Creating a GPS route for a motorcycle trip using BaseCamp

- In this video I explain how I create a GPS route for my motorcycle trips using Garmin’s BaseCamp. I have been doing it this way for quite a few years and has worked well for me.
Let me also mention there are probably other ways to go about it, but this works for me and its quick and simple. No right or wrong way.
Other things to note on how I use routes. When I am creating my routes I will at times break the trip up into different routes. Meaning, I might for a long trip create one route to get to a restaurant, then create another route from there to my destination. Then I will create a route home from that destination.
For gas stops I do not add a waypoint. When I need to stop for gas I will just pull in and the GPS will let me know I am off the route and will tell me how to get back on track when I leave. Same goes for for any other spur of the moment stops.
The waypoints referred in this video are technically “shaping points” because a waypoint really is a place you want to stop along the way. In BaseCamp though they refer to them as a waypoints. In the Harley infotainment system the GPS will alert me to each waypoint and tell me that I have reached my destination however I know that it was just a waypoint/shaping point.
Lastly if you have a waypoint selected on a road and say there is construction, and you have to follow a detour and you can not ride over that waypoint, the GPS will keep trying to route you to that waypoint. In the Harley infotainment GPS there is a way to skip that waypoint and continue on to the next one. And similarly, anytime you veer of the intended route the GPS will determine the route to the next waypoint.

Very good video. really clear. Thank you
glad that it helped you
Very informative, thank you. I'll come back with more comment once I try this on my system.
Entirely agree that after reviewing a dozen other videos yours was the first useful one. I can't understand why some of the other dudes will spend an hour scrolling through Basecamo or Zumo menus. Who needs that? Having said that why don't you get yourself a good bike like a BMW or a Honda? Okay joke, sorry, had to be said. Many thanks!
Great tutorial, got me started with Basecamp. Many thanks.
Great job Kevin. Straight to the point on how to create your own individual route made simple.
Excellent work Kev, been struggling with Basecamp for ages. You've broken it right down into bight size pieces. Thanks for taking the time to prepare an excellent presentation.
Nicely done Kevin. Thanks for taking the time of putting it together. Found it to be very informative. Ride safe
Thanks Bill !!
Nice job! thanks for doing this.
Lot of videos in base camp on UA-cam, yours was the most concise and clear I found, thx very much! Nice one! 👍🏻
Thank you , appreciate the feedback. Hope it is able to help you with your motorcycle trips.
WOW. I can't believe how clear and concise your instructions are. As a feeble geezer, I could never get a custom route set up. I ride on least traveled roads and like to plan my routes. I have been using Google maps and printing up routes on paper & taping to my tank bag in spite of having a Garmin GPS. Now I am FREE. I can set up my own personalized and quirky routes and listen through earbuds without taking my eyes off the road. ROADKILL, my 1981 Suzuki GS 850G, & I thank you from the bottom of our crankcases.
I am so happy that it was able to help you and allow you to enjoy your riding the route you wanted. Ride safe!!
Kevin, a great job with your video. I will recommend to my cycle buddies.
thanks Mike, I hope that it was helpful
Many thanks for this. Your video is clear, concise and accurate, in great contrast to the BaseCamp manual. It worked perfectly for me the first time.
glad that the video was able to help out.
Terrific video. Thank you very much for teaching this old dog some new tricks!
glad it was helpful. safe travels
Finally, a video that makes me realize that I might actually be able to figure this program out. Thank you very much for creating it. Good job!
Glad that it was able to help you. Once you get the basics down it really is not that difficult. Safe travels this year!!
Thank you Kevin. Very useful intro to Base Camp.
You are welcome Jonny!
Thank you .. very helpful video . the use of the - and + was a huge tip for me ...
thanks, appreciate the feedback.
Very helpful. Thanks for posting this.
glad it was able to help out.
Very helpful !!!.. and very easy to understand. Thank you for your help.
You are welcome Joe.
Brilliant Kevin, just been touring Spain on routes I worked out on Basecamp during the winter. But the minute I started each day Garmin rerouted immediately. I was also close to smashing up the £700 BMW Navigator VI on the roadside. Your answer about too big a gap in waypoints makes total sense.........you have saved my Garmin.
yes I had been there before myself and know the frustration when it starts to tell you to take a highway or another road that you had not planned. I am jealous...touring Spain sounds like a great trip!!
Nice work, thanks
Thanks. Great instructional video!
thanks and you are welcome!
nice one!!!
thanks James
Nice job. Very helpful to the new user.
thank you....be safe and good luck mapping out your ride
Thanks.
Thanks for getting me going in the right direction, ha see what I done there hahaha
nicely done Roger. 😀
Great video clearly explained. Can you show how to edit a route already saved so you can move or delete part of a route.. If you have already done this please point me in the right direction. Thanks
So you upload the GPX file to your Harley infotainment?
On a newer Nuvi, how do you access and use the routes created and transferred in Base Camp?
My BaseCamp maps and icons look different? I wonder if I have a newer version of the mapping software. Purchased a Garmin Zumo XT in 2021.
Basecamp software is awful. I struggled with it for years. I got so angry at my $700 Garmin I smashed it on the side of the road. I haven't regretted it once. Your tutorial looks easy and I made a long trip in that same fashion before destroying the GPS. The software said I created too many way-points and wouldn't allow me to save it.
I use the Harley Ride Planner with some success and disgust. Can you locate gas stations in the Basecamp application? Are they identifiable on the gui? If you use the ride planner and select a location (gas stop, hotel or food) it breaks the ride into segments. This treats your location stop as the end and you have to load the next segment. If you have a gas stop as part of your route but decide not to stop there you have to load the next segment as the ride planner treats locations as end of the route. So, can you depict restaurants and gas stations as separate items other than waypoints. I see that you are local... So am I.
Thank you Kevin please if you happen to select you route and it's the wrong way is deleting it only done by the undo button
you can use the undo button to remove a section of the route, from one way point to the previous one.
this is the most difficult mapping I've tried and still can not create a route give me google maps anytime easy to use and understand
How come your map looks so much better ? With my gps hooked up it still looks so generic.
I think when you connect your GPS, at the top if you click on Maps you can select your GPS. The maps on the screen should be more detailed.
One of the dumbest things about the software is that you can't export a GPX file and have it use that for the route that a trip follows. Would save so much time, but it doesn't appear to be possible, you have to create the trip and then either do like you're doing here and manually create it, or allow it to create the route and then drag things around.
I am not 100% positive but that this program might do that. There will be a small pop up window when starting out creating a route where it asks for the starting point and the ending point. I like the ability to decide the route from start to finish.
The real problem is when you start your route, the GPS recalculates another route that has nothing to do with what you've planned.
that can happen if you have the way points far apart. then the gps uses the settings you have for routing such as "fastest" or "scenic" , etc. But during this time it is still trying to get you to your next waypoint but yes it might not be the route you intended. Try dropping more waypoints.
May I also suggest that the settings in BaseCamp should match the settings on your GPS, regarding route preferences. (shortest distance/fastest time)
Mac version is so much worse than Windows and that isn't exactly modern software. Mac version lacks major route editing tools which make is unusable for me. Have to switch computers when route planning. Poor work, Garmin.
thanks. with a current garmin map to use the basecamp works well for me. Not sure about the windows version as I have not used it so not sure what I am missing .
