Sony ICD UX 570 : How Normalization Can Help Your Recordings!
In this video, I once again feature a very useful function that is available on the Sony ICD UX 570 digital recorder. As I have mentioned before, I love this little recorder. It has been a workhorse for me for about 5 years. It has 101 uses, and is very reliable and stable. Please feel free to check out the playlist on my channel that is entirely dedicated to this great little recorder.
In this video I talk about normalization. The ICD UX 570 offers a normalization feature, which can come in very handy. Especially if you happen to have a recording that is very faint and quiet. So what exactly is normalization and what does it do? Watch the video to find out!
I use my Sony ICD UX 570 in many different ways. I use it to record narration for my videos. I also use it to digitize old analogue recordings. I can use it to digitize cassettes, vinyl, reels of tape, whatever. I also use it for my own original compositions. When I am done recording a song on my multitracker, I often do mixdown to this recorder. As well, I use it for a podcast that I have been producing for many years. Again, this thing is so useful!
There are actually many features and settings that are built into this recorder. I have already discussed many such features in numerous videos on this channel. Please feel free to check those out! I also love how this thing has a built-in USB connection, and can be connected very simply to any laptop with a USB port. Transferring files from this recorder to your laptop is as simple as dragging and dropping.
Have you ever used the Sony ICD UX 570? Do you own one? What do you think of it? Is there a particular purpose that you use it for? What do you love most about this recorder? Or do you hate this device? Is there another recorder that you think is much better? Please feel free to share a comment!
As I have mentioned before, I am not being endorsed by Sony. This is simply my honest opinion about a device that I enjoy using.
On this channel I post videos relating to retro and vintage technology. Things like cassettes, CDs, old cameras, laser disc, radios, TVs, DVDs, vinyl, VCRs, home recording gear, microphones, mixers, synthesizers, drum machines, video games, and so much more. If this is your thing, please subscribe!

Do They Still Make Floppy Disks?
Переглядів 1,2 тис.21 годину тому
Many of us definitely recall floppy disks. I am sure a majority of you have used them at one point in the past. Of course, by today's standards, they seem very antiquated and silly. But for a time in the 90s and into the 2000's, floppy disks were everywhere. I was a university student in the early 2000's, and I certainly filled a number of these. I remember I could buy a blank one at my school ...
What Exactly Is A Flexi Disc?
Переглядів 45814 днів тому
Have you ever seen a flexi disc? Have you ever owned one or played one? They are definitely rather odd yet also rather fascinating. It is basically a very thin record that you can play on any turntable, just like a regular record. But they are extremely thin, so much so that they can be curled and slightly folded. I recall back in my childhood that flexi discs were pretty much everywhere. I use...
My Favorite Page In The Radio Shack Catalog
Переглядів 2,1 тис.21 день тому
As a tech geek growing up in the 80s, I loved Radio Shack. What tech geek didn't? I spent hours in my local Radio Shack, perusing the endless selection of cords and cables and adapters and blank tapes. For me, it was heaven. In this video, I share with you an old Radio Shack catalog from 1993. In particular, I show you what my absolute favorite page was in the catalog. Every time a new catalog ...
What Was The Very First Cell Phone?
Переглядів 362Місяць тому
It goes without saying that our entire culture relies very heavily on cell phones and smartphones. We have reached a point in our society where almost everyone from children to adults is carrying one. We use them for everything, from entertainment, to banking, to taking photos, making videos, managing our schedules, communication and so much more. Many folks would be quick to admit that they co...
What Was The First Movie On VHS? (You'll Never Guess!)
Переглядів 21 тис.Місяць тому
A while ago I did a video about the very last movie to ever be released on the VHS format. Of course, VHS was the dominant format for many years, with millions of people around the world owning a VHS VCR. The heyday of the VHS tape started in the 80s and ran right up until the early 2000s when the DVD took over. But what was the very first movie ever to be released on VHS tape? Do you know? It'...
Do They Still Make 8 Track Tapes?
Переглядів 11 тис.Місяць тому
So, do they actually still manufacture 8 track tapes? Some folks seem to think that they still do. I found this a little hard to believe, so I decided to do some research. The answer may surprise some of you. 8 tracks were all the rage in the 70s and into the early part of the 80s. Growing up in that period, I recall so many cars had 8 track players in them. They really were everywhere. I recal...
What If "Subways of Your Mind" Was A Big Hit? : World's Most Mysterious Song
Переглядів 308Місяць тому
Many of you have probably heard that the elusive mystery behind the song "Subways of Your Mind" was recently solved. After years of trying to locate the original artist, the band behind this song was finally found. Now, I find this very interesting. On one hand, it is really amazing that this mystery was solved. We all now know who the artist was. But on the other hand, I am a little disappoint...
What Sounds Better? : Compact Disc or MiniDisc?
Переглядів 1,6 тис.2 місяці тому
I have always been very intrigued with MiniDisc. I first heard of this format way back around the mid 90s. I just recently bought my very first MiniDisc recorder/player, second hand. I wanted to compare the sound quality of MiniDisc to the sound quality of compact disc. I did not own any pre-recorded minidiscs, but I found one online for a good price. I wanted to purchase some music that I was ...
What Are "Type 0" Blank Cassettes?
Переглядів 6 тис.2 місяці тому
For some time now I have heard people talking about type 0 blank cassettes. What exactly are these? Of course, I always knew about type 1 tapes (normal bias), type II (chrome) and type 4 (metal). But I wasn't exactly sure what type 0 meant. Was this a term that referred to all those super cheap, ultra poor quality tapes that used to be so common back in the day? In this video, I take a close lo...
What Was The Very First Cassette Recorder?

Cassettes were around for a long time. In fact, one could argue they are still around, just not as much as in the past. There are still indie bands out there today who insist on releasing their music on cassette. It cannot be denied that there is a nostalgic charm to cassettes. I was a huge user of cassettes back in my youth. In the very early days I would use them to record songs off of the ra...

What Was The Last Movie Released on VHS?

There is an entire generation of folks who were brought up on the VHS tape. Many of us grew up in the age of the VCR, and it was common practice for families to make a weekly sojourn to video rental places like Blockbuster, to pick out movies to watch over the weekend. Classic Drum Machine : The Roland TR-909
Переглядів 2013 місяці тому
In the world of drum machines, the Roland TR-909 is definitely considered a classic. Released in 1983, it was a successor to the legendary TR-808. At that time, the 909 was considered a commercial flop (much like the 808). But in later years it would become the driving force behind many hit records. The 909 drum machine was also a very key component in the development of many genres, including ...

I have Japan pressed CDs, SHM, Non-SHM, Blu Spec...most of them sound better than the red book versions released in America. I can really tell a difference from CDs released in Japan in late 80s and early 90s vs their American pressings. the Japan versions definately are superior.

Another helpful video on this Sony recorder. I have one motivated to buy from your earlier videos, and it’s been fantastic. I also use it to transfer original music from my old analog R2R and Tascam DP008 digital recorder. Would the normalization be just as effective as an equalizer? I think I know the answer but am curious what you think. Also, I appreciate you making these videos because they truly help in getting the most out of this incredible recorder. Thanks.

I still have my old 5.25" floppies with the programs I wrote for my Commodore 64 back in the 80s. I am hoping to be able to acquire a working C64 and Commodore 1541 disk drive in the near future to be able to relive the old days and have a kind of "my personal computing history" collection at home. I hope the disks are still readable and, if they are, that their contents can be transferred to fresh floppies and maybe other media.

from the 90s till the 2000s? Well, no 🙂 If you don't take the big 8" Floppies from the 70s in account, floppies were also very popular in the 80s and more or less the dominating media. Also the shown 3,5" disk was invented by Sony already at the beginning of the 80s.

8" Floppies were the first big floppy disk format, from the 1970s and early 80s. Back in the 90s, I had a Xerox 820 computer that used those. 5 1/4" floppies were the second generation, from the late 70s through the 80s. My Commodore 64 uses these. 3 1/2" floppies were the 3rd generation, from the mid-80s into the early 2000s. My first 2 PCs used these, and I still have a 3 1/2" floppy USB disk drive.

That could have been new-old stock: manufactured over a decade ago, and sitting on a shelf forever. There's also the last floppy disk business, which refurbs existing disks (reformatting them, replacing labels, and putting into new packaging) - all those disks were made before 2011, even if the box is new.

I remember using floppy disks in the 90s up to mid 00s. Their storage capacities were pretty bad compared to CD-ROMs which were being introduced around that time, but they were cheap, convenient and you could edit and remove data from them unlike CD-ROMs which were locked in after burning data on them once. I used them all the time for games, text, image, sound and MS-Office files.

I loved those as a kid and obviously moved on starting with my first 64MB USB 1.1 flash drive in the early 2000's. BUT I too have a somewhat vintage laptop with a floppy drive in it. Dunno if it still works but I'd like to try it. There are many cool games which just feel better on a 4:3 screen.

I'm one of those weirdos who stores video files on floppies for the hell of it. Also had to write a copy of Blue Monday on mp3 to a 5.25" disk because of the vinyl cover. It was also fun trying to get as many compact games, demos and tracker songs as I could onto an ancient single sided 180k floppy. I think it's possible to get Shakespeare's entire works on a 3.5" floppy if you use 7z and DMF. My boot disks, essential software, games and multimedia examples for old CDless computers are a slightly more practical.

Digital album sales and even new cds are made fairly hard to find as not all releases come out in that format. It's sort of like when manufacturers discontinued vinyl albums and singles in the late 80's as they cannibalized their own sales and declines were that much more dramatic. The first rule of retail is, you can't sell the man empty shelves. If you could monitor how many used cds and vinyl records sold that would be a good indicator but that info can't be obtained. Most music except for current and best selling catalog titles are out of print and it's always sort of worked that way since it costs to warehouse titles and if they don't sell, that's throwing good money after bad. Most collectors are like myself where they want to explore a given era in depth. Classic rock, soul, and jazz is often limited on cd because the cd wasn't current at that point in time. For 90's and later, vinyl is limited because they didn't sell in massive numbers when that music was current either.

I don't see console manufacturers or movie/TV distributors utilizing these new discs, so assuming burners are eventually made available to the public it will be up to fan communities to make something of them. With Linux gaming growing in popularity for both PC gaming and running emulators, I hope this means a standarduzed system is worked out for a console-like Linux distro to run a variety of games from these discs (heck, maybe the discs could contain a tailored Linux distro that launches for running said games and emulators off of them). Thankfully video will be easier to sort out, what with several standard formats already existing.
