I'm reminded of the TOS episode "Day of the Dove" when Kirk and Kang realize they and their crews are being manipulated to fight each other by an entity feeding off hate and order their respective men to lay down their arms and laugh at the entity. Gowron just needed to be pointed toward how the Dominion was manipulating them and what the Dominion hoped to achieve with that manipulation to get him onboard with countering it. "Klingons kill for their own purposes", as Kang put it.

The decision to have Martok be the changeling and not Gowron was, in part, made so as not to disappoint TNG fans who did not want to lose Gowron. But this episode had the unexpected effect of causing the producers to love J.G. Hertzler's portrayal of Martok, which prompted them to find and rescue the real Martok.
This led to Martok becoming a much more prominent character on DS9 that Gowron was, and ironically leading to the writers killing off Gowron and having Martok succeed him as the new Chancellor.

Well Gowron always saw Worf as his ultimate adversary since it was thanks to Worf that he became Chancellor.
And someone who is willing to allow another to lead despite having all the cultural rights to do so, is someone you keep close but never let your guard down around them or give them any reason to kill you which Gowron later does.
Martok on the other hand is someone who Worf knows and respects greatly as a warrior so it was only natural to kill off Gowron.

It was too late for that as Worf's entire family was gone. All the lands were seized and redistributed to other houses. His family records likely deleted in the computer databases as never having existed. Even the Chancellor cannot restore that kind of damage by that point, evidenced by how Martok couldn't do it when he became Chancellor. What Gowron did was so heinous, even beyond what K'mpec and Duras agreed to in the original round of dishonor.

During the episode his various forms included fire, fog, and a lifeform that could propel itself through space. Also Odo seemed to pick up a trick or two from him as at the end of the episode he turned into a a golden plasma like energy to hold Kira as that was when they were in a relationship.
