How to CLEAN Your Mechanical Keyboard Safely!

- Опубліковано 30 лип 2024
- Mechanical keyboards are a great addition to any desk. Due to their sturdy nature, they will probably last more than a few years too. Unfortunately, their long shelf life means that they can get very dirty or greasy. There are several ways you can clean your mechanical keyboard safely, and in this guide I show you the step-by-step process to do this. All you need is some dish detergent, warm water, some Q-tips, and a few rags. If you've used a vacuum, alcohol, or water to clean keyboard dirt, dust and grime off, you may already be familiar with the steps to safely clean mechanical keyboard.
This guide works for pretty much every keyboard out there. Whether you have a Razer Black Widow Chroma, Corsair Strafe RGB, cherry mx or blue switches, or similar.

a really big tip that i recommend for the reassembling part is to do the bigger keys first before the smaller ones. So for example you should attach the space bar, backspace, left and right shift keys, capslock before doing numbered keys and letter keys.

For anyone now watching this - do not use the type of keycap puller shown in the video. Use a wire keycap puller to ensure you do not damage your switches or keycaps, especially if you plan on doing this often
Really clean and straight forward. This was helpful to me thanks for the video.
Just use the q-tip to completely clean it if you do not own a brush like I do. It's harder to do but works just as fine.

Much appreciated!
One additional thing I recommend is when the caps are off you hold your keyboard upside down and make sure there is an area underneath where you can wipe the dirt away, when holding your keyboard upside down you tap on its backside and dirt may come out.
I come back to this about once a year just to make sure I am following the method. Cheers!

Honestly, there was so much I enjoyed about the video. My keyboard looks like a hairball, and this helped me so much. I've had my mechanical keyboard for around 5 years now and I'm surprised it's not dead yet. (I bought the cheapest one I could find of decent quality). Quick tip:
Don’t use isopropyl alcohol instead of the water/soap Technique. The dust and Grime will basically just clump together as a layer and still be on the keys

Just a small tip. You can use hot water and even boiling water, the plastic used to make keyboard keycaps (ABS or PBT) melts on 200°C+ so you're safe. It will get rid of the grease and dirt much quicker and better. I did it myself and the results were great.. As for cleaning the keyboard itself, water is sufficent in most cases, but if you spilled a sugary drink or beer on it (like I did) you'll have to use alcohol to clean it.
I have a Corsair K95 with PBT caps and I spilled beer all over it. I thought I'll have to throw it away because almost every key was sticky and would either get stuck when I pressed it or would be hard to press because it was already stuck..
I spilled caffee on my hyperx alloy fps bro and it stops working sometimes, like it breaks connection.... I dont know if its dead, should i buy new keyboard or what
I would worry about the letters wearing off rather than the keys literally melting. Especially since half of the letters on my keyboard have already been reduced to indecipherable blobs just from my sweaty hands
Technically, weren't you already using alcohol to clean it when you spilled the beer on it? 😅
@@madman19979 what a fun little game of what letter is this XD. on a side note you can buy keycaps online, the ones i own have the letters go all the way through the cap to allow rgb lighting. my friend just picked up auhigou keycaps (or however you spell it)
@@madman19979 Exactly what happened to my old keyboard, literally half of the keys where missing their letters. On the bright side I am now really good at typing without looking at the keyboard and have memorized where every key is.

You’re right, the drying process took a while, but I was working so it didn’t matter. I should’ve included the time it took to dry and put the caps back on lol. My bad
I have a Corsair mechanical keyboard too (K70). The keycap puller came with the keyboard. One thing you missed was removing and separately cleaning the wrist rest (mine had a lot of gunk underneath). It's a little tricky to remove this part. You have to bend the rest down almost 90 degrees (push it past the edge of the table), and then push it straight down to release it. Also, I used a plastic food container with a top to shake the keycaps with more agitation.

compressed air for the drying and cleaning of the board definitely speeds up the process, and using an alcohol to clean the board is much safer than water since it would evaporate much faster and not run as much of a risk of a short when you power it back on.
