Never let the golden age of gaming die
These young whipper snappers need to know!
Doing my best!
2:27 Oh, I know the basis for this enemy! There's a japanese legend, Okiku and the 9 plates, which has several versions but it's basically about a servant girl and how she was punished for "losing" one of the ten heirloom plates from her household. Depending on the version, it could be that her master himself hid or broke it and tried to shame Okiku, but promised to hide the mistake or help her find it if she would marry him. Okiku refuses, while endlessly counting the plates to see if she can find the tenth... until she gets dropped into a well by her enraged master.
Then she turns into a vengeful ghost that everyday counts the plates, and lets out an inhuman scream when reaching number 9, as she cannot find the tenth.
Or something like that. But it's a very popular legend, so it gets referenced pretty often. I think Monster Party also had a boss based on it!
Very interesting, thanks for sharing!
Educational
"No one suspects the butterfly" - Bart Simpson
It's true
Very cool!
Lovely video.
Thanks for sharing.
Thanks! Have a great day
Zombie holes are the worst! Love the video!
Trust us, we know!
The backgrounds look good for a FamiCom game.
The youkai motif kind of reminds me of another Konami game, Getsu Fuuma Den (月風魔伝), but the gameplay for that game is more like the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles NES game.
I only know about it because I saw a DLC character & stage from that series in Castlevania: Harmony of Despair and wondered where they had come from.
*ahem* as for the Japanese manual of **this** game...
My rough understanding is that you play as Akira, a boy with supernatural psychic powers who learned of the return of the Youkai Lord and his evil plot to conquer the human realm. He takes it upon himself to use his ESP and special attack, the "Psycho Stinger", to try to stop the invading Youkai Lord and his minions.
("Psycho" is often used as a prefix for psychic and ESP-related things in Japanese pop culture, though it can also represent the mental health condition we typically associate with it)
There are 6 stages (tower of face murals?, youkai forest, underworld, the tower leading to the capital, the bone capital, and Youma Weird Castle). Akira must use the "Psycho Stinger" as well as the ESP items in the area to defeat the youkai. Every scene has a "big boss" who must be defeated to obtain a key to continue to the next area. At the end of scene 2 and scene 4 Garus/Garth? [last name I can't read] (妖帝ガルス)'s subordinates, Zeran (ゼラン) and Gain (ガイン is read like 'Guy' + 'n') are also waiting to attack. Garus/Garth himself appears at a rocky area at the end of the 6th scene.
[I'm guessing Garus/Garth Whoever is the name of the Youkai Lord].
Akira can level up his attack from "Psycho Stinger" to "Psychokinesis" to "Psycho Flare" using experience.
Instant effect items
Power up ([POW]) - Disadvantageous to not take! Restores power
Experience source (🔴) - Appears after vanquishing a youkai
Medicinal bottle (🧴) - Become invincible with a telekinetic barrier
Shooting star (🌠) - Fast! Akira speeds up
Alter ego technique (☆) - Akira splits into 3 people. His damage also multiplies by 3.
Experience Book (📕) - 'Ups' his experience in one breath
Selectable items
Flash (🔦) - Stops opponents movements for 15 seconds
Bomb(💣)- Damages enemies indicated on screen
Super eyes (👓) - Able to see invisible enemies for 15 seconds
Psychokinesis (☞) - Able to move physical objects/solid bodies
Technique items
Revival butterfly (🦋) - There are power restoring revival butterflies as well as killer butterflies that steal lives
Key (🔑) - Appears after defeating a big boss. You will not be able to go to the next scene without it.
Characters
Akira - Embarks on a solo quest to the Youma Weird Castle after unexpected circumstances make him aware of Garth McBadguy's plans. Akira's ESP will probably break new grounds while stacking up experience from fighting youkai.
Onibaba - This one is already famous from Japan's folklore, right? However this old hag/witch spits fireballs out of her mouth, so be careful!
Upside down Man - A puzzling enigmatic youkai of unknown origin. From his creepy appearance you can bet he will most certainly chase after you if he is able, right?
Flame Puma - A youkai who draws on the blood of a deceased flame salamander. It will come to spring upon you with swift movements.
Fox Jr. - A youkai who changed into the kitsune of familiar ages past. Many tales of it have come out of Japanese folklore.
Rokuro - A ghastly fellow whose head suddenly comes off to attack. Beat him quickly!
Skeleton - Just a typical skeleton but when commanded by Garth Evilman they will fly at you en masse.
If the time runs out, the "butterfly of death" will come to steal Akira's life. After defeating the boss at the end of a stage a key will appear and Akira will not be able to continue to the next area without taking it. Also, don't forget to pick up the ESP item that is indicated on screen. There is a place at the end of scene 6 where you will absolutely not be able to continue without using ESP. Beware that this ability will not be useful if you are not at maximum experience. Finally, throw down the emerging Garth Whatshisface and restore peace to the human realm!
“Not a crook pose” made me laugh
I'm glad I watched this video when I did, I was just about to go down a zombie hole.
I know you warned us, that this game will not ease our castlevania itch, and that it is too punishing, but I will still try it despite all its faults, maybe Im going down a zombie hole (no bueno). Great video again.
Haha very brave, godspeed
this feels like rambo and monster party mashed together
Rambo Party!
First. Hey man, I look forward to hearing you say the word Spooker-Dooker on your podcast every October. Thanks for everything
Great video! The fact that you find these games and take time to review them is astonishing
Bill Chicago
It astonishes even me
I still need to get into the Castlevania series. Maybe this game is what I need to finally make that jump....just kidding lol. Loved the video, NES Friend! Hope you're doing well!
Lol yeah dodge this one on your way to Castlevania
Holy Diver is the best Castlevania clone on the NES. Tough as nails but far better than 8 Eyes.
Is there an over the counter cream I can buy for my Castlevania itch?
As long as it's not on your Tose
I never heard of this game, how did you find out about it?
I found it in my house
I like the "made in the mid-2000s early years of youtube" vibe quality of this video.
I would pay 2 dollars for this game.
PayPal?
Happy Wednesday everyone! Don't forget to join the club
This sounds like your emulator is stuttering
I don't use an emulator. Sorry for the poor audio though
@@NESFriend huh, so it's just in the recording?
are you speaking specifically about the game music that plays over the title screen?
Wow, this game looks and sounds terrible. Awesome vid 👍
