They were noticed by the mass media (based in London), so brought Goth to the attention of the media, but what's generally ignored is the importance of Leeds, Bradford, Huddersfield, Liverpool & Manchester to the UK scene, and the contribution of rock to the scene. As Brit who was a teen goth-ish in the 1980s I thought you guys did really well creating this video. To be honest I had not really realised how British/ European was - I had imagined that there were more US bands. One US band I do remember was The Cramps - their albums were sold in a lot of goth shops (in oxford anyway). Also, bands like The Southern Death Cult maybe deserve a mention - they became The Cult and their experiences in the US with the still-underground house scene influenced them a lot - maybe more than you guys realise. It's worth hunting some of their interviews as it will add an extra dimension. But yeah, really enjoyed this - cheers. (The reason I say goth-ish was that some of us dressed a bit goth but also were into other leftfield music as well - much electronic.
90s goth was mostly about a sub-scene of obscure European bands, tiny independent record labels and fanzines. I can think only of Swans and Current 93 as two bands that goths listened to and became popular later.
I had forgotten about The Merry Thoughts :) Yes, the 90s was a great decade for goth bands and for music projects within and beyond the goth scene, I remember for instance Sopor Aeternus' Dead Lovers Sarabande, so idiosyncratic and different, it was a good decade for weird music projects.
Lost me at the last part if it was meant to be taken seriously. The fact that aspects of goth culture have been assimilated into the mainstream and are now trendy is just a sign of how dead goth culture is. Same thing that happened to punk.
Pink Floyd didn't like being called "psychedelic rock" when they debuted with their first LP in 1967. I'm sure that was more so Syd Barrett's opinion of what was largely *his* music for the band at the time. I believe this carried after Syd in 1968 up until ~1980 when the band broke up.
Pook365 Who can blame him?? The second it was labeled and people started talking about it immediately lost its mystery which.... was the whole point....

Batman invented goth comics and Actually it was destined that Anakin invent C-3PO because like poetry it rhymes..."
A lot of dogmatic goths in the comments section. The video is about the goth subculture in the big sense of the word, not only the original goth rock genre which evolved. Even visual kei are goth today.
even though these girls on tiktok who listen to billie eilish and trap and call themselves goth exist, the real goths and any person with a brain will always be there to remind the world what goth really is.
Just a reminder that people are allowed to dress goth and also listen to music that you personally don’t care for. People who have the same taste in fashion don’t always have the same taste in music. While fashion and music are frequently linked, they’re not always joined at the hip, and some of these artists I see being dissed in the comments may have been inspired by the music listed in the video. I just watched an awesome video about a rapper who was inspired by Kate Bush; someone’s inspirations may not directly line up with the genre they end up writing in. TL;DR - People are allowed to like things even if you don’t like them. Be nice, for goodness sake.
People can dress in black or like a goth person would. That doesn't make them goth if they don't like the music. It makes them darkly inclined. If one Dresses punk and doesn't like punk music than the aren't punk. If someone Dresses black metal but but only likes rap it doesn't make them a metal head. One can dress in scrubs if they want, but that doesn't make them a nurse or Dr. The clothing doesn't make one goth, and goths will tell someone who isn't into the goth scene that they aren't goth.
The goth sub culture has been diluted with many misconceptions revolving around it by society (yes, most likely even by you, the person reading this). We've forgotten what goth was all about; dark fictions, the literature, rebellion, THE MUSIC(most importantly). Nowadays the kids like to play pretend and dress up. Little do they know they're just poorly imitating what they think they are. Edit: *Also this video is mostly inaccurate* and seemingly based off a standard view of what goth is. Whoever created this video wasn't looking deep enough into the subject, but merely surfacing with research. *(This is another reason why the goth culture is so messy today, people are poorly informed about it)*
And even by you. Goth is just a music subculture, it's not about rebellion. As for literature you are confusing goth and gothic as the same thing when it's not. Also goth isn't a fashion subculture or a state of mind.
You could have considered "Proto-Goth" songs and bands in the 60s 'Paint In Black' by The Rolling Stones lyrically 'I Hate You' , 'Complication' by The Monks 'Talk Talk', 'Talk Me Down', 'Bottom Of The Soul', 'Trouble', 'Come On In', 'You'll Love Me Again' by The Music Machine, especially considering their image at the time And for good measure, early Velvet Underground
I am a more traditional goth. I love the classical goth bands like Siouxsie and the Banshees, The Cure, The Cruxshadows, Alien Sex Fiend, The Sisters of Mercy, Skinny Puppy, and lots of other bands.
it's actually thanks to andi sexgang living at the visigoth towers in brixton, and ian astbury coined the term by calling him the gothic goblin, and calling the women who followed him as the goths. learn real music history.
While the gothic scene was popular in the 90s (I was in it,) NIN wasn't a contemporary gothic artist. More acts like London After Midnight, and Miranda Sex Garden. Nine Inch Nails fans were called "NINnies," as an insult in the scene. Mostly, an accurate video other than that, and the end.
But just because a bunch of purists who don't understand the connection between Industrial and Darkwave say it doesn't make it not true. They don't sound anything like the other bands but their early work did have an element of Darkwave in it.
@@tommythecat7752 I think he's stating that NIN simply were not a goth band. They were a dark sounding band that people stated were goth and that the mall goths gravitated towards. Funny enough it is around this time that goth began to end because record producers, journalists, black metal fans, emos etc misused the term which destroyed its meaning and identity. Even to this day goth is considered an insult even in nightclubs where they only play goth rock ha ha.
prying eyes WHAT!?!!? Nine inch nails isn’t a gothic band. Where you get your information from? Also what’s a gothic scene? you do know gothic and goth are two different things.
@@invader4life36 NIN are not goth because they're not goth rock. They're industrial. Goths listened to goth rock、grungers listened to grunge 、metal heads listen to metal. The music comes first then the subculture.

(The reason I say goth-ish was that some of us dressed a bit goth but also were into other leftfield music as well - much electronic.
joy division.... oh lord... i used to be obssesed with those guys
what happened? they're still just as great now as they were back then.
krimson Why you USED to? You downgraded taste in music too!? Like my friends!? Oh god no I am always sticking to them
krimson joy division will be an example what not to do when you’re eighteen if you fall in love
90s goth was mostly about a sub-scene of obscure European bands, tiny independent record labels and fanzines. I can think only of Swans and Current 93 as two bands that goths listened to and became popular later.
c93 never reached swans' level of popularity though.
Type O Negative? Even Coal Chamber leaned more towards gothic metal after their first album.
Philip Whitehead Type O Negative kicks so much ass, it made me shit blood.
Max Power Type of negative is one of the only bands that fused hardcover and goth well. Twitching tongues is like a modern version of TON.
I fully support this and welcome more videos like it for other genres, as well.

A brief history of punk
Lost me at the last part if it was meant to be taken seriously. The fact that aspects of goth culture have been assimilated into the mainstream and are now trendy is just a sign of how dead goth culture is. Same thing that happened to punk.
Same thing for many MANY genres of music. Face it: musical subcultures are a dying breed if not dead already.
IT was all sarcasm as of NIN being mentioned

Robert Smith is God not Goth
Pink Floyd didn't like being called "psychedelic rock" when they debuted with their first LP in 1967. I'm sure that was more so Syd Barrett's opinion of what was largely *his* music for the band at the time. I believe this carried after Syd in 1968 up until ~1980 when the band broke up.

Cocteau Twins. Thanks for mentioning them.

I’m a mall goth who loves his nü-metal but Souxie and the Cure is love 💕
"Mall goth" is a pejorative term we goths made to make fun of you all
I swear I flipping love these and who ever animates these
I appreciate that they played the darker side of Cure and Ministry.
Me too! So happy they went with one hundred years. Love your channel btw, the video where your dad narrated was hilarious. I'm subscribed on my other account
Before I scroll down to read the comments for a few minutes, I'm just wondering how many "Actually" people there are. You know, those people who start off their comments with, "Actually... Batman invented goth comics and Actually it was destined that Anakin invent C-3PO because like poetry it rhymes..."
_Actually_ ...
:3
A lot of dogmatic goths in the comments section. The video is about the goth subculture in the big sense of the word, not only the original goth rock genre which evolved. Even visual kei are goth today.

SFBayArea Class of 1984 here. Very entertaining and quite accurate. Chefs kiss for the Windows blue screen of death at the end. 😹
Loved this. The animation, expressions and mannerisms were spot on. I felt like I was in a class I hated again. 😂
I like the hijabi among the audience, thank you for including us 🥰
Just fell in love with The Cure, I’m totally addicted ✌🏻
This is one of my favourite ever UA-cam videos now. Thank you for this phenomenal creation
I love how the infamous Unknown Pleasures shirt just keeps reappearing throughout the video
even though these girls on tiktok who listen to billie eilish and trap and call themselves goth exist, the real goths and any person with a brain will always be there to remind the world what goth really is.
And get called an elitist gatekeeper and a poser for doing so! 🤣
@@KimiChanJapan True.
Fuckin love The Cure, Joy Division, Siouxie & The Banshees, Bauhaus, & Marilyn Manson
I love how u made this video educational and funny💀
thank u so much I've been wanting to know about goth history for months
The goth sub culture has been diluted with many misconceptions revolving around it by society (yes, most likely even by you, the person reading this). We've forgotten what goth was all about; dark fictions, the literature, rebellion, THE MUSIC(most importantly).
Nowadays the kids like to play pretend and dress up. Little do they know they're just poorly imitating what they think they are.
Edit: *Also this video is mostly inaccurate* and seemingly based off a standard view of what goth is. Whoever created this video wasn't looking deep enough into the subject, but merely surfacing with research. *(This is another reason why the goth culture is so messy today, people are poorly informed about it)*
How would one get better informed about the goth subculture?
@@sagepebbles2261 why y´all styled like how we grew up
And even by you. Goth is just a music subculture, it's not about rebellion. As for literature you are confusing goth and gothic as the same thing when it's not. Also goth isn't a fashion subculture or a state of mind.
@@sagepebbles2261 look up kai decadence or acuumortis. Best goth UA-camrs imo.
I love listening to the Cocteau Twins and This Mortal Coil.
This actually should've mentioned how christian death was a huge contribution not a later band
You could have considered "Proto-Goth" songs and bands in the 60s
'Paint In Black' by The Rolling Stones lyrically
'I Hate You' , 'Complication' by The Monks
'Talk Talk', 'Talk Me Down', 'Bottom Of The Soul', 'Trouble', 'Come On In', 'You'll Love Me Again' by The Music Machine, especially considering their image at the time
And for good measure, early Velvet Underground
I've always looked at Goths as wannabe vampire copycats.
The outro music sounds like Black Metal without guitar distortion.

Warning: Flashing Lights at 2:13
No mention of the father of Goth, Dave Vanian? He decided to be a vampire when everyone else was dressing as punks
1:00 what song is that?
As a huge NIN fanboy, I was super happy when they mentioned Pretty Hate Machine. Trent helped make goth sexy in 1989.
Now we got boring witchy goths that listen to Chelsea Wolfe and flirt with armchair occultism and essential oils. No disrespect to CW tho.
chelsea wolfe is my shortie
chelsea wolfe is good though lol
Yeah, hence why I said no disrespect to CW
I am a more traditional goth. I love the classical goth bands like Siouxsie and the Banshees, The Cure, The Cruxshadows, Alien Sex Fiend, The Sisters of Mercy, Skinny Puppy, and lots of other bands.
what exactly is "armchair occultism"? is it a phrase for people who aren't serious about it or something?
binge watching this channel i love this!

Everyone one always forgets about New Romantic/ Blitz Kids which were part of it, especially in the 80s in England.
Gothabilly is what "gothed up" the 80's rockabilly revival, deathrock is more of a missing link between punk and goth.
Jack in Stripes creating new sub-genres are we?
Nice inclusion of Ministry - Every Day is Halloween, coinciding with the fact that this video was published on 31 October ;)
@@shikenkanbaby Yeah that's fair enough
prying eyes WHAT!?!!? Nine inch nails isn’t a gothic band. Where you get your information from? Also what’s a gothic scene? you do know gothic and goth are two different things.
@@invader4life36 NIN are not goth because they're not goth rock. They're industrial. Goths listened to goth rock、grungers listened to grunge 、metal heads listen to metal. The music comes first then the subculture.
