Great video. Having owned a KTM890R Duke from new and recently sold it, the day after which the valve cover gasket failed on the new owner(out of warranty but to be fair my KTM dealer replaced/ repaired FOC asa goodwill gesture)the only thing that I would be weary of would be reliability.I wanted to get a 3rd year warranty but Ktm don't do them but is standard on the Suzuki, one of the reasons I sold it.Although an all new bike and having test ridden the Suzuki for a WHOLE day, there is no doubt in my mind I would go for the Suzuki, better riding position, better dash and I really liked the delivery of the power from the GSX-8S(crap name)'s engine. Would very much like to see a video done of a "day in the life of lamb chops"video as a UA-camr etc and what it entails.....🤪
Who cares if it’s manufactured in china? It would be a difference argument if the bikes were designed and manufactured in china. Surely it’s just a case of the Chinese workers at the KTM factory building the bikes to the exact spec and blueprints provided by KTM HQ.
Sunday morning viewing sorted again Chops 😊👍 Love these comparisons that Greg and yourself do......and your thoughts on the machines echo my sentiments exactly.......if I was putting my own money down then it would be on that GSXS8.
Great fun review as always, thanks. The 790 is not available where I love and I bought the Suzuki over the base model KTM 890. I like the relaxed position and nature as I mostly ride around the city and there is still plenty of excitement for the odd weekend ride.
Really enjoyed this comparison. Bought the 8S last week and its been so impressive! Its exactly as sporty as i want it to be in the twists and curves, the torque just lets you destroy long lines of cars on quiet roads with how quickly it can pick up, super responsive, amazing brakes, i really dont care if it cant do 160mph
I own the grey 790 duke and it's an amazing machine. My only complaint would be the tyres which were shot after 2000 miles. Michelin Road 6 fitted now and they take the bike to another level.
Another great & entertaining comparison. I really like the GSX8S so I'm biased tbh but I would chose it over the KTM simply because I know it would be more reliable over the 3 or 4 years I had it on finance. However the KTM is definitely a better bike in pretty much ever area seemingly.
The suzuki does look a good bike, i have the ktm and love that too, its a bit unfair how people call ktms unreliable for no reason other than rumours though.
@@LeeB132 lol sweetheart it's not a rumor. KTM doesn't warranty their R models past ONE year. Even they know they're unreliable. Your valve cover gasket will start leaking.
@@LeeB132 Well you can only say as you find & if yours has been reliable then good & I hope it stays that way. However, I've seen & heard about a lot of KTM's with issues regarding finish & leaks etc. Suzuki also has a 7 year / 70,000 mile warranty if you get it serviced by an official Suzuki dealer annually. I think KTM only offer a year which isn't reassuring or good enough imo. Austrian built KTM's have their issues & I have my doubts that a Chinese built one will be any better. Time will tell I guess.

I own a KTM 1290 SDR Evo and got the four year warranty but I have to say, despite owning it and loving it in this test I’d go with the Suzuki. The Japanese bikes might be a bit unimaginative at times but they’re bullet proof and that’s a massive plus point I think.
We had a 2014 and 2015 sdr, traded them in 2021 to 2 new SDR1290s... Did almost all the service and maintenance work on the older ones. Basically they still are easy do-it-yourself bikes but got lazy with the new ones and have let the dealer do the servicing. No big issues up until now yet (exept the 2014 had the rear axle replaced as warranty item - there was a small play that I didn't notice but it was done anyhow by the dealer). Oh, there was: Indicator switches were replaced (they were trash from new) and one recall (for 3 electric wires) was done.
@iivaridark6850 yeah my 2023 sdr evo no issues whatsoever. I let it sit in garage for 3 months no leaks started right away. Everything is perfect on it except monthly payments hahahah
If I wanted a weekend plaything I’d buy the ktm, but for commuting as well, there’s only one bike I’d buy. Ktm need to up their reputation for reliability and service.
Be interesting to compare it to the 800 CF Moto roadster as they are made in the same factory, it’s cheaper than the KTM, but same engine and frame. That would be good to see how they compare.
Sad the Hornet isn't in this test as I bought one and love it but thinking about it these are £8000 bikes the Hornet is a £7000 bike so what about a test with the CFMoto 800Nk vs the Hornet as both are 7 grand. Btw before the Hornet I had a 390duke for 6years and never really had an issue with it.
I test rode the Gsx 8s 750 hornet And the 790 duke recently The quickshifter didnt work propertly on the ktm demo bike and i found the throttle more jerky than the susuki. The s8 just feels more relaxed and smoother throttle and less aggressive overall. looks better too imo and more reliable the dash is also better. Yet to test out the aprilia 660 so that will be the next one Id rate them 1st suzuki 2nd 790 duke 3rd honda hornet But all still good bikes cant go wrong with any of um.
Great review as ever, thanks for posting. First up, noticed you’ve changed your intro’ which is no bad thing. You’ve lost the scene with you head butting the rock when on the off road bike; liked that! With regard to the review, couldn’t agree more. The KTM may have performance edge but it’s marginal and depends on riding styles & priorities. I’d buy the Suzuki for looks, fit & finish, brakes and suspension. And….it’s made in Japan (I believe). As an aside, what brand of bike gloves is Greg wearing…..or are they flash Aldi ski gloves?
Brilliant review Chopsy. Both great bikes but probably comes down to a personal choice. I test rode a 790 recently and must say was blown away. Handling and engine was superb and build quality up there with other manufacturers. I expect if you look on any bike forum you’ll see reliability issues with all makes, not just KTM Keep them coming mate 👍👍👍

I'd love a KTM, but every time I go to a bike meet, I make a point of asking KTM 890 Duke owners about reliability. I've heard of cracked dashes and water leaks. When have you heard of that on Suzuki?
I bought the 8S as my commute bike to get into London, its spot on for that. Best thing is I am saving £6.3K a year on my train season ticket, so can justify a second bike for the weekend ride.
How about a CFMoto 800NK? It looks a lot better than the KTM and it's only 6999 GBP in Britain. Built in China isn't a problem. They make good engines. CFMoto give you a four-year warranty. Great video, lads. Nick J
Good review. Ridden both & both impressive. Ktm for me. An important fact was missed. Yes the Ktm is made in China by CF Moto , which as you highlighted may put potential purchasers off, , but CF Moto have the confidence to offer a 4 year warranty on their own models ( Ktm is 2 yrs ). That says everything to me & I would not hesitate to buy the Ktm 790.
Good job, what a bike! About Suzuki gsx 8s, Could you tell me how to reset (bring back to zero) information of the trip1 or 2 ? What button and how used it
A lot of bikes have been assembled in China, including some Suzuki's, and a lot of parts have been, and are made in China. Just because of that, it doesn't mean they are made to a lower standard, even Chinese owned bikes (or at least some), are very well made, Keeway/Binelli for instance (owned by the same group). China can make them cheaper in part due to almost city sized manufacturing plants.
I own a 4 month old 2023 790 (in the far nicer orange colour) and so far it’s not broken. I hope it doesn’t because it’s great to ride. My indicator switch housing had a screw only half done up but other than that it seems ok so far. That was the only thing I could find so far that wasn’t assembled right.
I have to say, no more new ktm for me! Had the first 790 Duke for 3 years and selled it due to the high amount of engine failures! Also had the problems like pulsing brakes and oil + cooling leak. The 8s isn't the prettiest bike but I will give it a try the next days.
Either one of those would be fun, i'd probably take the Suzuki if it's more comfy because i'm of a certain age now and that matters. Fun all the way for not too much money
This video established that a heavyweight rider on a slightly faster bike will be about as quick as a lightweight rider on a slightly slower bike. Humour aside, the conclusion was well-stated. Bike reviewers may love to rave about KTMs but when having to actually spend their own money on a bike they'd sensibly opt for another brand instead.
Always been a fan of suzuki motorcycles owned 8 over the years, But looking at it alongside the KTM that's got my vote, I'm not saying I'd buy one. I'm very sceptical about KTMs reliability , knowing my luck if I bought any KTM, I'd have the Built on a Friday afternoon the one last of the assembly line ,you know the one / problematic one, Great video, still enjoying the jokes 😊
I haven't ridden either but the GSX8S would be my choice. The elephant in the room isn't necessarily the fact that it's built in China, it's the fact that too many report issues with KTMs anyway. That alone would put me off buying one.
Tip, suzuki weight is with all fluids and ready to go for 202kgs. That why it isn't as heavy as people tought. And checking ktm too. :) I wish we had a monster poped in, as it was my comparision, with Tuono 660 that was kind of on another league. Nice video tho. Loved torque oriented GS8S, but still went with higher reving monster (937) for same price. But 8S is really torquy without beeing janky and its cool.
Another great comparison form you and Greg, I had assumed your appreciation of Suzuki’s mech build quality would always swing your vote Chops. I see someone commented on the 8S QS is standard which would be the final nail in the KTM for me. On a side note Could I request an updated “living with the GSXR “ vid from Greg as keen to see if still loving it and if had any issues ?
All the negative reliability comments about KTM. A load of BS from mostly non KTM riders. If any other brand breaks down its no problem because the dealer will fix it, but if it's a KTM...oh boy do we need to be whining about that... but oh boy what fun machines do they produce there at KTM👍
As always great vid👍 my question though is if that's your budget £7999 and that was it 1 bike to do everything would you buy one of those or would you look at a second hand bigger/better spec bike? Might make an interesting vid for us poor folk!
The 390ies are made in India. So many companies do this. Factories in China, India, Thailand etc. And the components used, such as brakes, ABS, injection and other bits and pieces are made in these countries aswell. Thank you for a well made film. (I'm a happy 790 Duke owner)
Nice review, enjoyed the ride with you two and it helped me make my choice. When it's your money that you're going to invest, it is kind of a deal breaker to go for something that has been outsourced in China for a cheaper price. I may be wrong but I always get the assumption that it is to skim on something either buildy quality, parts or something. Also keep in mind that you need to pay extra to get all the options that come stock on the 8S
Great review Chopsy ,good to see you and Greg having great fun on those two bikes .I think the long run will make folks minds up regards the Chinese involvement , but a load of bikes are made all over the planet now probably to avoid the VAT man .😁😁 two decent real world fun bikes .👍
Always love these comparisons, your best content imo, how do you think the tuono 660 compares? I kind of see it in a group of its own between these and the mt07 etc (which I have) and the 765s, mt09, 890s
I have owned two KTMs and both were reliable, however they are higher maintenance than Japanese bikes. The worst two new bikes I have ever owned were Japanese, one a Kawasaki and the the other a Yamaha. My point is any of the manufacturers can build reliable and unreliable bikes. Not in the market at the moment but when the time comes I would certainly consider another KTM.
Really like your reviews and totally agree that as a buyer. I definitely wouldn’t buy the ktm as it’s built in china. Japanese all the way. Had ktm’s in the past and even when they weren’t built in china I had reliability issues. All my Japanese bikes ran fine..
No risk with CFmoto. They produce more motorcycles than the rest of the manufacturers could ever dream of. I have a cfmoto. The quality in its build and ride is as good as any other brand. If the quality is good, who cares where it is made. If you choose the KTM in this review, then it proves that the country in which it is assembled is irrelevant. Great video.
After owning around 40 bikes the KTM 790 was my least favourite. Bought with 500 miles on the clock should have told me something, on the first service at KTM dealers they couldn't reset the clocks, new clocks under warranty. The suspension was poor and on anything other than super smooth road it would run wide. The engine in any town work was very stuttery on no load throttle. The seat was rock hard. I spent money on engine add-ons. it didn't fix it. I sold it at a big loss. I have a Suzuki gsxr 600 2011 L1 fantastic on the road and track days also a Ducati Monster 1100 EVO save yourself some money lots of great second hand bikes out there.
if the quality is still good, and as far as i know the 790 is still an excellent bike, i don't see the issue with it being manufactured in China. it's also manufactured by Cfmoto, which builds their own quality bikes.
Of course, every KTM doesn't have water leaks and oil leaks, but why do some of them have these issues? When did you hear of a Japanese bike with an oil leak or water leak? KTM would be my dream bike, but I'm scared.
@@anthonytownsend4900 bro open your mind a little. Japanese bikes aren't free of flaws. @JinKazama92 Maybe I'm biased because I haven't had a new Jap bike for years. I'm basing my outdated opinion on how reliable they USED to be. Sorry bro.
The low/mid torque of the Suzuki is the biggest selling point for me. Suzuki tends to focus on the low and mids a lot and even for advanced street riders, (whatever that means), maybe with the addition of a couple extra teeth on the rear sprocket, that could be a lot of fun, especially on the 8R. Plus Made in Japan, you can’t beat that, IMO.
so what is the Final Price of the KTM? If its all in for 8K then fine but with possibly 2k of Electronic Extras forget it (definitely worth doing though)

Says a lot about KTM in terms of reliability that it's so bad now they are prepared to start building them in China in the hope there is an improvement.
I own the China 790. Perfect quality. Absolutely worth the money. Actually the fact that it's made in China now was the last bit for me to tend from hesitation towards buying one.
I’ve been loving my 2023 Duke 790 for about 2000 miles so far. Still early to tell with my bike specifically, but from what I’ve seen online, the Chinese built 790’s so far have been much more reliable than the Austrian built 890’s
Personally, I would be put off by the Chinese built KTM. Other than that I would have one in a heart beat. I guess a long term use review, with a 10,000 miles+ bike, in the harsh Winter, would tell us more. I think I am not alone in this thought and KTM will lose bike sales. Not to keen on the Suzuki looks but that's subjective. Great review as usual.
I Think if making a comparison between an Austrian and a Chinese assembly line worker, I would not be so sure about the Austrian making less mistakes...
Another good review Chops, "real world" comparison as not all of us can afford a V4s Ducati or 1250 BMW. Having said that, I'm contemplating a 2012 KTM 990 SM-R and if anyone can shed some light on reliability issues, it would be very appreciated.
I would go for the Suzuki myself... i think the ktm is slightly better looking but the Chinese made thing would push me to the Suzuki. iv heard they are going to be making a 8R !
I watched a video on youtube about all of the times that Suzuki has cut corners and made motorcycles that were death traps. It has put me off Suzuki a bit because who knowns if they have cut corners on the 8S and years down the line, people will be making videos about how dangerous it was?

I bought the Hornet in March and absolutely love it.
Really wish they’d bring this to the states
Who cares if it’s manufactured in china? It would be a difference argument if the bikes were designed and manufactured in china. Surely it’s just a case of the Chinese workers at the KTM factory building the bikes to the exact spec and blueprints provided by KTM HQ.
Many people care, myself included, much rather have a jap built bike.
Sunday morning viewing sorted again Chops 😊👍
Love these comparisons that Greg and yourself do......and your thoughts on the machines echo my sentiments exactly.......if I was putting my own money down then it would be on that GSXS8.
for my style of riding I’d probably get the ktm, but I really like how to gsx looks. Less like a toy, more like a grown up tool.
Nice video chaps!❤
Hi, do you had any issues with that in all the whole year?
@@manurodrigo9646 no, all good
Another great & entertaining comparison.
@@subzero-ku2wx bla bla bla bla bla
@@LeeB132 lol 10k miles on my 890 R and the cams are eating themselves. That's the story for many of us. It'd be the PERFECT bike if it wasn't eating itself to death. 🔜🏍️💩💨
Went with the 790 since KTM were offering £1k off and free QS so no brainer for me.
I own a KTM 1290 SDR Evo and got the four year warranty but I have to say, despite owning it and loving it in this test I’d go with the Suzuki. The Japanese bikes might be a bit unimaginative at times but they’re bullet proof and that’s a massive plus point I think.
Traitor 😂
Love these comparison tests, although in my opinion would spend the £7999 on a 2 year old Street triple 765rs. Cheers Choppsy and Gregorio
When you throw used bikes into the mix any bike is possible though. Even a 1290 duke
Love this comparo format !
I guess playing Top Trumps helps pass the time for KTM owners while their bike is back at the dealer awaiting its latest repair!
Be interesting to compare it to the 800 CF Moto roadster as they are made in the same factory, it’s cheaper than the KTM, but same engine and frame. That would be good to see how they compare.
The 8S is just always a little bit better in every comparison… I know… because I’ve got one & its fantastic 👌
390 DUKE & ADV is made in india, i had the ADV. Other than poor quality fixings it was a cracking bike..
Loved this video boys..
The bloke at the railway crossing, must of thought you was talking to yourself! Great vid chops.
Sad the Hornet isn't in this test as I bought one and love it but thinking about it these are £8000 bikes the Hornet is a £7000 bike so what about a test with the CFMoto 800Nk vs the Hornet as both are 7 grand. Btw before the Hornet I had a 390duke for 6years and never really had an issue with it.
the 790 is currently £6999 including quick shifter/ blipper
I test rode the Gsx 8s 750 hornet And the 790 duke recently
The quickshifter didnt work propertly on the ktm demo bike and i found the throttle more jerky than the susuki. The s8 just feels more relaxed and smoother throttle and less aggressive overall. looks better too imo and more reliable the dash is also better. Yet to test out the aprilia 660 so that will be the next one
Id rate them 1st suzuki
2nd 790 duke
3rd honda hornet
But all still good bikes cant go wrong with any of um.
Did you have a go on the aprilia?
@@_Makanko_ sorry late reply no i didn't head some bad reviews on reliability so bought the gsx 8s
@@davewestsk8 Nice, enjoy it!
Great job as usual guys , giving me Waldorf & statler vibes 👍👍
Thank you, I think hehe 👍
I expect if you look on any bike forum you’ll see reliability issues with all makes, not just KTM
Keep them coming mate
👍👍👍
well said im fed up with ktm getting a bad rep for no reason, i have the new ktm duke and its been faultless.
Perceived build-quality is different than actual reliability.
@@subzero-ku2wx that’s true, I’m just going on experience having owned 2 KTMs and have had no major problem with either, just usual wear and tear and also realising that all manufacturers seem to have niggles with most models
@@bencatt6246 As a brand KTM seems to do a lot of things right, and makes a bike viscerally engaging like no other. But the 790/890 platform just eats itself alive.
@@subzero-ku2wx hahaha yep. Good point😂
Brilliant bike test guys and like you guys the KTM is a bloody great bike. And to be honest it fits my 6’00” 20 body fairly well too. I’ve not tried the Suzuki but if it fits me I’d prefer to buy the Suzuki for myself. Might be it’s because I already own 2 Suzuki’s (and 2 Hondas) and I do love the reliability of my Suzuki’s too. That made in China thing I’m sure would not go away for me.
Great job guys thanks👍
Thanks for your brilliant content Chopsy.
Glad you enjoy it buddy 😁👍
Loving the comparison videos with Greg. Can we have more please? 🙏
we need a greg vs chops comparison :)
Unexpected cameo by the car guy at the train crossing 16:40 - should've asked him which one looked better to him.
Haha I should! 😄👍
Nick J
+10 hp, -10kg, more advanced electronics.... what else??? ❤
The electronics not being guaranteed on KTMs?
Good review.
Ridden both
& both impressive.
Suzuki does six years on the brand new models though... might as well pick suzuki then?
Let's not forget BMW manufacture in certain things in China, like the 900cc parallel twin.
Great mixing your video with the adverts good job,
Good job, what a bike!
About Suzuki gsx 8s,
Could you tell me how to reset (bring back to zero) information of the trip1 or 2 ?
Hi, still had no problems on that bike?
Best moto vlogger duo
Got my 8S last week and I love it so far
Expect the fact the speedometer is off , what a miss by Suzuki
@@SWTVENOM yeah every other bike has a precisely accurate speedo
Another great vid furk##g fantastic looking forward to the sustan pass cause it was shut when we tried it avalanche 👍👍
Always been a fan of suzuki motorcycles owned 8 over the years,
But looking at it alongside the KTM that's got my vote,
I'm not saying I'd buy one. I'm very sceptical about KTMs reliability , knowing my luck if I bought any KTM, I'd have the Built on a Friday afternoon the one last of the assembly line ,you know the one / problematic one,
Great video, still enjoying the jokes 😊
17mins in. Would love if that guy said " do you know who I am, I am ronny pickering "..😂
Great job both of you. :)
I haven't ridden either but the GSX8S would be my choice. The elephant in the room isn't necessarily the fact that it's built in China, it's the fact that too many report issues with KTMs anyway. That alone would put me off buying one.
Came here dead set on a 790 Duke, but leaving here looking for a deal on an 8S......
I`ll take japanese built bikes over chinese ones any day of the week.
Cool video, thanks ! I really enjoy your content mister :)
Tip, suzuki weight is with all fluids and ready to go for 202kgs. That why it isn't as heavy as people tought. And checking ktm too. :)
I wish we had a monster poped in, as it was my comparision, with Tuono 660 that was kind of on another league.
Yeah good idea mate 👍
Always look forwards to a bit of Chopsy on a Sunday morning.
All the negative reliability comments about KTM. A load of BS from mostly non KTM riders. If any other brand breaks down its no problem because the dealer will fix it, but if it's a KTM...oh boy do we need to be whining about that... but oh boy what fun machines do they produce there at KTM👍
Trash China junk could never be as durable as any of the Japanese big fours!
What's up with the LCR loco flash in the middle of the video? We know the channel we watching!
As always great vid👍 my question though is if that's your budget £7999 and that was it 1 bike to do everything would you buy one of those or would you look at a second hand bigger/better spec bike? Might make an interesting vid for us poor folk!
Another top class comparitive review. Thanks a mill.
I have a 2023 790 Duke. This Maschine is insane. Would never trade it. Style, sound, driving. for me perfection
Great review Chopsy ,good to see you and Greg having great fun on those two bikes .I think the long run will make folks minds up regards the Chinese involvement , but a load of bikes are made all over the planet now probably to avoid the VAT man .😁😁 two decent real world fun bikes .👍
I really like the 8S, would love to own the blue version.
Didn't know the GSX8S was a V4 🤔 😂 (1min 43s in).
Be great if it was. Great video as always Chops. 👍
Good point 👍
I watched a video about Honda 750 and Suzuki GSX-8s and at least on Honda front wheel, it read "made in China"... 😁
Great review guys!
if the quality is still good, and as far as i know the 790 is still an excellent bike, i don't see the issue with it being manufactured in China.
it's also manufactured by Cfmoto, which builds their own quality bikes.
Iv got the 790 Duke absolutely perfect ❤ truly amazing bike all round the only thing I'd change it for is a 890r...
I almost crashed due to my steering head bearings failing at such a low mileage on my honda.
water leak on your 790? tighten those coolant hoses. oil leak? tighten those bolts. known issue and the solutions easy as hell a 10 year old can do them.
@JinKazama92 Maybe I'm biased because I haven't had a new Jap bike for years. I'm basing my outdated opinion on how reliable they USED to be. Sorry bro.
have a read on the honda africa twin 1100 pages about the quality of the finish and paint etc

Hey Chop's great review again maybe you could try and get a ride and a review of the new

Yeah, every other person has their phone made in China... And what about their computers!
I’ve been loving my 2023 Duke 790 for about 2000 miles so far. Still early to tell with my bike specifically, but from what I’ve seen online, the Chinese built 790’s so far have been much more reliable than the Austrian built 890’s
How is it after all this time?
Great video chops, for reasons unknown my previous comments have been removed?
Personally, I would be put off by the Chinese built KTM. Other than that I would have one in a heart beat. I guess a long term use review, with a 10,000 miles+ bike, in the harsh Winter, would tell us more. I think I am not alone in this thought and KTM will lose bike sales. Not to keen on the Suzuki looks but that's subjective. Great review as usual.
KTMs are well known for their horrible reliability, so being made in China might be an improvement actually 😂
@@KapitanPisoar1 🤣🤣🤣

I watched a video on youtube about all of the times that Suzuki has cut corners and made motorcycles that were death traps. It has put me off Suzuki a bit because who knowns if they have cut corners on the 8S and years down the line, people will be making videos about how dangerous it was?
