    Eureka!!! I’ve just watched this for the first time and what a joy to see it crash when you try to convert the track to a route. I’ve had exactly this problem but Garmin support in the UK said to delete and reinstall Basecamp which I did but it still had some legacy files tucked away which even using a cleaning routing didn’t pick up. So what a breath of fresh air, thank you. I’ll watch again as I have to put some routes together for some training I’m doing. What is also really important is to make sure with regular deviations from the route, I can easily have it navigate back onto the route in a sensible way and continue on the route as though no digestion had taken place. I keep being told to use MyRouteApp as its much easier but Basecamp is native to the BMW NAV 6 so I’d rather learn to use it properly.
    Thanks again. An excellent video and much appreciated👍👍

      Thanks for the feedback, it's great to hear. I was fortunate enough to be able to test it on two different Macs (one with an older version of Mac OS) and got the same result every time. It just crashed. I knew then that it wasn't down to the hardware or OS it was an issue with BaseCamp. Interestingly it doesn't happen on the PC version. Regardless the method of converting to a direct route first and adding via points is much better.

      Joseph Byrne exactly the same here, a late 2009 running High Sierra and a 2019 MacBook Pro running today’s flavour. I have so much to learn and I now have a very good source of reference. Thank you so much👍👍

    Excellent Tutorial Joseph - very much appreciated!
    You should geht a huge Bonus from GARMIN as they were never able (or willig?) to create something like this!
    What's funny, when I tried to create a Route from a track with activity Motorcycle it didn't crash, it simply didn't do the calculation! Maybe the track wasn't sufficiently complex to crash BC? The workaround of course works.

      Thanks for the feedback. I did approach Garmin at a trade show but they weren't interested.

    Hi Joseph I'm a new subscriber to your channel, which is great. Question: When following your guidance of creating a route from a track I ALWAYS get a straight line from start to finish. Unlike your example where your route mirrors your track. What am I doing wrong????

      Most likely you are using the global map which is not navigable. Plug in your device to pick up the City Navigator map. From there it should work. If it still doesn't, find my email in the about section of my channel and we can do a Skype meeting.

    Hello, very good video and well explained.
    One question with which you can maybe help. I have downloaded a GPX file and followed most of your steps. What I am missing is how to change the starting point of the route. In this specific example it is even passing before my door. But in other cases I want to add a small section to start from home and use my home as starting and ending point. Would be great if you can help me out here.

      On a Mac just use the hand tool and drag the start via point to your house, then do the same for the end point. If that changes the route too dramatically use the hand tool to insert some additional via points by clicking on the route, holding down the left mouse button and dragging to insert additional via points. I should cover all of this on the seminar tomorrow.

    Excellent video instructions. I’ve watched lots of Basecamp videos and yours is the best so far. Question. Seems in the past that once I turned the waypoints to not announce I had problems finding those on the Garmin when I’m out riding. For example if I wanted to move to the next point on a route it wouldn’t be there for me to select. So I’m hesitant to change the points to not announce. Have you had this problem?

      So they are harder to see on the map but they are still there. If you edit a route on the device it shows a list of all the via points. From there you can change them from alerting to non alerting or vice versa, move them or delete them. Have a look. You can contact me and we can look at it on a video call if you can't see where to do it. My email is in the about section of my channel.

    Hi and thanks for a great turtorial. I have One question. When fixing the creared route from a track (make the red similar to the green) you click and drag. That will not create any real waypoints? What if it recalculates in the navigator? Will those click and drag fixes be lost?

    • @JosephByrne
      @JosephByrne  2 роки тому

      It's not creating Waypoints it's creating via points on the route. If you look closely at 11:35 you'll see when I release the hand tool it creates a black dot on the route. That is an additional via point. If you double click the route to open the route details you'll see the new via point in the list of via points. If the via point is created on something that already exists in on the map such as an address or a point of interest, it will create an alerting via point. If it is created in an area where nothing currently exists it will create a non-alerting via point. When you transfer the route to the device all the via points are sent in order to make up the route. If you drive off the route and the device re-calculates (either automatically or manually) it will create a route based on the remaining via points in the list.

    Just to clarify if you do 8:21 of video choose recalculate it will not use the stored waypoints it will recalculate to final destination?

    • @JosephByrne
      @JosephByrne  4 роки тому

      If you create a route from a track and don't add any additional via points then the route structure consists of the start via point, the end via point and the Garmin route point extension data that is hidden. If you do anything that causes the route to recalculate, either manually or automatically then the route recalculates based on the via points in the list. It discards the Garmin route point extension data. So if the route only has 2 via points, the start point and the end point, if it recalculates then it creates a direct route to the end point. Any other data is discarded.

    Hi, I could not get your tip to work properly. I converted a track to a route and used 20 via points. When I recalculated the route using Direct, Basecamp did not add the additional Via points. Any suggestions?

    • @JosephByrne
      @JosephByrne  3 роки тому

      That's strange. So when you converted the track to a route using the direct profile did it not create a route with 20 via points at all? If it's still not working find my email address in the about section of my channel and we can setup a Skype meeting to look at it.

      @@JosephByrne Solved! When I created the route from the track, I had my preferences on fastest, and then recalculated the route using direct, that did not work. When I converted the track to a route with Direct as my preference during the conversion, that worked. Thanks for the tip! BTW, NER has put together another good source for learning Basecamp with excellent in-depth exercises. www.newenglandriders.org/learn-basecamp/
