      I can't listen to The Wizard without thinking it's about a drug dealer "spreading his magic". Same with Behind the Wall of Sleep - always sounded to me like it's about a bad trip: "Deadly petals with strange power". These aren't super obvious, but you also have Fairies Wear Boots on Paranoid which is clearly about drug induced alucination!

    Metal in 00's and 2010's is history now too! And just as important for the future generations
    And so here's my addition and amendment
    Nu metal began to die out in the mid 00's, with relatively few bands, Slipknot and Korn being the two most important, surviving in relevance today. Slipknot and Korn, as well as the rising popularity of Emo in the mid to late 00's, influenced the new generation to write heavier and more emotional music.
    Metalcore, a genre that utilized screaming vocals, emo inspired crooning and heavy breakdowns, that mixed elements of extreme metal, emo hardcore, and even a little bit of glam, became the next big thing. Metalcore arose as the somewhat disputed front runner of the late 00's and the early to mid 10's with bands like Motionless in White, Asking Alexandria, August Burns Red, and Of Mice And Men.
    The extreme heavy sound of metalcore was pushed even further by bands like Suicide Silence, Chelsea Grin, Carnifex, and White Chapel, who all came to (anti)christen yet another new sub genre of metal, Deathcore.
    This era is unique, being the only time that extreme metal elements like screaming vocals were not just prominent, but popular.
    This aspect, and the distinctive, always somewhat dogged on, emo glam influence, gave metalcore and deathcore a bad reputation among older metal fans, but the kids ate it up. (Asking Alexandria was never metal! >:c)
    The two biggest game changers of the new millennium, Warped tour, and the internet, did a lot for the metal scene. It made the underground easy to find, at once making it no longer the underground, and making niche sounds more accessible. Tons and tons of niche scenes popped up during this time, taking the genre in more ways at once than it had ever been taken, for better or worse.
    One of these niche offshoots of metalcore was the new wave of progressive metal bands, Djent. Named after the sounds the guitar tone makes that many of these bands used, this genre took the fast and ferocious chugging of metalcore to new and interesting heights. Veil of Maya, Periphery, and the almighty Meshuggah, are credited with taking the new sound of metal as far as it could go.
    Today, it's unclear where metal will go for sure, but bands like Code Orange, Knocked Loose, and Kublai Khan, have been growing in popularity for their take on the metalcore formula, which emphasizes original hardcore influences more than Emo or Glam. (Rest in pain Emo!). These bands represent a new third wave of metalcore bands, looking to remain to pure and equal in the influences of their child subgenre, mixing riffs that could have come off a Motorhead album with break downs hard enough to give the skinheads of the 90's nosebleeds.
    Respectively, on the heavier side of things, bands like Rings of Saturn, Oceano, and Aversions Crown have given Deathcore some much needed innovation, opting for a more technical approach to writing, and utilizing themes of Lovecraftian cosmic existential horror.
    With Warped Tour ending this year, with emo being officially dead and buried, and with lots of the original Metalcore pioneers breaking up or fading from relevance, a new age is imminently approaching.

    For me,the birth of metal were in 60s, with songs like you really got me,helter skelter, born to be wild......than 4 legendary British bands came and developed it furthermore which we know as traditional heavy metal, single bass drum with a hard rock and blues influence.

    A 1971 review in Creem of the 1970 album "Kingdom Come" by Sir Lord Baltimore was the first ever mention of "heavy metal" as a style of music. That album was so ahead of it's time. Most of it is full of insane heavy riffing, but there's even a harpsichord song that's like the Bohemian Rhapsody type neo-classical rock ballad aesthetic.

      Yeah, if anything the NWOBHM were largely an underground kind of movement than a commercial one. The NWOBHM got the underground/DIY attitude from Punk but the sound from older bands like Sabbath, Priest and Deep Purple.

    • @thenoodledrop
      @thenoodledrop 6 років тому

      Joshua Ibarra I like to think of NWOBHM as the first combination of indie and metal. Especially with the raw lo fi sound of those records (except Def Leppard heh)

      James McGill, NWOBHM was a combination of Punk and Metal, not Indie. Indie Rock came to be in the mid to late 80s.
