We were lied to! This car had an NA B230F engine that had some cheapo rubber hoses for the oil feed and return lines (Obamafeed), with a welded bung on the oil pan. Very poorly made, and a couple of years of abuse meant it started to fail and cause excessive blow-by.
Could we have just found and repaired our engine's problems, either head gasket, rings or valves? Maybe, but that oil pan bung was so poorly done, that we would have to pull the whole engine anyway. Ergo, B230FT SWAP!

From Sweden here and I like this channel keep going. And 240 rules man ;-)
You guys are cracking me up with the Nacho Libre references. This is a very informative video! Thanks guys!
Just got a volvo 240. This channel is super helpful. Love it.
Great content as always.
Great series!
def good vibes coming from this man
This is exactly what I need to do for my 242. Thanks for this video inspiration
Julia D same for my 242.
finaly a video with real substance
Whoaaaaa there, petty officer!!!!! Great video. I too use my old coveralls for dirty work.
Holy moly! You kind of have to hand it to the lunatic that strapped that turbo on. That's an ambitious project!
Ever come across factory volvo 240 fog lights?. Looking for a set for my 90 240DL wagon 5 speed.Love the videos @David Bello
7:12 Hey David, I have that same emissions crap, could you explain to me how it works (or link)? and how do I get rid of it ;)
David, I envy your sick car collection
I found a 240 DL 1987 for sale for 400 dollars... I want it so bad but our Homeowners Assn won’t let us keep projects in the driveway
What wheels do you have on her and where did you get them? Nice!
Where are those rims from? They compliment the car so well
Those rims are soo good looking
The Classic Crime tshirt, nice! I went to high school with Matt and his brothers
Erik Grimsmo no way! I’ve been listening from the very start! Huge part of my formative years.
Says the AC fastening is overdone, has rattling bolts on it, I think you can thank the six extra bolts your AC isn't scraping across the pavement with the car
I have to ask: what was your rate in the Navy?
david just found your channel, love the content and commentary, a stable camera would be a good idea. definitely sub'd though
Mr Ed Thanks for the feedback, Mr Ed! and thanks for watching.
Mystery wire is for the cold start injector, I believe. All of the US 240s have that thing dangling afaik.
Cwazywazy1240 awesome, thanks!
Are you guys in Burbank? I’m in Pasadena. I have a 69 Mercedes, it’s beautiful but it gets boring. I want to get a Volvo in a week or so. Still searching. Can I get some help from y’all?
El placer de reconstruir un VOLVO 240 244 264GLE

I'm subbing to see more of the adorable kitty XD
I love this channel more than milk and Oreos.
Ae86 Hachi even blue milk?
David Bello By leaps and bounds!
I have milk and Oreo"s and watch these great Volvo videos. My daughter has a 1987 240 with 300,000 miles and still going strong with just regular maintenance.
Subscribed just for the awesome.singing
Wait so the b230ft has rings specifically adjusted for a turbo? What is the difference between an b230f and an b230ft?
megaman mooshrom b230f has higher compression ratio. so 15psi , which increases pressure exponentially with each compression stroke, so the weakest link takes the break
+megaman mooshrom Some n/a engines, when you add a turbo, burn out the piston crowns. I built a Volvo 760 estate with a twin-turbo Rover V8, it started out as a low-compression Land Rover engine but I kept the boost pressure low to ensure reliability and it was good as gold. The person I sold it to decided to turn the boost pressure up to take it down the 1/4 mile and ended up melting 3 piston crowns. The other 5 pistons were all damaged too. If I hadn't started out with a brand new ex-military surplus engine the rings might have gone first but it still wouldn't have done the pistons any good...
Sounds more like he detonated the crap out of it, melting the crowns. B230FT vs B230f, the only difference is that the T has lower compression pistons and sodium filled exhaust valves. That's it. I'm running a 93 B230F engine with a T3 turbo and at 12PSI I get no detonation and it pulls hard.
Hey David where do you keep getting all these Volvo 240's man??? I really want one.
Luis Orozco I have many Craigslist and no monies.
Lives in New Mexico, and has a Pontiac Aztec out the front... :/
hmm...
hahahahahaah love the singing
Curious, how much did that engine cost?
VölvöN junkyard's fees added up to about $350. new hoses and seals extra.
Volvo 240 Turbo 1984❤️❤️❤️👍👍👍🤠
que lugar legal hem ..
Ent
Why not put the Volvo straight six with a massive turbo in?
ACE MEDIA that would be fun, but take more time than we have to get this back on the road.
the stright six is a shit engine
I'd probably use an M50 :)
pra quem curte peças de volvo
Damn, it looked like that plane was planning an unscheduled stop-over in the junk yard...
Nice! Taking a break from working on Bruce?
Noah Sanchez he's at paint so my end is slow for a while
Indian accent on point

Niceee. And oh, first
megaman mooshrom congrats!
David I just saw The Smoking Tire Matt Farah drives a 400 hp Volvo Amazon thought you like to know laters
You have a very sweell deadpool voice
the b230f are pretty neat with turbo and e85 tho :D makes more then decent hp if you look att savarturbo.se and this www.swedishracingmotors.com/b230-8v.html sure its in swedish but still haha
Your so fucking weird, I love it subbing
I wonder what was the former owner thinking, to damage a 240 Turbo, and has the nerve to ask a hefty.amount of money after he damaged the Turbo engine what 🤪🤪🤪
You might be OK with that salvaged engine, automatic transmissions on RWD Volvos don't seem to be as strong as the rest of the cars, and while they don't usually cost a whole lot to fix when they develop issues (the basic transmission has been around since before Pontius was a pilot) a lot of owners either aren't aware or, because it's an old car and end up junking an otherwise sound car that, with a few hundred bucks spent on sorting the transmission, would probably go one for another few hundred thousand miles. Of course it doesn't help that a lot of people, when the car gets older, try to "save money" by missing out on changing the transmission fluid and filter at the recommended intervals. Interestingly, it seems these transmissions are a lot stronger after they've been gone through by a good automatic transmission specialist, I guess the replacement parts they usually need are a bit beefier than the original parts used...
+mr42ndstblvd It probably would have been faster after having the trans done, more of the power would have been getting to the wheels rather than being lost to slipping clutches and heating up the transmission fluid...
+mr42ndstblvd It could be that the previous owner had the transmission upgraded, if they were a petrol head too. The bill should list the work that was done and what parts they used so it should be possible to identify if they were stock parts or upgraded by doing a bit of internet searching on the part numbers. Volvo engines are pretty good in standard form, but they're much more set up to produce torque rather than power as they're big, heavy cars that usually work for a living, especially estates/wagons. You can certainly get decent power out of them without going for a turbo, if you know what you're doing and you have access to engineering equipment. I know someone who built a 250bhp 2.3 litre n/a injection engine for his 740 workshop hauler just to prove it could be done, he said he could have got more out of it but he didn't want to totally kill the torque and make it useless on the road, though he did end up putting a standard, rebuilt engine back in it...
You sound more like a Indian. cheers Adam
dude! I was there ha ha at u pull it I couldn't tell if it was you till I saw your IG post ha ha I was like shit I should have said what's up I'm Jose with the white 240 (rip) I picked up a pretty clean 85 244 for 300 bucks hopefully I can run into you soon so you can check it out!
by the way did you find the 140?
+Undecided Garage RIP? Did it meet an untimely end? Definitely say hi!
+Undecided Garage the red wagon? Yup, I pulled the head off it. A shame to see it rotting away :(
yeah man unfortunately it did it was to far gone for me to even try to get at a start on it I did somethings but it had atleast 500k and I found the 85 244 in waaaayyyy better condition so I tore the wagon apart and got the good parts and scraped it maid my money back lol
do you happen to know if you can buy cars from there? I would definitely buy it it looks halfway decent going to go look at it here in about 20mins lol
Hey dude! Great car, I'm a huge Volvo fan too. Join my group 'I Spotted A Volvo' on FB! Great video and loving the Arrakis rims on it 👍🏼👍🏼😎
holy canoli, does that guys 240 have a tach? I would send him a few bucks for it if he's gonna scrap it.
jim miles we're not sure what's going to happen to it.
jim miles Got my tach at the JY, plus 52mm clock and bezel thrown in too for just $20. Then went to another junkyard closer to me and there was another 240 with a tach. I tell you, they're out there, you just gotta dig.
Sadly I'm in NY. Which means a couple of things. 1. All 240s with a tach are long rusted away. 2. We are not allowed to go into the JYs here.
jim miles I feel your pain. I'm from rural Western MA. But who doesn't let people into their junkyard?? That would drive me nuts, sorry you have to deal with that.
Nacho libre
damn, im sad after seeing these dead volvos, i mean... i am a car person that sees cars as personalities, so i get sad after seing dead cars knowing there are less and less of them every day :(. Like if u agree
Ikr..
you will be so pissed at me when you read this. c30 t5 under 80 thousand miles. 300+hp and six speed man. hydroplaned into utility pole at speed limit. now you understand how pissed i am. happened a week after you posted this video
Joe Mueller dooooooood. what do you want to do with it now? glad you're alive
trading it for an awd grocery getter i6 xc90. thanks for the support. still devastated.
all i have to say is volvo saved another loser. the utility pole almost reached my windshield, and all i have are seat belt bruises.
lol 😂 complaining about all the signs in Spanish. I thought you spoke Spanglish living in Albuquerque lol ! My high school friend last name was Bello he was from Bogota
7:35 was ist das hahaha
If you need a new engine in your old volvo then you shouldve put a more powerful, better engine instead of putting the same 2.3 liter 4 cylinder :/. How about a ls 8 cylinder?
Loving the Indian accent A+ and radiator fluid for cats :).
Godspeed why? When you can have unkillable b230?
Ha. Put that thing under a moderate amount of boost, have a random lean spike due to Bosch L.H. 2.4 90's fuel injection system. Boom! Rods+pistons comes flying out of the hood and onto the pavement. Don't get me wrong, I love my heavily modified 90 760 Turbo B230FT but it has no power without boost and I just would rather have an engine with a bit more potential. Plus these volvos are far from reliable because of the biodegradable wiring harness that can not take the heat of a turbo car. It has left me stranded 1000s of times until I traced the fault to the radio suppression relay. These cars after time will get mysterious electrical problems that make them seem possessed. Simply these engines are not worth the effort. Pretty terrible-average gas mileage too @ 13-19MPG in the city. It will be worse too if you use boost a lot. I mean if David Bello is going to go through the effort of sourcing an engine, I don't see why he wouldn't go a little bigger and put a beast into the volvo.
