I would have to assume that the Western phrases, "Men are pigs," and, "He was a total pig," probably originate from Circe turning some portion of Odysseus's men into pigs during the Odyssey.
Also the generally negative perception of pigs as ugly, stupid and generally disgusting and even violent creatures; stereotypes also heavily associated with men. It's totally false since pigs can actually be cute, have comparable intelligence to dogs, and are fairly clean and docile creatures when looked after as pets, but the common perception of pigs mostly stems from wild pigs and pigs kept as livestock. Because it's a lot easier to kill something and turn it into bacon to eat when you think of it as something negative. As for the association with men? No, that's accurate. And I say this as a man. We are pigs. Hell, some people even think we taste like pigs.
So if we assume that it comes from the oral stories that got compiled (and wasn't just thought up for the written copy), that would make the idea behind that particular expression over three thousand years old? I'd buy that. Hell, even if it was only put down in writing that's still 2800-ish years.
@@Brutalyte616 most of the stereotypes come from wild pigs, more commonly called boar which are dirty violent ( not stupid and ugly is dependent on the person) Though you are correct when kept as pets, the are also very adaptable and hardy animals they literally created a new type of weapon just to hunt them an it has been shown thar escaped pigs will gain longer tusks and hair
Fun fact: The Journey to the West is actually relatively modern despite being very deeply rooted in the eastern media now days. The novel was released somewhere around late 16th century meaning it's contemporary to William Shakespeare's work.
So i looked it up, apparently the whole deal with the demon and the princess being reincarnations of heavenly spirits that were in love in heaven at the same time as the princess being a kidnapping victim makes a lot more sense in context. Apparently, when that female heavenly spirit reincarnated into human form, her memories got a bit... Lost. And the demon did not take that very well leading to him kidnapping the princess who happened to be the reincarnation of that heavenly spirit. So reincarnation amnesia is the reason why the story was so weird there with the princess being simultaneously a kidnapping victim and somehow also the incarnation of a heavenly spirit that just so happened to be genuinely in love with the demon when he was also a heavenly spirit.
did she even wanted a rescue? because she only talks about letting her father know about her situation, the whole "rescue mission" seems more like a decision the king took on his own.
The only reason Pigsy went and got Wukong is because the horse wouldn't let him leave. His first idea was to run off and go back home and not deal with any of this shit.
The demon didn't know that the dragon who attacked him was Tripitaka's horse, so turning back into horse form and hiding out in the stable was the safest option once he was too injured to fight any more. Also, the dragon acts like a normal horse most of the time because he's under orders from Kuan Yin to, well, act as Tripitaka's horse. He's not allowed to make the journey too easy for the same reason that Monkey isn't supposed to just jump Tripitaka straight to the monastery even though he can jump to the ends of the universe. I would say the dragon horse is more useful than Pigsy. For one thing, he is literally carrying Tripitaka, and we all know that if Tripitaka were walking the journey would take three times longer than it already does. Also, Pigsy was totally ready to bail, and the only reason he went to go find Monkey is because the dragon horse made him do it. The dragon horse doesn't actually do much, but he's really the most steadily reliable of Tripitaka's disciples. Pigsy's a lot more active, but he also far more likely to screw things up out of laziness or ego.

But for book Wukong he’s trying to fill a hole inside of him. He wants enlightenment and to make himself whole. And Pigsy is in awe of what Wukong was willing to leave behind in the first place. Pigsy misses home a lot in the book but Monkey never once complains. Because Wukong GENUINELY wants to be a better person and reach enlightenment. Okay to say two things in the horses defense (from what I’ve seen of him from OSP) 1. While he might not have as many uses as Pigsy, Pigsy is also actively detrimental to the group at times while the horse isn’t. Horse won’t save the day but he won’t ruin it either. 2. Pigsy might have been the one to get Monkey but he only did it because Horse forced him to. If it wasn’t for the Horse Pigsy would have quit here and the Journey would have been finished.
To Aurier and anyone interested, there are actually abridged translations of Journey to the West that make for an easier read. One that I read and recommend is Monkey King by Julia Lovell. The style of writing is crafted to suit a modern audience more so for those that don't feel like reading the 2000 pages of the original (Monkey King is only about 300+ pages long), I recommend that^^
But if you're wanting the audiobook, I recommend the Arthur Waley translation (which doesn't show up in search results for JttW since it goes by "Monkey"). The narrator for the Julia Lovell translation is not good, while Monkey has Kenneth Williams who is a really talented actor and narrator.
"Everyone can just fly! Is that a thing now!?" I forget when, but I distinctly remember feeling like that in Bleach. It was once a huge deal that Ichigo came in with flight equipment, but later on EVERONE was hving sword duels in the sky.
all the disciples and the horse can fly, the reason none of them just pick up Tripitaka and just fly to Buddha is because that would literally be too easy. flying to the end in an hour is not much of a PILGRIMAGE.
i believe the reference to calling someone a pig wasnt from there. although journey to the west old enough to roll any rumor cross over the world by now pepole use to relate bad behaviour as greed and gluttony as pig-like behaviour who ignore the world just to find another meal also turned to call selfish person who think only about themself pig from the same reason.. thats i believe why the term pig to a person
nobody flies to budha's monastery from the start instead of taking the long journey because it is supposed to be a challenge to make the journey to prove you are worthy
And Tripitaka's commonly used name in real life, Xuanzang Sanzang, is read as Genjō Sanzō in Japanese. Kinda interesting that 奘 and 蔵 rhyme in both Mandarin and Japanese. (Xuanzang is the name he took when he became a monk, Sanzang is a byname that often gets used with his monk name; iirc, in JttW, the fictional Xuanzang is called Tang Sanzang, or Tō Sanzō in Japanese)
If I remember right, Monkey says that human bones are denser than demon bones. So carrying Sanzang (Tripitaka) by cloud doesn't work because he's too heavy. 5/30/23
You seen to like Sandy a lot so here is fun fact from his past, i don't know if this is what got him banished to the river, but the bead necklace he originally wears is made from nine skulls of his master that he eate all nine reincarnations off and now wears and play with when bored
“Hundred Flowers Shame” basically means “so hecking pretty that every flower that sees her feels really inadequate”. A less literal, more grammatically correct way to translate it would be “She Whose Beauty Shames All Flowers”.
To ne fair on the dragon horse, he literally carries the team. He needs his rest and that rest will come when Tripitaka is not on the horse (ie. Kidnapped or asleep)
Perhaps the metaphor is that after the base urges (Pigsy) lead the enlightenment-seeker (Tripitaka) astray, it leads to the mind (Sun Wukong) having a breakdown. The unthinking follower (Sandy) can do nothing on his own, and honestly the will (horse) can’t either. However, the will CAN get the other parts motivated & get things back on track when the whole thing falls apart.

The reason there seem to be lots of "Immortals" is that they are not immortal in the Western "God" sense; but that they are Sages (Wise Men) that are often become Spiritually Immortal when they are revered as Minor Gods as Honorary Members of the Chinese Heavenly Bureaucracy after their Corporeal Deaths.
12:11 Wukong is far from a Mary Sue. He's OP, yes, but he often doesn't win fights, and has been injured several times already. A Mary Sue is basically a character that never struggles/never loses.
The horse does not help much beyond being a horse, but at least he doesn't cause any problems, so he's a net plus. Piggsy's ratio if helping verses causing problems is not exactly in his favor....

Honestly, for Blue, a lot of the History Hijinks are good. Also, Red's Pride Tales and Blue's History Makers on Sappho will be great when Pride Month Roles around. Stranger in a Strange Land is good for Deep Thoughts with Himeline. And there are some early gems of OSP's history in the Shakespeare videos, while the Animated videos of their streams show the team just hanging out and having fun (plus the line of "My Hubris!"). We're Sorry is good, while the De-Vine series always gets a laugh out of me, though you might need some familiarity with Red's designs for different mythological beings.
Honestly in this chapter I really didnt like Pigsy and Tripitaka. Like you keep getting saved by one guy and you dont even attempt to trust him even a little, while Pigsy makes unnecessary problems between them. What annoys me is him using the chant so much on sun wukong. Like if Wukong went on rampages I can understand using it to stop him and talking to him about it later or if Wukong were to attakc him, but if its a life and death situation... Like Tripitaka doesnt do anything if Wukong kills Demons but if its human murderes then its forbidden, which is stupid.
I’m gonna say pigsy is less helpful than the horse for the main fact that pigsy causes more problems than he fixes. The horse may not help much but at least he doesn’t cause problems
in ep 2 you skipped over Tripataka's backstory a little bit with the tracking That's where the Cicada part comes from. (at least it seemed like you skipped it when you had the time stamp issue)
Fun fact: The Original manga/anime Dragonball (pre-Z) was inspired by The Journey to the West. I don't mean just the Son Goku/Son Wukong parallel I mean the entire plot more or less mirrored this story.
I’ve never seen a full episode of Konosuba, but I have seen enough small videos of it to say this: The horse will ALWAYS be better than Aqua because it isn’t annoying, doesn’t expect everyone to worship it and do everything it demands, it doesn’t try to sabotage anyone, and it doesn’t throw a tantrum whenever something doesn’t go it’s way.

17:45 It never ceases to amaze me how many reactors don't use adblock.
Some just want the channels they are reacting to to get the add revenue.
@@gokbay3057 And sometimes add revenue just doesn't go to the creator because YT deems them unfit to be monetized, yet puts adds there anyway so they can get add money.
🤣🤣🤣🤣 *LMAO!!! The look on Airier's Face!!!*
You'll love her take on Beowulf. Not dry or hard to digest.
all the disciples and the horse can fly, the reason none of them just pick up Tripitaka and just fly to Buddha is because that would literally be too easy. flying to the end in an hour is not much of a PILGRIMAGE.
Just wait until you get to part nine. That’s pure hilarity! XD
Cant remember, is that the one with the pregnancy water?
@@synderthmc yes.
It’s, uh... too gross to be actually funny.
“Kk” is an evolution of ok
i believe the reference to calling someone a pig wasnt from there. although journey to the west old enough to roll any rumor cross over the world by now
pepole use to relate bad behaviour as greed and gluttony as pig-like behaviour who ignore the world just to find another meal
also turned to call selfish person who think only about themself pig from the same reason..
thats i believe why the term pig to a person
I want at the end of any long explanation for Wukong to show up and just say: "And I'm a monkey!"
nobody flies to budha's monastery from the start instead of taking the long journey because it is supposed to be a challenge to make the journey to prove you are worthy
No you are right Sun Wukong's name in japanese is Son Goku
And Tripitaka's commonly used name in real life, Xuanzang Sanzang, is read as Genjō Sanzō in Japanese. Kinda interesting that 奘 and 蔵 rhyme in both Mandarin and Japanese. (Xuanzang is the name he took when he became a monk, Sanzang is a byname that often gets used with his monk name; iirc, in JttW, the fictional Xuanzang is called Tang Sanzang, or Tō Sanzō in Japanese)
wokong is goku, tripitaka is bulma, pigsey is oolong, sandy is yamcha and the horse is puar
The horse got Yamcha-ed.
Pigsy went and got Goku. Yeah, we heard you.
[Innocent Whistling]
Even the best pieces of literature from throughout history can't escape having plot holes here and there.
If I remember right, Monkey says that human bones are denser than demon bones. So carrying Sanzang (Tripitaka) by cloud doesn't work because he's too heavy.

17:54 🤣🤣🤣🤣 *LMAO!!! The look on Airier's Face!!!*
10:47 May I suggest the Wishbone version of Beowulf? It’s the abridged version with a cute doggy. (I literally had that version of Beowulf as a kid.)
The horse DID tell Pigsy that it was all his fault and to go get Sun Wukong already (instead of also noping out).

This always makes me think of
"Ayashi no Ceres".
If you don't wanna watch it,
go to Anime Americas
"Top ten worst couples in Anime".
They sum it up pretty well.
So excited to you react to all of journey to the west. It gets crazier!
everyone except Tripikata can fly but if a magical/divine being carries a normal human, it will weight like a mountain, not to mention that they all have to go through 81 trials before meeting the Buddha
23:31 I think by ‘skinny’ pigsy meant “He called you so skinny that a small gust could snap your twig spine in half.”
The horse does not help much beyond being a horse, but at least he doesn't cause any problems, so he's a net plus.
Piggsy's ratio if helping verses causing problems is not exactly in his favor....
5:40 funny that you mention that...
Y'know as someone who watches the Lego spin-off,it is especially funny since Six-Eared Macaque *is* a dramatic, guy with a plan as opposed to Wukong's constant impromptu plans
You would know about the Golden Cicada thing if you hadn't skipped over Tripitaka's friggin' backstory in Part 2!
19:06 The difference is that the dragon horse doesn't make the situation worse by being there
Until very recently, being skinny was a sign of poverty and well, not have been pampered or healthy. Calling someone skinny is calling some they are poor and ugly at the same time.
I love that you're watching OSP. Here are some favorites that I recommend for after Journey to the West:
(Anyone else can add more in the replies)
Greek Mythology: The Theogony, Eros and Psyche , Medea, The Iliad, The Odyssey, and the Trojan War
Norse Myths: The Poetic Edda , Utgard Loki, Loki
Miscellaneous favorite: College, Hell, What's The Difference
Aztec Mythology: The Five Suns
Books: Frankenstien, Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde
If you check you Blue's content: Pope Fights, History Hijinks-Failed Assassinations
Don't forget the tropes talks in general (probably recency bias, but I really liked the new "those damn phones" one).
Might I recommend Pygmalion and the Hades videos?
21:36 Guess it's because they obtained immortality through being scratched out of the ledgers of the dead
Check out their Halloween reviews of classic monsters and horror novels, like Dr Jekyl and mr Hyde.
OSP draws such simply cute waifus.
17:55 Adception! Watching a reactor get interrupted by ads while you’re watching and get interrupted by ads
Monkey murder hobbo, where have I seen that before.
The ad break 😭
in ep 2 you skipped over Tripataka's backstory a little bit with the tracking
That's where the Cicada part comes from.
I want to see you reacting to tripitaka's back story. Maybe you can throw in the april fools video OSP just did
Wait, "expelled from the hero part" is a common genre? I just saw it start to appear last year or so...
oh airier murder drones has a new episode out
The fact he said that wukong with a plan would be an imposter is so funny if your familuler with the story
THERES A NEW MURDER DRONES EPISODE OUT
am late wanna point out horse is actually more useful then pigsy because it got pigsy to actually go get monkey he was planning on running instead
Yeah, you kinda accidentally skipped the monk's back story in episode 2 when you accidentally clicked something.
I’ve never seen a full episode of Konosuba, but I have seen enough small videos of it to say this:
The horse will ALWAYS be better than Aqua because it isn’t annoying, doesn’t expect everyone to worship it and do everything it demands, it doesn’t try to sabotage anyone, and it doesn’t throw a tantrum whenever something doesn’t go it’s way.
just letting you know, the next episode of Murder drones it out
cant wait for part 5
beat tamer anime does the trope he get's kick out of the hero's party.
Yes, I want to see you react to Tripitakas backstory you skipped.
Please do some of the trope talks and miscellaneous myths of sarcastic Productions
I'm just constantly wondering why there isn't a straight anime adaptation of JTTW. By that, I mean keeping the story as it is.
Ok o think the fact the horse got pigsy to get monkey was the right call basically forcing him to owe up to his stupidity
Amazing news!! Murder drones Ep4 is now out today!!! In April 7 you should check the heck out Please!!!! :0
Technically you can call him Goku as that is the Japanese translation of his name.
Le murder drones EP 4 is out :3
Murder drones ep 4 is out
I can see why manhwa comics that is in china have a common pill of imortality
you say wu kong could fit into the mary sue category? the definition of wich is a character with no flaws? wu kong is mostly flaws loosely strung together by general overpoweredness. being op does not make a mary sue being flawless is.
Is it just me or does the demon seem oddly like a kind husband to her
No No no no. The revenge trope is later
You could call wukong goku because that's his name in Japan
As someone who forced themself through an original old english copy of beowulf… i can understand you resistance, it can be Very painful to read… and this as someone that normally enjoys some archaism.
🧙♂️👏🤲
*KAI!!!!!!!!!!!!!*
*ahem*
Not sorry.

Great episode.
kk=ok. Pretty straight forward lol
Speaking of Beowulf you should watch her video on it
he literally said he would

@@mrroboshadow I skip past all the pausing since it gets annoying to me
@@parkersmith8711 then why are you watching reaction content?
@@mrroboshadow because I like it I just don't like when people keep pausing in the middle of it. just talk and watch
