Book reader here: It CAN kill him if Tripitaka or Guanyin doesn't let up. It IS monkey, so it will take a lot, but it does shrink and can cut into his head, he even bleeds from it AND make him feel like his brain is going to explode from the inside out. Tripitaka uses it as a threat when monkey goes off to get help. Saying if he abandons them he won't stop until monkey's head explodes. Also when the fillet is first put on, his first move is to go kill guanyin for doing this to him. Tripitaka reminds monkey that she taught HIM the spell so she knows it and can kill him with it. This revelation low key shatters him. He kneels before Tripitaka calmly telling him what the fillet means and that he will behave and never think about anything else except the mission of going west. All he asks is he doesn't treat the spell like a toy for frequent use.
23:02 The whole "Sucks at fighting underwater" is because he was born from a stone, thus he's made of stone, in turn means he sinks in water and moves slowly.
Just to be clear, the Yellow Wind Demon's storm is so powerful that it can destroy Earth, Heaven and Hell. The fact that Sun took the blast head on and survived it with just damage eyes speaks a lot of his durability.
Shoutout to Journey to the West for also starting the trope of serial escalation. We went from Sun being able to terrorize all of heaven and many demon kings, and 500 years later, there's just some random demon that can destroy literally everything.
That scene of Sun Wu Kong talking to Pigsy whole disguise as his wife before challenging him is that is one of the most hilarious things I've ever heard. Same goes for Red saying, "So in this exciting episode, Sun Wu Kong gets to serve divorce papers."
Fun fact: there's a Lego series called "Monkey Kid" that's heavily based on Journey to the West, where the main character is played by the VA of Sokka from Avatar, and the monkey king himself is played by sean schemmel, the English VA of Son Goku. I highly suggest looking it up. The animation is top tier, and has no right to go that hard.
Journey to the West is so influential that you can see the character archetypes and tropes that it established in so many modern anime and other stories. Dragonball Z is one of the most obvious, but one of my favorites is InuYasha where the main characters correspond to the main characters in Journey to the West. InuYasha is Sun Wukong: immensely powerful, prefers to solve problems by fighting, hot-headed, got magically sealed away Kagome is Tripitaka: spiritually pure, reincarnation of a powerful being, frequently gets kidnapped, released InuYasha from being sealed (and InuYasha's beads function the same as Monkey's hat for the same purpose) Miroku is Pigsy: a competent fighter but not as strong as the others, generally a good guy but also lazy and lecherous Sango is Sandy: highly skilled, often the voice of reason, always reliable Kilala/Kirara is the dragon horse: usually takes on a non-threatening form but is actually much bigger and stronger, acts as transportation, doesn't usually talk The only one who doesn't really correspond is Shippo. I guess Tagalong Kid is a more recent trope.
The entire story of Journey to the West is an escort mission. Yes Sun Wukong could get to India very easily seeing how he goes to and from Heaven repeatedly but Tripitaka has to get there too.
The nicknames Pigsy and Sandy are kind of just a western thing that arose from various translations of the Journey to the West, like how Wukong will just be referred to as Monkey. Pigsy is a pig, and it wasn't brought up but Sandy is more of a sand demon than a river demon. He was just forced to dive into a river to hide from the flying swords that the Jade Emperor sent down every day to stab him.
@@Leuk117 To be fair, at the time, that stuff was beyond precious and expensive. Now Pigsy on the other hand, got sloppy drunk and hit on the Moon Goddess Chang’E too many times. Got turned into a pig. That’s karmic.
@@mondenkindqueentbf Pigsy wasn't supposed to be Pigsy. Originally he was going a mortal human but the Celestial Court made an error in their papers and sent him to an animal farm instead
With regards to Sandy and Pigsy being called that instead of their formal names, it's a common translation short hand used. Pigsy is obvious, but Sandy needs a little explanation. See, his name "Sha Wujing" has several meanings. "Wujing" means "Awakened to Purity" and is his name in religion given to him by Guanyin. "Sha" is his surname, taken from the river(which was a quicksand river) he lived in and translates to "Sand." So he gets called Sandy in a lot of translations.
Fun fact: The reason why Sun Wukong (or Pigsy) can't simply carry Tripitaka across the river via cloud stride is that Tripitaka is mortal. Walking/striding on clouds is an immortal ability, and I remember Wukong saying something along the lines of it being impossible to separate a mortal from the mortal realm in such a manner; that he'd be harder to lift than any mountain if he tried to carry the monk in such a manner. Basically it's a convenient excuse for why Wukong can't just carry Tripitaka to the West with one cloud somersault, but it's still interesting to think about!
We all know the story would be like half a statement long if sun could just fly tripitaka, the problem is that for the damn journey to "work" he needs to get there by "mundane means" aka on foot or horse, and this experience it all, it's probably the first, and the biggest "it's not about the destination, it's about the journey..." to the west
The only backstory that you missed is the monk's in part 2 which you skipped by accident. Just go back if you want. Edit: Found it 2:45 to 3:50 in the video

You should check out more of Red's videos on mythology. The Greek myths are awesome, I suggest Hades as a great one. Also, the Norse myths are cool, too, with their video about the origins of Loki being one of the best.
4:35 Correction Red is not payed enough to give a singular f*ck
This is some of the best stuff from Red, along with her Miscellaneous Myths and Trope Talks series. Blue is the history guy and he does some great stuff there and also with his History Makers series.
Sun Wukong is just unable to change his tail for some reason, I forgot why
10:00 that’s DBZ music. If it’s not DIRECTLY from Vegeta’s final Flash scene against Perfect Cell, it’s some kind of remix of same.
Case in point, check out the version Team Four Star used for the scene. “TFS Vegeta Final Flash” should get you the proper song.👍
Oadhog from the overwatch lunar new year update?
Great video can't wait for part 4
10:04 it is DBZ it Final Flash
I think that’s the final flash theme when pigsy is explaining his weapon
13:37 Pretty sure that's Attack on Titan OST
It is Attack on Titan.
Blue dose general history stuff
Red dose story's and mythology
10:18 that is in fact more DBZ music.
that music you heard that you couldnt place is also from DBZ usually used as the intro to a fight, like r in the old Dragonball Z movies.
10:00 FINAL FLASH!
If ONLY The Horse Could Fly!
2:00 The answer, is yes
The song you couldn't place was Vegeta's Final Flash theme from DBZ.
It's from dbz i believe that it's from the first time goku gos super
I recomend blues pope fight series
The title says "part 2" instead of "part 3".
Give him a few hours he will figure it out
Yeah it's fair to say the horse is the most useless character in the entire book.
It says a lot when PIGSY is a more reliable ally then you.
This was fun.
part 4 plz and I recomend the lego series "Monkie kid" that is based in Journey to the West
This might be late but I think in DB the role of Tripitaka is filled by Bulma. I can’t believe it took me this long to figure it out.😄😄
IS ANYONE GOING TO TALK ABOUT THE SONG
7:18 *looks back at TFS cooler*
And by the way Son Wukong is the Chinese name of Son Goku
Its DBZ Vegeta's Final flash attack
Thanks for this reaction.
