Great. I think the "best knot" is the one that you can easily and reliably tie over and over again. Sounds like the Uni and modified Uni are perfect for you. I tie them both often too.
Just started fishing with braided and this knot is very nice, pretty easy to learn after a few attempts of having the loop/tag end too small. I will continue to practice!
Worth a second comment since I'm watching it again ... Coincidentally, I'm teaching my son to tie knots so I can fish instead of repeatedly tying on tackle for kids! My uni knot method isn't the easiest to demonstrate. Yours is very easy though. I'm so sending him this video! Also going to get some practice in with your way. Probably the cleanest method I've ever seen for a uni.
Thanks. One of the hardest parts of teaching a kid to fish is spending all of your time tying knots and getting snags out. Great idea to practice knot tying with him.
Go for the good braid from the beginning. I hated braid at first because I tried a couple of cheap kinds and they were terrible. Super loud in the rod guides and they casted like crap. I tried Sufix 832 braid and was finally convinced that braid was worth the switch. That's all I use now from 6lb to 50lb. There are other good ones too for sure but I've stuck with the Sufix. alnk.to/8EJm9AE
@@FishingwithNat Thanks for the info Nat, greatly appreciated. When it states 20lb and 6lb mono equivalent, I assume that is just the diameter of the line. Is that correct? I figure 20lbs of braid is 20lbs of mono. and yes, I am new to this. 😉 I picked up some Spiderwire during Prime Days to try out.
I've developed a style for tying the uni knot that I've never seen before, I just kind of worked it out. The idea being that the line parts - tag end, loop, yada - doesn't get away from you in wind, and it makes it easy to tie in the dark. I figured this way out because after watching dozens of uni knot videos, I couldn't find a way that I didn't have to fiddle fart around with loose stuff that got mangled by wind, and required intently staring at it - which is HARD in 3 foot seas... Your way sir - very well may be even better than mine. It seems like it'd be easier to do a cleaner job under all but the roughest conditions. It only took me 8 years to find this video! :D
Mono was able to contrast well with the background compared to braid. This knot also works well with all kinds of line, even though it's particularly good with braid.
It will work with any kind of line. It is a modification of the original Uni knot that is better for braid because of the extra pass through the lure eye and the additional wraps.
Either live worms or a tiny plastic swimbait are both excellent for bluegills. The live worms will catch any size bluegill. Plastic swimbaits tend to catch the bigger ones.
Bite offs. That's been a nightmare for me. I've lost numerous big fish and I'm not sure why, but the line rubbing across their teeth makes sense. I've been using 30 lb braided line. I've never used a leader before, but I think it could solve my problem. What kind do you use, and how do you use them? I'd really appreciate your help. Thank you.
@@Crackermac7 Braid doesn't perform well against sharp teeth. Mono or fluoro lines do well, or steel/titanium is even better. Check out my 4min video on leaders for more info and tips: ua-cam.com/video/oUZEDod8Ehs/v-deo.html
You can use it with any type of line. Some knots work well with mono/fluoro but not with braid because it's too slick, but any good braid knot can be used with other types of line too.
I find the two turns going through the eye will overlap 100% of the time, it's very difficult to keep them parallel. Do you think keeping them parallel is necessary?
A fisherman's knot has a hard time tightening up with thick lines, and will slip with thin braided lines. This knot is much easier and more reliable in either of those situations. I'm a big fan of simplicity but there are definitely some knots that shine with certain applications.
Thank you. The Unit Knot is the easiest to tie for my hands and I'm glad the modified uni isn't complicated at all.

Perfect. It's my favorite knot for braid.

Thanks for all these great videos. I am learning a lot from them. I am starting my journey into braided line this weekend.

@@TGormania Yes, that means it has the strength of 20lb but the same diameter as 6lb monofilament.

I'm glad it was helpful to you! I find this way easy to tie in the wind or even while bouncing around Lake Michigan in a kayak.
These videos are so helpful! Thank you so much!
Great to hear - you're welcome!
Easy to understand. Thanks
Great!
The whopper plopper is the 🐐 best lure I've ever thrown
It's a fun one to throw for sure
Great video. Very helpful...thank you.
I'm glad it was helpful. Thanks for the comment.
Great tutorial 😊
Thanks
Trilene knot and then 2 over hand knots, works good
Sounds like another good option
if showing a braid knot, why use hard to see mono?
Mono was able to contrast well with the background compared to braid. This knot also works well with all kinds of line, even though it's particularly good with braid.
ahh thankyou!
You're welcome!
I needed that
Thanks. Glad it was helpful!
AKA Fish 'n Fool Knot. Why it should be good only for braided line, please? I use it also for fluoro line with great success.
It will work with any kind of line. It is a modification of the original Uni knot that is better for braid because of the extra pass through the lure eye and the additional wraps.
What’s the Best hook and Bait to use to catch blue gills?
Either live worms or a tiny plastic swimbait are both excellent for bluegills. The live worms will catch any size bluegill. Plastic swimbaits tend to catch the bigger ones.
@@FishingwithNat okay Ty!
@@Y2YZ1 Good luck!
Cant i just make a regular uni knot for my braided Line?
You can but it may slip out. The modified Uni holds better with braided lines. You can get away with a regular uni for heavier braids though.
Hey nat, I use a metal leader to avoid bite offs, is this knot good to use on the swivels that come with em?
Yes

I think it's best to keep them as parallel as possible to avoid one loop from smashing/cutting into the other loop.
So the ‘modified’ bit is just twice through the hook eye instead of once…..correct?🤔
Twice through the hook eye and more wraps.
Why do some double it through the eye and then do everything the same just with double the line?
Passing the line twice through the eye greatly reduces slippage of the knot.
@@FishingwithNat Thanks
Isn't a uniknot where you push it doubled through the eye and do a half square knot and loop it over your hook 🤔
I think you're thinking of a Palomar knot. I did a video on that one too. ua-cam.com/video/iN3WANO58m4/v-deo.html
I’d be there for an hour trying to tie that. You’d hear me cussin from 100 miles away
I find this one to be pretty easy to tie. A regular Uni is easier but not as secure with braided lines.
I still have problems with the knots 😢
Keep practicing and you'll get it.
Me too😅
Ask somebody to show you in the flesh. It’s really quite easy to copy then. Somehow footage of it makes it seem harder! 🤔
Lost my damn whopper plopper on a bush after 4 casts.
Ah, crap. Those rotten, lure-stealin' bushes! I know how that goes.
I dont get it😅😅😅😅
Keep trying! You'll get it
Who comes up with this stuff? Just tie a fisherman's knot and get the bait in the water.
A fisherman's knot has a hard time tightening up with thick lines, and will slip with thin braided lines. This knot is much easier and more reliable in either of those situations. I'm a big fan of simplicity but there are definitely some knots that shine with certain applications.
But you r using line not braid
Correct. As I said in the beginning of the video, I just used fluorocarbon line so you could see it better.
Just lost my a lure on this not idk what happened came to see if I was doing it right but who knows $10 bucks down the drain tho 😪
I wonder if you tied a regular Uni knot, which can sometimes come undone with braided lines because they can be pretty slippery.
You don’t wet braided line
I still wet it, usually with lake/river water.
No you don't have to wet braid, even though I do, tie your knots at home and break them. Test all the knots you use at home and not with a big fish.
