First snowstorm of the season! Solo HOT TENT camping. Cooking on a wood stove, woodcarving and more

- It is officially Hot tent season here in New England! What better way is there to test a hot tent than in the woods during a snowstorm! The Luxe hiking gear Megahorn was put to the test in the first snow storm of the season! I have heard a lot of conflicting information about this tent, so I set out into the woods, to go camping in a snowstorm to see for myself.
This particular snowstorm left us with some very heavy snow that was breaking branches and trees all night long.Good fun. The tent , in combination with my Seek Outside stove does make for a comfortable combination, I'll give it that. Speaking of my Seek Outside stove, this was the first night testing the glass door modification that I made to the stove. I can now see the fire!
For dinner I cook up some homemade sausage with peppers and onions on the stove. To top the night off, I start working on the last piece of an ongoing project, from a piece of wood I have had since a canoe trip in the Adirondacks in October.
Woodcarving in a hot tent, cooking good food on a wood stove , deep in the woods, during a classic New England snowstorm! It is good in the woods! I hope you enjoy this video!
Thank you , Justin

Brilliant solution for a stove window! Thanks for showing that, and providing a link to the company that cut it for you.
This stove mod is fantastic! Made such an amazing difference. I have made a full video on that mod if you are interested.
Love the glass door on the stove. That is a fantastic idea.
That glass door makes such a difference!
The glass stove is definitely awesome !!
It sure is! What a difference! I love it

Awesome. I love my Megahorn 🤟🤟
It's a great tent!
That Bucksaw is AWESOME 👍😎
Thank you! I love this saw! This thing rips!

I get that vanilla porter in the winter too. It's a good one! 🍻🍻
A fantastic brew!

Thank you
That’s exactly how I felt when I hiked in the first snow storm of this season. Super happy and high energy!!! Woo whoo
Yeah buddy !!!!
STay out of my woods
Come hang out sometime.....your secret is safe with me
That beer is right up my alley.
Good stuff! Delicious
I have the same tent and had it out it sub zero conditions with the vent cap open like you... my little stove, also from Luxe (3W Tent Stove), could not keep up too well. I wasnt miserable but can tell the difference when it gets that cold. Great video!
These are great tents for the money, so far! My Seek Outside stove has no problems keeping this tent heated. Had mine in zero degree conditions a few weekends ago, nice and comfy! If it starts getting too cold, close the tent cap. Just make sure you are getting some air flow at the base. And don't go to sleep with the wood stove burning and the cap closed. Thank you for watching!
@@ItsGoodintheWoods yes I only made the mistake once. I closed up the tent after that and it was all good.
@@johneldredge5315 Awesome! Enjoy your season! Happy hot tenting
Nice to see you enjoying yourself Justin. I think that must be one of your happy places. Man, we all need those right now....
Outside is my happy place.
made better by snow! Winter is my favorite time of year
Glass door is really cool! I wish someone could develop a glass stove with 4 glass sides and a metal top and bottom. Now that would be very cool!
I have thought the very same thing! That would be rad. Heavy, probably really expensive. But really cool
The stove is awesome watch the fire 👍
Thank you! I really enjoy this stove. It's a great piece of gear
Your laugh when mentioning the falling branches is super funny. You know you're a little crazy, cheers!
Hahahaha! Thank you! Good fun!
Awesome tip with the glass.
I recognize that nervous laugh at about 9:30 in the video. The storms picking up and your thinking "hmmmm, should I let the fire go out incase something happens to the tent or the chimney?" Is a gust of wind going to just take the chimney right out of the stove or will it cause the tent blow around enough it causes an issue with the stove?"
But like the rest of us you just nervously laugh and keep on camping lol
Absolutely! That is what makes it adventurous! Good fun that keeps you on your toes!
Great video 🤙
Thank you
Hello my friend, awesome 1st snow camp in the woods. Nicely done. Take Care and Keep Exploring The Outdoors.
Thank you sir!
WOOHOO!!! Here it comes
YES!!!!!!
Awesome brother 💪🤠👍
In British Columbia, we refer to that type of snow as "West Coast concrete."
I have never heard that before. Very fitting, I like it. This is some rugged snow. The aftermath of this storm was nuts. Lots of downed trees and power lines.
Thank you for making me smile
Namaste'
You are very welcome
I agree with you’r strategy on tent location. A 20# or 30# blob of snow might damage your tent, & ruin you’r trip, but a 10” x 40’ hardwood tree coming down on you = It’s Dead in The Woods, not Good in The Woods.
100% ! Dead in the woods.....lol We don't want that

You need to try Maui Brewing Coconut Porter. Cans don’t break and it’s a wonderful porter.
Thank you for the suggestion. I will keep an eye out for it.
Nice looking snowfall! Hot tent is on the list for me at some point...
If you want one, you have to get one! They are amazing! You'd love it
Great little wood stove
Would work here in Canada 🇨🇦 for ice fishing 🎣
This stove is amazing!! Such a good investment for me
It is extremely light weight. If you don't mind weight, there are better options.

Nice video, better and better!!! Thanks for sharing your experiences Justin 👍
Thank you very much.I appreciate the feedback
That looked like a lot of fun.
Tons of it !
That’s one awesome setup Justin! What really makes it is the glass you installed on the door. I always enjoy and appreciate your videos and many thanks for sharing!
That glass makes a huge difference. I am glad I did that. I appreciate your continued support Pete. Thank you
Awesome video bro
Much appreciated. Thank you !
the only thing that could have made this video better was a 3rd beer and the outside thermometer reading -17. Have more fun!!
LOL I agree. Trust me, plenty of fun was had !
Love my seek outside stove but now it looks like I'm gonna be in the market for some glass. Love the idea being able to see if it needs to be stoked or not without opening the door. 👍🏻
The glass is an awesome mod for these stoves! What a difference, and it only added 5oz to the whole kit! Here is a link to how I did it ua-cam.com/video/ZDVvVEgpZbM/v-deo.html

Gotta write I too like the look of your tent n stove, tent looked quite sturdy & that fancy glass stove door rather impressive. A beautiful Christmassy scenery you
This tent and stove combination is awesome! I enjoy it very much . Being able to see that fire is quite comforting. Thank you so much for watching and taking the time to leave a comment! I really appreciate it. Justin

BEAUTIFUL!!!👍up to CRAIG!!!
Craig is a good dude. We have become good friends
VERY nice 👍🙏🙏
Thank you
That was a lot of snow in a short time. We've still got nothing which is odd. I agree about the idea of having the stove melt the snow.. much safer. I've had that Breckenridge Porter as well 🍻
We got pounded man. And then, just last weekend we got another 2 feet of it!!!! That Porter is fantastic
First time checking out your channel. You already got me pumped to do some winter camping!
Winter camping is the best!
That was crazy and so good!
So much fun! We are expecting another snow storm to blow in tonight! WoooHoooo
Awesome, I'm glad that you survived another storm!! ❄❄❄ I'm really liking the stove door mod, it's like having the door open without having it open!
It's like the door is gone, but it's not.........It's amazing man
Great time out, love that ya took the pillow, I'm with you that was a very big hemlock. Very cool of Craig to do that, as you know hes a stand up guy. Great vid
The pillow was a great gift! Came in handy. I took my chances with the hemlock and it paid off this time. LOL. Craig is a good dude!

Heck ya brother! 🤘 Those shots of you walking with the lantern in the dark were really cool. Take care and happy tent tenting!
I was very pleased with those shots!
Fantastic video! There’s always something oddly satisfying about being outdoors in a snowstorm. Beautiful scenery albeit a bit dangerous with all the limbs breaking off. New to your channel but definitely excited to see more of your videos. Thanks for sharing.
Winter storm camping is awesome! So much fun ! Those snapping limbs were a bit nerve wracking......all part of the adventure Thank you for supporting the channel!
@@ItsGoodintheWoods Hey Justin, was that breaking trees then - - not snow off the tent? Wows. Sasquatch ?
Thats a lot of snow pal! We dont normally get much here feel lucky if we do.

Great video buddy loved it 🔥 fiiiire 100%
100% FIRE
Decent stuff liked and stay connected plus stay safe 🙏
That's AWESOME dude! Did you weigh your pack? How far did you hike to your campsite?
I did not weigh my pack. But I am going to start weighing the pack for every trip. About a mile from the closest road.
I winter camped outside of Bellows Falls, Vt. years ago with a couple of buddies - waaaay back when. We set up my dome tent on snow, it hovered around freezing, with snow dumping down on the tent all night. Lots of big hemlocks. Eerily similar to our tent site.
I watched the video where you made the glass door. Looks great in your tent!
Stop making me hungry right after I eat! 😁
Vanilla Porter - hmmmm; I have had that brew before, but maybe a different brewery. It was excellent. My go-to is stout, usually Guinness, but a black and tan or porter is always an option, sometimes a wonderful surprise. Wherever I go, I like to try a local brewery's craft beer. Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year! Your videos are always a pleasure to watch. Take care and God bless! 👍

Hello!
Dang that is one cozy little setup brother. Looks like that window is working out just right. Some pretty serious snow really pushing them skinny trees around. Hoping the storm we get tonight will be a good one like that. Another fantastic adventure my friend.
I hope you get plastered with snow! The window is everything I hoped it to be! A great modification that I am extremely happy with. We had so many downed trees.
Love the pink pillow! The food...once again...looks amazing! I would be terrified with the branches falling down all around me!
It was pretty intense. A good time! The pink pillow was niceLOL
Out there is about the only sane place left in this world.
I agree 100%
Justin. Loved that video. It was fun to watch. Great Job.
Thank you Tom!
Awesome trip... First real snow of the season... First thought is get out in it. Love it. Nice tent and stove set up, the glass was put to the test and passed. Food looked delicious. Another successful winter trip. I've been putting some new gear together for a winter trip... just waiting on snow here in Southern California. Thank you for sharing, take care Justin. Merry Christmas to you and your family.
Whats up dude!!! I love that glass door. Just what I needed , to see the fire. I hope you guys get some snow so you can use your winter gear! I hope you and your family are well. Merry Christmas to you and yours . Cheers my friend
Great video mate. I have just got a mega horn. Wish we got snow like that in UK. 🤙
Thanks man. I hope you enjoy your Megahorn. We are expecting another storm starting tonight!
Had to come back to tell you how much i enjoyed this Justin. Watched it on the big tv last night. :) Keep 'em coming. I love seeing the snow.
Thank you Virgil! We have more snow on the way......we could get plastered....Thanks for putting me on the big screen ! Cheers friend
Very impressed my friend ! Great set up for sure. And of course thanks for the shoutout ! It’s very cool hearing about your grandfathers gear, he would be proud of you Justin. Great to see the glass working out. By the way, those cracks in the night, wasn’t snow load, it was the great beast of the north ! Cheers !
Fuckin Squatch !!!!!
Something that I always thought was funny is when people set up their cameras to get a shot of them walking away, or sometimes rowing away in a canoe. It completely makes the video but I can't help but think every time I see it "damn now they have to turn around, go back and get the camera". Haha. Awesome content! And thanks for the video, that's enough evidence for me to order the tent tomorrow. Also subscribing and watching more videos! Thanks and safe adventures.
The things you have to do to make a good video....ya know! LOL It is a lot of work. But I have to admit, that is part of the fun. I enjoy it. Those shots add a lot of depth to the video, provokes the feeling of being there, like you said, it makes the video!
Thank you for subscribing to the channel Cody. I very much appreciate your support.
Hey Justin, you looked nervous everytime you looked up at the tent. That homemade saw looks really decent. Looks like 2 small axe handles. Oh, and awesome video by the way. Keep up the good work.
I was expecting a limb to come through that tent at any moment...it is a tad nerve wracking...but it makes me feel alive. I love that saw. Thank you for the support!
Suggestion for floor welding blanket. So you don't burn down the place while feeding fire or lone ember falling out. Also I don't recall you mentioning it but CO detector is essential.
I appreciate the concern. I have never used a welding blanket under my stove. Never been an issue , not in years of doing this. Not even a close call. I much prefer to run floorless for many reasons . I do have a CO detector and it has never gone off. I don't seal my tents up tight. I always have a lot of air flow.
@@ItsGoodintheWoods I do enjoy the floorless I usually fold mine up under the stove not that I've done it a ton only have about a week in my megahorn in backyard, but on a few occasions ive knocked some embers out. Can't wait to try in real wilderness. Any ideas for a bit close to NYC? Most places are closed in winter and with everything would prefer not to go out of NY state with quarantine and such found like one place around catskills but 7 hour driveis a bit much for a 3-4 day trip. Enjoy and keep it up
Do you like the interior tent add on or is it more hassle than really needed. I am going to order on of the Luxe tents for backcountry mule deer hunting and want to make sure I get the best system. Let me know your thoughts.
I don't use the inner tents with these tents. For me it's more of a hassle than it's worth. However, I don't really use these tents in bug season. If I was, I would certainly use an inner.
I have the winter inner for my Luxe MinipeakXL. I have only used it once in a years time and That was the first time I ever used the tent. Havent used an inner since.
Being that you are using it for hunting, you should probably get an inner. I'm sure the bugs can be crazy.
For the money Luxe makes an awesome tent. What tent are you considering buying?
Awesome video!! Came from Mr. Yankee's channel!! I smash the red button!!💯👍
Thank you very much. Yankee is a hoot!
congratulations withe your 12k subscribers
Thank you so much ! Very kind of you.Happy Holidays !
Next time take a whisk broom tied to a stick to keep that snow (melting) off the tent. Minimal condensation to maintain air flow and carbon monoxide vented from a closed space, my friend.
I always leave my tents very well vented. That being said, I was testing the tents ability to handle a snow load.
Great video man. Your definitely correct on the conflicting reviews of the tent and luxe in general. It seems like you really enjoy it though!
So far these have been great tents. I have had nothing but good luck with the products that Luxe makes. I enjoy their products very much. What you get for the price is hard to beat.
It's Good in the Woods that’s the thing. Do you really need the better material if your not dealing with 60mph winds? One can learn to deal with the snow. Michigan it may get to 20 mph once in awhile and unless your in the upper peninsula we don’t get to bad of snowstorms down here. You’ll love the upper peninsula man. Get 3-4 ft of snow often
@@BeebeOutdoors I would love to get out there someday!
For the price , I am willing to take the chance. LOL I was quite impressed with how well the Megahorn handled all that heavy snow.I have faith.
It's Good in the Woods man you’ll love it! I just bought 40 acres last year 2.5 miles from the nearest road in newberry. They have 3-4 ft of snow on normal years. Just bring a gun for protection from the wolves.
@@BeebeOutdoors Good for you. man That is awesome man! That sounds perfect. I hear you can get land cheap out there.
Great video, great outing. Thoroughly enjoyed it Justin.
Excellent carving considering it was dry versus green wood, very nice!
Boy, that 3-5 “ of wet snow is worse than a foot or more of fluffy dry snow! Yikes!
You showed 80* up high, what did you have ground level, 10-20* difference, maybe?
Thanks for sharing.
You are not wrong. That heavy snow is no joke. Its hard to tell , because I was sheltered pretty well from the woods, but we got 10" of that snow. We had 2 trees come down at home, one just barely touched the house, the other took out the duck fence. And our power was out for 18 hours! It was a crazy storm!
I would say your guess on the temp fluctuation is accurate. It was quite comfy! Next time out I will take readings from different levels. ...now I am curious.
Great video Justin! Nice work on the stove door, that thing is sweet!! A tree falling on me in the middle of the night is probably my biggest fear in the backcountry. Definitely a concern in heavy snow huh..
-Mark
Hey Mark, same here. That would not be very much fun......might make for a good video if one survived.....Thanks for stopping by bud

I found this channel cause I was scoping out hot tents. Is this tent a buy?? 2 ppl large seek stove and gear plus dog?? Thanks Justin, loving your vids so far!
This tent would be just right for 2 and a dog with a stove. Perfect. I have had 2 people with cots, and a wood stove in this tent. Plenty of room, light weight ish and affordable. This is a great tent. I love it.

Sweet vid man ! Breck brewing is great beer been there many times (before they sold out to budwieser) and now you can find that vanilla porter all over the country it kinda ruins it :/
That is one tasty beverage. I know what you mean. There was a time when I had to drive for hours, to stand in line for hours, to spend an absurd amount of money on Heady Topper and Sip Of sunshine. Now I can get it all over the place. It's not the same
@@ItsGoodintheWoods haha you say it like its a good thing 🤣 ill be taking out my mega horn for the first time this season by the weekend !
The glass door is awesome! How much did that cost ( start to finish)?
Why do you think the door panel area was letting moisture through, as well as the condensation where the logo is?
Keep up the good content man!
The glass door cost me about $80 total
I'm not sure why the door panel and logo area was collecting condensation. And it hasn't happened to me again. Odd.

Looking at buying this tent for me and a buddy. Is this big enough for two people plus stove?
This tent is just right for 2 and a stove. A few weeks ago I used this tent with a good buddy. 2 of us, and we both had cots, and the stove. Here is the link to that video if youre interested. I show the set up at the end of the video in a bit of detail. ua-cam.com/video/dyHuILa15kI/v-deo.html
Have you burnt any holes in the tent from sparks?
After 7 months of having this tent, I have not found a single one. Just a matter of time though.
Lol all those branches breaking is kinda sketchy. I've seen big trees like that one you were under come down during rainstorms while out hunting.
Sketchy for sure! Good fun. This past summer I was camping in a pretty good rain, It was very windy, and a big pine tree snapped and came down...very close to my camp spot. And I just happened to get it on film!!!
I put all my eggs in one basket with that tree...and I am very thankful it never let go.
Nice new tipi love the new stove window😍🔥 stay safe&happy!!(=✌💚
This is turning out to be a pretty good tent so far! Thanks bro
I really like that grandfather's knife🔪
I love this knife. I enjoy using it from time to time
Curious, do you know what the temperature was inside the tent in the morning after the fire had gone out? Awesome video, just got the same tent so I’m excited to try it out!
After the stove goes out , the temperature in the tent will drop to about the temps outside. Make sure to have a sleep system that is rated for the conditions you will be camping in.
Enjoy your tent! It's a good one. I enjoy mine so far. Happy hot tenting
What backpack is that? I have a 75L Molle pack but I don’t know how long it’s gonna hold up.
This is the Black Diamond Mercury 65. I have had this pack for years. It has been nothing but good to me.
Totally enjoyed the video. Tent stove awesome set up. You ever used or seen the stoves by a company called Pomoly? Keep up the great work!
Thank you. I have seen Pomoly stoves. I have no experience with them, but I know some that do. They appear to be very nice stoves.
I would have just knotted the inside of the wire instead of running it all the way across to the next hole.... all that inside exposed wiring is a conductor for heat and will cause your outside loops to get very hot.
Had I done that, the knot would be big enough to obstruct the clearance between the stove and the door. I replicated the design Seek Outside uses on their door. In 2 years I have Never had an issue with the loops on the stock door. I have used the glass door several times now, and I have tested your theory, because I wanted to know if that would be an issue. It is not. I can grab right ahold of those loops bare handed. The loops are not an issue I assure you. If it does get too hot, i'll just use some gloves or a stick. Not an issue
Nice show I love the stove how long will the stove burn win it it loaded up thanks
Thank you. Once you get a good bed of coals it'll go for a couple hours. However, as I found out on this trip, if you burn long enough to get the stove full of coals, it can hold coals all night long. This was the first time I have ever seen this stove hold coals all through the night, into the morning. I was astounded.
@@ItsGoodintheWoods Does that stove damper down pretty well without smoking up the tent? Probably could play with pipe height if it does. Cool vid.
What was the temperatures inside your tent?
I can't recall, this was a while ago. Much warmer than it was outside

This is my old Columbia Velocity Jacket. One of my favorite winter jackets. I have had this jacket about 15 years now. I have never even seen another like it.
Columbia Velocity Convert . That is the whole name of the jacket. I hope you can find one.
Could tell it was Autumn (or if you like, fall!) because there were still some dead leaves on the trees. Looked like heavy, wet snow.
Sounds good to be out there though with no bugs and no summer crowds. I would love to try it here in the UK but except for a select few areas it doesn't snow much here.
The north Atlantic drift can be a bummer. 😖😖
This was late fall! Good eye. This was a very heavy wet snow. Many trees came down and a lot of people were without power for 3 days. This one caused a lot of damage.
