    If anyone from Garmin is watching this then I suggest you pay this man to create tutorials for your software and hardware customers as so far you don't seem to have bothered. I have a Garmin GPSMAP 66s that I am new to and there is very little information out there how to use the device and link it with the Basecamp software. This video pretty much showed me everything I need to create, file and organise the routes I create on the trail and when I am in front of my computer. Much appreciated Joby!!

    Good Morning Joe. For the life of me I can't seem to figure out why my XT isn't recognized by base camp. I'm using a '20 M1 MacBook running Big Sur. I've added a 128gb microSD expecting to see the card mounted after connecting via USB to the macbook. Not so.
    Lastly, I removed the card, reformatted it using Disk Utility (ExFAT), then moved a GPX file I exported from Rever Maps to the card. After inserting the card to the XT, I cannot see the new route added.
    Maybe it's the M1 or the formatting. As a last resort, I could ask my son to use his Windows machine to help me out, but it would be more ideal to resolve this one the M1 Mac.
    Thanks for the great videos. You're crushing it!

    • @JosephByrne
      @JosephByrne  3 роки тому

      That's unfortunate. It could be something as simple as trying another cable. Are you connecting directly to the Mac? The Garmin devices don't like port replicators. If you only have USBC ports you can buy converters that convert USBC directly to a normal USB socket. That could be worth a try either. I had an issue with my 660 once where the computer wouldn't recognize it when it has been connecting fine previously. I did everything including a full factory reset and nothing helped. Then I tried another cable and it connected first time. The old cable had broken. Since then I always try the cable first.

    Your tutorial is outstanding - thankful someone like you has done this for Mac. Question - I have an existing route to which I'd like to add some shaping points so in case I get off the route I can be guided back to the planned route rather than be guided to the ultimate destination. Only way I've found to do it is to add Waypoints and then make them non-alerting. Thinking there must be a better way with less steps but I'm stumped. Any suggestions?

    • @JosephByrne
      @JosephByrne  Рік тому

      Hey. You can just add more intermediate via points. They can be alerting or non alerting. Non alerting can be more useful as if you miss one it won't keep trying to take you back to it. With alerting you'd have to use the skip via function. Anyways it's very easy to do this on a Mac. Select the route then use the pan tool (the one that is a hand). Hover the pointer over the route where you want to add a via point. The hand will change to a pointing finger. When it does this hold down the left mouse button and drag to where you want the via point to be and it will insert it on the route.

    • @stevevaus9666
      @stevevaus9666 Рік тому

      @@JosephByrne I probably wasn't clear enough - I don't want to change anything about the route, (don't want to drag it anywhere) want to leave the route as drawn but simply insert an intermediate via-point. Using your method I can drag it off the route - and it changes the route - and if I drag it back to the original route it will give me a new VP but it seems like there should be a one-step option. AT least that's what I was hoping. For background, I'm working with a pre-designed coast to coast route (US) provided to me for the Scooter Cannonball Run this coming summer, but for peace of mind I want to add VPs all along the route just in case I get off the course.

    • @JosephByrne
      @JosephByrne  Рік тому

      @@stevevaus9666 I see. I'm trying to remember and I don't have my Mac setup at the moment. On PC there is an insert via point tool. With that you hover between two via points, it creates a dark line between them and then when you left click you can place a via point anywhere and it'll place it between the two via points on the route. You can place it on the route too. As I recall there isn't an insert via point tool on Mac you have to use the pan tool. So I think that's the best solution for now. Just drag and drop onto the route. I'll see if I can set my Mac up later and take a look.

    I have multiple GPS units and Basecamp seems to not know that all have the same current map and wants to load three copies of the same map to the computer. Worse yet, it names them all the same making it hard to know which map to select for which GPS. Have you seen this behavior? Any idea how to work around it so that only one copy of each map needs to be loaded to the computer?

    • @JosephByrne
      @JosephByrne  5 років тому

      I've not found a work around unfortunately. As each map is procured and purchased separately I think BaseCamp will always treat them as different even if they are the same.

    New question - I've discovered (painfully) that many (maybe all?) waypoint icons in BC don't transfer over to Zumo XT - they all get turned into orange flags. Is it me, or is this just another quirk of Basecamp and Zumo XT? Thanks

    • @JosephByrne
      @JosephByrne  Рік тому

      That's just the way it works. You can change the symbol on the device after you transfer it. I think it works this way because the symbol set isn't standard across all devices.

  • @colin7575

    Hi Joseph. I am stumbling at the first step. When I try to create a route it just draws a straight line across the map and keeps drawing until i click on another icon.

    • @JosephByrne
      @JosephByrne  3 роки тому

      Yes that's most likely because the activity profile is set to *direct.* Change it from direct to motorcycling or driving. If after you've done that it is still just drawing straight lines then the map you are using is not navigable. Plug in your device and select a map from the device under the maps menu. Then you should be all set.

I'm about ready to toss basecamp and xt into the pond.

      Sounds like you are still viewing the global map. If your map installed correctly it should be visible under the maps menu. If you can't find any maps other than the global map under the maps menu then perhaps it didn't install correctly. Connect your device to check, when you connect your device all the maps on the device should appear on the maps menu. Try installing the map to your computer again if it doesn't appear when the device is not connected.

    I have NO idfea how you will ever get a GPS unit to work on Basecamp in MAC, it is 100% impossible to do. There is no direct USB C to mini printer USB cable that works. Using a USB C adapter to USB A will make it work in Garmin Express which is good for ??? I have still no idea. But it will not show up in basecamp.
