Hey all! Thank you so much for your continued support or encouragement! Wanted to put a couple of thoughts here re this video:
    - Thank you to those who have pointed out that Eli is waving a finger around at the beginning, not a carrot - I can see that now. I'd been told about the carrot gags, and since Layne had one at the end, when I went back to watch again, I assumed Eli had one too.
    - Just wanted to confirm there was no shade-throwing intended at Rick Underwood - this wonderful community has been furnishing me with a lot of insider info that I don't have a) because I'm new and b) because I don't want to watch much other material and potentially spoil these videos. I can see how my comments might have come across as being a touch blamey towards Rick, but I am aware that it was an aesthetic decision to reshoot Monster Mash, mutually agreed, and unfortunately he was unable to be there for the reshoot date. The one problem with not scripting any of this, is sometimes things come out wrong. To that end, I wanted to clarify that point.
    - You are all wonderful, and I'm overwhelmed with how everyone has been taking to supporting my work. Thank you all.

Rick Underwood always does all their complex make up (including Hoist the Colours and The Oogie Boogie Song) and he’s amazing! I didn’t interpret you as meaning anything negative, only that you were glad to see he’s work now that you recognised his name. I think the other make up person (sorry don’t remember their name) did the prosthetics.
I thought that was a carrot in the beginning too! I’m not sure if we’re certain that it’s supposed to be a finger (confirmed by VoicePlay, I mean)?

    Funny story about the trees.
Pattycake Productions is in the Oviedo Mall in Orlando Florida. Layne literally went into the parking lot and cut those "trees" branches off the trees and drag each in and set up one at a time.

I knew you would love this. To tell you true - this is NOT the way we played it in band. Geoff was (edited: videoing Layne) bringing trees from the parking lot into the studio. Rick Underwood was also makeup artist and beard wrangler in Ghost Riders in the Sky. There are 3 favorites that are in the Tony Wakim era that you should see. One is Phantom of the Opera, two is Road Trip - a live production from the Sing-Off Tour (get the one with 9 mil +), three is another live comedy the Full Chicken Song done in Michigan I think. Phantom is gorgeous and Tony is the Phantom, Road Trip is a story of 5 guys in one car trying to get somewhere, and the full Chicken Song is just a hoot (Eli is the chicken). That one might be a perfect Thanksgiving treat!

@@davidkreacts What part of Canada? When I was in Chemical Engineering at Univ of Florida (lab tech and researcher). Had 4 labs and a pilot plant (digesting wood chipper for a paper mill that we built out back. We were working with companies to create an inline viscometer for the paper mills so workers would have a check on the viscosity and prevent explosions. I got to go up to Prince George and work in their paper mill with one of the in-line viscometers that I used my lab viscometer to compare the accuracy of new one. I was supposed to go up to BC in October but didn't get there until January. Dang, that was cold. It was 41C and F the morning I left and had to walk out on the tarmac to get to the plane. Once on I had my empty bag that I put almost all my clothes into and shoved it under the seat. My husband met me in Gainesville and it was 102 degrees warmer. I got down and kissed the ground.
But I loved the Canadians who let me share their home (bed and breakfast), got me a humidifier since there's no humidity in that kind of air, took me to work and taught me to drive on snow and ice before they let me pick up my rental car, took me around town, asked me what I wanted for breakfast - something different? got a couple standards, bear sausage, moose stew in the evening. Had such a good time.

@@bjspeck4337 I'm so glad you had such a wonderful experience! I'm in Toronto, Ontario. Absolutely love it here - enough of a metropolis for me to feel comfortable (as a city boy), but so much quieter than London or NYC, which I found as a creative to be very claustrophobic, mentally speaking.
I've been to Winnipeg in January and experienced -45 degrees, so I fully understand the shock and challenge in that kind of weather. The one good thing about how dry it is is that it doesn't get into your bones the way that a wet, London winter does.

That's probably the most fun video they've done to date. We just never know what's coming next. Every one a winner. :) Most of this was arranged by Layne but he also credits Geoff for suggesting the swing section. Tony Wakim gets a good showing in their Phantom of the Opera, In other videos yuo can always tell Tony by his amazing twinkly eyes. :) Layne was always a trickster, then J.None was too , and now Cesar has joined the madness. To hear more of Layne's voice you need to see the videos that dont include the beatboxing, such as Can't Help Falling in Love, True Colours which are pure harmony. A final note: we know that Layne loves to challenge Geoff to do more than he thinks he can. As friends since Middle School they gel so well. :)

regarding the captions: no, it's not the auto generated captions you need to worry about. in some of their videos, they have some funny bits in the captions, which is why we tell reactors to turn them on. but the auto generated ones are just distracting, as they're all wrong. (though that can produce some laughs as well, as some of them are hilariously wrong! but maybe that's something you can explore on your private time, lol) you can quickly tell auto generated and VoicePlay/Geoff provided captions apart, as auto generated only generates the captions one word at a time and often have a [music] in the captions, while VP/Geoff lyrics show up with a whole sentence at a time.

    Things I especially like:
Eli and Cesar doing character voice harmony after the train whistle (which is definiteley vocal)
    Elizabeth's D6
Not really a fan of the body function sounds but the proof that all of the gentlemen are 12 years old
The swing section at the end, which I think is the part that Geoff arranged
We never lose In the Hall of the Mountain King no matter what they do to twist it
    Additional information:
The trees in the front are real.
Eli is holding a finger, not a carrot (I thought so too)
Elizabeth lost a fake fingernail during filming
They couldn't find the nail so they glued a leaf from one of the trees on
Cesar lost his ears a couple of time, but they were easier to find and glue back on
Elizabeth has sung with them before as an additional soprano, but this is the first time she is on screen
Thanx for this leg of the journey!

@@davidkreacts That's my position as well: I don't normally consider bodily-function sounds to be particularly funny or interesting, but VoicePlay just had the aplomb to make it work somehow.
I would compare this to my stance on the use of profanity: I almost always find it puerile and a sign of poor communication skills, but in ST:Generations when the Enterprise D is about to crash into the planet and Data (who normally cannot even use contractions but has now spent most of the movie struggling with emotions, which he is experiencing for the first time due to the emotion chip that has fused to his neural net) looks at the screen and says "Oh, s___!", it is one of the funniest lines in the history of Hollywood. Exception that proves the rule: it only works because of the very unusual circumstances in which it occurs.
Similarly, if e.g. Ursula had started belching in Poor Unfortunate Souls, that would've just been dumb. But here they are able to make it work. Briefly.

While I still love J. None's voice and performances, Cesar has been an awesome addition to the group. He has a childlike innocence and exuberance behind the scenes that can also show up in videos when appropriate. Yes, he often calls Layne Papi, and despite being only about a decade younger, often refers to Kathy and Geoff as Mom and Dad. One of the tipping points in bringing him aboard as a regular member, according to VP's intro video, is that he often brings the guys coffee, especially from a Cuban deli. He can make you laugh, as he did here, brings the sass in Good For U, We're Good, and Rich Man, and made me ugly cry in I Can't Make You Love Me -- and I'd never been affected by the original version. Rick Underwood is the go-to makeup artist for VoicePlay, Geoff and Pattycake Productions. He was not at all at fault for Geoff doing the video over last year. He had done exactly what Geoff had asked. But Geoff decided the whole look of the video was darker than he wanted. The second time around, he used a larger and more colorfully lit set, chairs for the ‘monsters’ instead of starting them off on the floor and - perhaps the thing that had bothered him the most - his wife wasn’t looking so dead! Talking about branching out, there's a reaction I sincerely long for.The CV, during her pregnancy last spring did a music video of her own, singing Pour Unfortunate Soul, a wonderful interpretation that deserves reacting to.
There is a BUT though, you need to have seen The Little Mermaid Medley by VP first, before doing so. Spoiler- Geoff is still even Elizabeth Zharoff' s favourite Ursula. She wrote so herself in the comments to her video.
1949 there was a Swedish jazz pianist and entertainer that turned Grieg into Boggie woggie. That's the vibe Geoff is giving me here. Search for Charlie Norman Anitra's Dance, another piece from Peer Gynt.

Everyone looked mischievious or evil, and then there was Geoff right on the end with this big smile and wide eyes. My favorite comment I saw (I don't remember who said it or how exactly they worded it) was one of those comments like...."Day 38 among them....they still don't suspect anything". I don't know, it just made me crack up because I thought, yeah, he does look like the odd man...er troll....out.
Then I'm pretty sure that Cesar will sometimes call Layne Papi. I know he calls Geoff dad sometimes. Either way, when Cesar has his potion jar, he gives this little pleading, innocent look to Layne, and in my mind he's saying Papi can we please add this please. I couldn't believe they managed to do this to the classic I learned in band. I love it - never get tired of it. I was incredibly disappointed in that no one who matters did not push the acapella awards to give VoicePlay an award for the creativity of this. I felt and still do believe they deserve it. I still thoroughly enjoy your reaction/analysis. Your laughter is infectious! And yes, my high school band got a contrabass clarinet. I was so glad I was first chair in the bass clarinet section. Always had a weakness for bass notes. One of the tuba guys actually taught me to use the string bass. We had a great band. For contest, our chosen selection was Candide. The night before our time up, it fell apart. It has 2 different time signatures depending on which instrument you had. As I said it fell apart. Mr. Scott our band director said we had better not do that tomorrow morning or we'd be walking home (about 150 miles). We were flawless, one of the judges just wrote down "WOW!" When our teachers were on strike later that year, that judge (One of Univ of South Florida professors) came over and directed us until the strike was over.

The Scottish play! Well, now I know you’ve got a theater background. LOL.
One way you can usually guess whether it’s Layne or Geoff arrangement is Layne’s usually have his quirky sense of humor, and he gets a little more nuts with the perc-probably because he has come up with some new idea that nobody else knows about yet that he’s gonna work in (like burp-boxing). Geoff’s arrangements tend to have a bit more drama and a lot of layering and his transitions are amazing.

    4) Eli first time going through for me seemed 'bland' but on later hearings between the initial gravel voice and the quick high register makes me make up my mistake of his work

I just subscribed because I've decided that I LOVE your way of reacting to the videos. There's a few reactors I enjoy who are quite into the technical aspects of the voice and the actual sounds and the choices they make and I like that and learn from it. You are obviously knowledgeable about what you're seeing but you concentrate on totally different aspects of your analysis, combining commentary regarding audio techniques, the actual VIDEO design, along with costumes and sets. You bring my attention to the various bits and pieces of the performance in a way that they don't. And I love THAT.
Also, I strongly approve of the fact that you basically watch the video (mostly) uninterrupted first, so you get the full flavor of the piece before you go back and pick apart what you see. I sometimes get frustrated when a reactor pauses the video at what seems to me to be the most inopportune moment in order to discuss whatever they just observed, and then they miss what I feel is an important part of the performance because they broke the flow.
In addition - I just really enjoy watching your obvious enjoyment of a group that I adore.

The voices at the end about the merchandise are all Layne. WONDERFUL reaction. This is totally one of my new top favorites. Lots of their stuff is funny, but this one is hilarious.
It's been pointed out that the emotional tone between Layne and Geoff is quite different. Example: Both have a sense of humor, but Layne appears to prefer funny stuff, and his style of humor is more frenetic and crazy. (For instance, Geoff did Hoist the Colors, which is really quite tragic: All of them seemed a bit deranged in their own ways, but Layne's pirate character was speculated to be a "don't step on my shadow" kind of dangerous. So, even there he was touching comedy). Geoff more often has a dry humor, or something that's bouncy and fun. When Layne arranges something dramatic - I'm thinking now of True Colors - it's utterly heartbreaking and profound. (He also sings in True Colors). So perhaps we recognize them by the emotional tone as much as the actual arrangement. But if you find something in the actual arrangements that differs, I'll be interested to hear about it.

      Thank you so much!
That difference between their arrangement styles makes a lot of sense to me from what I've seen so far. I'm beginning to think that Geoff might have something of a traditional British dry wit kind of humour (which certainly explains why I enjoy his style so much - not to say I don't enjoy Layne's just as much). I'm looking forward to reacting to a more serious Layne arrangement too.

I knew this was one that would knock your socks off. And I'm glad you took the time to really dig in (despite your admission that you were only hitting the highlights); a lot of good analysis channels might still only give half the analysis you've provided here. Like I said before- length isn't an issue, because I am here for it all. And this song, I think, is one of their best, and something I bet Grieg himself might enjoy. (I've heard it said that Grieg wasn't terribly fond of this piece of music, due to its repetitive nature. Oddly enough, I've heard the same thing about Ravel and Bolero. One has to wonder why they wrote it that way.) In true VoicePlay style, they never hold still; you'll always be catching up, and really what better way to hold your audience's attention?

And yes, when you asked if they were saying actual words, as they were speeding up, I think someone (or more than one) was saying: "Let's go!" (and that might be repeated a couple bars later).
It's hard to pin down *exactly* what sets the "Big" acappella groups (Pentatonix, Home Free, VoicePlay, Voctave, [another whose name I'm blanking on) apart from each other is that VoicePlay leans ever so slightly more toward the jazzier chords.

There is a choral part to this, but you really have to look for it online. One of the lines is the trolls asking “may I hack him in his fingers”. It’s right after they are disenchanted because he won’t marry the kings daughter.
The masks are from their production of Kidnap the Sandy Claws.
The trees encroaching were due to Tony . In the behind the scenes, they open with Layne dragging in these big trees that Tony made him go get because “it didn’t look realistic enough and it needed trees in the foreground”. So thank you for noticing- I’m sure Tony will be pleased!
Although Eli is technically a tenor, when they would tour and Geoff was singing lead Eli could fill in on the bassline.
I have watched this so many times and I just noticed that when Geoff does that one low note before Layne does his little beatboxing solo everybody stops and put their head down. And as soon as he’s done they’ll “pop” back up. I try to watch each video concentrating on one character when they do something like this, but I get so distracted it takes me a lo-o-ong time to see it all.
Others have noticed that each time someone takes a sip their voices change, but you’re the first one to point out the cauldron colors.
Your background in musical theater really shows. It had never occurred to me that that up-and-down “motion” that they are vocalizing is like the cauldron bubbling and boiling.
I don’t know if you noticed, but Geoff and Cesar are the only two that do not partake of the potion. They’re kind of sneaky that way! Cesar is Mr. Personality. During filming they had to stop a number of times because his ears kept falling off. He doesn’t do sitting still very well.
Never apologize for taking too long when you’re actually contributing to our enjoyment. You could easily do a two hour video and most of us would stick around.

The "may I hack him in his fingers" line would lend credence to the comments that Eli throws a finger into the cauldron early on. It seems like that's unconfirmed, even though it definitely looks like it now someone has put the thought in my head.
I saw the heads down moment on a later re-watch - it's astonishing how much detail there is in this video!
"He doesn't do sitting still very well.": This does not surprise me in the least!
I'm glad that you are enjoying my videos, and I appreciate the comments and the encouragement. :-)
