Happy New Year Duke! I'm like you, I love my Rivian and hope for a bright future for the company. As more people learn about the quality of their vehicle and the many benefits of EVs in general, I believe the company will have a bright future, even if it has some challenges currently. And like you, I have every intention of making my next vehcile another Rivian. R3X sounds about right to me. Cheers!

I think Musk saved Rivian by introducing Cybertruck with a very polarizing design. Rivian doesn't need to worry about Cybertruck taking away their market share. This reminds me of a Netflix story: The 1st CEO of Netflix said Blockbuster had a chance to bankrupt Netflix in early 2000 if it kept investing in its streaming business. Instead, the new owner of Blockbuster dropped the streaming business and therefore this gave Netflix a chance to grow its business.

    • @thedukeofmiddleville

That’s a great parallel with Netflix. That’s the opportunity Rivian has.

Congrats on the silliest analogy I've ever seen. You realize the R1T came out first, right? You realize Tesla showed up dead last to the pickup party, right? You realize Cybertruck is by far the more technologically advanced between the two, right? lol
The Cybertruck came from the very back of the pack to become the best-selling EV pickup and you think that makes them Blockbuster in your analogy? Please. I'm rooting for Rivian, but they aren't a threat to Tesla, silly. Tesla is worth all of the major auto manufacturers COMBINED.

We own both the Model Y and Gen 1 R1S quad motor. Both of them are right there depending on what you are looking at. Software, I'll still give Tesla the edge though Rivian is catching up. Hardware design, I'm with Rivian. There are also some subtleties in software where either Rivian or Tesla has the edge. The good thing is that competition is growing which is good for us.

I agree about the effect the $7,500 tax credit retraction will be less for Rivian than for its competitors. Even perhaps a little benefit for the next year. However for Rivian as a company to survive it all hinges on the success of the R2, which will be 100% affected by the loss of the tax credit.

Rivian needs to lower the prices on R1S and R1T at some point. With used Rivian's becoming available at significant savings, their market will be shrinking, and since the designs haven't changed (which I'm OK with), many with the disposable incomes to purchase new, will want to try brands with newer-designs.

I do think the tax credit may affect R2 sales a little because it is for the mass market seller and does qualify for the tax credit. However, I think the R2 will overcome that. I was happy the R2 qualified for the tax credit and yes, it will hurt a bit and delay me a little in getting the R2, but I will be buying it in 2026 still.

    • @thedukeofmiddleville
      @thedukeofmiddleville  Місяць тому

The way this tax credit is structured it hurts resale value for everyone, especially those that are not qualified for it. Plus, they just accelerate depreciation. This is my fourth EV and you can basically just subtract the tax credit amount from the value of the vehicle almost instantly. If the R2 is good enough it won't need a tax credit to attract buyers.
      Thanks for commenting!

The R2 will be clutch for Rivian moving forward. If they can get it to preform as well as similar cars in that segment and keep the 45k price point, it will be cement their future success. You really can't beat ownership experience, it is the best.

Bought a tesla October 2024. I got the 2025 model y, used my military benefits, referral bonus $2000, $7500 tax credits plus trade in $5000 with $2000 down in got it for 32000 instead of $50000. In GA 100% disabled veterans benefits didn't have to pay $3700 in taxes and fees, etc. But it's now January haven't gotten my plates, they are very slow processing my tags my temporary tags expired yesterday, so now I can't drive the car. Their customer service after paying for the car sucks. Didn't realize it would be such a slow process to register and get my tags. I haven't had to worry about the service maintenance but worry their services sucks their too. Will see how long it will take to get my tags. However, I do enjoy the model Y and charge from home outlet, which is fine by me.

I wish all EVs success as we tackle whatever changes the administration implements. My bigger concern is that we might see a slower rollout of public charging infrastructure. Here in Missouri for example, there is a large gap in reliable fast chargers when traveling on I44. We also need expanded L2 charging at apartment complexes and mulit family dwellings. I'd happily give up my ev tax credit to see more public funding to help eliminate these barriers.

Honestly, I see a big oppertunity with installing these chargering station at large vistor centers along the interstate. People already stop there for bathrooms and food and sleep (in their cars). The government puts them there at their centers, they make some money, you improve the infrastructure, and the spending at these rest stops.

Agreed. I do hope they keep the used EV tax credit because I think that is more important. More affluent buys are going to buy an EV regardless of the tax credit but the used EV tax credit could make the difference for lower income buyers that can only afford to shop in the used car space.

I don't have any EV but I am open to idea of them especially for local driving. I do like the concept of and EV but unlike you, I am not a "let me have the first edition" of anything. I don't want or need 1000 HP or the ability to kill myself by driving the 1/4 mile in 2.5 seconds. I just want a reliable vehicle that will take me where I want to go. Tesla will not be hurt by thevtax credit because they build vehicles at a profit already. Very good chance when the tax credit goes a way, Tesla might drop prices to keep unit sales growing. Rivian is not in that position yet.
Saying Rivian has more affluent customers is kind of a weak argument. Economies of scale is one of biggest drivers of profit and growth. If having affluent customers was the key to success, Rolls Royce would own the world instead of being a division of BMW.

The Wall Street casino wants crazy tech and hype. Not much of what Rivian had shown on their road to growth screams innovation or something worth a ton of hype.
Yes, the R3 might be amazing, if they can hit their price and production objectives. The R2 is looking like a very mainstream appealing vehicle. Can Rivian produce them at profit early on in production, not sold on that idea.
The pace of Chinese EV growth and the Hyundai Group growth is putting great pressure on Rivian.
I know there are people saying they would never buy Chinese vehicles as drive around in their Western branded vehicle already with Vhinese parts in it and using their Chinese made smartphones.
I think just the EV9 and Lucid Gravity is hurting Rivian. BMW is getting positive press on their ESUV.

It probably is better but Rivian made only 50,000 trucks total; less than Ferrarri in 2024; they lost $40,000 per truck. It owes $6 Billion. One must question if they will be financially able to continue. How many will Rivian sell if the federal subsidies are removed and they have to ask customers for an additional $7500; or make it $47,500 lost per vehicle? BEVs don't make much of a work truck; the Rivian weighs 8500 lbs. On UA-cam a couple used an RT to tow a horse trailer across the country on the highway the range was exausted in 2 hours at 60mph the charge of the big battery takes near 2 hours on a fast charger to fully charge; they averaged about 30 mph on the trip, in good weather.
