Hi there! My name is David, and on this channel, I react to videos, mostly of musical artists (with a focus on a capella).
I consider myself to be a jack-of-all-trades in many ways, and so while my analyses may not go into the extreme depths of many other reactors, I hope to be able to provide a wide range of insight, thoughts, and discussions.
If you enjoy my work, please like my videos, subscribe to my channel, and we'll see where this goes.

Reaction to and Analysis of Majestica's "Ghost of Christmas Past"
My reaction to Majestica's "Ghost of Christmas Past" from their album "A Christmas Carol," written by Tommy Johansson (I believe - please correct me if I'm wrong). "Hark! the Herald Angels Sing" melody based on "Vaterland, in deinen Gauen" from "Festgesang" by Felix Mendelssohn, and adapted by William H. Cummings.

David: You're a funny bunny! Timmy: Excuse me!?! I am NOT a bunny, I'll have you know. Now pardon me while I go back to looking bored. 😂
Thanks for a great reaction! I love Majestica's entire album "A Christmas Carol"! Tommy is a master at mixing different pieces of music together so that it becomes a single piece. The music in "A Christmas Carol" sounds a lot like film music. Tommy could definitely make music for films in the future. The short piece that you thought sounded like it came from a circus (19:40 into your reaction), it comes from an old Disney film. The film is called Santa's Workshop and comes from Disney's Silly Symphonies and it is from 1932. Why does Tommy use that particular piece of music here, and how do I know this? This piece of music is simply Christmas for us Swedes. This is because we in Sweden have had a tradition since 1960 of watching a Disney mix on TV every Christmas Eve at 3:00 PM. All Swedes know both the films and the music in this mix. It is a deep-rooted tradition that all Swedes have grown up with. Most of the older films have remained the same over the years, but Disney also shows parts of new films in the mix. The film Santa's Workshop is available on UA-cam and 4:00 minutes into the film this piece is played. Search for: Santa's Workshop (1932 / 2006)
The March from Santas workshop, is on Disney Wiki credited to composer Frank Churchill, who did many of the Silly Symphonies, He more or less borrowed the whole piece from Schubert Military March op 51. ua-cam.com/video/iA6QESmhhoc/v-deo.htmlsi=rsAxABCQg5nlWbkE I've never been able to ascertain if Tommy did the animations here himself. He did the animation for the video Glory of Christmas, which iss on the extended album of Majestica. Not being content of being a musician, he's also good at drawing.
Hi David! I am so glad you reacted to this. I went to your playlists and found The Ghost of Marley first. I love your Tommy and Majestica reactions, it makes me glad that you take your time and really dive into the song/video. Thank you so much for the great reaction! Happy New Year to you 🎉
The guitar when it slows down and there are fireworks are from a Swedish Christmas song "Jul, Jul, Strålande Jul", (Yule, Yule, radiating Yule) and the very last huitar outro starts with the song "Julen Är Här" (Yule is here)
Since Tommy left Sabaton nearly a year ago he has been concentrating on his YT-channel and solocarreer as a singer. Majestica has also released 2 new singels. "A new beginng" a pre-album singel and "Powertrain" which is the titletrack from their upcomming album which will be released 7th of february 2025. Just now are Majestica touring in Germany. They have shows booked around Europe next summer. It has also just been announced that Majestica will play at Wacken Open Air next summer. Wacken is the biggest metalfestival i Europe.
This record is masterpiece, listen to it all year around and Tommy is a superb songwriter. Great and interesting reaction as always. Thanx and Happy new year.
The visualizer is a smart depiction of the story. The high intensity seems a bit abrasive to my ears, so I was relieved when we reached the backing chorous solo before the grand ending. Thereafter, there seemed more variation, and it provides a breather and really set up the tone for the end. I would have appreciated a bit of that sprinkled in somewhere else a bit (I'm not one who listens to this type of music on a regular basis.) Oh, and hello to kitty Tommy.
Geoff despises repetiveness. He will vary every repeat in some way. It's what makes his arrangements so rich.
Layne did the whistle in the audio, Cesar lip synced it at the beginning of the video. And yes, it was Layne as Santa during the credits 😊
You are mistaken. It wasn't the song that tanked in 1964, but the album it was released on. The album was Wednesday Morning 3AM. I still have this original album. Sounds of Silence was NOT originally released as a single in 1964. And then someone recorded and released what was described as the "electric version" of the song in 1966, and that was when the song was first released as a SINGLE and went right to the top of the pop/rock charts. And the "electric" version wasn't that much different than the original Folk/Gospel style version. I have both original recordings of this song. 🙂 The "electric" version really helped the song, though, because Folk music was fading in popularity and pop/rock was rising. I can see why Wednesday Morning 3AM tanked. There were only 2 good songs on it. Bleeker Street and Sound of Silence. Bleeker Street starts out with the same message, highlighting the lack of communication & emotional connection. But while there is still hope at the end of Bleeker Street, there is no such optimism at the end of Sound of Silence. Instead, it's JUDGEMENT TIME. The words of the prophets are the WRITING ON THE WALL. It's a truly dark, sad hopeless song! And my all-time favorite. The song is beautiful and timeless. And we would do well to heed the warning!
Hi Timmy! My ginger boy Butterscotch is here watching too!
10:14 am here
You ALWAYS teach me/show me new things. Love how in depth you are.
Thanks for this - well worth the time, even though it's taken me a while. Happy holidays!
Two videos from you on Christmas day is a great day!! Thank you for the best Christmas presents for us!! Geoff really made this an epic song for sure!!
So happy to see your reaction to this on Christmas day!! This is so much fun indeed!! Good eye spotting Geoff's phone 😂... I'm glad that you noticing the last chord of nobblin goblin part!! Umm don't google what nobblin goblin means... 🤣🤣
You DID catch something I had missed (and I've seen it several times!) As usual, good ear and thank you for your ramblings!
I just had to say I really enjoy watching your reactions! Many I have seen, seem to fabricate or overdramatisize their love for something. But one can tell that you just… genuinely love music. And appreciate it on a deep level. (And, of course, it doesn’t hurt that your first two reaction videos were to arguably one of the best arrangers on the a-cappella scene today. I’m so glad you decided to keep reacting and analyzing, even two years later!)
I love the amount of attention to little details you put in your analysis, David! Thank you for that! (Love your shirt 😉!)
Wasn’t this so good??? ❤
Yours was the reaction l didn't know l was waiting for😜 I love in depth analysises, as l am musically illiterate, l only know, what l like and l love to be shown WHY! And with VoicePlay and solo Geoff there are always so many details contributing to the fun, it is amazing. Thanks a LOT for this. It was really educational and l subscribed for more!
Wow is the word of every reviewer I have watched. Thank you for sharing your multitude of insights to this powerful rendition by Disturbed. If they never sang anything else, they will be remembered forever for this one!!! I can't get enough of it!!! David's voice, awesome!!!😊😊😊
Am I the only one who hears Rains of Castamere when Geoff is singing the "Ahs" and humming sections? How delightful this was. Loved your reaction!! Happy New Year!
a bit more in-depth history of the song, ua-cam.com/video/E3tyiOpX-Gc/v-deo.htmlsi=unBUfm-rwLcJedAL I really enjoyed watching your reaction. Thank you.
💕🎵🎶💕 Love your analysis 😍 I think Layne does something called throat bass to make those low notes? Are there any beatboxers here, who can explain what that actually means? @clownreacts?
Thank you for pointing out so many inner workings I hadn't even heard until you mentioned them. Fabulous 'dissection' of this beautiful dramatic rendition of Carol of the Bells! Happy holidays to you, David!
Thank you for this analysis. Many reactors have commented on the excellence of the arrangement; Mortius, for example, commented on how Geoff's singing is always excellent, but here, his overall arranging rose to meet that level. You're the first reactor I've heard that actually focused on that arrangement. It occurs to me that all the movement in the background is suggestive of how all the church bells throughout a city would be ringing in different patterns and overlapping with each other. BTW, the UA-cam channel "12 Tone" did a recent video on how Leontovych came to write "Shchedryk" (in support of Ukrainian independence from Russia), and how the tune came to be associated with Christmas in the U.S..
Thanks for the info about what that other channel covered. It sounds interesting and I’ll be checking it out
Maybe you've figured it out by now, but the stockings have everyone's initials on them - G, C, J, E, and L. Also the melody connection you made regarding "hope you've not been bad" may *potentially* have some weight to it - it's not part of the original song; that whole "he's coming for you" is a VoicePlay original bit, and has been since this was first covered on their Peppermint Winter album in 2012! (Or done at their live shows at Disney World, whichever came first.) Also I'm happy you noticed Geoff's pleased look during one of Eli's solo parts - it makes me happy and nobody else has mentioned it in reactions!
"I'm gonna make you think you know what's coming next and then I'm gonna do something else - I love that!" YES!!!!! Thank you for a wonderful analysis, David!
"It took a long time and I was tired." - David, this might surprise you but I find you to be one of the most quotable reactors out there. some of the things you say are both so relatable and so matter-of-fact that they have me giggling and then trying to memorize them to use later myself :D
this is epic and it got 1 million views by Christmas day! ❤
There’s a reason why this video of Geoffs has hit 1 million views in 2 weeks 😁😁😁 7:34 I love the fact it is Geoff singing solo until they all come in for the “all carolling” line as carolling is obviously a group effort. Clever 😂
💕🎵🎶💕
Merry Christmas David 🎄🎁🎊 Love this arrangement by Geoff and I said to my husband, when I first heard it "Listen! He does it again...he's teasing us" 😂🙈 Thanks for your reaction 🫶🏻
I was so happy to find that you'd chosen to react to Geoff's latest masterpiece - thank you! I always hear and learn more from your detailed analyses! Hope you had a lovely Christmas!
You are one of the few reactors I enjoy even more when the video is an hour or more. You point out the intricasies of the music and video in such an enthusiastic, enjoyable way. I love that you listen to & watch the entire way through first. Thank you for your knowledge & dedication. I will watch any Geoff or VoicePlay reaction you do.
Exactly!
Unfortunately, they’re not selling the tree topper. They had some 3D printed, but just enough to send out as gifts to their top level patrons.
*sad* That topper needs to be in the merch shop for next christmas 😥😀😍
Omg I would LOVE to buy that for one of my 8 trees!!
@ unfortunately, they’re had enough problems and expense with the ones they did that they don’t think selling them would be a possibility.
It is a freaking masterpiece, along with all the connotations associated with the word, not just a superlative! Excellent review! As a singer trying this lower end of things, and a musician, there was a lot of references to the track. It is definitely a magnificent work. I not only see the impact on the Iterwebs, but I'd imagine a lot of traditional music folks are going to notice this work. Perhaps something soundtrack, since its nature is very cinematic. Who knows, other than I know I'm really glad he did this.
Thank you for such a detailed analysis for this spectacular performance. Because I have no training in music ,some of the things you say sometimes go over my head. But I’ve deliberately chosen to follow detailed reactors over those who simply stand and make faces because it’s the only way I’m going to learn at this point in my life. More and more often when you start talking about something technical I at least recognize what you’re talking about even if I can’t identify it without assistance. My second favorite perk of being a VoicePlay patreon is the karaoke track because I am able to hear a lot of the things that people like you catch immediately. He doesn’t do that for his solo performances☹️. After this I’m going to have to go back and listen to the instrumentation more carefully on some of my other favorites. I sometimes catch a bit but not to the detail that you spontaneously pick out of this thunderstorm of music. I love that he deliberately slowed everything down and added a lot of very deliberate pauses. Those give us a chance to catch our breath which is a pretty good thing because this is a breathtaking performance. As stunning as those deep dark notes are, my favorite part of this is the one part (oh, how they pound) where he slightly altered the key, at least from the comments I’ve read by people who actually understand this stuff. This would’ve been a great one to have Angie with you, but I think your head (and mine) might’ve exploded! I’ve listened to analyses by a few other favorites and I’ve learned something different about the piece and the way it was arranged from each one of you. Thank you for that Christmas gift. I wish you the happiest of holidays. 🌲🔔🎄🔔🌲🤯🌲🔔🎄🔔🌲
Merry Christmas 🎄. As always delighted by your insightful reaction and analysis
I bet you'd appreciate Huldra's transformative remix of this and another classic cover...especially the ending. ua-cam.com/video/eRy2Nz75rik/v-deo.html
Still in AWE of this performance! Great breakdown.
David, thank you so much for explaining the background orchestration that contributes to the vocal lines. I was so focused on the lyrics that I completely overlooked much of the music that enhanced the performance. Geoff is such an amazing talent, and your reaction and analysis proves it.
Thank you for posting this, despite the technical difficulties. Fascinating analysis, and I love your passion for how Geoff confounds our expectations. Thank you for a lovely year of reactions. I'm looking forward to your adventures in 2025. Happy holidays!
Great job. Merry 🎄 ❤
10:44 pm here in Michigan.
They had a lot of fun with this one which is a bit of a tribute to camaraderie and friendship and their willingness to share with all of us. I really enjoyed the Satchmo improv that J did at the end. It’s a nice tribute to the original artist. They used a robotic arm (I think with multiple cameras) that was also on a track so they just watched where the camera was and are always looking at us as they sing. Maybe because I first heard it from Harry Connick Jr, but I’ve always thought this sounded like a New Orleans sound song and this really gives me that same feeling. Another reactor just happened to pause at least twice during one of the morph sections and it was quite creepy. At one point Cesar had two mouths😮. Between the lyrics and the way they arranged it, it is a tad creepy. Your analysis made it more clear to me why that was. I think it’s funny that during the “running and running, he’s coming to get you” section all the guys are reaching for J just like they were all after him in Thriller.
J was a permeant member of VoicePlay and was actively recruited by the U.S. Navy for the band/vocal as a bass. He is able to come and play with his friends whenever he has some time off (leave). No one knows if he will return at the end of his enlistment - or at least they aren't saying. I think he has 2 or 3 more years to go.
Lovely job, as usual, David. Peter Barber's reaction analysis includes a lot about the plug-ins Geoff could have been using, particularly the drums. A nice compliment to your analysis.
