Nice video. Very fair on your info, etc. We know Rivian is rated pretty good and are quite expensive. Personally, EV's aren't for me. I live in UT. I have owned 3 different hybrids, the last one a 2021 Kia Sorrento Hybrid. Got about 40 mpg with it and no long charging or range anxiety. Decided to sell it and buy a straight ICE vehicle. It comes down to convenience. On road trips it can be bothersome to have to wait up to an hour to charge and EV. The infrastructure is still lacking like you showed. No canopies or anything on most of the chargers. In the back of parking lots with few or no lights, etc. Great idea carrying a windshield wash kit with you.

Dude 270 miles on 80% charge is great. That’s way longer than I do normally and stop for a few to bathroom break and stretch my legs. No idea why everyone is complaining but that’s awesome. I’d be doing the same stops and lengths with my accord. By the time you get gas, get food, walk around for a couple min that 25 min is nothing.

Personally, I think electric vehicles are great daily drivers if your communite is small. I bought a 22 chevy bolt euv for $18k with 20k miles on it. I live in a very cheap state for home electricity. Our current rate is about $0.08 per kWh. I charge my car at home only. I drive less than 30 miles per day. I charge once per week and cost about $5.30 per charge. So I'm spending about $21 dollars per month assuming I even feel like charging my vehicle to 100%. I own a gas vehicle too. That is for travel, a backup, and or a very long journey. Having a mix of both worlds is a great thing.

I was at a hotel last week that had L2 chargers. Not really L2 though because it was only charging at 6kW. We were having single digit temps. I used Scheduled Climate Control with “Pull from Charger to maintain range.” It still decreased my state of charge by 2% in about 3o minutes. Several on Rivian forums have said that this “Pull from Charger to maintain range” setting does not actually direct the wall current straight to the heater. It simply activates the Charger if the car is plugged in, to counteract the drain on the battery by the heater.

  • @diydrivenGA

Lost quite a bit between the cold and the GOM basing my range on my recent driving when I haven't been driving. Lost about 20%. Sucks but this is my daily, and I don't roadtrip with any frequency for this to be an issue. I just plug in a bit more times during the week. My average charge session is 3 hours on a level 2 for several days of driving. This isn't an inconvenience as I can plug in when I get home, right before I turn in for the night, or even when I first wake up in the morning, the last two times putting me in the off-peak pricing for power, which is a bit cheaper in the winter.

I city drive my EV, a 23 Mach-E with the PTC heater. I don't bother the preconditioning, because the car sits outside all the time, given I have no garage, but I do charge at home. I figure the extra energy from the house for a small efficiency bump on a short commute isn't worth it, especially when the car is outside at work for another 8 hours, even if I had a garage at home. I only care about preconditioning before a long trip. Likely not worth it for daily driving tho. We also have a hybrid Escape. They're about equal for $/km right now, but the EV is half as cheap to run in the summer.

You set yourself up for maximum success. 1. Started fully topped off. 2. Preconditioned with it plugged in. 3. Biggest thing is it started out in your garage not ambient temp. Where the issue, begins is start out with it sitting outside all nite. Now plugged in even outside it offsets most loss. I’m not using heated seats only. No one with ICE vehicle ever does this since heat is a natural byproduct of ICE. Ice does experience some range loss at 5°. Diesel sure does.

  • @cowelk

Thanks for posting all this information. It is very useful even for me without an EV. My off peak electricity rate is 0.06 per kwh which means it would have cost me 96 cents to drive the 31 miles. That is really good. That would translate to about 90 mpg for gas. My on peak rate is 0.20 cents per kwh which is $3.20 and that is equal to about 31 mpg of gas. Still pretty good for a decent size vehicle. So, charging off peak is the way to go but still not bad if you have to charge at home during peak time.

@cowelk Yes this is what people don’t get, one could literally daily drive a Hummer EV truck on MTs for cheaper than a Prius if they only charged it off peak… I say this because I may have plugged your numbers into fueleconomy gov and did a comparison. 😁 Another thing people often overlook is the speed of their home charger, as one has to keep in mind; that the faster the home charger (assuming ones ev can support it), the more miles worth of charge one can accumulate *at off peak rates.* So it may be wise to have a hardwired 11.5 kW or even a 19.2 kW home charger if one drives many miles a day, tows frequently etc. and the vehicle supports it.

A worse idiocy is the push in CA to ban all diesel 18-wheelers. I can fuel an 18-wheeler in 10 minutes and be back on the road. Truckers have log books and time restraints. EV big rigs take SEVERAL HOURS to charge, wasted time, which is highly disruptive to schedules, with a range of 200-300 miles in mountains, that would necessitate fueling 2 or 3 times a day, instead of once for 10 minutes. Because of the heavy batteries, they can carry only about 2/3 of the weight in freight. They cannot drive as many miles and deliver as much freight --- which means needing MORE big rigs and MORE drivers and higher transportation costs and clogged highways. And more NEW inexperienced drivers to have accidents.
