      Exactly! Sometimes the pauses themselves can be a little offsetting, but at the same time, with these reactors who actually know about the depths it takes to produce music/videos you can learn so many things! This is why I'm grateful for reactors like Peter, The Charismatic Voice, Maggie Renee, Tank The Tech, etc. Watching their reactions I've learned quite a few things I didn't know before finding their pages. Knowledgeable reactors are truly a blessing!

    This was written by Edvard Grieg for the play Peer Gynt. the mountain king is a troll who wants Peer to marry his daughter and the end is Peer running away from the trolls. The Layne carrot had to make an appearance! This is truly "voice play" and I would love to sing with them on it. So much fun!

    Notice how Cesar stirs the pot with a big spoon & sneaks some potion in the pot & makes a sneaky head turn to Lane & Eli points to Cesar all at the same time. Cesar then gives the potion to Layne to sip from the spoon & intentionally makes him drunk.

    Layne did do the arrangement for this one. He and Geoff are the primary arrangers for the group. I really think this song should have an note at the end of the title. In the Hall of the Mountain King: Layne was drunk.

    • @maeco7
      @maeco7 Рік тому +29

      Geoff actually did a piece of this arrangement (he's listed in the credits in the description box as having done "additional arranging") - I've gathered he arranged the swing-ish section. It's definitely mostly Layne's insane brainchild, though 😆 Just a note for Peter that Layne and Geoff usually split all of VoicePlay's arranging 50/50, with Eli occasionally doing some arrangements alongside Layne.

    Geoff training as an opera singer might be the least likely of all the acapella folks since he's noted in the past that he's a very quiet singer, but it would be super interesting to hear Voiceplay do their take on more classical pieces. Elizabeth (not the singer here) over at TheCharismaticVoice has interviewed both Geoff and Layne about VoicePlay arrangements, and some of their during COVID songs have the sheet music posted.

    When Lizzie first did a run through with Layne, her comment was that he didn’t have her sing really high on this one. So he did add the higher parts near the end.
    Lizzie has recorded with them before: the high ethereal line in Frozen 2 and the line over the five of them beatboxing in Greatest Showman Medley. But the only time she was on camera was Just Sing.
    I’m so happy Layne got her to do this one with them. And so happy Layne continues the insanity with their Halloween video for this year. It’s been a little delayed because he lost power due to the hurricane, but it should be out this week or next.

    Even though there are no words I was riveted watching this. The sense of humor and the Lock, Shock, and Barrel masks in the tree branches are fun Easter Eggs from Kidnap The Sandy Claws. Layne's arrangement he gets his killer carrot into the cauldron at the end. The body function noises just cracked me up. She told the boys that she thought she was supposed to hit really high notes and that there wasn't anything super high for her to hit.

    Love your reaction and analysis :)
    The hall of the mountain king / Dovregubbens Hall is by the Norwegian composer Edward Grieg for the play Peer Gynt by Henrik Ibsen.
    The costumes are likely a reference to the play where Peer Gynt masquerades as a troll (a norwegian one, which are many and varied and not necessarily evil etc. (Also they usually have tails, not horns😉 fun fact))
    Peer Gynt tricks the trolls and gets away basically.

    Geoff and Layne split the arrangement/video just about 50/50. Geoff did "additional arranging" in this one according to the credits. He also arranged their last one, the heartbreaking I Can't Make You Love Me.

While amusing, the number of reactions of people who were just gobsmacked and had no idea how to react was kinda disheartening. I mean, singing to The Hall of the Mountain King was something I always did as a kid (and still do as an old lady) pretty much just like Voiceplay...just not nearly as good. Agree about the sheet music. The written music for orchestral pieces often has instructions to the performers about how to perform various bits; both standardized things like "staccato" and also custom instructions like "angry Phillip Glass". I'd be really curious if this arrangement has any of that sort of thing.

  • @janetdw

    It was a joy to see your enjoyment of this piece. Leave it to VoicePlay to take a classical piece of music turn it upside down, inside out, and make it into a slapstick comedy. And make it work!
    I remember hearing this to a Bugs Bunny and Elmer Fudd cartoon. Elmer was slowly sneaking up on Bugs and they just went faster and faster. It’s pretty amazing how much classical music is used all the time and we don’t even know it. I was astounded to find out that the Golden Grain macaroni song was from an Opera!
    As they add ingredients to the pot and take a sip, their voices mutate. Geoff and Cesar wisely abstain and their voices remain constant.
    You missed the bodily functions! You were rocking out. It starts with Cesar’s little squeaker, followed by Eli’s spit, Geoff’s snotty nose wipe, then Layne’s impressive belch.
    Geoff has a video on how he arranges for VoicePlay and himself. And it doesn’t sound like he commits to putting it down on paper because it changes so many times as they’re trying to get it to sound the way they want it to. (But I could be totally wrong. )
    Layne did another one within a few weeks. He was also the one in charge of their Halloween video this year in spite of having a hurricane come through and his electricity wiped out. I’m not sure how it would fit in with your analysis but it’s entertaining as hell. Lauren Paley, whose TikTok singing DingDong went viral, was their guest artist with Elizabeth Zharoff, Charismatic Voice, doing voiceovers.

    Btw- my fave Voiceplay humorous/educational reaction slot just got taken by The Fairy Voice Mother- she reacted to Oogie Boogie and was …aggressively gobsmacked 😆 Well worth a watch-she’s studying Bass voices at the moment.

    Missed seeing you react to VP lately, so glad you caught this one. It is SO much fun!! Elizabeth teased Layne that he didn't even have her sing high in this one. She was in the Frozen II Medley. Such a beautiful, ethereal voice. I'm so glad she was featured and really do hope we see her again. Layne and Geoff split arranging about 50/50. We're hoping to hear more from Eli if his life calms down to a dull roar. 🤞

    Personally I like to watch your analysis before I watch the video. I find it helps me hear the notes and musical elements better because you have brought them to my attention and I am therefore alerted to them. So while it might be better for some to watch the video before the analysis, for others the analysis may improve their enjoyment of the music.❤

    Hello Peter!
    First I really love your videos and all the stuff you are doing alone/with the bass gang.
    Some little things that you missed:
    1. 20:40 was a C#1 not C1. Also in you said that Geoff "Don't like to go below C#1, but in VoicePlay's cover of the main theme of Halo he sang a really good B0.
    2. 25:10 was a D6 to C#6 not a G6, but I believe that she can do this cause in the "Frozen 2" cover she was singing the high note at the background (up to beautiful E6)

    This is the most giggle worthy video VoicePlay has ever done and they've put out some fun videos. This piece was written by Edvard Grieg as part of the Peer Gint Suite.
    You should review the video Geoff put up Saturday. It's Ghost Riders in the Sky and, rather than the usual 4 Geoff's, there's 5 of him singing the song. I think you'd enjoy it and all of your subscribers, including me, will learn something.

    This is an instrumental piece so what they are doing is very creative. Your explanation of some of what they were doing with their voices was actually interesting...Basically these are trolls in The Hall of the Mountain King having a conversation while making a soup or potion...the ending is very fun. The Hall of the Mountain King was composed by Grieg and Lopez in 1876 as incidental music for Henry Ibsen's Peer Gynt Suite and was later expanded into two orchestral suites. One of the things that is a fun visual most don't catch. Ely at the beginning is about to add a carrot and Elizabeth (?) Knocks it out of his hand. At the end Layne adds a carrot and they all poof except Layne who looks very pleased with himself then gets an uh oh look on his face right before he poofs as well...

    • @janetdw
      @janetdw Рік тому +1

      Actually there was a debate about that. Elizabeth verified that it was a finger and not a carrot. I believe it is a reference to the original. There is a choral version and there are actually words to that part of it. One of the lines is “may I hack him on his fingers”. It’s when the trolls are chasing Peer.

    • @kirstenmorris4314
      @kirstenmorris4314 Рік тому

      @@janetdw I have never heard a choral version not seen reference to one but that isn't important.If it was a finger so be it...looked like a carrot to me.

    Hahaha, in the hall of the mountain king is insane in its own right. Ugh the left hand rhythms on the piano are a paino. Usually in the second bit where it starts getting a little higher, the left hand has to almost roll over on itself just to hit that deep note, every single time, then go back and do it all again for at least half a page to get that parching affect from the left hand. Major respect whenever anybody tackles this piece.
