Rivian was not one or two programs away from bankruptcy. Yes, making vehicles is a huge capex, but Rivian's cash gives it a huge advantage. VW's offer is just a bridge to calm investors down while Rivian gets to profitability, hopefully sooner. VW needs Rivian more than the other. VW is going to have to get out of China, trim down drastically and finally come down to reality of making EVs which by then would have been too late. "Software defined vehicle" aka a way for car companies to start a monthly subscription service for features that started out as included with the vehicle but will slowly be put behind a paywall so the car company can up their profits... we are already seeing the start of this with BMW and Cadillac
At the very end he goes "somehow, China learned to produce a software defined electric vehicle with a 30+% cost advantage". It's pretty simple really - strong subsidies, strong cost advantage at obtaining the rare earth metals needed to produce batteries, and cheap skilled labor compared to most developed countries. There's a reason why China is called the "workshop of the world"
This isn't meant to be a propaganda comment. There are still a lot of issues with China outside of the manufacturing sector, but anyone with even a basic understanding of economics could see why China has the advantage in the mfg sector.
It's extraordinary to realize that the whole Germany with 83 millions and a lot of engineers, but can't create a decent software system for (EV) cars. They shut down Cariad despite a huge investment in it.
Saying Rivian is losing $X per vehicle is very misleading. What it actually means is they have large fixed costs (like a manufacturing plant) they have to amortize over all the vehicles they sell. They simply haven’t (yet?) sold enough vehicles to reduce that cost to a manageable number per vehicle. Rivian’s profitability will come (or not) with the success or failure of three higher volume R2 and R3 plus partnerships. Exactly the same as Tesla prior to the Model 3 and Model Y.
@@Yutani_Crayven I'm a certified accountant and build assembly lines for a living. Not a whiff of cope here. Every large and small manufacturing concern has the same issue with fixed costs. The loss per vehicle that people are talking about is mostly people misunderstanding fixed cost amortization. Gotta buy a big expensive factory (cost >$2 billion in Rivian's case) that costs a lot to build and operate (fixed costs) whether they sell one vehicle or a million. Each vehicle gets a percentage of those costs. Sell more vehicles and the fixed cost per vehicle shrinks. Rivian hasn't sold a lot of vehicles to date - $2Billion / 50,000 is $40k per vehicle. They'll need to sell a whole bunch more if they want to stay in business. Will they? I have no idea though I wish them well.
From this it seems it was a better idea for Rivian to just focus on the tech and not sell whole cars. They could have been the industry standard and supplied to many other car makers. In any case, best of luck to them. It is about time cars got smart. And please add a computer scanner/checker feature in all the new cars that also show the error code on the screen. Why do we have to buy outside tools to scan our cars if the car is already generating the code? Just display it on the screen. This new 'unifying' tech design should solve this. Cheers.
An electrified old school VW van (myster machine style) would be so dope to see on the road. I bet a lot of Americans would go for the nostalgia and would be happy that Rivians tech is influencing it.
Wow. You mean to say that the market for a luxury SUV or Truck EV that isn't exactly ultra high end enough to warrant its price tag, but is more of an ultra niche upper middle class good has already reach market saturation and is financially struggling? Who would have known that spending hundreds of billions on making a car that appeals to .01% of the truck/suv market, but costs twice as much as an ICE, would fail to make profits.
Now look at Tesla. Starting out with the Roadster, which was even more of a niche car, then the Model S which was also out of reach for the average buyer. Tesla was bleeding money. But investors kept it afloat. Today it is a profitable car manufacturer producing affordable cars. Rivian is currently in that second phase. It has it's halo cars with the R1T and R1S, it has mass production vehicles with the Amazon delivery vehicle's and is now attempting to make that next leap into producing affordable cars for the mass market that should bring the company to profitability.

Many other legacy car manufacturers seem to do not even try in software-defined vehicles or quietly doing that behind closed doors (hi, Toyota!). In brief, VW tried to play in software openly and with significant commitment, and got a lot of critics, maybe even an unfair mount of it, when struggled with that.

I’m not so sure increased electronics and software is the way ahead. The American consumer is becoming price sensitive on vehicles and you can see some pretty expensive repairs on vehicles with complex electronics. I’m not saying that we should continue to refine a simple vehicle without moving forward and making progress, I just think some of the functions being put in the vehicles, need an examination of whether that’s really what people want or just what the manufacturer is providing to try and become more profitable. I’m going to point to Jeep as being almost unaffordable although they have definitely increased and luxury. Not too many people are buying $70,000 wranglers to take them off road these days so they’re getting further and further away from what those vehicles were originally designed for and the niche that they fit in.
"China figured out how to do it" Yeah, they also have been heavily subsidized by the government for the past decade, and rely on cheap Chinese labor at suppliers... But they didn't mention that part
Wait, at 9:50 this is completely wrong: all these small computers talk to others. Not all others, as some of them are on different networks, but of course they talk. How do you think your radio volume increases when you're driving faster ?
That's not the problem, they can all communicate and that's fine. What isn't is how many different ECUs need to communicate in order to do that, all of which are not made by the car manufacturer and none of which the car manufacturer can customize the software in. So you 1) Have higher costs because of more ECUs, 2) Have higher complexity, 3) Own NONE of the software that you need to control the car with, and 4) have no customizability with OTA updates like with Tesla or Rivian.
Rivian’s software is miles ahead of the traditional auto. In some ways, it’s better than Tesla.( Ignoring the Autonomous driving tech). Rivian’s software engineers are the best in the industry. This deal is a no brainer.
Electric won’t sell outside of major cities until you can get 1000km out of a charge . No one rural wants to wait and charge . Charging will need to be minutes not hours .
I recently did a couple of coast to coast road trips. Farms in Indiana were miles away from a gas station. Some farms had to resort to keeping their own gas reserves in tanks hoisted up in the air on wooden stilts. They could easily burn through 40 miles (round trip) just go fill up. Yet, every single one of those farms had electricity. Electric vehicles make even more sense for those rural communities. You don’t “wait and charge”, you charge overnight while you sleep.
God knows VW needs help in the software department. So this should be great for both of them. I don't know what Rivian needs to do to become profitable, but I've always been rooting for their success.
I think the partnership does not go far enough. If Rivian was a VW brand, they could take the MEB platform (VW ID.4, Audi Q4), build a Rivian looking body on top, and add their Software. Voila, 50.000$ Rivian that makes a profit. VW would get a foothold in the US market, which they have been trying since the original Beetle.
That's sorta of right. But it will cost more than $50k. Remember, 50k is not the average price of a new car. And I'm referring to ICE vehicle. EVs average 5-10k more.
How about building a car without all the fancy stuff. One that just runs , reliably for years and make it inexpensive. You can keep the heated seats and the back up cameras. I just want something inexpensive and reliable!!!
Low profit margins for whoever does this is the reason why. But I’m with you, lower the price by reducing unnecessary tech, and make it reliable. Best hope now is to buy an old Toyota
VW simply changing Rivian's name to Scout and changing goofy headlights to look like those on old Scouts would probably go a long way towards helping sales. And VW having their other divisions learn from Rivian what is effective as Rivian continues to do what they have been doing would be a great benefit to VW, something companys tend to fail at when merging. They tend to focus too much on saving money by making everyone do things the same way, sometimes scuttling better processes and parts or whole products they bought in favor of not making changes at other brands/companies that would of course be difficult, as all changes often are for people and companies, and require spending money.
I have done a lot of things in my life however getting a VW in 2022 was the WORST decision. I suffer daily because of this decision. Software issues, Car making noises, Car deciding what it wants to do. Trust me they need to fix their current issues or shut down.
Well nowhere the first time VW would make deal to adapt tech from somewhere else. New start ups might guard their tech like jealous mice, but old big car makers know their main asset isn't tech. Tech you can buy easily, what you can't buy easily is global operations chains. Literally tens and tens of factories around the world, whose buildings costs were amortized decades ago. VWs asset is "It is one of the few companies in the world, that can make 10m+ vehicles per year *in practice* ". Cars don't get smaller the more you make them, so large scale scale is an actual achievement and asset. So if Rivian has a good electronics architecture for network centric car (and network centric then allows it to be software centric, since you can send more complex messages over full network bus rather than just small CAN status messages), why wouldn't you buy it. They have the money, Rivian has the product. Khajit has wares, if you have coin. Decades of succesfull history means, VW has coin. Buy the design, give the tech package it to internal factory or external electronics contractor with "we want 10 million of each of the boxes per year, thank you" and on buying 10 millions one can bargain mercilessly.
Rivian needs to come out with a kit model. You buy a basic truck; power steering, AC and heat, radio that connects to your phone, 4 wheels and seats. You can add features as time goes along. Upgrades available at deal-ships or independent companies. Now affordable and upgradable
I see Rivians daily. Fairly common near me. My next door neighbor has one. Great vehicles. Yes the R1T and R1S are niche products but so are the Model S and X from Tesla. It’s the R2 and R3 that really will make or break Rivian as a car maker.
It's not making cars that makes money for car makers. :P It's parts, and servicing. If you can make a car for what you sell it at, you're doing well. Any profitability from manufacturing and sales is stupendous.
If I were trying to get something to replace my Expedition, R1S (second release) would be my pick. Verry nice look and features. I don't need something that big but it would have been an ideal pick for ALL EV option
What Volkswagen needs to do is just simply rebrand a Rivian truck to a Scout Model. If. Rivian was able to produce just about two hundred thousand more units then they stop losing money on each vehicle
Pretty sure Rivian is too custom for VWs economies of scale. Like sure "it's a scout". Except you maybe go look at say the wheel hubs "hey these bearings are from the supplier of Traton (VW Trucks and Busses), heavy duty commercial van wheel bearings. These springs..... from VW supplier, the shocks, from a VW deal with a shock maker. This door lock, the same as in VW passenger cars". There is oogles of such "insignifican't, surely that doesn't cost much parts", where one can go "When VW buys 9 million door lock sets, it gets them cheaper than Rivian buying 200k door lock sets". It's not just the production, but spares. Since if all VW doors use same lock core, well you don't have to stock the "Scout truck door lock", no you can just stock "the big size VW door lock" and maybe the "the small size VW door lock". Since company like VW... has to stock spares for decades.
Each feature having its own ECU? That is insane, but now I understand why everything is described as impossible, because such a chaos dump is nearly impossible to manage centrally.
Two struggling automakers are joining forces. Volkswagen, a German automotive giant facing financial challenges and seeking a strong foothold in the electric vehicle market, is merging with a failing EV startup. Last week, VW made the unprecedented announcement that it might be forced to close plants in Germany for the first time in its history. Good luck...
VW already has Rimac, so software an battery tech, they have it. The issue is to get into the US market, an also be able to make use of the partnership at will
I like the legacy approach better. Standarization is great for long term and right to repair. No gimmicks required, it's a car, it has to drive, not dance. I own an id4 2023 and I love it and the software is all I need.
no engines needed. there could literally be a car manufacturer in every town making a unique car. a frame, batteries, motors, wheels and brakes, less than a current self build ice car
I'm not sure how this works out for VW's vehicles, but anything that helps Rivian survive to make the next generation of more affordable EV SUV's is a great idea. Those vehicles are cool and in a market with less inflation and high interest rates, I think they'd be selling a lot more of them. Right now $70k is just too much for upper middle class consumers. But if you can get that price tag down to the high $50k low $60k range, the math of not having to buy gasoline helps you get the rest of the way to an EV conversion.
Not a good business strategy for two companies in trouble to set up a joint venture. It should be a successful company taking over a failing company with great assets, and neither of them has any great assets to speak of.
I guess beauty is in the eye of the beholder! I personally believe Rivian vehicles are the typical unattractive truck design with little features distinctive from truck designs offered by OEMs for the past 25 years!
Automakers have been putting firmware on vehicles for a long time - not software. They are different - one requires precision and stability while the other requires rgb LEDs and at least a bunch of bugs.
Honestly, I absolutely hate this “software defined vehicle” nonsense. How about you just focus that time and energy on making more affordable high quality cars.

Stellantis junk made in Mexico.
No, that's way too much cope. Don't do that to yourself.

The radio gets the speed off the CAN bus or LIN bus from from the Engine Control Unit.

VW Doesn't want to 'Reinvent' the wheel... Literally!

US can't compete with Chinese BYD so you try and have India compete against China for you? 😂 Weak
Why they encourage Hindu nationalist supporter Mahindra ?😂
@@siddharthgoyal4008BYD don’t have shxt, they live off Chinese subsidies. 😂
Otherwise they are in a loss with no profit.
Just let Rivian build the Scouts. They'd be amazing
Rivian is one of those companies that everyone wants to succeed. It even gets money from basically every big company like Amazon before and even then, it can’t gain profitability. Let’s hope VW’s help actually what they need to reach profitability and survive long-term.
As a person who looks at electric cars with skepticism, the only EV I would ever consider are those made by Rivian. I do hope they succeed and they can make more affordable cars down the road!
@@Fedex52738 Rivian EVs are cool, I will admit. Thing is I don’t trust the reliability and status as a new company just yet and I don’t know if VW will help in the reliability matter at least.
@@KNRS927 yeah I understand your concern and to be honest they are also some of my concerns as well. I hope Rivian doesn’t end the same path as Fisker and hopefully they can make sure to supply reliable parts so their trucks can last a very long time hopefully battery technology breaks through as well
@@Fedex52738 I kinda knew Fisker would fail from day 1, just because I didn’t trust a company founded by that guy. Rivian though, I love their cars but they just can’t get profitability yet even despite all the investments and money they’ve raised from big companies like Amazon and now VW. I feel now they have to get profitability, because it might be tough securing more big funding if Amazon and VW weren’t enough.
All in All a good Video, but one thing is a bit lets say "american" - VW developed the "ZFAS" System years ago, putting a lot of Systems together. "All of them are a blackbox and the code is not talking to other devices" is just plain wrong. Every System sends messages to other ECU's, some of the CAN BUS System even mirror these to act quicker or enable more features. This pictures drawn here is very wrong. The rest is quite a good one to watch.
We don't need all that garbage. I want a simple vehicle.
Tesla will produce one 2025.
Buy something old then
Speak for yourself
Sounds like it’s time for me to give up lender work and focus only on private appraisal work. Pretty clear they’re working towards eliminating the appraiser from the lending process.
A big mistake by VW. Rivian is doomed.
According to you…
