You are kidding me right? The KTM is miles better than the Yamaha MT09. I've owned both - paid for with my own hard earned cash - and having had the MT09 for 12 months I part ex'd it for the KTM in July this year. MT09 is a fab motor ruined by a very average chassis with terrible suspension and no front end feel whatsoever. The worst bike I've ever taken on track. Frankly scary. The KTM is perfectly balanced, has loads of front end feel and is miles better on track. On the road the whole KTM package feels perfectly balanced. Great engine, just the fright amount of power, fantastic handling and amazing electronics. The up / down quick shifter is outstanding. One thing you did miss from the review is that the chain is a pain to adjust on the KTM as it is VERY sensitive to chain tension and even dealers tend to set them too tight which can damage the output shaft seal. I've had mine replaced already and it still weeps. You have to run the chain quite slack. Despite this niggle it's the best bike I've owned for a long time and THE perfect road tool.
@@mikewoodward3671 I was really considering the MT-09 since I had the FZ-07 (USA) which got totalled earlier this year. I've been thinking on buying either a used Ducati Streetfighter, a Z1000sx, a Ducati Monster 1200, a BMW S1000r, or a Kawasaki 2014 Z1000...but this one beats them all! (For me...) Thanks again for enlighten me :). The looks of this KTM are great, too.
As usual, another great long term review from TMF - it's why I subscribe to the channel. I already have a 2009 Street Triple R, so I wouldn't buy the Duke 790 as they're too similar. However, I do have a 390 Duke, and that bike has the same snatchiness at small throttle openings. It is easily cured with a piggy-back ECU, and I installed a Coober item - this has cured the snatchy throttle. It seems that to conform to Euro 4, KTM has made the air/fuel ratio too lean, thereby causing the snatchy throttle.
These videos really epitomize how a motorcycle review should be done, I really can't think of anything to ask that you did not cover, nice job. Gotta say that insurance seems reasonable in the UK. I'm paying almost 1000$ per year for a 2017 F6B. I've been riding bikes for 40 years, and if anyone knows Ottawa then that year is basically 7 months of riding, if you're lucky. Although I did see a guy riding a Ural with the sidecar set up last winter (December) in -20C weather and it was snowing, brave man!
Great comprehensive review! I'm really looking forward to trying it on for size! Been riding my LC8 adv for the last 10 years, it seems about time to upgrade and downsize!
24 minutes well spent. Thanks for another comprehensive review TMF! This bike is my top 3 to replace my Wee-Strom. Going to have to check out how bad the snatchy throttle response at low constant speeds is. (RJ reported the same problem.)
Went out for a testride on one of these today and I must say, it's one of the best bikes ever! Great power, handling, brakes, modes etc etc. Yep, it might push my BMW out of my garage...hmm...
Well, I'm here again! And yes, the BMW went...but for a Honda CB650R! Which went after testing the 690 Duke! I love it! ...but must admit, the 790/890 lurching in the shadows. But are they better enough to justify the price? And now there's a new 790 coming in!
Fantastic review, I’m slowly leaning towards the duke rather than the mt07 , I’m coming from a adv350 , you answered all the questions I wanted answering thank you 👍
A great review. This was my first visit on ur CHANNEL N ur presentation n coverage of all imp details made me subscribe ur channel. Keep uploading the videos in same manner
I was test-riding it too at the weekend. The quick shifter is incredible smooth, the bike remains absolutely stable even when shifting up/down in a corner with a good lean angle. Breaking into a corner is easy too, requiring only minimal additional effort. I also tested breaking when leaning in a turn already (yep, guilty of that...), and the bike remained quite stable - only a bit of straightening, rather easy to control. Very tempted to trade-in one of my bikes for this little gem. Anyway, thank you for the review, sir. Well done ;-)
You mentioned maintenance but without touching on at least the ease of checking oil and some other fluid levels. Even if you get a garage to do something about an observed problem, it's still important to comment on these routine aspects I feel.
Hello and thanks for the comprehensive video and explanation. I am a new rider in my early 60s. I am about to buy my 1st bike in the next month and I have been aiming for the Yamaha MT-09 (yes I know that it has a very aggressive torque but it also has the modes A-STANDARD-B + the traction control + the ABS so I consider that I will be able to grow into the bike even as a beginner). Also I am no longer 20, so going out to impress anyone or do wheelies. I want to more tame the beast. But now to throw a spanner into the works, over the last two days I have been looking at a lot of videos of the KTM Duke 790. My brother-in-law who has been riding all of his adult life sides more on the MT-09 for the reliability of the Japanese build and the question of looks is a matter of personal taste. I like the KTM for the dirt bike heritage in the look of the thing. In your humble opinion is there anything that you think I should consider that contrasts between these two bikes before taking the plungeÉ
Had my 790 for a little over 2 months now and agree almost entirely with your review. I find I get just 120 mls from a full tank to low fuel warning and get a further 30 mls until range reads zero and I'm panicking - so 150 mls range. Estimated range is always optimistic. Comfort is fine - 8 saddle hours around twisty Welsh roads last month was more-or-less OK (and a whole lot better than my last MV). I don't like the downshifter - only seems to play nice on a completely closed throttle. Bike is fine for short-arses (if confident) - 28" inside leg here so extreme tip-toes/one-sided ball of foot. Low seating is an (expensive) option but don't feel that £132 for 20mm extra is worth it! Also - just discovered that the 790 will take a 390 tank ring (SW-Motech/Givi) using longer bolts. Ride safe....
@8:20 It's quite often Friday around where I live too. We seem to get at least one a week lately and, if anything, i'd say they're becoming more common...
Great video. I currently own a 2012 KTM 350excf and want to retire from trail riding and see more of Florida and I was looking at the 790 duke. Thank you for such an informative review.
@@TheMissendenFlyer Yeah, took delivery today, same black one as on the vid. Unfortunately still waiting to take the first ride as the keys and papers went in a separate package which wasnt delivered yet. Disappointing.
I had a RC390 for a few years, and my only niggles were the limited tank range, and the rubbish fuel guage, which went from 1 bar down from full to 2 bars to empty in a mere ten miles or so - silly. But it was a cracking little bike - like the 790, ran very hot in traffic, and the fan would come on. Trevor Pope m/c in Gosport gave great service, so if you're in southern England, I recommend them highly.
2:30 indian manufacturer bajaj also does that on their pulser series bikes which is really nice for a relatively cheap 150cc bike. Anyways great review of the KTM 790 Duke. sadly we only have the duke 200 and duke 390 available here in india :(
I still think that muffler belongs in the rubbish can. Needs a tiny undertail mounted muffler so bad . . . I hope the cat's inside the steel bladder between the engine and rear wheel. Gas prices in your neck of the woods are HIGH (O . O) Great work, Mr. Flyer ! Look forward to more !
I actually like the stock can versus some of the aftermarket ones. It also works with the PP luggage ... which also hides it and is likely cheaper than an aftermarket can.
Yes, all exhausts should be neatly tucked away like an MT09's these days - big showy exhausts should of ended in the 80s along with pony tails 😁 That's the only thing I dislike about the bike.
The main problem with this is the Street Triple... I’m biased as I love Triumphs, but the Street Triple has impeccable fuelling, that beautiful triple, immense induction noise and looks that are much more ‘classic’. No doubt that this is great value and a brilliant bike, but the Street Triple is beautiful, whilst the looks of this are somewhat ‘challenging’. Plus KTM seem to love covering their bikes in that horrible, garish orange. The Street Triple just looks so much classier.
I think it funny you hate the mirrors! I think that fat look is awesome and tough looking. LOL. I am an American though and that;s just me. Awesome review on this bike and the 390 DUKE video as well. This video is very informative and perfectly usable. It's 2020 now and a bit out of date but a very informative review for me to be watching. I'm very close on deciding do I want the 390 Duke or the 690 Duke? Now you have me considering the 790. At a glance I thought that size would be getting to tall and heavy. After converting all your metrics to math I can understand the specs on a 790 look quite comfortable! Honestly now I'll have to price the 790 lol. I'm pretty sure the 690 will be my personal choice via cost specs ETC. But I wanna throw out a thank you for taking your time to make videos like these! They are SUPER helpful to a guy like me torn between 2 bikes. THANKS FOR YOUR TIME and opinions!!!
Always enjoy your reviews TMF - balanced down to earth and credible for real people. Would really like to see you review the Husqvarna Vitipilen 701 - using get 690 engine from KTM. Can't argue on the numbers on this bike though - pound for pound it's pretty lean and great bang for your buck. Reliability is the thing I'd want to hear about - and dealership care - seen a few grumblings which seem to be reasonable people with reasonable expectations being let down?

@@TheMissendenFlyer thanks. I like the look of both bikes!! Think I’m leaning towards the KTM though. Would you say both bikes similar in power? It’s a pity I can’t test ride them back to back due to covid.
One thing I have noticed with all KTMs, and which is slightly annoying, is how sensitive the day/night sensor is. Would be nice if they can sort that to ensure oncoming traffic don't think you're greeting them the whole time (or warning them 'bout traffic cops)
It's not all of them, they fixed it on the Super Adventures with a s/w update late last year. Mine works great now. So the 790 s/w team should have a word with SA s/w team ....
Wish I lived near Hemel Hempstead, I’ve got 3 quotes for my 890 first service and they’re all £200, breaks my heart cause It’s just oil and filters could do it myself but of course needs to be done to keep warranty valid
Curious....being a naked bike and no issues at 70mph with wind noise/turbelance etc. I just finished watching your 790 adventure review and your vision issues and noise complaints. the other bike had a small wind screen . may the screen be the cause of the noise ?
Hello Mr. Flyer - just curious to get your opinion. The KTM 790s are going a little cheaper in my area due to the 890 coming out. In fact, I can pick it up for less than the MT09. I test rode both and found the KTM to be little easier to ride (in terms of handing) but the Yamaha had more comfortable ergonomics. Both are really great bikes... so my question is, if you could only have one bike, which one would you chose from the two? FYI, the insurance on the KTM is less than the Yamaha, which I suppose is offset by the cheaper maintenance of the Yamaha . What's your experience as a overall package (including the servicing and running costs)? Lots of questions I know! - I appreciate your help if you can offer it. Thanks.
Yet another great review TMF, thank you. I have been a bit wary of buying KTMs in the past because of their reputation for being a bit unreliable, but it looks like they could have got over the issues now. Looks like a great bike and good value.
You don't care for fuel gauges that respond slowly or the ones that jump around. I am afraid that is just the choices we have given the odd geometry of motorcycle fuel tanks. I am sure sluggish fuel meters are simply damped to avoid displaying changes caused by moving fuel. Envision how fuel sloshes around in the tank just lifting it up off the stand, let alone under braking or riding giant wheelies, which I'm sure you do when we aren't watching :)
So, now that you have ridden this, how would you compare it to the MT 10 as far as fun factor and flick-a-bility. I am your size exactly and 49 yrs. Have a Harley but missing a fun bike like I rode before. Thanks. Love your reviews
Lovely looking bike and dream to tick most of the boxes. I hear a lot of bad press about faults with the bikes those being fluid leaks. I'm test riding Monday and will hopefully be as impressed with it as I am with my 390 Duke. Thanks for the great video.
Excellent review. I'm debating on what to get for my second bike. I'm in between the MT 09, this and the Street Triple. If I get this I'll probably keep it stock. I like the MT 09, but it doesn't come with the quick shifter in the US, so something I have to come out of pocket. I would want to flash the ECU and install a full exhaust too, so it'll cost about as much as the KTM. The street triple is nice too, but about $2000 more.

I've been thinking on buying either a used Ducati Streetfighter, a Z1000sx, a Ducati Monster 1200, a BMW S1000r, or a Kawasaki 2014 Z1000...but this one beats them all! (For me...)
Thanks again for enlighten me :).
Brilliant TMF, I love mine and and agree with everything you've said about it.It is the best all round bike I've ever had and there have been many.
That's a great looking bike, they have got the styling just right. Great review as always.
Thanks Andy - appreciate the kind comments....
Snatch throttle is easily solved when switched to rain mode. Better for low speed city commuting.
Broseidon thanks for the tip. I'm going to try it out when I demo it. Cheers!
And now there's a new 790 coming in!
great review Mr Flyer, once again you give a proper real world test with unbiased opinion, well done, truly inspiring.
Inspiring? Wow....I'll take it!
Fantastic review, I’m slowly leaning towards the duke rather than the mt07 , I’m coming from a adv350 , you answered all the questions I wanted answering thank you 👍
Glad I could help!
Top review TMF, very comprehensive, my hat's off to you especially for the night section
I rented this one last week in Switzerland. Unbelievable fun, light and powerful bike!
Yup, I'm getting one!
Wow this is one of the best completely detailed review i ever watched. Great video mate. Cheers
Wow, thanks!
KTM is awesome, street triple sounds mega... but think my money would end up going to the 790.
Nice review!
The seating position segment was really helpful! I hope you add this to all your reviews.
Yes I’ll try and remember...
Really great in depth review. These are coming to north America at the end of the year and man am I tempted to get back into riding with this machine.
Cheers Greg
A great review. This was my first visit on ur CHANNEL N ur presentation n coverage of all imp details made me subscribe ur channel. Keep uploading the videos in same manner
Welcome aboard!
Just made up my mind for me, I was leaning towards a street triple but I'm sold now 👍🏻
I was test-riding it too at the weekend.
Thanks for watching.....
Thanks Mr. TMF for this clear story --> Best goodlooking mid naked at the moment.
You mentioned maintenance but without touching on at least the ease of checking oil and some other fluid levels. Even if you get a garage to do something about an observed problem, it's still important to comment on these routine aspects I feel.
Good point - I’ll add it to my format - cheers!
@@TheMissendenFlyer u missed to mention about the braking performance!!
Pls share ur opinion
@@darvishhussain8602 brakes seems great
Awesome! Never seen a complete review as this one. Keep up the good work!
Love from India.
Thanks!
Looks brilliant with sensible power. The front guard looks a bit short for protecting the engine.
Great review! I bought one myself The Black Edition. Thanks
Cool!
Best review I've seen so far for the 790. I just ordered mine it's £7499.99 at the moment but I have to wait 3 weeks 😭
Congratulations!
Very practical long term review. Cheers mate!
Can’t think of anything - both very powerful for a beginner, take it easy....good luck!
@@TheMissendenFlyer thanks! Just a matter of personal preference then....
Cheers Jerry and glad we concur!
Oooh someone’s rocking a splendid summer tan
@8:20 It's quite often Friday around where I live too. We seem to get at least one a week lately and, if anything, i'd say they're becoming more common...
really one of the best reviews out there for that bike in my eyes :) Great job!
Great video. I currently own a 2012 KTM 350excf and want to retire from trail riding and see more of Florida and I was looking at the 790 duke. Thank you for such an informative review.
You’re welcome
Excellent review and summary, Thank You and have a nice week ahead. ps. Nice picture of your bikes in the store front.
Cheers!
Not a fan of naked bikes but I like this one. Great review.
Awesome video cheers. I was torn between the street triple and the ktm. Now I know which I’m going for. 😊😊😊
790 got all bits, but on 790 adventure R you have to pay for quickshifter and bike price is around 12k
Im about to buy one, thx TMF for in depth review, it helped me a lot!
Glad to be of service!
@@TheMissendenFlyer Yeah, took delivery today, same black one as on the vid. Unfortunately still waiting to take the first ride as the keys and papers went in a separate package which wasnt delivered yet. Disappointing.
I have discovered cruise control would have been great - I'll be seeing if the 790 ADVs cruise control is installable.
@@Aiken47 did you installed cruise control on duke 790?
God bless you sir! You always do a great job reviewing bikes. Gotta throw you a like!
Thank you!
Love the old speckled hen in the garage.
Great review too
I had a RC390 for a few years, and my only niggles were the limited tank range, and the rubbish fuel guage, which went from 1 bar down from full to 2 bars to empty in a mere ten miles or so - silly. But it was a cracking little bike - like the 790, ran very hot in traffic, and the fan would come on. Trevor Pope m/c in Gosport gave great service, so if you're in southern England, I recommend them highly.
Nice one…
Great video
Very nice review
Thumbs up 👍
Thanks for sharing
Peace
You do great work! One of the best, if not the best, when it comes to practical reviews. Hello from Seattle, bro! #SafeRides 🤙🤙🤙
You're too kind sir!
2:30 indian manufacturer bajaj also does that on their pulser series bikes which is really nice for a relatively cheap 150cc bike. Anyways great review of the KTM 790 Duke. sadly we only have the duke 200 and duke 390 available here in india :(
abhinav sreekar 790 is coming next year. Just hope it's around 7-8 lacs. Honda cbr650 is priced at 7.5 so... Fingers crossed.
I still think that muffler belongs in the rubbish can. Needs a tiny undertail mounted muffler so bad . . . I hope the cat's inside the steel bladder between the engine and rear wheel.
Gas prices in your neck of the woods are HIGH (O . O)
Great work, Mr. Flyer ! Look forward to more !
JIGA BACHI like all ktms, before it. So you hit the power parts catalogue at the dealer.
You'll be wanting the AUSTIN Racing exhaust then...
Nicely done. Pertinent information. No extraneous nonsense.
Cheers Pietro!
Love your video... definitely gonna buy it in future=)
Ended up buying a Duke 690R demo as the dealership wanted to get rid of it before they had the 790 in stock. Wish they also had an R version
Thanks TMF! Great work; very informative; keep it up!
Will do and thanks....
Love your detailed reviews, waiting for this bike in India. Love from India..
Thanks Vivek...
good review, but not sure what you mean by long term, how many miles you did? :) I'm getting this engine but in Adventure R package.
Trivia fact: Same bike 44teeth took to zwarte coss event (check vehicle reg)
majorjam1 and that, kids, is why you never buy a “press bike”. Who knows how much they’ve been flogged.
You’re welcome Jeff!
Very good review! Well explained! Thanks a lot!
Thanks or watching....
Good review - I’m really tempted by a mid-size, jump on and go bike to share the garage with my Tiger 1200!
Sounds like a good plan to me!
Thanks Richard, yes the reliability/dealer experience is something I can't comment on with a loaned bike alas.....
Hei, i want to get som advice from you, im after having a daily commitment bike, necked bike, and I was in between 600-800cc I live in Oslo Norway and as you know its very cold from November to April, but want to use the bike during its ok for me to use off cause I cant use it when its very cold, and snow, anyway, what was you option in between Duke 790, CB650, Yamaha MT-07, 2021 Triumph Trident 660, I have look for duke at the dealer they don't have its only available on used website which is pretty well, I love it but 2021 Triumph Trident 660 is another choose that I think about,
I hope with your experience you can advice me back,
I ike the CB650 personally - but go with whichever you like the look of....
@@TheMissendenFlyer what do you think about Duke 790, with it Technology, by the way im 170cm 5ft.57cm, and 72kg,
Thanks for your advice my daily commitment is around 30km go and back, so I will not use it too much, beside I have car that standby if the weather is not fear the day,
Thanks for advice
The 790 has a lot of fans - Im not one of them but it is a good bike....
@@TheMissendenFlyer Hei, what do you think BMW F 900R
Good review as always 👍🏼, I have my eyes on the 890 duke r when it comes out, hope the oil leak issues I’ve read from reviews that this one had have been sorted
£400 For a full service that's 5% of the cost of the bike, yes don't get it serviced at a main dealership. I get my ktm 790 serviced at a regular bike garage they charge me £ 175 for a full service.
That's great until you need a warranty repair... do the two years in KTM, then do it yourself.
Probably cos I'm an old git but on modern bikes there's too much electronics and not enough centre stand .
definitely a case of old git
@@ikbendusan 😂😂😂
How can we arrange a saddle bag (not a tail bag, both side saddle) on the back seat? You would need to get custom holders at the back, yes?
Yes - the exhaust is the problem of course...
TheMissendenFlyer thanks! Look forward to customising this when it comes in town.
Ya know...all my euro dealers are 2 hours away. I don’t think I can use that as an excuse anymore to keep me from buying, Ill be missing out! I’m torn between the looks of this thing. I love the 1290 SDR look and the GT and the 1090 adv R - but not in love with this one yet but I don’t hate it.
Great review!
Cheers Jool - I'm with you on that!
Hi, love the vids and posts on you tube, Keep them coming!! I’ve a quick question.
Would you pick a Yamaha MT 09 SP 2019 or a 790 ktm duke 2020? I’ll be using it to commute and fun on the weekends.
Thanks Ro
Hmmm tricky - both great - go with the one you like the look of.....
I have a KTM and it's fine it switches easily but so what, you can read all the info, who cares
inside leg? what size length are your jeans?
KTM and pilchards..... mmmmm what a combo 🦈... Fantastic review, thanks TMF - Maggie and Mack, Huddersfield
Thanks for watching (and noticing the pilchards)....
Wish I lived near Hemel Hempstead, I’ve got 3 quotes for my 890 first service and they’re all £200, breaks my heart cause It’s just oil and filters could do it myself but of course needs to be done to keep warranty valid
Long term review "I've only had the bike for about 2 weeks now"
lul what
Two week long term review. :-)
Exactly I was like wtf?! 😂
Compared to other "first ride" reviews out there, this is at least a medium term review, give him that! :P
Test rides are about an hour. You get more information here. You aren't likely to be able to ride at night, in the rain etc.
Curious....being a naked bike and no issues at 70mph with wind noise/turbelance etc. I just finished watching your 790 adventure review and your vision issues and noise complaints. the other bike had a small wind screen . may the screen be the cause of the noise ?
I’m sure it was!
Can you add how the pillion seat and seated position is. Looks ok on the 790?
Thanks.
I prefer the Yamaha - just my personal preference....
@@TheMissendenFlyer Thanks :)
Between STR RS, Z900, MT09 and KTM 790. Which would you recommend for commuting, track and canyon rides.
STR RS
Thanks. Between the latest STR RS and the STR R standard models, are they on par in terms of performance wise?
Have you ever heard of problems with the gasket behind the front sprocket leaking?
No I haven’t.....
Yet another great review TMF, thank you. I have been a bit wary of buying KTMs in the past because of their reputation for being a bit unreliable, but it looks like they could have got over the issues now. Looks like a great bike and good value.
Pastie be careful. I’ve had Ktm. Problematic is all I’d say
Pastie, iv always had ktm , they just like someone who knows what there doing to maintain them.
How and why do brand new Ktm’s break down then?
They break down? News to me
My 790 is fine but then I have it properly serviced at a main KTM dealer
You don't care for fuel gauges that respond slowly or the ones that jump around. I am afraid that is just the choices we have given the odd geometry of motorcycle fuel tanks. I am sure sluggish fuel meters are simply damped to avoid displaying changes caused by moving fuel. Envision how fuel sloshes around in the tank just lifting it up off the stand, let alone under braking or riding giant wheelies, which I'm sure you do when we aren't watching :)
Does an Abus 8077 disk lock fit under the pillion sit? Thanks!
No idea!
So, now that you have ridden this, how would you compare it to the MT 10 as far as fun factor and flick-a-bility. I am your size exactly and 49 yrs. Have a Harley but missing a fun bike like I rode before. Thanks. Love your reviews
In my opinion the MT10 eats this for breakfast!
Street Triple is the way to go ;0)
How does it compare directly to the MT09...in terms of price and mid weight they are competitors...Im looking but not made my mind up yet
Personally I prefer the 790 - but both great bikes...go with the one you like the look of most!
@@TheMissendenFlyer cheers. I like both...maybe the mt09 so as that's a nice bit of kit too. .I'll try them both and see thanks
