’ll be to small for you.
Is the R model definitely coming out and when?Had a test ride and loved it but the brakes did seem a bit below par, found the suspension fine but then I’m quite a skinny fella, felt pretty plush after my Monsters rock hard set up.Would be gutted if I went for it with the R being just around the corner.
Last summer I decided to change to a naked middleweight from my GSX-R750, over three days I tested the MT-09SP, KTM 790 and Street Triple R, the KTM blew me away with the fun I had on it (apart from the tyres) ,it was lighter than the other two and had far more power than any 800cc twin should have and its scalpel nickname is very appropriate but every time I got off it I just couldn't stand its looks, it is a very subjective thing but in my 40 years of biking there are only two bikes I let the looks stop me buying ,one was the Hayabusa and the second was the KTM 790.
The Hayabusa looks good, too.
@@user-sw2lv3zp6o Subjective, and i can understand where yonniboy is coming from, Hayabusa indeed looks ugly to me as well.
But with the 790 i am willing to ignore the looks those looks are manageable, get the bike custom wrapped or repainted or whatever makes it work for you, but that engine combined with the feature list and the wet weight makes is the most eligible bachelor of the middleweight naked category.
Can wait to get my hands on it once it debuts in India :D
Another great video loved it;) duke r version hmm
Would think it would be perfect for an aggressive pilot. Have a ball running to the market for cigs.
Very nice review! I would love to buy this bike! But they don't sell it in Vietnam, and import it is crazy expensive... Look a nice machine!
Nice one. I rode one of these the other day, absolutely loved it although next I did the 1290 straight after. I'm still wondering which one to buy haha.
Buy the bigger bike you will regret it if you dont
Your right- it sounds phenomenal!!!!!
There's lots of bikes out there, if you changed the suspension, exhaust and a remap they would instantly become great bikes.
I just watched you brilliant review (and filming) of the 2020 Street Tripple R. Which bike would your money be spent on out of the two. I am toying with either of them at the moment. I would very much value your view. Thanks, Lee
May I suggest the 890R sir? AKA The Super scalpel!
I feel the same about the rear end of the 790. Awesome bike though
most people don't have the money to do all those mods after paying for the bike - if it's not going to be reliable you can just get the Kawasaki twin or the new Suzuki SV or just a Yamaha MT07.
Different category. Nothing in the 650cc range offers anywhere near the amenities, controls, options. Also 800 has about 30 more horsepower, better bones (forks, brakes) for modding.
Nice gloves! Are those the dianese 4 stroke long? I just got a pair myself. What do you think of them?
Cheers for the smashin' review, LC. It certainly sounds like it ticks a lot of boxes when it comes to a do-it-all, fun, modern motorcycle. It looks like great value-for-money - until it comes to the upgrades that'll exploit the bike's full potential. Then again, we both know that very few standard machines will ever fully satisfy our personal requirements: so them upgrades catalogues will forever be our friends. All-in-all, I do quite fancy one meself. BOOOOOOOOM! 👍
"Great value for money" Dafuq? Might as well just get the new Street Triple R in that price range.
Yes its a really nice bike, Street Triple also fantastic though (well the RS was) its would be a close call between the two but RS is a lot more $$
It's just my opinion - based on grunty, supermoto-style motorcycles. The new Street Triple is a brilliant bike for the money (including the higher spec options) but I'd personally go for a used Speed Triple if I was in the market for a 3-cylinder naked. We pays our money, we takes our choice.
is the suspension great enough to handle for snowy mountain riding sometimes in Pennsylvania United States?
I had the display on dark mode on my 390 permanent because dark mode is just better on everything. :) But it was for sure too sensitive.
Is there any heating issue in the bike..or it’s cool for city riding and day to day commute..
great vid thanks bud test riding soon
Let me know what you think after the test ride mate.
nice review. Is it better than an MT09 SP?
I have watched every review on the KTM 790 Duke and this one was by far the best! Well done! I've been thinking about selling my 2013 Triumph Daytona 675R and buying a middle weight standard with some decent electronics, good looks, and a killer exhaust note. I was considering the Ducati Monster 821, Triumph Street Triple 765 R or RS, or the KTM 790 Duke.. Of the three bikes I mentioned which one would you choose?
Thanks Ryan, the 790 is great but out of those three the RS Street would be my choice. It's a fair bit more money of course but money no object 👍
US Warranty:
"This warranty covers only the engine, frame and swingarm. No other components of the motorcycle are covered by any warranty, expressed or implied and are sold “as is”"
Now that's confidence in a quality product.
That is a deal breaker for me.
Not true, my dealer covers it all
I don’t generally watch motovlogger reviews on bikes but that was pretty good
👍
Glad you enjoyed! 😁
Epic bike ..... KTM makes fun ready bikes
When I was thinking about changing my bike it was so close between duke 790 and mt09... I got mt09. The engine is still quite new and when I was riding it it had few false neurals?.. then I got better px at yamaha so went for it... but if I can have 2 bikes this will be next to my MT.... nice review.
I didnt find any false neutrals at all, the odd real neutral from 1st to 2nd using the QS though but thats quite normal for these bikes sometimes. MT09 is also great but this pips it for me, plus Im a KTM fan anyway haha
Definitely get one
Hey LCR, great review, I really like the look of this bike. Excuse my ignorance, could you elaborate on your comment 'suspension revalue' and what this means/ what you would gain from this? Cheers
Mark Cope it’s basically changing the way the suspension works by going inside and doing some modifications. Best left to a professional.
Super motard mode to lock the back wheel does require an extra dongle i think you will find.
i was thinking of going back to ktm after 2 690r and this 1 was 4 me until the dreaded cut out again 4 no reason had it to many times so not 4 me i will stick tracer mt09 tracer cheers great blog m8
James Perkins I had that issue on my brand new 390 Duke. Engine cut out mid corner on a roundabout, almost got squashed. It cut out at least once a day for about 2 months so I gave it back to KTM.
Nice one Chopster! Good to hear the negatives as well as the positives. This or the MT09-SP? Surely the suspenders on the SP MT would cinch it?
Yeah its tough, I think I would take this as suspension can be sorted, overall bike quality is better than the MT plus has all the toys standard. Its not a deal breaker the electronics but the ability to turn off traction and wheelie control is a must for me. The MT SP is also more expensive remember
The 1k pounds extra isn't worth it compared to the normal mt09 unless u really like that sp color!
With a revalve on ur standard mt09 ur as fine as the sp!
790 duke aka plum basher! 🤣🤣
another bril one Sir Chopsy
Thank you for the video. With which byke you had more fun and which one is more uncomfortable, 790 duke or 690 SMC R ?
None of those bikes are comfortable
I think it doesnt have all the bling with suspension and brakes yet, because KTM are maybe saving that for a potential 790 DUKE R, as they did with the 690 duke.
790 with the bits you mentioned or a street triple rs chops?
Good video I had a test ride to enjoyed the bike too but I don’t like the look of the rear like you mentioned and the swing arm 😬
I loved the Street RS when I tried it and that's a better bike than this but more $$, I would have to try the base Street to know which I haven't yet.
Quick shifters aren’t supposed to work well at low rpms. That’s kind of the point. The transmission needs to be loaded.
Makes perfect sense, you wouldn't expect an auto box on a car to shift great at low speeds...Would you?
For some reason they’ve taken away the duke/superduke orange frame that made this range stand out so much. Even the 390 still has it.
8.41 "yeeha".. 8.44 take that chopsy !! Haha .. i took one out today and agree with your views.
Great fun bike to ride
did you just ride out with forcefield pro shirt then a vest on top?
Chops you are making my life difficult. Just when I thought the Super Duke 1290 could be my next bike you tempt me with this creation. Looks like the Super Duke demo tomorrow might have to include the 790 as well!
Yes do it 😀😀
The 790 has all the power you can use on public roads and in my province falls into the same insurance class as my KLR 650. The Duke was a revelation compared to my KLR, which I was perfectly happy with before I bought the KTM. If the KTM is a scalpel then the KLR is a ladle. Still love the old beast, however; It's far happier in city traffic than the Duke and far more practical for touring.
What did you go for in the end?
The day/night mode on the screen should be user-switchable.
Great video & review LCR! Commuter and long weekender ride wise for the "working man", one bike, your thoughts? (Tires def changed) Cheers.
Would it be possible if you could modify one and see?
that exhaust.....standard? wow, I spose its the fact the microphone is well positioned....damn, it sounds great!
agree Peter, the sound is glorious!
Yo, the reason your Quickshifter is cluncky is most likely due to the parameters for the QS being wiped on the first service. I was experiencing the exact thing you mentioned about not being able to shift down. It's probably not auto blipping for you either if you listen carefully.
Apparently KTM never included a step to reload base paramters for the QS. As such the techs working on my bike didn't realise it was required, and I think I may be the only one in my area on a 790 Duke so they had no prior knowledge. Gave it back to them for 30min and it was fixed.
Your QS should be as smooth as using the clutch normally, just much faster. If it's not take it in for an inspection.
Also the point about tyres, I feel anyone who really cares about tyres already has a strong preference for what they like, and they're likely to swap to their preferred tyre no matter what came on the bike. IMO the Maxxis tyres are perfectly fine, no slip except under WOT, but I do live in Australia, so it's likely a lot easier to get heat into the tyres.
It’s already loud as hell , it sounds great 👍
I also roll in ktm 790 duke on my chain, I also install some parts
