    Hope IPD keeps providing parts for the 240, and other vintage Volvo’s. Been driving, either a 145, 745, or presently a 244 since I was in high-school. I intend to keep my current 91’ 244 for the rest of my life, God willing, of course. It’s in absurdly good condition for it’s age, and having brought it up from my other home in the south to upstate NY and avoiding driving it in the winter whenever possible, it’s hilarious about all the attention it gets for not being a total rust bucket considering it’s age.

    I bought a 244 as my first car. I had all those issues except #10
    I ended up doing 300.000 additional km in a car i bought with 120.000 km in the clock.
    Best car ever.

    I love my '84 240 dl...I get almost daily compliments from all ages and walks of life. It's amazing how much people like this car.
    Only thing is, it never starts on the first try But ALWAYS starts on the second. lol. Also just developed vibration in the steering wheel. Checking out the steering /brakes today.

    Thanks guys. Just picked up another Volvo. '86 245. Your website is the best. I think the Wiring is the main issue and should be the no. 1 problem. From the firewall to the rest of the motor its crumbled.

    Funny. I've owned a 244 for a couple years and I recognize almost all of those parts as ones I've had to replace. I think I may need to replace that pump and my seat grid soon.

  • @Buldingstuff
    @Buldingstuff 10 місяців тому +1

    The tank pump is easy to diagnoise, simply jump power in the fuze box numer 6 to the right side of number 4 fuze and listen for pump. Or you can jump the fuze relay.

    I had no idea you guys existed until now. Here in Australia we have a sort of 'cottage' industry with our '80's ovlovs. Always wanted to 4wd an 82 245.

    Flame trap and air intakes, on both 1986 240's I own. Other fun thing was the brake light board had slight rust and the light wouldn't work, apparently common.

    That the 240 does not have relay on the light switch is also a common issue.
    My switch melted... So I fitted relays... Now the light is stronger and no heat inside the switch!

  • @epiglottisdynasty
    @epiglottisdynasty 7 років тому +4

    Pretty much spot on, I've had to do all 10 of these. The reason the light module tends to fail, from my experience, is shorts in the degrading wiring harnesses of the '80-'87 models. Find the short or you may fry the replacement too. The other things I think are pretty common are MAF sensors and bushings, most of which are easy to do, but the rear trailing rod ones need a special tool that is near impossible to find. And of course, the main wiring harness on the '80-'87s, but if the car is running, that has almost certainly been done already because they'd all just be a bundle of bare wires by now.

  • @VilleVallaton76
    @VilleVallaton76 7 років тому +16

    That auxiliary fuel pump actually keeps the high pressure fuel pump not to fail prematurely. In case one or the other fails, change both, the main pump is probably already damaged if the auxiliary pump fails. They are both inexpensive.

    On number 8 fuel relay. the most common problem with that, is soldering issues in the circuitboard inside. Pry the case of, carfully with a small screwdriver or similar, and soldering the connections thar are lose och is bad, you may need a strong lookingglas to examen the solderings . Saves money :)..

    I live in sweden and i drive my red 244 from-76 to work everyday. with it being a car with a b21engine with a mechanical fuel pump and carburator i dont get most of those electrical issues, although i have changed the heating fan since it made the sound of a fighter-jet

    I owned a '91 240 until 2004 and had 286K miles on it. I'm surprised that these did not come up: I had to replace the kick-down cable twice at about 130K each. If you rotated a small wheel on the upper right of the engine, the cable springing mechanism would stick and not take up the slack, causing problems with shifting. Problem was, the transmission had to be dropped to replace it, and it ended up costing around $400 each time. The other issue is that I would have to replace the radio antenna about every 3 or 4 years. I think it wore due to constant road vibrations. Finally, in about 2002, Volvo parts came out with a solid, non-telescoping antenna, which I believe would have fixed this issue. I had the control to switch the air to recirculate break, but never bothered to fix it, since it was not set to recirculate which would have created interior window fogging problems, and it was hard to get to and would have costed a full day's labor. I also didn't bother to fix my broken cruise control. I don't think that I ever had one the issues that they mentioned.

  • @copuis
    @copuis 7 років тому +8

    indeed the motor mount was an issue to some degree, i mean jumping them would kill them
    i do think some of the "issues" are less volvo issue tho, and more age issues that all cars suffer, like plastic inlet piping etc
    also, it seems that the bulk is on the later model car, ie electronic injection, which again, would be the same as any other major/bulk make car of the same age

    I drive a 1985 240GL Volvo. I had just changed the tank fuel filter and the damaged fuel relay switch as well as the fuel pump under the car. It drove beautifully and then I took sharp corner and it stalled on me and won't restart anymore. My mechanic tells me it's the fuel distributor but before I pony up cash for the crazy pricey part, i would like to ask if it could be something else?

    After searching the web for more than an hour and the Haynes manual has proven itself useless, I have come to the conclusion that Volvo 240s don't have an Oil Pressure Sending Unit. But how does the dash light go on and off?

    almost all the same errors have the 700 series plus errors that may be caused by small driving is labda sensor is full of unburned fuel and exhaust. they can often just take out and let stand over night in gasoline or brake cleaner and brush clean and use compressed air and clean ones and put back in and they work just fine again as I did with my 740 ...

  •  3 роки тому

    #10 the main fuel system fuse. In 22 years I have never found a bad fuse here, only bad fuse holders. They corrode and cause problems. Replace that thing today.
    The crankcase breather is a problem, but like many Volvo systems. it was over designed.
    I remove the 'Flame Trap' filter from every Volvo I service. It is supposed to stop something that just wont happen. It wants to stop a flame getting past excellent valves, along much intake hose, to catch oil vapors on fire. It has to be a REALLY poor running 240 for that to happen. But a plugged flame trap causes trouble.
    Just remove it.
