Cleaning + modding my 10 year old mechanical keyboard - FILCO Majestouch Ninja TKL Cherry MX Red

- Another one for the tech nerds and computer geeks.
Before going all out and bulding a completely custom board, I wanted to try and improve my existing original FILCO Majestouch Ninja TKL with some sound dampening and lubrication of the factor stabilisers.
I've owned countless mechanical keyboards over the years from Razer, Coolermaster, Logitech and Keychron. I've sold them all, but never the FILCO because so far for me it just has a different feel, even from factory, one of the best of its time.

10 years 🙈🙈🙈
Filco made really high quality keyboards.
I have 3 of them for 7 years and no issue at all.
They definitely don't make them like this anymore :)
I got mine out of the closet on the weekend and removed all the gateron blacks. threw in some foam and lubed
boba u4 switches. totally amazing and worth the time desoldering.
Definitely man, they don't make keyboards like this anymore! :D
I have the same with 7 years old. :) Built quality is really good.
Agreed!
I recently fixed up mine after having stickey keys from spilling juice on it 10 years ago. These things are built well.
Yep, like tanks!
I have the same keyboard! Love it so much ❤️
Definitely one of the best made, the quality is second to none :)
I'd also recommend getting some foam inserts for your spacebar to deaden the sound further if you still find it to be too loud.
I have a Majestouch 2 and recently considered building myself a new keyboard. Despite having the MX Silent Red version of the Majestouch 2 with soft o-rings installed I find it's still too loud for my liking. After looking for some replacements I realized I'm actually really attached to my keyboard and don't really want to replace it. I'm going to try and get another used Filco for cheap and have a go at desoldering the switches so I can lube and film them as well as add foam between the plate and PCB. Apparently there's a way to make the PCB hot-swappable too.
I’ll definitely look into that, the space bar could definitely do with some tuning :)
your channel is really cool, cars, keyboard, and pc
Thank you man, appreciate it :D
Hi, great video! I’m about to do the same as you and I have 2 question
1) what lube did you use
2) how difficult it was to remove the outer frame. I saw another video and it looked really hard
Thanks!
Hey thanks man! Sorry for the late reply.
1. Full transparency, I used some thick ointment my girlfriend had laying around 😆 it had a good thick consistency when I tested. It's still going great haha.
2. It can seem difficult because the frame is so well built and would, but take your time. I used some old credit cards etc to hold open the clips on one end while I did the other side. After that it came apart really easily :)
Wow i have the same keyboard but with blue switches i just want to take em apart to clean n lube them
Great keyboards still! I would definitely recommend to do it :)
Hey dude, any chance you could tell me where you got that foam? hoping to do the same! thanks!
Hey, sorry for the late reply, the foam is actually from a music store. They use it for sound deadening etc. in studios.
Hey man , my lovely 12 year old MJST2 Ninja TKL has one switch thats breaking down (left CTRL), any advice on possible repair solutions? Do I have to remove the switch and resolder a new one?
Hey, sorry for the late reply. Yeah that sounds like a solder job unfortunately
Hàng stock mà nghe phê vãi bác ạ
I got alot of keyboard, filco is definitely one of my favorites, and it's weird, it's Cherry seem higher quality than others
Definitely one of the best ever made! :) Most modern keyboards aren't made with the same quality.
@@kevin_huynh it is an oudated. Filco has fallen hard
you should try Leopold which is vastly better than Filco
Ah....my old Filco. I have the original otaku version with Cherry blues in mint condition plus a full set of custom keycaps from a Geekhack group buy. I can't decide if I should sell it and invest in a 65% or get the aluminum case......AH!!!! I was my first mechanical, but it's just sitting in its box, the original box also mint. I DON'T KNOW WHAT TO DO!!!
Haha I know, I was in the same boat. Decided to keep mine for memories and its always a great keyboard!
hi can you tell where to get dota 2 keycaps for filco i m currently using one
Hey! Any Cherry MX key caps should work fine :) I can’t remember where I got mine from sorry
Have you tried it with brown switches?
Not the Filco, but I used to have a Coolermaster Master Keys TKL with Cherry Brown Switches. I like them a lot too 🙂
You think brown switches is better than cherry MX Red ?
Nice video !
I like both, but it depends. Reds are much faster in terms of actuation, so for me I feel like I can press keys faster on reds, but it might be all in my head. However I do find that I make a lot more mistakes when typing on red because it is too easy to press adjacent keys etc. Thats when I appreciate browns because the extra little tactile bump in the switch prevents those little mistakes. Although I don't think I'm a very good typer at all and I have fat fingers 😅
@@kevin_huynh Okay thanks ! now i have my idea i'll take red switch . I saw a lot video about this keyboard and switches and now im sure, thanks for your reply .
you should try tempest mod on your board
Defintely something I want to do!

I bought a used Filco Majestouch 2 tkl on offer up for $15. That thing still worked but it was disgusting!! I opened it up and it had cigarette smell nailclippings, dust, gunk, hair etc. I gave it a good cleaning with 90% alcohol and a tooth brush. The person thay owned must be a dirty person. I replaced the keycaps and did the tempest tape mod. I just ordered new stabilizers and lube. Currently sanding the cover to paint it. Going to do a detachable cable mod after.
Awesome man! Let me know how the cable mod goes, I would be very interested :)
Stuff today aren't built like they used to be.
Definitely not :(
Bro got a keyboard with mx reds 🤣
Why does everybody try to mimic Mr types
Who's Mr types?
@@kevin_huynh
Taeha Types, the guy who you're trying so hard to copy.
tomas varis Did “mr types” do a filco mod?
