Thank god you have came up on my UA-cam feed. Just recently bought the Zumo XT. Didn’t think it could be that complicated to make and follow a route. Lots of conflicting information about how to do it. Was just about to give up until I seen your vid. I’ve watched a few times and pieced it all tougher. Thanks my friend.

Spot on thanks, I've just spent last night learning how to do this with basecamp but this looks so much easier. Thanks for the vid. About the mount, I went back to the garmin own handlebar mount. It's better than center mount for a couple of reasons, your eyes don't have to travel as far from the road and it is way closer, only a few inches from your handle, so no reason to fiddle with other mounts, really.

Been doing this for years with garmin sat navs. The only tips I can offer is use my route app. I don’t use pc based software, I always use the app on my phone. It allows me to plan day by day on the fly. It has the option to use garmens here mapping software. That means there is no confusion in the route. They are exactly the same maps. That’s only issue I have had. Rides can get confused using Tom Tom, Google etc generated gpx files. The other thing is, remember to turn off auto re-route. If you take a wrong turn, it will bypass potentially large portions of your route. I always set mine to ask if I want to recalculate the route.
I also use Myrouteapp, brilliant software, they've recently lost the license to use Google maps but that doesn't bother me at all, I use the Michelin map, this goes hand in hand with my michelin paper maps that I use to plan my routes .. so they look exactly the same as what's on the screen .... brilliant 👏

I've been making routes on google maps, exporting that route as a kmz file onto the desk top, dropping that file onto my Garmin explore web page which automatically shunts it onto my XT as a track, I didn't know you could convert a track to a route within the xt it's self, I'll be looking at that in the morning, good video.
Brilliant Rich, got a zumo xt, been having the exact same problem, will be trying this, got a Scotland trip later in year with a calimoto route already sorted,
Well done and thanks for sharing. It's taking me awhile to learn how to drive mine and I can see I'm not on my own with trying to learn how to drive it.I also changed my mount to handlebars(I have a CB500X)nice and firm now, especially on my dirt road adventures here in Australia and also better position for touching screen.Did my research before I coughed up the big bucks for it,worth the money.A lot of my friends use phones, but I am often in areas with no reception so the Garmin better.Don't know if you ever use the back track function but I love it as when someone takes us on a ride, can then save to do again so easily.Cheers from down under.
Hi Richy I use the same method for sending routes to my XT Via my route app. I send the file as a gpx 1.1 When the XT receives the track and converts into a route it will show the start and finish waypoints/ shaping points/ and via points, it is essential to have the via points because if you need to divert off the route the sat NAV will make its own mind up to how it gets to the next waypoint (end of route) once in the device you can also change shaping points into via points and vice versa, plus with via points it will tell you how far to the next one for example coffee stop / view point. As a rule of thumb I divide the miles by 5 for shaping point, and then divide the shaping points by 10 or thereabouts to create the via points. 👍

Much appreciated richy ...I love the zumo xt and think its the best of both worlds when you can put the calimoto gpx files in ...thanks for taking the time out to show this
12:35 - Glad you had the same niggle with the height placement and eyeline view where the xt was previously on AT, as an avid viewer, personally, it was a little distracting. Just kept thinking that's gotta obstruct your view of the road with it being that high, let alone us viewers. But top marks for thinking about your viewers views, viewing your vids!
Thanks for the info Richy. I will give it ago using Google maps. I have my XT mounted on the handlebars of my Triumph Tiger 900 GT PRO. I've had a Garmin 550 for years till it died. Tried a Tom-tom but it was crap, so slow to operate. Love the XT. Keep up the great work, from Down Under.
Ciao Martin, I would like to know where did you connencted GARMIN , directly to the battery? I got the quite some bike about this topic, Rally PRO. Thanks a lot for your help. Fabio
Thanks for the tip and the idea. Just realized that Calimoto has GPX-Export now implemented in Android, which helps me a lot. According to Calimoto, iOS support for export is around the corner.
For non-Apple people - if you download the GPX onto your laptop or tablet then save it to Dropbox/OneDrive/Google Drive (or any cloud service) etc that syncs with your phone, it has the same effect as when the iPad syncs with the iPhone using iCloud!
Great tutorial before watching this I had the same questions funnily enough I also mounted the Zumo XT on my top handle bar clamp on my 1200 Rally Pro and it’s far better than high up ! It’s just much mass I also locked the XT in the Touratec mount very sturdy and safe 👍 I’ll be using your suggestion for route Planning Cheers Kev
I recently brought an AT and absolutely love it I have been off road on it already thanks to watching one of your videos I too am an XT user and yes had issues when I first purchased but like you generally always convert my routes And after watching your XT install video I didn’t like where you decided to originally install the XT as for me it ruined my line of vision as I’m a short arse so I went for a handle bar mount
I also have a tourtech lockable mount so I don’t have to remove the sat nav at every stop keep up the great work love watching your videos it encourages me to do more so a massive thanks
His 'trick' WAS to send a route to the Zumo as a track, from Kalimoto app (via Garmin Drive app) & have the Zumo convert it to a 'trip. But, he NOW uses MRA to send routes - he does NOT have a video of how...
IT CAN DO EVEN BETTER! :-) I use the same method as you to transfer the files to the XT, but let's say it is a route that you want to follow 100%. Like TET or something. After converting to a route, the Zumo will recalculate to the next waypoint if you happen to miss an exit. If that happens, you can miss out on parts of the trip that you wanted to enjoy. What I do in addition to what you have done, is to add the first, original track as a fixed layer on top of the map. It will then appear as a red (or whatever color you choose) line on the map that doesn't change regardless of where you drive. Now, if you open your route on top of that, like you have done, you will instantly see if the route Zumo made deviates from your original track! :-)
If you plan a route on a PC and then add it to your Garmin, you may find the Garmin changes some of the route. The trick is to set your Garmin to Off Road not Faster or Shortest and it will then follow the imported route as planned.Obviously if you plan a route directly on the device you have to set it to Faster or Shortest.
If you make a trip in Basecamp, it will go into the Zumo without having to convert it. And you can put waypoints in between, which is not possible with a track.
Great vid Richy, often wonder why manufacturers make instructions so confusing. Look how many vids are on YT with people explaining stuff in layman’s terms. Calimoto routing is so much better than Basecamp. I’ve a BMW Nav 6 which you can’t send routes to as you can on the XT but a few bits of the vid may point me in the right direction to using cali on my gps with a bit more ease. Oh yeah, currently waiting to go for breakfast at Hotel Infantado. 😁
I do it all on my iPhone, using Beeline app or Scenic app - i prefer the beeline one then i export to GPX and straight into the Garmin drive app then upload to my Garmin XT Sat Nav - that way i use very easily when actually on tour and i don’t need a PC
I use Route-app, save as tracks and convert on the device, no issues to date although I will say even with avoid motorways it has taken me down a motorway in France!
Very informative vid. I bought the XT about 2 months ago and it still sits in the box it came in because of the many confusing videos on how to use Basecamp, Garmin Express, Garmin Drive etc. Really contemplating selling it. My question is, when on a bit of a tour where you can’t use a PC, how do I make detailed route each day on the XT itself, without it changing the planned route? It must be possible because Noraly does it daily.
Forget basecamp... just use it's inbuilt planning on the Zumo itself and you can set it to adventurous route which is good... just not as good as a calimoto route. Thank's Richy for this... I was messing around trying to do something similar to that a year or so ago but have since pretty much just used Calimoto as it's so easy... I kept the Zumo as it has come in handy to have an offline GPS as well and it's POI database is really useful if needing to find stuff on the fly. I just didn't get the route conversion step sorted so will try that and hopefully it's all good. Does it allow to to add in other waypoints on the fly and or cope with re-routes Ok?
I put routes in my XT manually using Google earth Lat Long positions you get a much wider view on google earth than Basecamp as a lot of the minor roads only become visible when your nearly fully zoomed in.
Very informative video Richy. I wish I’d of known the convert track to trip but when I did my off road adventure through Portugal. Might of made navigation a little easier.
Calimoto on the PC is definitely handy for plotting a ride on but I just use my old iPhone XR to display it like you suggested on the bike with my 12 pro safely in my pocket from all vibrations 😁🏍💨
Yep, that’s what I do. Use my old iPhone 8 Plus on a Quadlock mount and my new 13 Pro in my pocket. Calimoto is great for creating routes on a PC or iPad, although the latest app update on the phone isn’t as good as the old version.
Firstly, love your channel Richy, top stuff 👍. Now, I may be wrong but I don't believe there's the need for the recalculation of a Track into a Route bit, if you just send the .gpx file in the 1.1 gpx 'Route' format to begin with. I've just upgraded to the XT for a recent 8 day trip to France, so quite a newbie with this model. So, watched a YT video for transferring routes first. Sent my pre-built routes from the MyRoute-app on phone, via Garmin Drive and they displayed immediately and correctly straight to the Trip Planner app on XT. If I'd added 'must drive through' waypoints, they displayed on XT screen, as I approached them, with text description, if added on WP. All worked perfectly, every day. So, as I say...I just don't get all this recalculating Tracks into Routes bit. Hope it helps. Paul.
@@RichyVida Recalculate was OFF. It appeared to pass all the WP’s I had originally inserted, even displaying in the ‘Up Ahead’ side bar with my WP comments, if you use that feature…but I may be completely wrong and deluded. Paul.
Wondered if the route recalculates if you encounter a road closure. Also wanted to ask if you ever use the relive app which shows exact route you have taken and plots the movement on a satellite map, I’ve started adding them to end of videos rather than route on Google map. I’ve taken photos of the old scooter in the exact position where you ended video
i use KURVIGER instead of CALIMOTO (as i'm an android phone user) but that point remains the same and that's why always use the phone instead it allows me to more easily skip a waypoint with the road closure or if I change my mind I'm not sure the same will happen when I use my ZUMO XT which i also own I love that unit because you can see it in the brightest song which is not the same with any cell phone ever made but it has limitations may have just found something here that will be helpful for many people as long as long as there are no road closures or changes to your route while riding fascinating find appreciate you sharing glad you didn't RUIN the unit with that VIBRATION it's expensive and they say it's "VIBRATION PROOF," but i really don't want to PERSONALLY find out if GARMIN is EXAGGERATING
Thanks for sharing. Awesome quality audio BTW; do you mind me asking what microphone you use? I assume it is plugged into the GoPro directly to be that good.
Hi richy if this way is even easier if some plans the route and emails to you press and hold the GPX file then share it straight to Garmin drive works the same but much quicker try it 👍👍🙏
The XT is pretty good, but it does take some faff, I will definitely try the Trip thing, I found, and I havent tried it for a while, that I had to delete and reinstall drive for each route I tried to send it. Im still working it out with OutdoorActive. Thanks dude.
🤔 that doesn’t sound right? Defo shouldn’t have to do that. Try MRA (My Route App) it’s amazing. Talks to the XT with perfect clarity. I don’t do this Cali thing anymore since buying that.
Great video. I've been using the Zumo XT the same way with importing maps created in Gaia GPS via the Garmin Drive app. What are you using for your in-helmet microphone, and is it integrated with your helmet communicator? Gimme a shout Beans, if ya need any help 👍
A true gent…thanks mate.
Finally there might be light at the end of the tunnel !!! My Zumo has driven me mad on many journeys, just doing it's own thing. Fingers crossed for a working solution to the navigation woes 🤞🏼. Thanks for sharing
Nice one Rich.. explained perfectly .. Im going to actually try this ... for once ha
Much appreciated richy ...I love the zumo xt and think its the best of both worlds when you can put the calimoto gpx files in ...thanks for taking the time out to show this
Good one and easy 👍 set up from your end. Thanks n safe riding.
Cheers Rich. Yeah, no problem with riders view just viewers view! Haha
Brilliant. Thanks for sharing that info , you’re ⭐️, GL
I have the same tour tech locking mount but mounted up high. t does vibrate a little for sure.
For non-Apple people - if you download the GPX onto your laptop or tablet then save it to Dropbox/OneDrive/Google Drive (or any cloud service) etc that syncs with your phone, it has the same effect as when the iPad syncs with the iPhone using iCloud!
Gave up on Garmin when the Zumo 550 was the dogs bits. Been Tomtom ever since.
Thanks for the tips on how too make a trip from Calimoto.
Great tutorial before watching this I had the same questions funnily enough I also mounted the Zumo XT on my top handle bar clamp on my 1200 Rally Pro and it’s far better than high up ! It’s just much mass I also locked the XT in the Touratec mount very sturdy and safe 👍 I’ll be using your suggestion for route Planning
Cheers Kev
I recently brought an AT and absolutely love it I have been off road on it already thanks to watching one of your videos
I too am an XT user and yes had issues when I first purchased but like you generally always convert my routes
And after watching your XT install video I didn’t like where you decided to originally install the XT as for me it ruined my line of vision as I’m a short arse so I went for a handle bar mount
I also have a tourtech lockable mount so I don’t have to remove the sat nav at every stop keep up the great work love watching your videos it encourages me to do more so a massive thanks
Thank you, Stephen 👍
I always to it ,that way as wel. thanks for the video
Thanks for that, I'll give it a go
Cheers for the Zumo tips been doing my head in
They defo don’t make it easy, so they?!
Exactly what i was looking for. thanks.
Check my updated version.. makes better sense and more accurate
What is the nature of the trick? Why isn't it in the title or description?
His 'trick' WAS to send a route to the Zumo as a track, from Kalimoto app (via Garmin Drive app) & have the Zumo convert it to a 'trip. But, he NOW uses MRA to send routes - he does NOT have a video of how...
Ah well done top man no more running in the field at the side of the road on the map! 👍
Helen says, why can’t we have a garage as tidy as Richys🤣🤣🤣🤣
I have always wanted to do what you just did! I may have to have a play! 😁
I figured a handlebar mount would work better. That is beautiful country your riding in. Be safe out there.
Brilliant, congrats! ✊🏻🧐😎
Nice bike
Grat advice! Thank you!
Very informative video, thanks!
Yes that’s exactly what I do. Always have the track showing underneath. That way, you can choose to - or not to - follow a diversion etc 👍
Are you referring to Usage Mode, found by clicking the motorcycle icon in the top bar?
If you make a trip in Basecamp, it will go into the Zumo without having to convert it. And you can put waypoints in between, which is not possible with a track.
But… Basecamp 😵💫
Thanks. Helpful.
Awesome, I'll have to see if this works similar on my Garmin 595LM
Excellent .. Thanks for sharing this, I shall try this, I like my XT but was getting irritated by the route transferring results ..
Yes me too. Beautiful unit but was making my life harder not easier!
Aah man! Mega! Hope you’re having a blast!
Just found your channel and subscribed. Belper lad, me. Now living in the (where's that?) county of Northamptonshire.
Cheers Ian 👍
Very informative vid. I bought the XT about 2 months ago and it still sits in the box it came in because of the many confusing videos on how to use Basecamp, Garmin Express, Garmin Drive etc. Really contemplating selling it. My question is, when on a bit of a tour where you can’t use a PC, how do I make detailed route each day on the XT itself, without it changing the planned route? It must be possible because Noraly does it daily.
You can plan directly on the device. Just making your waypoints as you would on the big screen. No problem
Used to have the same issue on my TomTom until I started TT added save as track option. Now my trips around the west of Ireland are as I planned
feel ya on the zumo mount, vibrate bit annoying, didn't get the Givi got the tourtech, but looks like you can't use tank bag now?
Yeah, it doesn’t fit now, but I’ve not used one since having the Pro Rearbag so it’s cool
Great video, very clear. Can you supply a link for the generic clamp you are using? I think this is a much better location for the satnav device
Agreed. It’s solid down there and not at all intrusive. It’s from Rugged Roads 👍
Might of made navigation a little easier.
top top , fantastic trick
Calimoto on the PC is definitely handy for plotting a ride on but I just use my old iPhone XR to display it like you suggested on the bike with my 12 pro safely in my pocket from all vibrations 😁🏍💨
Yes, defo don’t mount the 12! Mega easy with Cali online, isn’t it. Soon as you save it, it’s already on your phone 👍
Yep, that’s what I do. Use my old iPhone 8 Plus on a Quadlock mount and my new 13 Pro in my pocket. Calimoto is great for creating routes on a PC or iPad, although the latest app update on the phone isn’t as good as the old version.
You can also create your maps in Google Maps, export file and import into base camp then export to Zumo.Easy.Thks.
Great you lost me in garage 😆 don't do sat navs/computer tech does my head in 🤯🤣 but great roads of course 👍 take care stay safe 🏍 👍 🏍👍🏍👍
Africa twin has a lovely screen I wish more apps would work on it .. 🙏 .. keep safe bud
Agreed
Paul.
Hi Paul.
Thanks for that. Did the Zumo not calculate its own version of your own route? If not, I’ll defo check it out..
@@RichyVida Recalculate was OFF. It appeared to pass all the WP’s I had originally inserted, even displaying in the ‘Up Ahead’ side bar with my WP comments, if you use that feature…but I may be completely wrong and deluded. Paul.
Yarro are you seeing your planned route immediately on the Planner Application?
I see the bar mount but yours has a frame or holder ? Looks very slick. 🇨🇦🤘🏼
Yes, it’s from Rugged Roads. I’ve linked it in the vid description 👍
Another very informative video 🙏love your editing and your style always inspires me to do better keep up the good work top man 😎🤟
Great to hang out this weekend, mate! 🙌
Well done video...👍
Nice mount for the GPS. But looks like your front go pro is haveing a shaker party :)
Wondered if the route recalculates if you encounter a road closure. Also wanted to ask if you ever use the relive app which shows exact route you have taken and plots the movement on a satellite map, I’ve started adding them to end of videos rather than route on Google map. I’ve taken photos of the old scooter in the exact position where you ended video
i use KURVIGER instead of CALIMOTO (as i'm an android phone user)
but that point remains the same and that's why always use the phone instead
it allows me to more easily skip a waypoint with the road closure or if I change my mind
I'm not sure the same will happen when I use my ZUMO XT which i also own
I love that unit because you can see it in the brightest song which is not the same with any cell phone ever made
but it has limitations may have just found something here that will be helpful for many people as long
as long as there are no road closures or changes to your route while riding
fascinating find
appreciate you sharing
glad you didn't RUIN the unit with that VIBRATION
it's expensive and they say it's "VIBRATION PROOF," but i really don't want to PERSONALLY find out if GARMIN is EXAGGERATING
Hey Richy.....is there a final Picos video on the way?
You’ve already had it 👍
Thanks for sharing. Awesome quality audio BTW; do you mind me asking what microphone you use? I assume it is plugged into the GoPro directly to be that good.
Hi Campbell.
Yes, external mic plugged into the media mod of the GoPro. I use the Rode Lav Go 👍
Hi richy if this way is even easier if some plans the route and emails to you press and hold the GPX file then share it straight to Garmin drive works the same but much quicker try it 👍👍🙏
Of course it’d be easier for someone else to plan your route haha.. but yeah, press and hold then send.. job done 👍
Great video, so you did everything through your iPad / Keyboard combination ? I have the Zumo XT, fantastic device and support is great.
hi rich the rear bag you used in the off-road festival what's in called and were can I get one .loved your usa trip .thanks
It’s the Pro Rearbag from SW-Motech. There’s a link in my description to it 👍
@@RichyVida thanks Ritchie
I've been using the Purple Panda mic and have a Cardo PacTalk Black, but I have two microphones in my helmet, one for each of those two.
I have the Packtalk Edge, and yes, two mics. A Røde Lav Go for the filming and the Cardo mic for Edge. Not integrated.
Excellent
Holy shit. That's what I've been missing is to convert it to route 🤦. Thanks 🤜
