Are DVDs and Blu-Rays Dead? : Movies and Physical Media

- In this video I examine a question that usually brings about much debate. Is physical media really dead? Are we living in an era that is strictly interested in streaming? I explore these themes in this video.
Certainly, many folks like me who grew up in the 70s and 80s are very used to physical media. If you are like me, not only do you enjoy watching movies, but you also enjoy collecting them. I take great pride in my collection of blu-rays and dvds.
But more and more people are moving away from this mentality. Many people today could not be bothered with physical media. They are very content to just consume movies on streaming sites.
As I mention in this video, I can't imagine NOT owning a movie that I am very passionate about. I want to know that I can watch it any time I want to. With streaming sites, you just don't know when your favorite film will be taken down.
I discuss much of this in the video. I look at the technical benefits of DVDs, as well as comparing the cost of physical media to streaming.
Some people feel that blu-rays and dvds have had their day. They are nothing more than a relic from the past. But I strongly feel they still have their advantages, which I look at in this video.
What do you think? Do you think DVDs are dead? Do you still collect DVDs? Or are you strictly happy with streaming only? Do you have a big DVD collection? Let us know what you think!
On this channel I post videos relating to retro and vintage technology. Things like cassettes, CDs, old cameras, laser disc, radios, TVs, DVDs, home recording gear, Radio Shack, microphones, mixers, synthesizers, drum machines, video games, and so much more. If this is your thing, please subscribe!
DVDs and Blu-rays are my preferred way to consume media. You can resell them, you can trade them, you can pass them around, they are great.
I forgot to mention. Most importantly the right to watch DVDS and Blu-rays cannot be revoked.
mabye just upload them to a flash drive flahs drives last way longer than a blu ray disc and can't scratch themselves
But physical media is getting old
@@angelaparente4470 I also like antiques What of it. 😁
@@angelaparente4470 Old but gold as they say, and Newer isn't always better. I'll prefer to actually own my things, that get some silly streaming service, where my "purchases" can get revoked at any point.
The problem is there's so many streaming sites, you need numerous subscriptions (that increase in cost annually) and odds are what you want to watch is either not on a subscription, not on your subscription or takes ages to scroll through to find amongst the rubbish you aren't interested in (that's also now riddled with advertising). Also it's common for a series to be taken down from a subscription before you complete it. Meanwhile a DVD collection is unique to you and organised in one place. New Year's resolution. Cancel subscriptions.
I would spend entire days watching dvd extras and playing the little games in them. I spent a sick day going through all the extras on The Incredibles set with all the special features. I still remember that because it was a fun day and it launched my interest in Jazz and James Bond.
I’d say they were on there way out, until recently where Discovery and Sony started to remove content people thought they owned. Now we are seeing a resurgence in Piracy. Well done Sony.
This is the problem I have with digital. These companies exert so much control over what you "own" to where you're just throwing money out the window. Might as well just sign up for a streaming plan instead since it will be gone at some point anyway.
Physical media is here to stay it might be a bit slow right now, but it'll pick up.
I used to collect VHS then went over to DVD and now new releases on Blu ray. I totally get what you are saying i also like collecting movies on Disc. my DVD Blu Ray library is extensive at well over 10000 discs.
I LOVE MY DVD COLLECTION AND IT IS HUGE, OVER 5000 DVD'S. I recently culled the herd getting rid of some DVD's that were one watch wonders. But I love weird movies and series from my youth some 50 years ago. I just trilled to rediscovering the complete "Barney Miller, The Wild Wild West and Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea TV series." I binge watched them all. I watched 2 rare old seldom seen movies "Colossus The Forbin Project and Fantastic Voyage." You never see these old weird movies and TV series on streaming. I love old Film Noir movies filled with men and women behaving badly. Watching Bogart and Becall in the 'The Big Sleep" (1946 movie) is my addiction. Some itches streaming services just can't scratch!
Same here. I'm from Sysdney Aust and also have in my DVD Collection Voyage,Land of the Giants,Outer Limits,Twilight Zone,Time Tunnel, btw have got Forbin on Blu Ray, with AI these days in the news this movie is as relevant today as when it was released!
I'm among those who would prefer physical media. My first Blu-ray player is a Panasonic DMP-65, which I still use today. I used to use it for watching UA-cam videos, thanks to Viera Cast. But it's been done away with, which made my Chromebook to be the best way to view UA-cam. But then, when I decided to "cut the cord" to save money and got a good used Roku device, I can now view UA-cam videos with that. I even got a 1080P TCL with built-in Roku. Besides that, unlike Viera Cast, it doesn't stretch the videos that were made in the 4:3 aspect ratio. There are some movies I could watch on UA-cam (or Tubi or Crackle or FreeVee or such free services) for FREE. Then again, I would rather pay for a good used Blu-ray release for the quality of picture and sound, as well as extras.
Hoard your physical media like I do! Blu-rays are the best way to watch movies in Full HD. The advantage of having physical media (be it Blu-ray) is that you have a vast library to choose from so you're in control of what you watch. The disadvantage of streaming services is that content gets removed and the picture quality is not as good due to a compressed bit rate, especially if you have a good Wi-Fi connection. Most films and tele-programmes get edited all the time, and that you're paying a subscription of around £16 a month. There are way too many streaming services, which means that you also need numerous subscriptions which is a pain, and they can also be price hiked and therefore many of 'em do not allow account sharing which meant they can lose subscribers.
I gave up on Netflix last year and then I started getting into Blu-ray collecting. Anyone's NYR should be,,, cancel subscriptions and start collecting physical media.
I have noticed this too. Even with fairly fast internet speeds (300mbps down), sometimes the speed will drop due to problems with ISP and then things get blocky or start buffering. I have had a bad 4K pressing before, but an exchange through Amazon and the new disc worked fine. I buy the movies I love on physical. Because yup they cannot take them away, alter them or start inserting ads into them. That's what I wonder is if one day my Vudu or Apple digital copies I've redeemed will start showing ads.
As long as I own DVDs and buy them, they along with blu-rays are not dead. Happy New Year!!!
DVD and Blu-rays are just going throught the same slump Compact Discs did five years ago.
Five years ago you could buy top shelf CD's from op shops (charity stores) for next to nothing. Now there is a CD revival, the prices of new CD's are going up and the selection at op shops has diminished.
DVD'S and Blu-rays are now at the bottom of the curve and it is the time to buy them at your favourite charity shop.
Yup totally agree. You're going to see the market for players dry up fairly soon, to where the only people making them will be the boutique AV companies, probably for $1000/ea. They still make CDs, but tell me where you can buy a new CD player other than boutique AV companies...
i own almost every type of physical media, i own laserdiscs, dvds, blu-rays, and vhs tapes, and i like them
I'll be honest, I do not miss VHS. I hated having to rewind them and the video quality is pretty shitty compared to a DVD.
I still use physical media I don't use streaming because I don't find it useful on my opinion
No one can move physical product in stores because most people see a better value in streaming stuff. On top of that, 4K Blu-ray was too cost prohibitive to supplant Blu-ray and DVD. The players and discs are still too cost prohibitive. And you're going to see more companies follow Samsung and exit the market imo.
Everyone said vinyl albums were dead when the compact discs hit the market, and look where we are now.
It seems it's not quite dead yet in the anime genre. It's so niche that fans still love collecting their favorite series and enjoy having them on a video signal where the quality doesn't depend on the internet quality you have. Yes streaming has a lot of shows but I value being able to see them in a guaranteed 720/1080p output without my internet going wonky.
Streaming costs a lot of $$
They keep Raising the prices
They pull movies and shows at their discretion...That Sux!
DVDs are not going Anywhere
Suppose your favorite movies/ Tv shows Aren't available on Netflix, Hulu, Amazon Prime??
Physical Media will Always be Superior to me!
Why pay Spotify for music when you can just buy the same music on CD and listen to it Anytime You Want.... FREE?
streaming doesn't use tapes or discs so why doesn't dvds and bluray be obsolete as well?
To me no it's still going to be around because like myself i collect dvds and i just collecting blu rays now i love having something in my hands i just went to big lots 2 times last week i buy 4 dvds and 3 blu rays i love collecting movies and TV shows just like i love collect vinyls cassette tapes and cds i love owning music in my collection physical media is king at the end of the day streaming cannot touch physical media period because what if the wi fi aka internet shuts down what you doing to do? Great video happy 2024
People like myself are fixing broken vhs tapes with Scotch tape it starts playing again with out no problem's vhs movies doesn't lock up at all like everything else does now days
Blu-ray was never a thing where I am. I still have a few DVDs though.
I couldn't care less if dvds are here or not.
got a bunch of mine!!! Just as i do games.
I just this minute opened my post, brand new Wizard of Oz Blue Ray
blu rays will never die you do not need internet to play a blu ray and ifyou buy a dvd or blu ray you should buy them at a mom or pop store.
Vhs movies doesn't have to get updated at all like internet does
People like myself are letting people know about blue ray disc movies doesn't play at all when they get scratche up bad enough
Vhs tapes blue ray disc movies keeps you moving more more healthy for your health
I buy physical I have almost 7000 movies now 😮
Surely blu-ray and DVD are not dead. That has to do with movie content and how it is released. There is stuff like Netflix/Amazon original which are movies that for the most part have no disc release. That is on the market since 2015 or so. Looking at content there is less than 25 movies of those i would like to own. Also the quality is like half or less than a disc release.
The disc library in the west is huge. Whatever movies you can stream online quality and quantity is a joke compared to discs out there. The movie discs are dead that is just nonsense made up by a industry that wants us to pay a monthly fee to them and watch their limited and mediocre quality content. Only the top few streamers make a profit. The rest will go broke over time. Netflix is likely the number one company that wants to end discs spreading all sort of nonsense making us believe that discs are so yesterday with most movies in their library also having a disc release.
We can already watch movies in streaming services (netflix, max, disney+ etc) That's why dvds and blu rays are useless and unpopular nowadays
As much as I believe the quality to be far superior on discs making for a better viewing experience, you are 100% spot on. The majority of people have 4K smart TVs and are already equipped for 4K. Load an app and sign up for a subscription and the value is significant. And most people don't give a shit about the lower quality of streaming. Many people don't want the clutter either. No one is going to spend $250 on a 4KBD player plus spend more money upgrading their favorites when they can sign up for a streaming plan for $10-20/mo.
all hail physical. A few months back brought the jurassic park 1 film. Was dvd, 3d DVD and DVD. In ONE case.
Edit - 3d blu ray not dvd.
There is no format called 3D DVD. I think you mean 3D Blu-ray.
@@stonesfan285 shucks u right.
I used to collect DVD and BlueRay movies until about 8 years ago when I setup my own Plex server.
Now I can get the best of both worlds.
1) I can have whatever video quality I'm willing to store on my server.
2) I can stream to any device that I want from a streaming service that I control.
I keep all of my physical media in a cabinet, but I never touch them so they will last as long as possible.
Maybe 4.7 dvds rubbish quality worse than streaming even but blue ray and ultrsyblueray is unbeatable and sometimes the only option for 4k since not all households internet is good enough for 4k
Standard DVD are low resolution. Blu ray is ok.
No there not
I used to collect also but haven't bought a physical disc since forever, I'm happy with streaming, discs take up too much space and I usually only watch them once or twice and then they collect dust,so I found them to be a waste of money and space. Streaming is the future!
Simple answer: *It's not dead yet and it will gain more popularity bc almost every1 dislikes streaming sites.*
If streaming is better than physical media why doesn't it die!?
Because you still have a huge amount of people that prefer the viewing experience of physical. That and there is a big revenue stream to studios for it so I don't see it dying off just yet. I think you're already starting to see it, but players will mostly stop being produced soon and you'll either have to buy used or some boutique will make one for $1000+. Sort of the same way as CD and SACD are. No one really makes new CD players anymore apart from audiophile companies unless you buy a used one somewhere.
Yes physical media is dead, however, you are very limited in what you can watch if you live in the middle of nowhere and are unable to have the necessary high speed internet in which to stream.
no they not dead they alive forever 0:00
Physical media is dying because the big shots just want 100% control of what people can and cannot watch while using the "it's convinient for people" as an excuse. DVDs all the way! 📀
Vhs movies out doing y'all's video now days y people are lying people now days about blue ray disc movies doesn't get scratche up Yes they do i have some myself and and people can see for them self's slowly gets scratched up in time everything proven
Lying people now days blue ray disc movies does get scratche up i got some that people can see for them self
yes they are dead, all the stores stopped selling them in my town
you must live in a crap town then 😃
@@leazesndr5318 yes we had 2 places to buy them but even the video rental place got out of it this year
no they not
it's a joke
that's not true
