Car guys act like it's difficult to learn than it is to feel good about knowing things other people don't, I recon. Working on cars can be annoying mainly due to hard to reach places but anyone can learn how it works, grow the skills, and memorize lingo. Worst part to me is probably not having the right tool with me when I need it haha
Thanks! That's great to hear. Let me know if there are any other components that you'd like me to cover. I might be able to make a video about it, or I might have one uploaded already!
Yes dude this helped 🤙🏽 2005 9-3 saab didn't come with an owners manual so have to learn everything online, car randomly wont turn on so checking all fuses 🤙🏽 key won't turn in ignition, interior lights wont come on, person who had it unplugged the radio and can't get any sound. Empty spots in a fuse box can also exist for hidden features. Such as for allowing a vehicle to be towed with no power, by allowing the transmission to shift into neutral and etc.
Thanks for the explanation! Particularly throwing light on wires leading up to fuse box, which I have never seen anyone discussing. So I understand that fuse taps are always a gamble, given that no manual says the amperage of wires leading up to fuse box. My thought is that it might be safer to put a fuse tap for a new circuit of 2A on a 10A existing fuse line than a 2or 5A. Because intuitively, wire leading up to 10A line might withstand 15A which can very well contain the 10 and new 2. But a 2A existing line might have been designed only for 3A or 4A, which is already high or borderline.
Except he makes the same error almost every maker of tutorials commits. He spends 3 or so minutes giving a basic description of what a fuse is and why it is important, presumably under the assumption that many viewers will lack even such basic knowledge. Well and good, but then he immediately afterwards speaks of an ECU under the assumption that the same viewer will know what the term means. How many viewers might we estimate know what an ECU is but do not know the basic concepts behind the value and use of fuses? If anyone guesses anything but zero I would be very interested to hear how they think that situation came to be. But I guess he can't be faulted too badly because everyone seems to do this kind of thing and the whole tutorial itself is considerably better than most automotive how-to vids.
I'm sure there are some out there that can be plugged in wrong and prevent me from being able to say they're all going to only fit in correctly, but most of them are either designed to only be plugged in one way, or has circuitry that forms an "X" pattern, (some four pin relays) so it can be plugged in two ways, but both directions work.
Nice video, but I would have added a section on the different fuse types, as they can be confusing, especially if ordered online. (The PAL line, MCASE vs JCASE, mini, low profile mini, micro2, etc.)
@@CarsSimplified i have a question the dash lights stop working all of sudden and they said that they have to remove the instrument cluster for 350$ ? could it be that its just the fuse box and i am only getting scammed ?
Well, that's a possibility, but if you don't trust your mechanic, you should probably take your car to another one. Pulling the dashboard apart is a very involved job that mechanics don't want to do if they can avoid it, so if they are indeed going in there, it's not something they would pick in order to put work on the clock.
My car usb outlet still has power for awhile after i turn the car off. I want to change it so the usb outlet has no power when the car is off. Should or can i move the 15A fuse for "accessory sockets" to a different empty 15A fuse socket?
Is power not available at the switching side, the control side, or both? Sometimes there are things that cut off power to the AC in order to prevent damage to the AC system or to prioritize engine cooling. Too much refrigerant pressure, an engine overheating condition, or faulty sensors that detect those things are just some examples that can cause that. I would check out things like that before replacing the fuse box. A faulty wire in the fuse box is possible, but other issues are much more common and require much less wire splicing.
This is a tremendous teaching video, which I will be re-watching and re-watching until I thoroughly understand. I see one of those awesome 04-06 GTOs in some of the shots. My question is this: I want to give my two after market gauges in my 2006 GTO their own power source tied to the ignition, so they only turn on at engine start. Right now I believe the shop wired them with the car audio which is on a switch, I think to the cigarette lighter in console. Thus when I turn the audio on with engine off, the gauges also turn on, which I do not like. So one person suggested add-a-fuse. Your video convinced me, no way. Another suggested I buy a spare fuse block and harvest a terminal from it, this idea I like very much (and your video discusses it). Do you agree? Would both gauges be able to work from a single added terminal? How do I do it? Any videos on this subject especially in a GTO? Needless to say, if you are anywhere near Phoenix AZ, I would gladly drive there and pay you well to do this.
Hi All good stuff thank you. Confused about running 2 fuse boxes. 1 running from the ignition switched, so that fuse box only live when the key is turned the other box would have a direct feed from the battery So which car circuits need to have there feed from the fuse box switch by the ignition and which circuits need the fuse box with the permanent feed directly from the battery?
Thanks for that complete video. I have a question. How can I match a fuse in a car fuse box and its wire ? In other words, how can I identify the wire that caries an identified fuse ?
That's a tricky one; I'd have to look into that and actually need to do so for a video idea I have (adding a fuse to a blank spot) so I may be covering this topic in a few months. The best I can think of right now is that you'd have to treat the fuses like a grid and count how many spots over and across it is, then do the same on the wire side, remembering that each fuse as two connections (unless you're dealing with Micro3) and which way they are facing while you're looking at the wire side.
Out of topic question. Can you wire up the blower motor to start working with the key in the accessory possition? Since keeping the car in the on position for a long time isnt very good instead you just want the heater to work and nothing else.
I want to put a led strip under the hood of a 2016 CTs what is a good fuse to tap into and also most videos I’ve watched shows using the fuse tap ! And also the led has a inner fuse so do I add a fuse along with the pulled fuse
In any situation where the fuse is connected in the car, if you can detect power on one side of the fuse and not the other, the fuse is blown. [This does not apply to relays or other components.] If voltage made it all the way to the first side of the fuse, and both sides are connected by the fused element inside, the voltage will continue to the other side.
Ah, key on should provide power to more fuses than just battery power, but some may require additional switches/relays in the on position. Generally I would count on key on to provide power, but if that assumption is wrong, there's a lot of wasted diagnostic time chasing other things. But in most cases, yes, key on and engine running, there should be power at the fuse.
Unless there is something in the fuse box other than circuit protection items (that's all you will find in there most of the time) there will be no ground. There will likely be some wires that are basically heading to ground coming from the coil side of the relays, but for those the wire will have to be followed, and ground will have to be confirmed.
Thx for the info I have a 2013.ext cadillac the bottom day light bulbs not working on both sides I've changed the bulbs and fuses still not working is there a way to check the wiring without changing the whole box need help thx
I assume you mean the typical fuse with the two metal connectors, because there are some like the glass tube ones that for sure will, but a lot of the spade end ones are decently durable. I could see some types that are made out of cheaper plastic, thinner plastic, or have become brittle with age breaking if pushed in too hard. I've had to push in pretty hard on some and have never had one break, but I'm sure it's possible. Damage may also occur in the fuse block itself, but that seems even less likely.
My main concern is identifying "fusible links." The picture you have of one--I've seen, but how can I tell the difference the blue plastic link and your ordinary plastic crimp joining two wires. I've checked all of my fuses and pertinent relays--all good, but, my power windows and blower motor are still dead. Thanks for showing a picture of it.
Hi i'm a lady also can you tell me if we unplug the battery before we check the fuses? When I turn off my car the cooling fan keeps running for about another 5 to 10 minutes on its on. Do you have any suggestions for an 2008, chev. hhr 2.L engine please? thanks for the video, Ty
how hard is it to remove i believe they call it a J case fuse? at 9:49 theres a bunch of pink 30, blue 20, etc, do they just pull out, I have one Id like to change on my car i can pull it out slightly but doesnt go any further. Thank you
So i bought my used car 2 years ago been running great got a check engine light tried to scan the obd2 port but no juice so I was told check fuse 13 so I did but in its place was a 20 fuse and so I looked over my box cover and almost all the fusses were different numbers is that a problem should I put the correct numbers on my box or just Change it with the number that was in there and was working for 2 years ?
Is it possible for the box to be bad where the relay goes into? My low beams aren’t working I pulled the relay tested relay it works. Put needle nose to the contacts and no spark I did same w high beams and they turned on and sparked
Great information. Question, I am trying to track down a charging problem. A prime suspect is an ac compressor replaced 6 months ago. The mechanic had some issues with the connector/wiring at that time. When I removed the a/c fuse inside the cab of 06 sportage, I lost all response from auto windows, (they wont operate with that fuse pulled). Is it normal or common for a fuse to control more than what the box diagram indicates ?
Thanks, and great question! While it is semi-common, those two components (AC compressor/auto windows) being linked seems a little odd. Components linked together on the same fuse tend to be either related or in close proximity, such as the power accessories/cigarette lighter fuse also providing power to the OBD-2 port. If there is some sort of relationship, like the windows being down disabling the AC automatically, that would make more sense, but I haven't encountered a car that does that. I have limited experience with Hyundai/Kia AC systems, though.
@@CarsSimplified Thanks for the response. I can say that till pulling that fuse, I knew of no relationship to the two functions. I would frequently start the ac up with some or all windows partially down till the ac got really cold on a hot day. Any suggestions for a next step?
I need help! One of my fuse connector is messed up: it appears it does not supply ground (or the negative). What do I do? Other fuses and relays are working properly in my engine fuse box when checked with a multimeter; it is just that one fuse connector that is not working. Please help!
I got three different LED kits. Do i just connect them all to the same wire to the fuse tap? What about the ground cant i just connect them to the same wire?
Is it possible if in the diagram of the fuses in my car there are two fuses that are supposed to be but in practice in the box itself they are not present and they also do not have the connectors to which the fuse legs are supposed to connect? My vehicle is a Kia Picanto 2013 manual transmission
Wondering where to find the 'hot' interior fuse - one always on/connected to battery... trying to wire up a dash cam. Pulling each and doing an electric meter is a pain, but seems the only way.
I know this is probably a very stupid question, however, im looking to find out why the relays i believe to be interchangeable are not. I have a 98 f150 and I'm trying to get my compressor to come on. Ive done a lot of testing and have more to go BUT i noticed that my manual shows i should have an ACC DELAY RELAY (FULL) and an ACCESSORY DELAY RELAY (FULL) inside under my dash on R4 and R5. Well there are no full relays at all. Before i start taking apart things that are much harder to check on why. I took what i thought to be a full relay from my junction box and when i went to place it in the R5 ACC DELAY RELAY spot its loose. All 3 of the full relays under dash have no visible metal/connectors (not sure how to say that). I was going to head to a junk yard later, but i will have to wait a day or so and would like to work on it in the meantime. You said in the video that it could be from the manufacturer just adding spots or open spots for things later. But the horn relay SHOULD fit into my ACC DELAY RELAY. Am i missing something??
Is it bad to put a 4-pin relay in a 5-pin relay slot in the fuse box? I accidentally placed a 4-pin relay into a 5-pin relay slot for my fuel pump. The car still runs fine, just wondering if I caused any internal issues, not obvious to the naked eye.
I have a 2009 Aveo lt hatchback and the lights on dash are off I check of the lights around the car everything works normally except the dash lights I check all the fuses and relay switch’s all good what’s wrong what can I do to fix the problem? If u don’t mind thank you in advance
I got a question... I have a 2012 Chevy Traverse wich I replaced the motor mount so I had to disconnect the fuse box located inside of engine compartment passenger I forgot to disconnect the battery cable located inside the car now the car doesnt start, no electrical power at all when I reconnected the possitive cable to the fuse box. I wonder what could go wrong?
How do you test the square flush mounted fuses that are the higher amp generally? Like the 20 or more amps. Do they have metal slots on the top like the smaller amp fuses do that allow a circuit tester to see if their good?
2014 Town and Country van. What is going on in my van is, the windshield wipers are going, all the lights are on in the dash, it say to check to service the tier pressure system, service the blind spot system. Plus it say the cadlic convert is gone. Getting pretty expensive with all that happening at once. I looked at the fuse box, and a few fuses are missing. Don't know how that happened. Have any idea's???
Appreciate the video explanation but have one more question: How do I locate the accessory fuse or relay in the fuse box located in the engine bay under the hood. If it doesn't exist what is the best alternate relay circuit can I share my after-market front lower bumper DRL lights with. This is for a 2021 Toyota Corolla LE sedan? I would appreciate your advice on this matter.
HI my fuse box is all messed up I looked in my manual and all the fuses were all mixed up I feel like there was some kinda custom wiring going on in there because I see some speaker wires how do you know if someone did work and modified or changed any components in the vehicle and maybe it changed the fuses that the correct fuses that were supposed to be there in accordance to the manual?
Hey I’ve got a question? Is it safe to keep a fuse out of its position and have it essentially “turned off”. I’m mainly referencing to my power antennas fuse that I’ve removed because it’s motor is stuck in a constant motion.
As long as it for sure doesn't control anything else that you want to keep available, then yes. Sometimes that's a method mechanics use to diagnose an issue. I can't imagine any vital stuff tied to the power antenna circuit but it's always worth checking.
While it's easier to add a new fuse circuit outside the fuse box, what you're asking about is something I am going to do in a future project (that I will of course make a video about). However, to answer your question for the time being, it will depend on what kind of infrastructure is already in the fuse box, but generally you will need to get replacement electrical connectors for that fuse box and install them (how that's done will differ between manufacturers/models/years) with the appropriate wire size leading to and from your new component. Finding the connector that is a direct fit for a given vehicle is probably the hardest part; that's the part I need to look into more.
I bought a dash cam and had it installed at a shop. The wires were winded around the metal pieces of a fused and the fuses were connected to the fuse box. I have doubts that this was not supposed to happen. Any advice?
So my horn was honking on its own so I took the fuss out and basically I don’t have a horn at the moment now my radio had been buffering and the next thing u know my car won’t crack cuz it’s not detecting my key fob (push start) can I just go under the hood and reset something or is this a deeper problem…. 2012 Buick Verano 4 door leather please help
While I can't diagnose that remotely over the internet, a lot of cars made in the past 20 years have the horn as an important part of the security system. If it gets disconnected, the vehicle might think it is getting stolen, and lock itself (and components like the radio) down to prevent that from happening. If the horn was honking like an alarm (on and off repeatedly in a steady pattern) it may either have a security system fault or it actually detected a break-in. If it was just horn on and no off time, or random busts of horn, there may be a short in the horn wiring. It could even be as simple as a horn relay that is stuck in the on position! Hopefully it's something easy like that. Let me know how it goes or if you have any questions, and I'll help if I am able to.
Well that's a tricky spot to be in! First, try to remove what you can with gentle manual methods like with a cloth or soft brush. To get what's left off, I think electrical contact cleaner should do the trick. I've never used it on wet or dry mud specifically (usually I use it on grease, oil, or water) but it's safe on electronics.

Why my Vehicle Spare fuse Slot has Metal Connection like other live Slots on the fuse box?
starter fuse passenger compartment driver's side
if there isn't any will the car start?
It depends on what's going on elsewhere, but typically a missing or blown starter fuse will keep it from starting.
So i bought my used car 2 years ago been running great got a check engine light tried to scan the obd2 port but no juice so I was told check fuse 13 so I did but in its place was a 20 fuse and so I looked over my box cover and almost all the fusses were different numbers is that a problem should I put the correct numbers on my box or just Change it with the number that was in there and was working for 2 years ?
this is what I want to know too
Is it possible for the box to be bad where the relay goes into?
My low beams aren’t working I pulled the relay tested relay it works. Put needle nose to the contacts and no spark
I did same w high beams and they turned on and sparked
Can I use blank fuse slots to power up after market accessories such as dash cam?
I can't find the fuse that goes to the trailor turn signals on a 2014 Ford truck 4x4
How do you remove the pink 30 amp fuses? Do you need a special tool?
Good video
I would like to electrically disconnect low fluid indicator in my 2011 cadillac srx is there a fuse that can be used or another way to disconnect it ?
The fuses in my fuse Box have to match the places of the fuses in my owner's manual?
Nicely explained! My Miata Infotainment system changes screens without me requesting it to do so. Any suggestions?
Thanks, Dan
I have a factory subwoofer in 2015 Chevy equinox I am trying to find out what fuse/amp powers that because no sound is coming from it
are there any extra points in the fuse box to which we can connect new stuff like dash cam etc ?
how can I learn online vehicle wiring
I’m calling the cops on this one.
My Dodge caravan minivan dash board went blank what can be , it starts and runs but don't mark anything in the dash board, thank you
I would like to know what the relay fuse number for my Ford 150 year 97
How would I test the voltage of my main power distribution box
I have a beeping noise for icey roads that I want to shut off. Do you know how? I have a 2018 mitsubishi outlander sport
Passenger side of my C7 corvette is not working , only part of the light . The part near to the edge of the fender.
What does +B mean on my fuse diagram? I have multiple fuses that say what they are, and then "+B" underneath it.
Very well done. Thank you.
Really good vid, thanks
i pulled one fuse out of those yellow squares and can't put it back in...too hard...what do i do??
What do i do if i need an extra fuse but the manufacturer only put in 1 contact?
OK How do I wire a brand new circuit into an existing fuse box? Add something new in a blank location?
@@CarsSimplified yesss it’s working now it said attempted theft!
That's great to hear! (Assuming nothing was damaged/stolen.)
@@CarsSimplified yeah no prob was attempted but everything’s good 👍🏾
Great vid...thanks man
Hi, what are the IG KEY fuse 1 & 2 for ? in a MAzda 2 2011. Thanks
where would the import direct fuse go?
What happens you don't have a cover and you got mud on your fuses what can i do?
Well that's a tricky spot to be in! First, try to remove what you can with gentle manual methods like with a cloth or soft brush. To get what's left off, I think electrical contact cleaner should do the trick. I've never used it on wet or dry mud specifically (usually I use it on grease, oil, or water) but it's safe on electronics.
Perhaps disconnect battery and flush with *distilled* water? Follow up with electrical contact cleaner?
