yo! just a few things:
1. i’m seeing lots of ppl (presumably men) getting pretty aggressive in these comments. probably because oh my god! a woman! has made content geared towards other women! where are the men supposed to voice their opinions? probably somewhere else. i’m deleting all those comments because f*ck off.
2. more importantly, lots of people are pointing out (rightfully so) the lack of woc representative here. i made this video based on shows and movies that i have watched and for sure i should’ve included more representation but race wasn’t at the forefront of my mind when i was making this. i was just going off of stuff i’ve seen. i’m a woman of colour myself and of course we feel rage all the same as white women. who knows, maybe i’ll make another video based on woc rage.

female rage and male sadness is pretty rare in entertainment, because of gender roles and stereotypes. woman are told not to be angry and men are told not to be sad. it’s really therapeutic to see it let out on the screen
Honestly I think male sadness is very common in media. Maybe because I avoid some mainstream stuff like Marvel, that reinforces my impression. But yeah I'd say male tears are waaay more common than female rage (e.g. the last thing I watched had Pedro Pascal breaking down in tears in TLOU ep 6, but I don't know if Ellie's outburst counts as female rage).
I have been told to express my emotions more countless times from, at most, age 11. It's weird hearing people say "men are told not to be sad" more often than "men shouldn't be sad". I will say my dad hated it when I cried, but he also hated it when my mum cried so I think that was less of a gender thing and more of a him-thing.
While thinking about this, I noticed that people expect me to be more angry than I am basically all the time. My therapist was once telling me how I could deal with my anger by punching pillows, it was honestly one of the silliest things I've ever heard. To this day, I don't know what made her think I'd be angry.

@@YodasPapa this is a late reply, i apologize. but maybe i don't enough consume enough media to see male sadness. but yes, i agree with you that female rage is something i don't see often.
this is will personal... but my dad was very stoic and very rarely showed emotion, and he told me it was to be a "good man" but i could tell deeper down he had a lot of inner turmoil and repressed emotions. meanwhile, my mother was a very angry person. she would rather lash out at me and everyone else instead of just crying because she didn't want to be seen as weak.
i think that really shaped me to never show my vulnerability, my weakness and most of all my anger. i have so much anger and it's cathartic seeing women let out their anger, it's something i can't do myself. but at the same time, it scares me because i was raised to believe that anger is destructive.
i think it's beneficial to see people who's gender you share on the screen expressing a range of emotions. i've noticed in therapy too where depression in women is displayed as sadness and depression in men is displayed as anger.
Male sadness is rare in entertainment? Have you seen anything? Men being sad is pretty comon. Also men are not told to be sad, they told to not to cry.
There’s something I love about female rage in shows. Not trying to be pretty, not being delicate or loving, not talking about guys, just so raw and real. Mens rage will never compete.

Umm......I don't know what you mean, most of the actresses playing this characters are 'pretty' so they can romantize 'mental illnesses', I have mental illnesses, I watched The Black Swan and I love it and I would not dare to watch it right now, so Pearl won't go in my list any time soon.

Female rage in films always give me the shivers, it's scary when a man shouts but it's just noise. When a woman shouts, it's raw emotion, all those bottled up feelings exploding out. It's amazing. sad, tragic and beautiful all at the same time.

Of course men get sad, mad, upset, depressed etc I’m not discounting that they have every right to be as emotional as women, my point is, most of the time (not all the time) when a man shouts it is just noise and anger. Women, it’s frustration. But that’s my opinion I’m not trying to have a debate here it’s a UA-cam comment section.

@@leku_0z579 I think what she means is that in society women "arent supposed to" yell and get mad. Yes men "arent supposed to cry" in society that's why it's often seen as moving when a man cries cause they've taught themselves their whole lives to not cry, "be a man". This same way women have taught themselves to keep their anger in and "be a lady". So when we see female rage you know it really means something, it's full of pungent bottled up emotion. It takes a lot for a man to cry stereotypically the same way it takes lot for a woman to flip out. Obviously all emotions are valid everyone is meant to have feelings and I hope our world is working towards that mindset but for now when we see female rage its much more impactful than male rage because it's been bottled up. Its not necessarily trying to take control but to be heard. Where as when a man flips out it can be more controlling. Female rage is women saying I'm at my limit please work with me the same way a man crying can be depicted.

Oh God I have been imagining livid scenarios of me beating the shit out of people or smashing things and having a proper, cinematic meltdown since I can remember. Even screaming the loudest scream my lungs can push seems like a comforting idea. So many years of muffled sobs, muffled anger, muffled voice. So many years of grinding my teeth into marble, clenching my fists into bruises and just gulping down my anger like hot lava.

U r definitely lying, we all have seen women being called drama queens, "shes overreacting", and "it's probably that time of the month" whenever a woman shows emotions, in the 19s women showing emotions or raging was considered a diagnosable physical illness i.e female hysteria, maybe get a little educated and consider the other side as well instead of getting all offended and denying it, if the roles were reversed I'm 100% you would've had a different reaction.
I saw a comment that said women flipping out in anger and men crying are equivalent. Men crying is looked down upon as it's (wrongly) viewed as weak, Whereas if a woman explodes in anger it's trivialized and we're "making a big deal out of nothing." I hope some men would realize that when a woman finally shows her anger over a seemingly small thing, it wasn't just that, that was just the cherry on top. It was many things and she let the rage build up over time

All people of all genders should show love. Men not showing love because "that's what they do" is a complete load of horseshit. That's not what they do-- that's what indoctrination has done to them. When you are denied love all of your life, when you are told that you are not allowed to cry, not allowed to hug and kiss the people you love, that you must condense every emotion to make it socially acceptable... that is what creates VICTIMS.

If you live somewhere where men see you as hysterical I'm sorry. When I saw a girl crying twice I comforted them. One was great and the other I opened up to about my grief and she left. I'm not complaining about women not caring about mens' emotions because others experience it far worse. I'm just saying in the real world, people see a man raise their voice, they call the cops. If a woman does it then they assume there is a good reason. Also these women are all amazing actresses I love their performance. Idk maybe I'm sensitive but it seems mean to just say mens' emotions don't matter. I think it depends on the script and how much they repress it. When a woman represses it, she's forced to but when a man does, he's toxic? Then when he lets out anger he's also toxic but when she does, she's empowered?

I feel like female rage is such a beautifully tragic aspect of femininity and I don’t know how to explain it. Female rage is so often caused by letting emotions build up until they explode and i guess there’s just something so relieving about watching a woman snap and let all of that go.
theres nothing relieving about seeing a woman or someone in general angry. from a psychological point of view female and male rage dont exist and women being angry have nothing to do with femininity especially because all these women are angry because of different reasons. makes no sense.

I've said it before but I seriously don't know why there's something about female rage, anger, deep sadness and trauma that truly scares me. When men show it, when a father is being a horrible person, when a guy is punching the wall, I see it and I feel bad for them but it doesn't really impact me as much as with women.
Just last week I read a manga about a mentally ill mother that left me hollow and with my stomach hurting. I was very disturbed and I didn't even know why because I've read about abusive, bad fathers before so why did I feel so much fear and sorrow about it now being a mother?
I think at the end of the day it all comes down to how we are taught what emotions should go to what gender. We are taught that men can go crazy from all the hardwork but women have to stay perfect and only cry and shed pretty tears but never shout. Never rage.

sorry for the rant but the only time ive ever felt this type of rage, the type that makes u feel so overwhelmed with anger is once, my dad and i got into a screaming argument. my grandpa was dying from cancer and had dementia, my other grandpa was dying from a disease that was basically slowly killing him. he couldnt talk or walk. i was struggling really bad with mental health issues at this time, anxiety and an eating disorder, and barely left my room. he told me that i didnt care that my grandparents were dying because i spent so much time by myself and "not enough with them". even tho i saw them quite often despite the distance. he also started talking shit about my mom not getting a job, how she was lazy etc, even though she was full time taking care of my grandpa. i completely lost it. he had no idea what i was going through or my mom, he wasnt there through any of it, he lives in a different fucking country 4000 miles away ffs. and i just fucking lost it ive never started screaming at someone before.

It's true, but that is the problem.
Women are raised to never show anger and to sit still and be pretty and are told that its not lady like to show rage, they can shed a tear and be quiet but when they scream they're hysterical and crazy.
It shouldnt be special or giving shivers to see female rage, it should be just as normal as a man is showing his anger.

100% agreed. The problem is that both women and men are so poorly written and meant to fit society’s standards, that when women are actually portrayed as angry it’s treated like it’s special. It shouldn’t be special. Same with men crying, especially since a lot of men are naturally born unable to be “masculine” like being physically disabled or autistic and overwhelmed more often. And also when men are written as angry that’s that, the writers don’t put much thought even though men 100% have valid reasons to be mad at the standards placed on them too.
Also side note especially continuing on the disabled point, the lack of representation as well that is why men aren’t portrayed as sad more often and women angry. I’m autistic & adhd myself as a girl and I have a way harder time controlling my anger and have been told I act like a man sometimes bc of it.

The performances by Emmy Rossum, Margot Robbie, Isabelle Fuhrman, Natalie Portman, Phoebe Waller-Bridge, and Zendaya had me on the edge of my seat. Those are some of my most favorite performances by female actors.
Edit: another good one was Lucy Liu in Kill Bill. All of the actresses in those films were great at portraying feminine rage but one of the scenes that stuck with me was O-Ren calmly threatening her yakuza subordinates with a beheading after having so gracefully beheading Boss Tanaka for using her heritage as a negative in front of the others and gradually becoming for enraged as she got to the end of that whole speech was so. Good.

edit: more in depth, i tore shit apart, i swung into my punching back so hard i might've torn a bicep muscle, but it ended up helping me relieve all that stress and just screaming it out was probably the best thing i could've done. channel your anger into action is the best thing to do for when this stuff happens;

seeing female rage finally depicted in movies is so refreshing. it makes me feel understood and at peace and im sure its done that for alot of other people too. a lot of times movies are written from the male gaze of what a woman is/is "supposed to be" and idk its just so nice to see female rage/anger actually depicted for once in film history
I love how in the clip of Fiona and Frank she yells at Frank and tells him that Monica left her to take care of HIM. she never mentions the kids, how much of a burden the kids were on her and her freedom. she never blames the kids for having to take care of them, she makes sure Frank knows that HE was the real burden. I just love that scene so much
This is me before my period, I feel like I hold a lot of things just for the sake of everyone’s happiness but pms gets me every time. I feel so bad when I am at this state, because I was taught to love the soft version of me and never pay attention to my own true feelings. There is something so satisfying about that moment when you are in pure female rage. Like it just feels like you have reached a peak and you can just let go. Rue’s scene with her mother just gives me the chills. It’s so real. Zendaya portrayed pure rage beautifully

I study political science in college and it is part of our curriculum to study how our society structures gender roles and how those impact our individual paths. When it comes to women, they are pressured from a young age to conform their entire sense self based on how others see them. Girls' clothes, even as toddlers, are meant to restrict the body while boys clothes are meant to feel comfortable. They are taught to be quieter, to be more docile, more loving, more caring of others, while boys are taught to be curious, competitive, independent. When girls grow up, they are rewarded by the school system for these expected attributes : you do better at school if you listen to adults, do your homework, do what's expected of you, etc. So they get better grades and are better students. But after high school, women are expected to give up on their studies, or to study for a very short time so they can move on to become mothers and take care of their children and the housework - whether they have a job or not ! Women need to be "pure", they can only be intimate with someone who they are genuinely in love with, they need to be beautiful and take care of their appearance; but if they do that too much, they are called vain, superficial, ditzy, etc. So even though women are molded their entire life to be society's idea of "woman", they can't be "woman" too much or else they get punished by it, because woman in this world is a bad thing. We read an amazing study on this which concluded "Men must live up to their sex, Women must escape it".
So it's no surprise that this generation of women and feminism feels so identified to the concept of female rage. After all of the pain it is to be a woman, all the heartache and all the violence we go through, we are still told it's our fault, we need to be more careful, it's how things are "naturally" supposed to be, we have to put up with it. For how many years have men mocked and denigrated the concept of the "crazy" woman, the angry woman, the hysterical woman, the bitter woman? They have made this image their toy and for so, so long women have been afraid of this archetype that they've tried to move away from it by making themselves even quieter and more docile, who even knew that was possible ? So to see books, movies, tv shows, and internet culture reapproppriate what was always ours to begin with, *female rage* fills me up with joy.

@Jocelyn Davis Notice how the comment you’re answering to has not mentionned men’s condition, except when saying “men must live up to their sex”, as it is what society is expecting them to. What OP said does not contradict your portrayal of men’s condition. Patriarchy is actually hurtful to both men and women, there is no need to undervalue one or the other. Men would actually benefit from not trying to be manly all the time, and should not negate their femininity. That’s the behavior that we label as “toxic”. The idea of masculinity is toxic when it dismisses any emotion viewed as feminine, which leads to the ideas you just described.

I love this so much because it represents reality of our emotions. I relate to it myself, sometimes you live under so much pressure and expectations and you bottle up rage knowing that you just want to be yourself.

I know that I could never be perfect, the harder I tried the more I realized no one is ever perfect there is always a reason that someone that looks so perfect is not, and they tried so hard to deny it, so don't be hard on yourself take a break to live your life when you're still young if not u will regret it when you're older. But remember no one is ever perfect.
Everytime I scream, everytime I want to express how I feel, they say that I'm overreacting, that I'm a pick-me who wants attention. This video made me cry, thank you for this compilation, it makes me happy to see women express their rage (even if these women are from movies or series).

I feed on this video. It's my inner voice. Every time I hear it a different sentence sticks to me, resonates with me, tells me of my turmoil and tells me it's not okay to be treated like this.
I’m a transgender man, but watching these really brings up lots of pain and rage I still drag with me from my days as a girl. Emotions and pain I wished I could have expressed, but I was always told to just be pretty and smile instead…
I'm curious, do you find it easier to express them now? I personally think as boys grow older, they are not able to express as many emotions either to avoid being looked as weak. It explains why many men are described as stoic, and my thought comes from personal experiences as well.

I'm at a certain point in confusion where I don't know if I should be mad at him or just sad with myself. Perhaps I'm just frustrated, or disappointed. I don't comprehend, however, at what direction these feelings are aimed. Am I angry at him for giving me false hope or at myself for believing I could have the unattainable? If not even she could have his love to keep, then why would I have it?
I can't quite put my finger on what exactly I felt during that moment, but I believe it was triggered by his sweet words. He knows how to handle those very well, and that caught me completely off guard. It only took me a few compliments and an intimate scenario to get absolutely attached to the core of that guy. I kept wishing he would love me like he once loved her. He said he adored every single thing about her. Why would she ever break his precious heart? Although I'm positive she was a sweet lady, I can't help but envy what she had. She had all of him and she wasted it all away. I wish he would hold me close to his heartbeats and caress my hair until I fall asleep, until I melt into his soul. If I could cuddle up with him every night, I'd never want to wake up. That is a huge deal of a feeling, because, at least for me, that feeling is felt the worst when we know and realize that it is just daydreaming, and that prolly it would never be like that... i wonder about such scenario much of the time, and i know, it's horrible...
I don't know if false hope like you said is really a real thing, because sometimes, we create a vision for ourselves attached to the scenarios that we create, and turn it into plausible truths, but that doesn't mean that they aren't lies you see?
However, don't blame yourself for that "angry" and "idealistic" feeling, it will eventually look like a cloud on the infinite plain of life, and you will not have to worry about it in the coming times, your heart just twisted you, and now you will slowly realize what it made to you.

There's something extremely powerful about female rage, it's not a positive force but it's a very visceral feeling that all of us feel, men and women alike, the way women can display the rage hits you deeper than anything.

The thing I find interesting about rage is that it's the one emotion men feel they can express, but it's the one emotion that women feel they can't express. Men rage because they have other emotions they can't or won't share. Women rage because they've been bottling it for so long, but finally can't hold it back anymore. They have to release it. Sort of like, men would rather scream instead of cry, but women cry until they finally scream.

No, actually. You should really read into male abusers and the book 'Why Does He Do That'. Angry and abusive men don't do so because of pent up sadness, like women are taught. They do it because they see women simply inferior, and that abusing them is justified. That's it. Emotional therapy and healing 'past wounds' of abusive men has never been successful in rehabilitation. That angry men are just actually sad is a lie that had been fed to women for thousands of years to make us empathize with those who are killing and abusing us. Please do not continue this lie.
