    My daily driver is an '89 245 wagon with the m47 5 speed. It has 340 thousand on odometer, and yes the odometer is still working. The maroon paint is peeling and fading. The drivers seat is about shot, but the 'ol girl just keeps going.

    Great video! I recently restored my 1992 volvo 740 turbo wagon. Spent 4K on parts alone... did all the work myself, however the car screams. Dusted a new 2018 Range Roll Over Velar off the start... he started it, I just finished it!

    Looking good. I just picked up a similar 89. White, automatic, blue vinyl interior w the usual thing where the odo stops at 200ish k. $300. Getting her back today w about $700 in work in her. Can't wait to drive her!

    Love these wagons. Can't wait to see the whole series. The transmission not going into park is likely the mounts. Mine gave me difficulty when all 3 mounts were broken. New mounts took care of it. With a good auxiliary transmission cooler, these Aisan-Warner AW71s last. Mine is at 400,000 miles and works like new. The only thing with yours that could be better is if it were a Classic, but can't have everything for $1,500.

    the first thing you should do when you get one of these works of art is grease the drive shaft bearing and get rid of any aluminum fuses and put the oem ones in; bronze, copper etc., check the battery ground where it bolts to the engine, change the flame trap, eventually you would wnt to put a tachometer (it's interchangeable with the stupid big clock, red and white wire) in.

    My odometer stopped at 412K km. That was 4 years ago. It must be over 600 by now. It's only left me stranded once. The original 92 starter finally went. It's my second 240. My fist one, The body rusted out so I scrapped it with 500K. The engine was still good and reliable to the end

    Hey just an FYI with Armor All on your dash is it creates a green house effect bouncing sun rays and heating up the plastic and storing the heat for longer causing more cracking. Also the residue that it leaves collects dust quickly, and can cause your dash to blind you if the sun hits it the right way. Anyway looking good with your new project just thought i'd leave my 2 cents. As a Detailer I tend to wipe the dash down with a microfiber and leave a clean mat surface.

    • @DavidBello
      @DavidBello  8 років тому

      +Glen Johnson Thanks for the info! I like the shine, and there wasn't much dust. I also use a sun shade when I'm not driving so it doesn't crack more.

    I bought my 92 245 back in March and it had a overheating problem at a stop as well. I ordered a new radiator, fan clutch, water pump and t-stat and replaced them when I did the timing belt, seals and other stuff as well. As I was doing the install, I pulled the grill off to check and see if any crud was blocking the flow. To my surprise, I found a electric fan in front which had a bad ground. Not sure if it was the cause of my overheating but I fixed the ground and replaced the parts I already ordered and I have yet to overheat or come close.
    Moral of the the story, check to see if you have a e-fan in front of the grill that isn't working. I have had older 240s in the past that didn't have one but the 92 did.

    My first Volvo (and second car) was an '86 240 wagon I bought for $600. I really miss that old barge. It started really rusting apart badly at about 300k indicated miles. Actual was much higher due to 3 (known, anyway) odometer gear failures.

      you bring up a good point. when I was under the car changing the filter, I replaced the shifter bushings and it was able to go into park. neutral should be just fine, if your back wheels are properly chocked.

    What is the solution to the odometer problem? I recently lost my 92 240 sedan due to some flash flooding. Just prior the odometer went out and the cost for the part was mind blowing. Looking at getting another 240, specifically looking at a very similar wagon to this one, which also has an odometer problem. It seems this happens a lot when they get to be this age. Is this state it is a requirement that it be working, as part of the safety inspection required for registration. Don't want to move forward without knowing if there is a way to handle it.

    You know bunches of stuff. I have an 84.5 245 turbo. My transmission sometimes slips in and out of gear, reverse and drive and it is very brief, like it's "catching" the gear. It shifts smoothly. Oh, it's an automatic. Any suggestions?

      easiest thing to check for is low fluid level in the automatic. make sure it is topped off. or you have a failing valve body/worn clutch packs.
      I can't guess which song you're asking about.

  • @gosportjamie
    @gosportjamie 8 років тому

    Just a couple of things. Firstly Cibie is a French brand pronounced "CBA". Secondly you need to get your wheel alignment done, those front tyres are badly worn on the inside shoulders indicating far too much toe-in which will kill your fuel consumption. It's nice to see younger people taking to these flying bricks, they're actually really good fun to drive. Incidentally, the later 240s from about 1990 on seem to be worse for rust than the earlier ones so giving yours a good dose of anti-rust wax, especially between the rear window and licence plate box on the tailgate if it's good there would be a very good idea to save yourself welding-type headaches later...

    • @DavidBello
      @DavidBello  8 років тому

      Thanks for the tips. I won't be aligning tyres until I get new ones put on. The cables started showing so I am upgrading wheels to hydra style as well.

    • @gosportjamie
      @gosportjamie 8 років тому

      David Bello Good call, your 240 should look great on them, and feel tighter too. All rear-wheel drive Volvos seem to benefit from wider alloys and tyres, it's like the steel wheels just weren't wide enough to take the tyres the car needed. My old V8 turbo 760 estate had T5-R alloys on it and felt great on them...

      +David Bello I'll keep an eye out for it. Do you think the automatic transmission flush improved the transmissions performance? I don't know when it was done last and I don't want to risk flushing the fluid "holding" it all together.

    • @DavidBello
      @DavidBello  8 років тому

      The AW70 and AW71 is nicknamed "crushing disappointment" here. It helped reliability, I'm sure, but negligible performance difference. % speed swaps are always better here.

      Hej! I just wanted to ask, that which pages are best for looking for a bargain old Volvo in Sweden? I've looked on Blocket, but they were not as cheap there as I imagined, although a lot of nice project cars :) Thanks in advance!

      because its gay!!!.... no im just kidding, well you know you have more control with a manual transmission, it feels much better if you like to accually control the car to 100%

      Hmmmm. I think. its more practical, efficient, less weight, low cost repair, durable, you have the control of gears, andofcourse, you feel more you actually driving your car,

      Stick is more fun for driving the car... Automatic is more fun if you live in a city that has traffic.

    If I could have heard what the guy was saying over the banal background muzak, or seen what he was doing over the jerky filming, or could live with the constant interruptions of the adverts, this might have been worth watching. As it was...I gave up after a couple of minutes.

      Harriet Havard yesh youtube ads have gotten so much more prevalent in last few months, now interrupting every few minutes regardless of channel. My editing methods, however have, changed dramatically in the 4-5 years since making this. I encourage you to check out the more recent vids 😎
