WEIRD TECH FROM THE 80s : The Aroma Disc Player
There were many crazy inventions that came out of the 80s. Lots of weird and wonderful fads that now, in hindsight, seemed like a very drug influenced mental hiccup. Some of these fads are well remembered, but there are others that have faded away with the sands of time.
One such device was the Aroma Disc Player. I never owned one, but I remember seeing ads for it back around 1984. Being someone who loved discs, whether they be records or CDs, I thought this was a very cool and interesting idea. I think part of me always wanted one, but it just never happened. As I mention in the video, these things were surprisingly popular, but I don't think they stuck around on the market for very long.
This was actually a very popular item during the Christmas season of 1983. Keep in mind this was also at the heights of the Cabbage Patch Kids craze. What a crazy Christmas that was! Many stores at the time reported that their entire stock of Aroma Disc Players sold out in days!
But how did this thing work? How did it play scents? I talk about this in the video. There was actually quite a selection of scented discs that you could buy at that time. In the video I talk about exactly what scents were available, and how much they cost at that time.
I thought this thing would be super hard to find on the second hand market. But I was surprised to see quite a few of them listed on eBay. You can buy a used, unpackaged one for well under $20.00. And I have even seen unopened ones still in their original packaging for a very affordable price. However, I would wager that many of the 40 year old scented discs have long since lost their smell.
Who knows, maybe sometime down the road I will indulge myself and get one of these crazy artifacts from the 80s. And maybe I will do a video showing it in action.
Did you ever own the Aroma Disc Player? What did you think of it? Did you have a favorite scent? Do you still own one? Does it still work? Feel free to leave a comment!
On this channel I post videos relating to retro and vintage technology. Things like cassettes, CDs, old cameras, laser disc, radios, TVs, DVDs, vinyl, VCRs, home recording gear, microphones, mixers, synthesizers, drum machines, video games, and so much more. If this is your thing, please subscribe!

Behringer has become very well known around the world for making affordable clones of classic analogue synthesizers. They come out with many new models every year, and there are thousands of people around the world who eagerly await the next release. But there seems to also be a great number of people who have an issue with these clones. Indeed, Behringer has received an awful lot of hate for t...
What Is That Thing At The End of Every Movie???
Переглядів 22514 днів тому
Have you ever noticed that symbol that seems to appear at the end of every movie? If you watch the closing credits right to the end, there are often a few logos that you see, and this one is almost always one of them. But what is it? And what does it represent? In this video I answer this burning question. The explanation to this is twofold. First, it represents a group of people. But it is als...
Do They Still Make New VCRs?
Переглядів 63 тис.21 день тому
Have you ever wondered if new VCRs are still being made? Is there still a company somewhere out there who are still cranking them out? We know the VCR is pretty much dead here in North America, but is there a remote country in some far-flung region of the world where the VCR is still king? In this video, I examine this question. I talk about a specific company, and their history making the wond...

The Most Mysterious Song On The Internet : More Thoughts On "Like The Wind"

In this video, I have some more thoughts to share about the whole "most mysterious song on the internet" phenomenon. I had made a video about this a while ago, in which I argued that this incident is not as improbable as many people may think. In fact, even though this is an extreme case of a mystery song not being solved, I will wager that any day now another such song will show itself on the ...
Cassette High Speed Dubbing : Really, What Was The Point?
Переглядів 2772 місяці тому
I am sure many of you remember high speed dubbing. Many stereos, boom boxes, cassette decks and ghetto blasters back in the 80s and 90s offered this feature. I recall using it a few times back in the day. It seemed to be a popular feature that people looked for when they bought a new tape player/recorder. But from my experience, high speed dubbing often sounded terrible. I recall the dubs sound...

But, from my experience, when you do find them for sale at your local retailer (or even online), in most cases they tend to be Maxell UR normal bias tapes. How Does A VCR Work? : Part 1 : The Tape Path

Springfield, MO is home to National Audio Company which, last I checked, was the only company in the USA still manufacturing *audio* cassettes. Out of curiosity, I called them and asked if they still make VHS tapes. They said no - but they do have a backlog of new/old stock. I bought a used VHS/DVD combo from someone on CL about 10-ish years ago. It's been months since I used it, and that was to dub some old VHS content onto DVD using a video-to-computer capture device I got on Temu. Oddly enough, my son and DIL bought my grandson a TV/VHR combo at a yard sale and he became so enamored with it that he wore it out watching his yard sale collection of tapes.

I imagine video heads were the component that dried up. Video heads were by far the most expensive component inside a VCR to manufacture, and they are the most exquisitely manufactured non-micro electronics product to generally to have ever been found in the home. They are difficult to manufacture and require extreme precision. Nobody will tool up and make them now, so it’s game over.

I can think of several *actual* issues: Pilfering, Chinese Working Conditions, Lack of Innovation, Whiny Baby Syndrome, Clones (Not) Clones. TLDR: I own exotic synths as well as some behringer gear. One one hand, I can understand one part of the approach by them trying to bring back instruments into new hands at a different price point. However, the issues with Uli and his company are numerous and it has little to do with the purity of some sound. This actually has to do with having principles. Yes - principles. It does matter, and the problem is compounded because they are doing each of these points at scale. 1. They pilfer, whether that's an older instrument, a new instrument, or even a known brand name. See Swing copy the Keystep, The Moog line copies - Crave vs Mother-32, Edge vs. DFAM, Mother-15 vs. Grandmother, then some of the modulars being lifted from indie creators no less, then the attempted claim and misuse of the Oberheim brand ... This is based in a lack of principles and ethics. 2. Working conditions in China. This is certainly not unique to Behringer and it reaches many industry sectors, but the reason you get such a great price is because work conditions and pay in that country is nothing short of atrocious. That has to do with principles, both from them and for you, the buyer. Understand that you're part of the problem if all you can come up with is defending a price. This isn't about being elite either. This is about actually having principles as a consumer and going out of your way to include equity in your calculations for any one purchase. That includes evaluating gear, which in this company's case is often copied from an existing or even a past company with creators who are still with us today. It's really, really important in order to sustain all sort of economies. 3. Behringer's lack of *actual* innovation in new product development. They are so hell bent on copying everything that relatively little, overt creativity comes out of this place. Yes - there are a few wins along the way (DeepMind, some controllers, more? I wouldn't know ...) and yes, once in a while we see a copy with some extended feature. However, I would want to see '2.0' and '3.0' versions of all these classics. Fine - use the old design as your starting point. Now excite me with all those capable brains at work in the designer's division to rethink the original instrument without losing its essence. That's a competitive spirit, not a rip from your industry compatriots. 4. They can't take the heat. Behringer has a 'foot in mouth disease' they can't shake by deriding commentators who are well within their rights to call out their business practices, decisions, and copies. 5. As you say, these aren't really 'clones'. Many of the Behringer products are actually approximations. The misuse of the word 'clone' is as much a fault of the public as it is Behringer's. However, they should do better on this end. Behringer products fall into a range of accuracy so because of this, skinning them with a pilfered look of an original instrument is actually disingenuous. Sometimes the copies sound pretty good. Other times, not so much. As a recent example, look at the KT-369. The transformers play a critical part in the 'sound coloring' of these compressors. There is nothing wrong with the Midas transformers Behringer has in there - that's really cool! - but they ain't Neve AMS transformers either! Knowing that, why skin it like a Neve, right down to the knobs and color scheme? This appearance of an original is actually part of the problem. If we're really going to evaluate cloning, other boutique outfits who make Neve-like copies go right to sources like Carnhill to get that much closer, all at similar price points. The point is, why sell me a Pontiac Fiero with Ferrari body kit on it. Much of the time it's just that. The used prices on some of Behringer gear reflect that too. The original buyers are taking a bath on these supposed clones, which also says something about how the market feels about some of these products.

‼️To the commenters hating on this video, let me make things worse. Of COURSE if you had a clue you’d remember that Febreeze had a “CD player” freshener called “Scentstories”. You put the “disc” into the “player” and could hit play and stop. Released 2004 discontinued 2008. I’ve just provided more information in this comment than in the whole video 😂 If this guy did more than two minutes of research and even bothered to try to find both of the products (they’re cheaper than the mic he’s using) it could have been a real video. Instead it’s a f@rt in the wind. 🤡

I am one of the few still watching tapes in 2024. Growing up with blockbuster then watching it slowly die made me so distraught that I went about collecting tapes starting in 2018. We now have a tape room full, all the classics, and multiple backup VCR's & tv combos. Magnetic tape lasts longer than freaking DVD's that scratch up too easily then cant be played. Sure, tape degrades with use but it has to be used ALOT to degrade. Why do you think the governments still store data on magnetic tape?

I bought a Samsung 52cm CTR TV with built-in VHS second hand in 1998, it was about 12 months old att. Its quality was phenomenal. It made no sound after inserting the tape. The picture quality was, for the time, incredible & it convinced me Korean made products were equivalent to the best Japan or anyone att could make.
