- This is my reaction to and analysis of VoicePlay's cover of "Sleeping in the Cold Below" feat. Omar Cardona. Original song from the game Warframe, written by Keith Power, Alan Doyle and Greg Hawco.
NOTE: After the analysis section, there is some contextual gameplay footage featuring all the major story beats from the Call of the Tempestarii quest, within which the song is heard.

When VoicePlay did this, I listened to their amazing song. I started looking for my reactors, and a bunch showed up for this. When I woke in the morning, it was still running through my head and that happened over 3 weeks every single day. I was captured. Glad you hadn't done it yet. Cesar and Omar shared the 2 sets of contacts so they are mismatched. Look at Layne's gloves/or no gloves.
I think we are many that has found this a regular earworm. It's certainly very enjoyable to listen to.
For me, thinking of a space crew the phrase 'sleeping in the hold below' associates to a crew hibernating during a long voyage. Thinking more about space travels in general than this game.
Geoff's walking base line is amazing! He had a devil of a time with continuity errors, They did reshoot a section because Layne forgot his gloves, but you can see several they missed it in the final cut (there are at least 9 of them). . Also, check out Cesar's eyes at timestamp 0:10 - the image is reversed. He is actually wearing the white lens in his right eye, with Omar wearing it in his left. They also share a pair of blue lenses. Eli is wearing turquoise, Layne is wearing purple, and Geoff is wearing the gold you mentioned. This was filmed on the LED wall and floor at Optiview 360 in Longwood, FL Geoff created the background video for the projection. He searched "Japanese street wear" to find the costumes.
That has got to be the best reaction I've seen you do so far.
I love that you played Voiceplay's video and then played the part in the game where the song is along some of the other parts of the game.
I love Warframe's version of the song but Voiceplay's just brought it to a whole new level.
When this first came out on Patreon, it was such an earworm for me. Even if I went to sleep with different music, I woke up with this going through my mind. Usually learning the words cure it for me, but even learning all the separate parts didn’t completely cure it. Hopefully your explanation of what the words mean will finally put it to rest, and I can just enjoy listening to it when I choose. (Still will be often - I love this one!)
I can understand that - it's just complicated enough, but still simple to the point of engraining itself without any trouble! I hope the video helps you find the balance you want. :-)
Thank you for the awesome reaction. I had never heard of the game before but when I heard VP do this song I was curious on how the original sounded. After hearing both versions VP’s version sounded more like a traditional sea shanty. Geoff really did an excellent job with the arrangement and the video. He created the video being played on the LED screen behind them and of course Eli did the lighting. Thank you for sharing the game play at the end. It’s always nice to put context to a song or dialogue when you are not familiar with it 😊
I find this song so beautiful. I just love the harmonies and then when Omar breaks away and sings his own thing I get goosebumps. 😊
Oh yeah, I had that same reaction at the end!😅
This one got sooo stuck in my head and I had never heard it previously. I really love what they did with this one. And I wish it had more views! 😅
I like this one and after hearing the cover and looking up the original, I can definitely hear the Alan Doyle touch on it. I was introduced t his music by my wife back in the late 90s with Great Big Sea.
I am so excited about every single reaction from you about a Voiceplay or Geoff arrangement. So many things you can help me discover, I wouldn't have recognized! Thank you so much. And thank you also for the fair and humble use of the original video, which is outstanding on your channel. You are the first, who gave me the context to the music.
Putting in "one or two hours" (actual duration of an hour unit may vary) in order to properly understand this song, and analyze this performance is what I call commitment. Thanks for the sharing the context with us, I was wondering about those lyrics.
Great reaction and analysis, as usual, thank you! I enjoyed your comment about how knowing both the original and VoicePlay's cover helps you enjoy both more, I find the same to be true for me with many pieces of music. And thank you for the play-through footage, that was very interesting to see!
It's 10:30pm for me when you said that time!! Ha ha!! Love your reaction as always!!
Thank you for taking us through the song and the mission! So cool❤
Wonderful reaction! I really think this is probably one of my top 5 or 10 VP songs right now they move around according to mood etc. Game play!
VoicePlay's version makes it more accessible for those of us unfamiliar with gaming.
Everything VoicePlay is producing nowadays is incredible. I couldn't define what it is so now I have a better understanding. I am learning in an enjoyable way through these discussions. And I even learned about video gaming which is still not my cuppa.
YESS!!!!!!!!! I'm so excited for this one!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I hope you enjoy. :-)
@@davidkreacts I did! I also loved seeing more context from the game (since I'll likely never actually get around to playing it)!
Thanks David 😊
glad you enjoyed this I thought it was awesome
Very awesome indeed!
Thanks for reacting to and analyzing this earworm from VP! Guess it'll be back to playing 24/7 in my head for the next 2 weeks...again. Really love Omar on this song. Love the ending with Geoff descending and the tenors sopranoing! XD Super cool that you included the game footage. I had to skip ahead through it a bit cuz first person/flying makes me motion sick, but it was neat to get to see it since I know I can't play it.
I know that one!
Great reaction as always, David!
Thanks for the great reaction to this video.
I still hope to see your first reaction to a Dan Vasc cover soon. 🙂
Greetings from Germany.
Great reaction! Great shirt too!
Nice reaction as always.
Very interesting comment about Layne's 'drums' at the beginning being kind of 'maritime'. I'm unsure what real drums you might be thinking about, but as someone who grew up in Hawaii, they sound almost a bit Polynesian to me at the start of the song. Not in tempo or beat count, but a bit like a hollowed log? I think other covers of this song play heavily on a Celtic vibe. I know at least Colm McGuiness' version uses a Bodhran drum, which has a similar somewhat 'hollow' sound. Geoff has said that he first heard the song on Colm's site.
Later, when you question whether the lighting on them is separate from the LED screen? It IS both. Having watched the Behind the Scenes, they did set up lights, but there also IS light hitting them from the LED screen. Also, I want to comment on the transitions between images on the LED. To me, it reminds me of 'Warp Speed' from the original Star Wars movie.
And lastly, what a great choice of shirt for this!
You just impressed me. You actually know 1) what a bodhram is and 2) you spelled it right.
Sincerely,
a bodhram player
@@Gael4ce Admittedly I did double check the spelling. I always want to use a 'u' instead of an 'a'. So I spelled it right, but was unsure. Very cool that you play. I've given it a try at a medieval event. Love that sound.
Loved this!! Really enjoyed the game play at the end. Looks fun. I'm hooked on Subsistence atm, but might have to check out Warframe sometime. Thanks for the reaction/analysis/game play and hearing the original! It really did make a difference knowing the story behind the song. It was beautiful.
So cool, that you added the gameplay connected to the music, since I never played this game
Thanks! I really appreciated the game play. I didn’t get all of it, but enough that the next time I hear it I will be able to put it into context. I think I’ll understand more of the analysis and references to the game. And I now know why I don’t play- my reflexes are too slow and I’m too easily distracted by appreciating the artwork.
You are very welcome. I’m glad you enjoyed this, and hope it does indeed bring that extra context next time you listen.
There are definitely games on the slower side - Eastshade is literally a game about roaming a fantasy world painting things - but something like this requires a reasonably high degree of hand-eye coordination and dexterity. (I thank playing the piano!)
Thank you so much for your support - the SuperThanks means a lot!
I loved your theme for this month. Can't wait to see what you do next!
Thanks
You are most welcome - and thank you so much, Gillian! Very kind of you. :-)
To me, the VoicePlay version seemed not as melancholy, and as very determined. Sort of come hell out high water mood. Perhaps because the drums reminded me immediately of the Drum Corps sound, and that militant attitude.
The “eye” reminded me of Sauron - that menacing feel. ( but then I’ve been re-reading Tolkien😊). Yes, I’m mixing fantasy worlds in my head😂. So I’ll add that Layne’s sounded a lot like R2D2 for a moment and looked very pleased about it!
I’m not a gamer so appreciate the view of Vala’s world. I had listened to the song but couldn’t put it into context with just the cover art.
I thought he sounded a bit like R2D2 too! Just slowed down.
SPACE PIRATES! ARRRRG ME MATEYS! 🤣💜
I love their version but had actually not gone to listen to the original until now.
