I had the misfortune of discovering who MGK was very early on in his career, even before he really started putting music out. I know someone personally who follows him religiously and he would praise the man to hell and back on Facebook even way back from his super underground days. He even got engaged at one of MGK’s early shows and got pulled up on stage to do so (that marriage went to hell btw). He would not shut up about the guy as he made it a mission to make the guy a household name. He got super annoying with it and as a result, I probably found out about MGK before most people did and it’s not a musician discovery I’m proud of.

Out of all the sub genres of Punk.... Pop Punk and Emo are incredibly vocal driven. Even the band's I cannot stand personally, it's not because of their lack of vocal talent. It's so bizarre that anyone could think those two subgenres have a lower standard of singing.

I feel like this about a lot of acts that get billed as “alternative” nowadays. It’s too slick, it’s too polished, there’s no roughness around the edges in the music, the aesthetic/presentation, etc
I feel like a lot of the criticisms of MGK & his music, while well deserved, aren't unique to him or his music. It feels like a lot of these issues have been bubbling below the surface for years with other musicians that collectively we've just kinda ignored for whatever reason. I know I'm not well versed in hip-hop, & I'd gladly receive any comments providing a bit more insight, but for me I look at an artist like Kanye & am just kinda confused why he gets a pass despite his awful behaviour & spotty music. For a more relevant example, I still see a lot of love for Brand New & Daughters, the latter of which I like quite a lot, but the general consensus around those groups isn't marred by the behaviour of the frontmen because the music is pretty good. I guess I find it a bit shameful that we're not as critical of these acts but can collectively rally together to dump on a well-deserved, if ultimately insignificant target.
Im really glad you brought up all his suspicious comments about minors. While he's a bad musician, that's not the worst because not everyone is musically gifted, and that's ok. And you could make the argument that at least some people can enjoy his music. But his comments on minors are absolutely disgusting and nobody with these views should have a large teen audience that adores him

At first I thought MGK's transition into pop punk would be good for the genre since mainatream interest in rock music was pretty much dead by the late 2010's. Then I heard some of his stuff from Tickets to My Downfall and realized I'd be happy with rock staying dead in the mainstream if it meant more albums like that. It sounded like a souless parody of a Blink 182 album. Nothing to write home about. The fact that he has the audacity to go after talented and respected musicians like Eminem and Corey Taylor is laughable.

As much as it's usually a bad thing, MGK is a prime example of why *some* gatekeeping is necessary. Sure, the community elders don't always deserve respect. Sure, sometimes an older community needs young energy to kick it out of its laziness. Sure, outsiders can revitalise a tiring community. But that's not why MGK is doing those things. He's walked into a community he doesn't respect for financial gain, and started demanding they do everything his way. Or rather, tells everyone that they're doing it wrong only in order to put himself above them. He doesn't want to contribute to the community, he only wants the community to benefit him and revolve around him. The kind of person who needs to be kept out of communities not out of "purity", but to stop them tearing them down.
I disagree. I don’t think MGK wants the scene to revolve around him, because he doesn’t really belong to the scene in the first place, which is main reason why there’s so much gatekeeping going on. I think MGK is trying to fit himself into the scene without knowing what that means. Being a rockstar doesn’t mean being a rebellious asshole. He’s trying to pull off this whole rockstar pose by intentionally being a dick and pissing people off. He’s trying to be the new Johnny Rotten basically. I tried listening to MGK, and when I did, I felt like Stan Marsh in the "You're Getting Old" episode of South Park. MGK sounded like shit. I felt the same way when I listened to Kid Rock and Trapt.

Literally the only thing I like about MGK is the design of his signature guitar. But it's not worth a thousand bucks. You could literally make that guitar yourself for a fraction of that price by getting a Telecaster kit and giving it Tom DeLonge Strat specs and a basic paint job.
I guess it's cool that he's playing a part in getting younger kids into pop punk, but that's basically where any respect I might have for MGK ends. I've always found him to be obnoxious. Pop punk deserves better.
I never liked MGK in the first place especially the fact that the whole blood thing he does with his girlfriend Megan Fox where they drink each other's blood although not directly but still that freaks me out. The reason why lady Gaga’s outfits were different, was because everything she wore had a meaning and was strategically planned out. She knew what she wanted to wear and how she was going to wear it. Lady Gaga’s outfits are an artistic class act (most of them). Meanwhile MGK is an opportunist who will do anything or wear anything for attention. On the come up in rap, he had a pretty decent following locally, even before his big track Wild Boy, & even after had a pretty big fanbase. & a one point was anti industry, anti authority, didn’t want to sell out to keep his authenticity, but seemed like once he switched over to the pop/punk genre, all that authenticity went straight out the window. Tickets to my Downfall was the biggest blink 182 cover band shit I’ve ever heard & of course all his fanboys & fangirls love it. The thing that really set me off, was when he had the audacity to say that he revived pop/punk from the dead. The pop/punk scene was doing A okay without MGK, but his ego has overtaken his entire being that he actually believed that statement. But sadly with the success of both his albums, looks like he won’t be leaving the scene anytime soon. I put him in a new category of music called “Midlife Crisis Pop/Punk” Also. Sorry, but 10 is not enough. I'm 💯 metalhead and he should stick to rap. I was in an extremely abusive situation and I was in 8th grade and my boyfriend was a freshman in college. He was 19 and I was only 13. I lived with him and his family. I was just so tired of being hit with the belt buckle. It was all to my advantage. I went from getting C's and D's to getting straight A's. I had a 3.9 grade average.

I recently watched MGK's life in pink documentary out of curiosity (just to see if he is as much of an arsehole in his own doc), but was surprised to see a man whining and blaming everyone and everything around him for the reception he receives from people. I had the misfortune of discovering who MGK was very early on in his career, even before he really started putting music out. I know someone personally who follows him religiously and he would praise the man to hell and back on Facebook even way back from his super underground days. He even got engaged at one of MGK’s early shows and got pulled up on stage to do so (that marriage went to hell btw). He would not shut up about the guy as he made it a mission to make the guy a household name. He got super annoying with it and as a result, I probably found out about MGK before most people did and it’s not a musician discovery I’m proud of.

Out of all the sub genres of Punk.... Pop Punk and Emo are incredibly vocal driven. Even the band's I cannot stand personally, it's not because of their lack of vocal talent. It's so bizarre that anyone could think those two subgenres have a lower standard of singing.

I feel like a lot of the criticisms of MGK & his music, while well deserved, aren't unique to him or his music. It feels like a lot of these issues have been bubbling below the surface for years with other musicians that collectively we've just kinda ignored for whatever reason.
I know I'm not well versed in hip-hop, & I'd gladly receive any comments providing a bit more insight, but for me I look at an artist like Kanye & am just kinda confused why he gets a pass despite his awful behaviour & spotty music. For a more relevant example, I still see a lot of love for Brand New & Daughters, the latter of which I like quite a lot, but the general consensus around those groups isn't marred by the behaviour of the frontmen because the music is pretty good. I guess I find it a bit shameful that we're not as critical of these acts but can collectively rally together to dump on a well-deserved, if ultimately insignificant target.

Literally the only thing I like about MGK is the design of his signature guitar. But it's not worth a thousand bucks. You could literally make that guitar yourself for a fraction of that price by getting a Telecaster kit and giving it Tom DeLonge Strat specs and a basic paint job.

Lady Gaga’s outfits are an artistic class act (most of them). Meanwhile MGK is an opportunist who will do anything or wear anything for attention. There is no careful planning in what he wears, no classy/shocking execution, and no message. He just wears what he wears for the attention alone. That’s the difference between Lady Gaga and MGK. One does it because they genuinely love haute couture fashion and shock art. While the other one just wants to be seen. I bet you MGK can’t name atleast 3 designers who’s creation he wore.

MGK is the definition of an artist who sold out. On the come up in rap, he had a pretty decent following locally, even before his big track Wild Boy, & even after had a pretty big fanbase. & a one point was anti industry, anti authority, didn’t want to sell out to keep his authenticity, but seemed like once he switched over to the pop/punk genre, all that authenticity went straight out the window. Tickets to my Downfall was the biggest blink 182 cover band shit I’ve ever heard & of course all his fanboys & fangirls love it. The thing that really set me off, was when he had the audacity to say that he revived pop/punk from the dead. The pop/punk scene was doing A okay without MGK, but his ego has overtaken his entire being that he actually believed that statement. But sadly with the success of both his albums, looks like he won’t be leaving the scene anytime soon. I put him in a new category of music called “Midlife Crisis Pop/Punk”

He was 19 and I was only 13. I lived with him and his family. I was just so tired of being hit with the belt buckle. It was all to my advantage. I went from getting C's and D's to getting straight A's. I had a 3.9 grade average.

I recently watched MGK's life in pink documentary out of curiosity (just to see if he is as much of an arsehole in his own doc), but was surprised to see a man whining and blaming everyone and everything around him for the reception he receives from people. He's like that kid at school who'd go around trash talking and then when a kid smacks them they run crying to the teacher like "It's not my fault! I didn't do anything!". Dude needs to take some more responsibility for his actions and how those actions affect his impressionable fans
