Well, it partly did. Emo and Goth both diverged from Punk music, with Goth as a subgenre of Post-Punk and Emo as a byproduct of Hardcore Punk/Post-Hardcore. But now, they are pretty much their own thing.

It's not about "telling kids to "learn history and respect traditions"" but about how stupid is society again giving credit to some for something they didnt do and ignoring the credit the underground deserved after 30 years. Many of the mainstream "emo" bands from 2002 on are just playing regular pop music while wearing a haircut (not all of them). To me is as stupid as the music world and music media forgetting two decades of rather very well known bands before those.
Copping a style and bastardizing it aint punk rock.

I reluctantly watched this expecting to be annoyed at the inaccuracies...but I was surprised. This was pretty on point. I would only disagree with the general dismissal of "emo revival" but that's pretty minor. Of course there are important bands missing but it's a 5 minute video. You can't talk about every influential emo band in 5 minutes. Great job!

I suppose a lot of people still think they're emo bands, even though there's still emotive hardcore, Midwest emo, etc around. When emo hit the 00s, it became a whole new genre called emo pop punk. Those bands would fit into that category, especially their earlier albums. But they're not emo, they're emo pop punk and that's a different thing because it's a fusion of emo and pop punk.

I disagree with the fact that *NO ONE* likes being called emo. For me it’s the easiest way to describe my music taste/style in a way that people will understand.

I listen to legitimately anything that displays talent and heart (jazz, blues, rap, pop, metal [any kind], rock, punk, country, classical, and different types of instrumental music), but my favorite genre is emo. Sometimes I’ll be like nah I’m not emo (because I don’t look it or act it at all), but I don’t know how else to describe it

Emo music. Of the two reasons for the online moniker I use on UA-cam (since June 19, 2007) , one references the suicide of two 16-year old emo girls in Melbourne Australia in April 2007.
I was genuinely interested in learning about Emo and how it originated but the video is unwatchable. They thought it would be, funny I guess?, to give these characters weird voices to the point that I can only understand half of what they're saying.
