Bad guy trying to get the Doctor to their side? Fairly common.
Bad guy trying to get the Doctor to be their *leader*? That's fairly unique, and one of the reasons why I like this episode. It really did look like Finch did want the Doctor's counsel in running the new universe, if nothing more than out of the pragmatic realization that the Doctor would be more capable in doing so than they would.
And Mr. Finch makes this offer with such class and sincerity, it almost makes you forget he and his ilk are child-eaters.

The fact that he lets Sarah Jane try to convince the Doctor against accepting his offer shows just how good of a villain he is. None of that screaming out anger because someone denies his intention, he understands the competition and allows the Doctor to make his own decision, even if it disappointed him.

I mean at the end of the day I think Mr Finch was self aware enough to realise The Doctor was more intelligent, more dangerous, and a better leader, than all of his people combined.
With The Doctor by his side, Mr Finch wouldn’t just be a God with no idea what to do with the powers he received. Instead he would be a God guided by the smartest man in the universe, giving him ultimate knowledge, power, and respect across the universe. Maybe not even just that, with the Time Lord’s vast knowledge and the ability to travel to parallel worlds, they could rule every single universe and have full control over the entire multiverse.

I love Ten but he had me worried on a couple of occasions. You can see here that he was actually tempted by the offer made to him. He actually considers using the souls of hundreds of children to bring back his own planet. At the end of 'The Waters of Mars' his 'Time lord Victorious' speech is terrifying. He was so close to embracing power and losing whatever good was in him. If it wasn't for his companions I wonder if he would have truly remained 'good'. For God's sake just look at 'Turn Left' where he died because he gave into hate and it killed him because there was no one there to save him from himself.

It's not as if you get somebody to do some work for you that you take anything away from them. If anything they seem to gain out of it since they get more intelligent.

The thing is, the Doctor considers it - and it scares him.
He held a power similiar to this before, on the last day of the Time War. The Moment, the last work of the ancients of Gallifrey. A weapon of ultimate mass destruction, capable of standing in judgement over whoever uses it.
The very source of all his pain, the moment when it was impossible to get it right - when he had to weigh the universe against his own people, with no way out. Forced to make an impossible choice.
To hold a power like the Moment again, to hold this power, it would have destroyed him. This regeneration doesn't even consider the War Doctor a Doctor, hence his number: 10. The tenth Doctor, but the eleventh face (and, later, the twelth face as well, hence why the 11th Doctor faced his final death, instead of the 13th).

If you are gonna start to be critical towards Moffat then i'd say you should start with the plot holes from the RTD era and then think twice before you begin to criticise a TV show that has been on for 51 years...

***** It is mainly because i feel people complain so much about Moffat like he is the worst person in the world when all he actually did was changing the tone of Doctor Who... And its WHENEVER i look in the comments on a doctor who video whether its Moffat era or RTD era then people ALWAYS complain about Moffat and says they want RTD back without ever considering the fact that RTD had at least as many plot holes as the others (Including Moffat) And honestly i think that if you are gonna complain about plot holes then start from the beginning rather than attacking moffat like he is the worst person in the world... People just seems to forget RTD or the other plot holes really quickly

MyBlog1 I do understand your point... And im glad you are not all black and white about it :) But still personally i dont think it was a good idea to erase gallifrey from the show as i think the time lords are very interesting and that i would love to see them on the new show now that we have higher budgets and so on :( But of course i still understand your point which is actually something i have never really thought of... But well when i realise something like that i usually just think to myself that for a show that has been running for 51 years there is bound to be some plotholes sooner or later... :/ Unfortunately...

The new series play more with the fairy tale theme, where nothing really ends, no one really dies... which is great, but far from the wisdom of the former series.

I don't think as good of an episode about moving on exists as Heaven Sent. Plus no one really died in RTD's Era either. Well, no one important. If we're talking about side characters they drop like flies in Moffat's and RTD'S Era, but you're kidding yourself if you pretend RTD didn't give fairy tale endings to the main cast. Rose never died she was trapped in another dimension, except when she was wasn't and got her own human version of 10 to live with. Martha just left and went on to a much better life as a leader and free Lancer against alien threats. Jack came back to life as an immortal. Simm's Master was revived with year old lipstick. Donna just needed a brain wipe (she ended up getting married and maturing even without her memories from the Doctor). Not a SINGLE companion has died (and stayed dead) since the classic Era. Let's ignore how the Daleks were genocided every series finale and brought back the next, Davros literally getting magically saved from the time war, the time lords themselves popping out of the time lock, the Master's paradox machine just resetting everything so there are 0 consequences.

Was Anthony Head's character actually wrong? His whole position was to try and gain a better control of the universe, but he was also willing to accept he wasn't the man to wield that power. He was willing to turn it over to someone wiser, for the greater good.
The Doctor ultimately defies him because Sarah Jane says that we need pain and loss in order to move forward; its an integral part of our lives. But think about that for a second. You could say the same for all advances in knowledge and technology. If pain and loss are so important, then the Doctor should fight to stop any development in medical research. Why try and prolong lives, when death is so important to our existence? Why ever try to push against the basics of existence, if they are so valuable?
I actually think the Doctor made the wrong choice here.

    • @Daioblis
      @Daioblis 9 років тому +14

No. He's made the right choice. The very right choice. That power is far too much for *_anyone_* to control, even The Doctor himself. There's already one god. No need for another, because if so, then the Whole of Creation will be in greater jeopardy, and a war will ignite, a war far greater than any other, a war that will make the Last Time War itself seem like children's tantrum.
      The war of two gods.

I loved this episode, and oh, can you hear his voice shake at the beginning when he's describing the Skasis Paradigm? I bet he thought about it before, I bet the Time Lords know that it's a possibility because they tried, at least some of them must have, but they were too rigid in their way of thinking to do it... They, and the Doctor, seem to have tried absolutely everything during the War, I bet this was considered too and it didn't work for them. And now he's close...
Two thing I don't get: 1. why don't Krillitanes use their oil more often to try this? 2. Why would breaking one giant monitor shut down all the whole computer system? That was just a monitor... Sloppy writing like this makes me annoyed, and sadly it's present in all eras of Doctor Who.

It didn't shut down the whole system, that was just anger.

The monitor breaking didn’t do that, it was to symbolize him breaking the temptation

It’s moments like this that prove why the Doctor always needs his companions. They keep him grounded and stop him from giving into temptation. Even when Finch tries to convince Sarah that she could be with the Doctor forever and never age, she knows what he’s doing is wrong and gets through to Ten.

Wait, the doctor was actually tempted by the offer?
I thought he was gonna act like that, and then do a speech completely denying his offer
He rly did listen to that guy? Oh dang
Well, glad his companions are there for him to help him realize the good, to not be consumed by hate

I do too. I think it has far too much potential to be thrown away like this, into one episode only.

Orlando Soto Leyton No, that's too much. The Doctor can't 'use' the *Skasis Paradigm*, because you can only control it when you unlock it, and when you do unlock it, you become a god. Besides, The Doctor knows that it's very dangerous to wield such powers.

Orlando Soto Leyton Doesn't change a thing. This is godhood we're talking about.

+Diablos True, but you can always use it as a storyline for The Master

The Master trying to unlock it? Plausible.

All of these ideas of the Doctor almost losing it has given me an idea.
What about a story where the Doctor thinks he's going up against someone like the Master, but we don't actually see them through the episode. Then near the end we're shown that it's a future Doctor trying to stop their past self from making some horrible mistake?
Or really just any story where the Doctor, for some reason, ends up fighting himself (as in same incarnation, no Valeyard nonsense)? There's probably a better way of doing it than how I described above.
