      Did you had any major issues on the ktm after a while? Like electronic failures, leaks? I’m about to get one in 2 months brand new one. I’m only a little bit sceptical about reliability but thats not a deal breaker.

    The only thing I'll change on mine are the tyres. The standard ones are below par on track, but OK on the road. Suspension is fine for my 104kg. Quickshifter / auto-blipper is brilliant though it smoother to use the clutch at low speeds. Motor is a peach. This is in a different league to the MT-09 in terms of handling especially on track. You will never get a MT-09 to handle as well as this and I know cos I had one and tried all sorts of things. In the end I gave up and bought the KTM instead! Most fun bike I've ever had. Perfect blend of light weight and useable power. You really don't need 150bhp plus to have fun. Bonus for me is comfort. I'm 6' 3" and with the optional comfort seat it is all day comfortable. Bars are adjustable forwards / backwards so the ergonomics are bang on. The Street Triple 765 was on my shopping list too but for me it was a little too small. If I was a smaller rider it would be tight between the KTM and the Street Triple R. The MT-09 comes nowhere near. The only issue, as is often the case with KTMs is build quality / reliability. I've had a small oil leak from the output shaft fixed under warranty. Check the KTM forums - there are several others reporting this and other niggles. It was then fine for a few months but now it has come back, so I'm off back to the dealer again in a couple of weeks. It's not catastrophic but it is annoying. Jap bikes (or Triumphs for that matter) just don't do that. With any other bike I'd be thinking "do I get rid of it?", but this is so good I cannot think of another bike I'd rather have right now!

      I disagree about the quick shifter/ auto blipper. Compared it to my own down shifts and mine were smoother and better. Suspension is a bit firm but I wouldn't change it. The whole machine seems to have been optimized for my size and weight and my only complaint is how much trouble it's going to get me in if I approach its limits on the street.

    So glad they brought this bike back. I have a Duke 390 and I just got my full licence. I'll stick with the 390 for a while longer but at some point I'll upgrade and so far the 790 is on the top of my list. The 890 looks awesome too but might be a bit too much power going from the 390 and also a bit more expensive. Dunno, I guess I could just put the 890 in rain mode until I get used to it but I feel like it's just more power than I need.

    Last summer I decided to change to a naked middleweight from my GSX-R750, over three days I tested the MT-09SP, KTM 790 and Street Triple R, the KTM blew me away with the fun I had on it (apart from the tyres) ,it was lighter than the other two and had far more power than any 800cc twin should have and its scalpel nickname is very appropriate but every time I got off it I just couldn't stand its looks, it is a very subjective thing but in my 40 years of biking there are only two bikes I let the looks stop me buying ,one was the Hayabusa and the second was the KTM 790.

    Coming from a guy who has an MT-09, I'm actually extremely interested in the 790 Duke. I'm a lover of twins, especially the lumpy firing order twins. I know the 790 doesn't have the same horsepower as the MT, but it's not an extreme difference. I bet that 790 has a beefy midrange, maybe even more than the MT. What's your thoughts?
    That thing just sounds mean under throttle. Has a bit of a whirr too, like a gear set inside the engine.

    Took my 1290 in today for a service and had a few hours on one of these. Felt a lot smaller than my SDR, and much lighter. I was impressed by the motor and electronics, it had the power parts catalogue thrown at it including the Akrapovic end can, the seat was like a plank of wood. Going up the gears you just opened it up and changed, going down it felt like you had to try and match the engine revs to the speed, too much speed and it wasn't happy. Nice little bike though.

      My first KTM Duke 125 did the same and after one year and a half the engine died. Now I' ve given them a second opportunity and bought a Duke 790 the has a oil leak after 100 km...definitely I'm not going to buy a KTM anymore (or at least in the next 20 years).

    • @soulrebelno1
      @soulrebelno1 4 роки тому

      @@carlosgomismartin9337 I bought a Honda CB125R, and it's been faultless. I've been training with the Honda RIDE Academy in Chester, mainly because they use brand new CB650Rs, and the people who run it are the best in the business, and are hand-picked. When I complete the Honda course, I've got my MOD2 on Monday, they give you £500 off a new bike. For my next bike I was looking at a Triumph Trident 660, an Aprilia Tuono 660, or my favourite the Honda CB650R. They've just got some 2021 CB650Rs in Smiths Chester, and I've been having a good look at them, they're very nice. I've considered other bikes like the KTM 790, or a Yamaha MT-07, but, they all have their faults. The Trident 660 is a bit small for me, and the Aprilia Tuono is too expensive, there are reliability problems, and a long wait for any parts if you need them. Also, the KTM and Aprilia dealers are thin on the ground, and miles away from me. Thanks for the info on the problems you've had. I'll think I'll definitely go for a new 2021 Honda CB650R; I love the bike, the insurance is not too bad, it's cheaper than an MT-07, or a Tuono, but best of all - I know it will start in the morning!

      @@soulrebelno1 My brother has the CB650R, bought in April 2019, with 15K Km and stil is going like the first day, zero problems. Honda is always a trusty option. I've talked with so many people that bought the KTM Duke 790 and practically everyone got a problem in his first 15K km (engine stops, oil leaks, lights...). And is very sad because I wanted that my next bike was the superduke 1290, but with these experiences I've totally changed my mind.

    • @soulrebelno1
      @soulrebelno1 4 роки тому

      @@carlosgomismartin9337 Same here, I keep hearing about the reliability problems, so wouldn't buy a KTM. Saying that, I would love a new KTM 1290 Super Duke, but only if I could afford it, and I had more than one bike! But, it's totally unsuitable for my needs, and I would never use its full potential. Lamb Chop Rides got rid of his 2014 KTM 1290 Super Duke One for similar reasons (ua-cam.com/video/QTAlUcjJwMs/v-deo.html).
      I don't think you can go far wrong with a bike from one of the big four Japanese manufacturers: Yamaha, Honda, Suzuki and Kawasaki. Surprisingly, 40% of BMWs will require a repair within the first four years of ownership, which I found a bit shocking.
      After riding around on a few different 2020 CB650s for a while during my Honda training, I'll probably be going for a brand new 2021 Honda CB650R, it's a better bike compared to say a Yamaha MT-07 or a Suzuki SV650. The CB650R now comes fitted with a Showa Separate Function Big Piston (SFF-BP) 41mm USD forks up front, so the handling will be even better. Would've liked a nice TFT, but at least they've tweaked the LCD dashboard. The engine is now EURO5 compliant with no loss of top end power. Plus, it's received a few other tweaks, like internal water channelling from cylinder head to cylinders, which does away with most of the exterior hoses. It's a well proven in-line four, which is refined and reliable, and very smooth around town. But, open it up, and it will howl and scream, and almost snap your head off, as I found out - it's great on a motorway!

  • @beetleything1864

    A lot of new bikes have cheap tires and suspension - it's where manufacturers save money - the BMW R9T comes with non adjustable suspension on most models. KTM have there own suspension outfit WP - all other reviews say it's well set up - i think you might be heavier than average :) - great review - it's a nice bike - i gotta try one.

  • @arbeemtb6648
    @arbeemtb6648 5 років тому +4

    Yo, the reason your Quickshifter is cluncky is most likely due to the parameters for the QS being wiped on the first service. I was experiencing the exact thing you mentioned about not being able to shift down. It's probably not auto blipping for you either if you listen carefully.
    Apparently KTM never included a step to reload base paramters for the QS. As such the techs working on my bike didn't realise it was required, and I think I may be the only one in my area on a 790 Duke so they had no prior knowledge. Gave it back to them for 30min and it was fixed.
    Your QS should be as smooth as using the clutch normally, just much faster. If it's not take it in for an inspection.
    Also the point about tyres, I feel anyone who really cares about tyres already has a strong preference for what they like, and they're likely to swap to their preferred tyre no matter what came on the bike. IMO the Maxxis tyres are perfectly fine, no slip except under WOT, but I do live in Australia, so it's likely a lot easier to get heat into the tyres.

    Was this 2018 or 2019? Also, does anyone know if the 790 engine was made by CFMoto or KTM's Austria plant? I know the 2023 is strictly made in China now for the re-intro of the bike. WP Suspension maker is wholly owned by KTM. You really can' get any good info off their webiste. They do have fork cartrides for the 790 but no idea what's involved specs wise or price wise they also have 2 upgrade rear shocks but again no specs or prices. But it's a ktm, so make sure you buy one new enough to have warranty....or buy a Yamaha MT09 that won't break.
    My 2018 Duke has required a full engine rebuild at 1850miles.
    Took my dealer three months to complete the work and they returned it with a coolant leak....it's currently back at the dealership.

      @Gautam454 6 років тому

      What kind of riding do you do? The Pirelli Diablo Rosso Corsas are an amazing tire for street/track. It's a dual compound so it's harder in the middle for longevity and softer on the sides for grip. I run at the top of intermediate group and still find the tires work wonderful. And it's great on the street with decent mileage.
      If you'll do 0 trackdays, you can go with a slightly more street/sport tire like the Pirelli Rosso (non corsas).
