@@scuffed_graphics7262 all thanks to @Andi 🙏

Wrong time timestamp of 3 layers electrical tape, anyway thank u
big thanks
Great job done!
It's an interesting topic to get different sound effects based on tape mod.
This is the video I need. Thank you so much for this comparisons!
I think the point of the tapes is that they stop the sound from spreading around the material so the sound just kind of getting muted quicker than without tape, basically like your normal sound is a whole note and the tape makes it a half note if you get what I mean. Great video! I'll surely try this out when my first custom kit comes
Yes that’s right. Have fun modding!
Nice you know whole notes do you learn music
I'm glad that someone did this test, good job!
thank you for doing this tedious test. I've been wondering about this myself.
It also adds another layer for sound to travel through. Lower sounds travel through substances more effectively than higher pitched sounds
I did not see the mixing of the tapes coming. Well done.
Thank you very much for this informative video! I'm new in the hobby and this was very helpful! You went above and beyond on this topic and I'm especially thankful you took the time to test combinations.
Damn underrated channel , Love from Malaysia
The amount of dedication to make this video tho. Respect. you earn a sub.
one layer of cloth tape and the sound changed massively
Great video as usual
God bless you for making this!!!
I haven't seen anyone try the tape mod with the "cotton" athletic tape used by players to wrap up their hands and fingers it is a little thicker than normal cloth tape and gaffers tape and may be a thing worth looking into but great video!
Great point, yeah I did consider this, but felt it was not viable for most people cause it can cost double or triple.
@@andiyao In the world of custom keebs this price tag is nothing.
Just wondering the same thing, i happened to have elastic sports tape at hand, but haven't try it.
Super useful, thanks! tried 2x electrical tape with blue switches and it sounds clickily and not echo-y awesome
I have the same problem, but echo is very metallic (top metallic, bottom plastic). So I'm assuming it won't make switches any quieter? Did you cover PCB, base, or both? What if I fully cover back of PCB, base, and roof?
@@WellBeSerious12 I did bottom of PCB and then sheet foam in the case. If you like hearing that click... this is for you (and me)
whats the difference between masking tape and painters tape? which one is better to use in modding keyboard?
Nice editing dude
What brand of electrical tape did you use? Will the Scotch 33+ brand leave a mess on the pcb?
Great work!
When you are doing the sound demos with combos of tape which tapes goes on first? I see there is a order to the way you listed it but I'm not sure if the top or bottom of the list goes onto the PCB first.
The order in the video should be bottom tape first, then the next tape is the one above it. Sort of like the same order you would make a “stack”. Tbh it doesn’t make any difference in sound if they’re stuck properly, safest bet is always masking first in case u need to remove it in the future! :)
What about Magic tape(easy peel, doesnt leave residue) then put the other tapes?
I have modded my redragon 530 pro with painters but it has an battery inside
I have made sure to leave enough room but im still worried it might catch fire
If i put electrical tape over the painters tape
Would that be a better idea to prevent any fire hazards?
should i tape the bottom of the pcb or should i tape the case, (im using electrical tape and gk61)
May I know what key caps are u using and where to get it?
- I tried foam tape although I would recommend using a base layer of sticky tape because that will at least allow 2 layers or more if applicable, simply because foam tape is rather thicker than most tapes!
- I have also tried using Alien tape (gel/polymer tape) which is the thickest "tape" I have tried while experimenting different tapes for different sounds. I have not found any videos of anyone using Alien tape for keyboard PCB modding, but it definitely works!
For the cloth tape can I use medical cloth tape?
thanks so much dude!! I like ur channel
good video, exactly what i need, thankss
For the sticky tape, would you say more layers we're better?
What do u think is the best for making the pitch premium sound like?
I wanted to make my magegee mk box red switch more clacky
try just masking/painters tape!
Whats switch do u use? Its lubed?
(not in list) painter's - white chocolate/caramel frappuccino
gaffer's/cloth - white chocolate frappuccino
(not in list) mounting/foam - caramel frappuccino
duct - white chocolate mocha
masking/pale yellow - caramel mocha
packing/clear/sticky - latte
electrical - mocha
pe foam - coffee-flavored Fiji water
none - water
Thank you for this video. My favorites are (from your and ConsumerReviewTech video):
painter's, gaffer's/cloth, mounting/white foam/double-sided, and duct. What surprised me is packing/clear/sticky and masking together sounded the closest to my ideal 'raining on stones/rocks' sound. Weird.
cloth tape sounds amazing i better cop that
So much work in this video wow
FINALLY, someone managed to do the tape mod using duct tape
Which tape you recommend to use ? I am looking for a tape that won't leave any residue on the PCB. Cause when I do this mod I intent to leave it on. And don't care about it like for years.
Masking Tape first for sure. Then I prefer multiple layers of sticky tape to deepen the sound.
On my keyboard I did 2 layers of masking tape and 1 layer of sticky tape, it sounds really good and poppy
If u have a battery should u use electric tape to avoid having fire hazards?
would you think 3 masking tape and 3 duct tape would sound similar to 3 blue painter's tape and 9 packing tape?
is it bad to use duct tap (3 layers)?
could you send me the link of the electrical tape?
Is masking tape really good when it terms of longer use? (I’m new for tape modding)
I’ve been researching online that people often say it did or did not leave a sticky residue on the PCB. What is your opinion for this?
It leaves less residue compared to other tapes. Most tapes aren’t designed to be left on for months or years with no residue in mind. High quality masking no tape is a good compromise.
damn nice video thats some work
what do you think is the best combo for a tray mount board (rk61, gk61) planning to tape mod my board, so this would really help! thanks! :)
Multiple layers of masking will do the trick! Also some foam in the case helps remove any hollowness.
do you have any links to the masking tape that you would reccomend, and how many layers?
3-5 layers is ideal. No specific links to masking tape soz, just go for any masking/painters tape from your crafts store 🙂
i might be 1 layer is masking tape since it leaves less residue then foam tape then cloth tape and the outher is electrical tape
Thanks helped a lot
Can you do something like different foam, lube or switches sound test. I would love to see that
Yep, when I get the time to lube some switches.
Electrical Tape is the best for Tape Mod!
Painter's masking tape adhesive sucks and will leave a dried mess after some time on your PCB. As well I am not sure the chemical compatibility of the adhesive used.
As for normal electrical tape, people tend to buy it from the dollar store which is not the same as Scotch 33+. Those tapes will leave a gooey mess which is a royal pain to remove.
Electrical tape actually damages the keyboard I don't recommend at first it's normal the more you use it you will notice there will be a delay when you press certain keys
@@goldak3854 I'm sorry but that makes no sense. The tape doesn't enter the switch and cause a physical delay, nor can it cause any kind of electrical delay. It's an insulating tape.
you from australia?
What's the brand of your duct tape? And also you just earned yourself a new subscriber! You explained everything very well! You're underated tbh. I hope you can answer my question😁
I think mine is as cheap as I could find. Paint Partner 48x30mm Duct Tape. If you like the sound, I’d probably advice getting better quality tape.
TY sir👍
how many layers will you suggest, 2 or 3?
3!
Can you do this with the switches attached?
Yes!
Would you recommend a layer of masking tape than electrical tape?
Yes, generally masking tape is easy and cheap, so it's a go to!
You have an drop alt?
How poor I have an drop AltGr
Great thumbnail.
Weird, imo the 2 layer in all tape types had a slight hint of metal pingy sound(marble?) while 3 layer just sound muted.
that might just be excuse the screws are a bit loose, that can be fixed by using orings though
@@velvetvelvet dont use orings
I feel like tape is the easiest way to spark the sound profile. I am getting tired of the painters tape sound. This video is a great source of ideas.
Hello, um what is the best option for deep and thocky sounds?
Masking tape first then duct tape layers on top, the more layers the deeper the sound.
@@andiyao I see, thank you.
Is the difference between just masking tape and masking+duct very big?
I personally hear a difference but it is quite minor.
I can’t figure out what electrical tape is good can someone help me
cloth tape made it very deep tbh
where can i buy that cloth tape?
Try your local hardware store!
I think the electrical tape sounded the best overall, but I would never use it because the adhesive always gets all over everything. I think there would be a lot more of a difference in the sound profiles if the switches were lubed. I don't know if these ones were, but they were loud and scratchy sounding, so I'm just guessing.
Yup these are just holy pandas left intentionally stock for loudness and less deep sound
If you want to make use of electrical tape, maybe you can try to put in a layer or two of masking tape first, then a layer or two of electrical tape. Avoids the problem of the electrical tape adhesive mess
It absorbs the pcb vibrations
As someone who works with Electrical Tape on a regular Basis. DO NOT use this for a longer Period of time.
At some point the glue gets super soft and sticks to everthing.
It's not a Pleasant feeling on a Cable, so i dont think it will be on a PCB.
Agreed! A layer of masking first is the best bet for now.
only 592 subs you deserve more
which conibnation would you recomend for a deeper sound?
Masking x3, Duct x3
@@andiyao also, which order do you put it in? (if it makes a difference
yo thanks!
should i put the masking tape or the electrical tape on first
Masking tape
I liked masking x2 and electrical x1
ITS really work!!
is electric tape flame retardant good?
Fairly, not the cheapest, marbles the sound.
ive tried masking tape and some of the keys dont type on the screen. i need help ASAP
damaged pcb
I do have electrical and masking tape. With which one should i go??
Both
@@axylotl1878 so wait 1 layer with taping tape and 1 layer with electrical tape. Are you sure
Fantastic video, i did 4x masking tape 2x duct tape before finding this video on my keyboard and it did wonders.
Duct tape on it own seems to be pretty mediocre but it does wonders when combined with masking tape for some reason, im not gonna retape it, since masking/duct tape is luckely my favorite combination out of what you have tested.
Keep in mind that the PCB gets THIC! When using so much tape!!! I nearly broke my keyboard by overstuffing the little space left in it with cotton foam after doing my tape mod.
what do you think will give the most pop?
Tough one, cause any sort of tape deadens sound rather than bring it out more. Maybe the electrical/stretchable tapes
3 layers duct tape best sound!
what happens when you put in the whole roll tho 👀
👀💦
I might just put like 5 layers of masking tape lol
is tape mod with masking tape flammable?
Be sure any tape you buy is non-conductive!
@@andiyao is masking tape conductive?
@@ryza9791 Nope :)
@@andiyao pogggg
Frog tape!
i'd done 2 layer of masking, painter, cloth tape under my pcb,and extra 2 layer on certain row to give similar sound profile across all alphabet row..sounds alot but its just barely 1mm+ thicker
Is gaffer tape sticky?
Yes sticky, but it's built to not leave residue. Also hard to pull off, so I recommend a masking layer first.
@@andiyao ooh ok thx I will try the mod once I got a keyboard that sounds better than my cursed blue switches
I'm going to add a butyl sound dampening mat
Please help me someone...
I did the tempest mod with masking tape
And after putting the keyboard together the middle rows RGB failed
Watched this all the way through and realized I was on 1.25 speed 🤦♂️. Watched it again on normal speed.
Thanks, I really appreciate you watching it through!
Cloth tape sounds like a horse galloping on cobblestone or some shit. My brain we t somewhere man lol.
I actually thought the same!
I got 13 layers of Masking tape mod💀
2:42 2:53 4:52 5:04 9:07
why was Jesus on the thumbnail xd

bro the thumbail is messed up.
EE
Honestly IMO it sounded better with no tape. All the sound is reflected right in your face.
Everyone else ignore this comment this is more me in the future
Masking x3 duck x3
I feel like I just hate everything about this. People who have literally no IT knowledge doing little crafts like this.
shut up
i feel like you havent even seen 1% of the custom keyboard modding community and what lengths they do to make a keyboard sound even a tiny bit better
