1993 Volvo 240 Restoration Part 2 - Water Pump, E-Fan, T Cam, etc!

  • I called this episode "Too Much To List" because I got a lot done on this car in September and October. The first thing I did was decide to make her mine with some stickers, then some much-needed maintenance on our 1993 Volvo 240 wagon: Electric fan swap, water pump, coolant flush, headrest cushions, window tint (20%/15% rear), Turbo camshaft and front engine selas. If you follow my instagram (@MrDavidBello) you'll know that all those seals are leaking. That is part of the reason I started driving Arthur, my 1967 Volvo 122s Amazon sedan, again. Also, putting E-codes on my 1993 Volvo 240 wagon made a world of difference.
    Tune in next time, where our alternator and belts all break!

    I am a Volvo fanatic! I own a 1990 240 DL. I love your wagon. Idk what happened to the passenger window at 4:20 but I have a little story. I was restoring my car. Used invisible glass to clean the windows. It was hot that day so I went to the store to get a beer. I had my windows down, just cruising along. I said... " damn that beer was good, think I'll get me another one." Stopped and got another. Continued along on a side road. Looked out my passenger side.... Looked around...., didn't see anyone so I decided to throw the empty bottle out the passenger window. Well when I did, the passenger window shattered all to hell. I did not have the passenger window down all along. Invisible glass will clean glass. Cost $83 to replace it.. Love your car!

      Well my story was just a brick through the window to steal my backpack full of homework and school supplies. Lesson learned about leaving bags in sight, and now one on throwing bottles in the car haha

      +That dutch guy I love the 240s.
      Both of mine met unfortunate ends though. The '86 was a rusty when I bought it and just kept getting worse. It had at least 301,000 m/485,000 km on it though and still ran and drove great. The '89 was a super-nice western rust-free car that got smashed by a snowplow while it was parked :( Totaled, but also ran and drove great even after being crushed by a plow, lol.
      I need to buy another one.

      +andxx0r_the_second R.I.P.,I know you'll find a good one. 2-3 nice, affordable wagons pass through craigslist every year, locally.

      +andxx0r_the_second What a bummer about those 240's. I just wanted to mention that I use to have a lot of problems with rust on old cars until I found a kind of paint that you can put on directly over the rust and it stops the rust for years. Its made all the difference for me when it comes to restoring old cars. Its called POR15 (I have no affiliation with that company btw). It cost about $40 per qt, but its the only thing I found that actually works. cheers

    • @DavidBello
      @DavidBello  8 років тому

      Yeah I know POR15. It's a great product, even though the title is misleading and they don't want you to actually paint over rust before treating it, even though it will work

    This is gold...can’t wait to see the rest of the series. Just got my 92 DL wagon recently. It’s in somewhat better shape than yours (respectfully) But it’s a 240 and needs all the usual 240 stuff. This really helpful stuff for newbie like me.

    My dad had a '93 Volvo 940 Turbo wagon when I was growing up...I've been a Subaru guy for a long time, but I would really like to own an older Volvo wagon (pre Ford ownership) some day. Great vids, very informative!

      +LoveMyZJ Thanks for watching! I love all Subaru products. They come in at a close second to Volvo. We just bought our first Microcar 360. And my girlfriend has a reliable Forester we use on camping trips and random excursions. These wagons are great, if taken care of. Much cheaper than other european models.

    Very interesting. My 90, named Arthur, is soon due for his 600,000 km service. Wish I could do it myself, but no garage means rolling around in a foot of snow. No thanks. Guess the shop will earn some money.

    Great channel. You know I got an '89 Volvo 245 DL auto wagon from a salvage auction. It was pretty immaculately preserved and just donated to charity. I recently replaced its alternator due to failing to charge, that problem solved. I think the water pump might be leaking. What is the common failure with that? Is there anyway for me to tell for sure before delving into that big job or should I not even try and have a mechanic? I'm not super mechanically skilled, but I think I'm less likely to mess something up than a careless and rushed mechanic, something I don't want to do considering how well this car has been preserved through its 30 year existence.

    • @michaeltutty1540
      @michaeltutty1540 3 роки тому

      There are tricks you need to know for installing the water pump on a Red Block so it doesn't leak. You have to lever it up to seat the O Ring before it is tightened. That is one of them. Not sure if there are others. I need to get the Bentley manual, as the Haynes is fairly useless for the little details.

    I have a 1987 Volvo 245, and considering that much of this video includes cooling-related topics, I thought I'd see if anyone had any advice for mine. I've replaced the thermostat, water pump, and have done a complete coolant flush and have checked on both the fans and radiator, but the gauge still randomly shows that the car overheats. It could be after 30 minutes of driving or after just a minute or two. It doesn't matter if it's highway driving or city driving or idling; it's just random. I was suspecting the gauge sensor, but I thought I'd check with the Volvo world for ideas. Thanks!

    When pulling out and chaning the cam, is there a pattern you need to loosen the cam? Heard that you can bend it. And is there a pattern for putting it together also?

    • @DavidBello
      @DavidBello  7 років тому

      Halvar I'm sure there is, but I only pull them when cold, so they don't lose their shape. I start by loosening the middle cam cap, then one back, one front, last back one by firewall and forward most, in small steps in the sequence. I tighten on small steps as well, middle-out as with removal. haven't had problems. even the shim gap was good.

    ive asked you about other things before, when you replaced the water pump (mines leaking from the seal too) did you have to take the timing belt off or just the cover? and is it easy taking the fan assembly out or should I just try to replace thr pump without removing it? get back to me whenever you can, thanks.

    Hi David, I want to swap out my camshaft on my 1989 240 dl wagon, with another camshaft that i picked up at a pick-n-parts. its only label is an "A" which looks more like a triangle than a letter. Is this an "A" cam? Would you recommend swapping it out with "M" cam that's in the engine?
    Thanks!
