- Joe Tex is one of my favorite Unsung artists of the 1970s. I dare you not to dance along to this video.
Joseph Arrington Jr. (better known as Joe Tex; August 8, 1935[1] - August 13, 1982) was an American singer and musician who gained success in the 1960s and 1970s with his brand of Southern soul, which mixed the styles of funk, country, gospel, and rhythm and blues.
His career started after he was signed to King Records in 1955 following four wins at the Apollo Theater. Between 1955 and 1964, he struggled to find hits, and by the time he finally recorded his first hit, "Hold What You've Got" in 1964, he had recorded 30 previous singles that were deemed failures on the charts He went on to have four million-selling hits, "Hold What You've Got" (1965), "Skinny Legs and All" (1967), "I Gotcha" (1972),] and "Ain't Gonna Bump No More (With No Big Fat Woman)" (1977). Joe Tex was nominated for the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame six times, most recently in 2017. - Wikipedia

You have a very talented cousin
I really liked Joe tex 👍🏾
Very talented and nice man, my Daddy brought him to Montgomery to sing. Shep Shelton was my father and I remember seeing Joe Tex when I was a teenager ♥️
I still miss Tex. 😥
...I always like Mr.Joe Rex, he called them like he saw them!
First time Joe Tex perform this song , It was televised was on Soul Train. The dancer who was pulled on stage with Mr. Tex was none other than Miss Damita Jo Freeman. She threw down!!! From there she became a "Star''.
Damita Jo was AMAZING on that performance! ❤❤
will never forget that performance.
That is my Auntie Mita!!!!
I had the biggest smile on my face while watching this...haha
Joe Tex like his songs
Me too
YESSSSSSSSS!!!!
@Dim
Joe Tex had a monster jam here and the dancers were the truth
Those outfits are everything!🌞
Tex continued recording hits until 1972, when he decided to pursue life as a minister in the Nation of Islam after converting in 1966. He came back to music after the death of the Nation’s leader, Elijah Muhammad in 1975. His last public appearance was in 1981. After that, Tex retreated from the public eye and retired to his ranch in Navasota, Texas with his wife Beliliah Hazziez. When Tex converted to Islam, he changed his name to Yusef Hazziez. He had five children: Earthra Doucet, Joseph Arrington III, Ramadan Hazziez, Jwaade Hazziez, and Joseph Hazziez. Joe Tex died at his home in Navasota, Texas from a heart attack on August 13, 1982. He was 47 years old.

Joe Tex would be in trouble these days. For the lyrics and the dancing.
Those are the coolest outfits on those girls! Far out!!!:)
The outfits were ahead of their time ❤
Funkin up the Funk! Seriously.. that's some serious wardrobe!!!
Remember seeing on soultrain. The young lady grabbed her leg and held it. The look on his face was priceless.
That was Damita Jo Freeman!! ❤
This just reminded me I was 9 years old and I'd be outside playing in the morning and at 11 a.m. I'd hurry home to watch the Soul Train
I went to see him perform 6months before he passed. In a former jazz club in L.A....The Parisian Room! Off of Pico. The saxophonist from Oingo Boingo, Dale, took me. What a night!
He was sososso underrated
I could see why JB was intimidated, Joe Tex kept him working. RIP to both legends.
This dude really new how to entertain this wasn't my generation but it put a smile on my face in 2021😆👍
Good that you realize how we have less and less fun nowdays compared with the old good times of that era..I call it A Decline
Some funky drumming!!!!!
What classic soul! The world was better place back then.

Stop it... You would have to be like late 50's or 60 at the least to remember this, if it was on TV
Taneka Roberts you know how it works. Face says says 20 something birth certificate says 40 something. It is true that black don’t crack. 😂 I just let people think I’m 29. 🤷🏾♀️🤣
@@TanekaRoberts I'll be 54 in December😊❤
I was a little girl, but watching Soul Train was a ritual for us, each Saturday afternoon after the cartoons❤😊
@@voodoochile4147 ❤❤

This Funk came to my attention as a 15 yr old . Bowies Golden years cemented this rhythm in my consciousness.
The 3 funkiest dancer's of FUNKY STYLE AMAZING PERFORMERS.

...Just what I needed on a Saturday morning, Yes Aye!!!
memories of the 70s
I was about eight years old when That record came out could not stop jamming to it then can’t stop jamming to it now. They don’t make fun records like that anymore. Damn shame.
I was around 5 or 6 depending on when it came out in 1972. My how time flies.
What I liked about music years ago was that everyone knew what the hits were. I didn't matter if you were 90 or 5, you knew what was on the radio. Now I don't get that feeling. With all the outlets for music, I couldn't tell you what the hit songs are. Soul Train, Casey Kasem, Ed Sullivan, we miss you !!

The house parties we had in the 60's and 70's !! Joe Tex music was a part of them!! We didn't get to see him dance a lot back then but he had the moves!!
Yes we danced anywhere at all times from portable record players, 🎶🎶 music from 🪟 windows, car radios, cassettes, DJs in the parks, block parties, at the beach. I am remembering doing those exact dance move as I dance around my room.. Waiting to see how low can you go how low can you go 🎶🎶🎶💃🏿🕺🏿🏥😷🥃. I love Joe Tex!!!! I saw him at the Apollo Theater when l was a kid back in the 1960s...68. My favorite song is "Tell Me Right Now". ( this song is very hard to get! I have his greatest hits CD. this rare song is NOT on any of his albums or cds) You can listen to this song ..right here on the UA-cam .

"Don't hold back now give it here".
“i’d be the next one to ease on innnn”. You know Joe Tex was a southern man
Great post!! Joe Tex was the man James Brown stole a lot of his moves from!!! Great recording artist left music for the Nation of Islam and came back to music and did the hit "I Aint Gonna Bump No More!" Great Post!!!
If that was his come back song 😂 he wasted time in the nation of hislam and we lost out on some year of good music. Joe Tex X
James stole his moves😂 you must have never seen james brown or maybe you confusing him with Eddie Murphy.
@@davidlynn3631 No. He actually did steal his moves & Little Richard was the one to actually confirm it They had both opened for Little Richard during tours - separately & a few times all together. He said he noticed James show changed drastically after watching Joe perform.
That was Rockin! Give it here!
Yes Janet Jackson and him on soul train was nice 🙂
Ooooooowwwwweee them were the days!!
I was ten years old in 1972 and I remember asking my mom "what was he asking for when he said give it here?" My mom said "go ask your dad" :)
I was today years old when I heard this song. Where has it been all my life? That was EVERYTHING!🤗 (those outfits...I live!🥰)
Oh...we had this 45 record when I was a kid!!!!
Did you have Skinny Legs and All, too?
Every time I heard Mystikal’s Shake Yo Ass, I thought of this song. Lol
He must have been an influence. Good ear!
hannibal090 every thing Mystikal did reminds me of this song
Years ago I heard the Blowfly song (on vinyl) titled: "Shake ya Thang". I think Mystical might have sampled that.

We had a hell of an era, musically seen! Feels as if all of the genres in modern music got initiated in those years! A course to/of perfection!
The first 10 seconds makes me smile. 😁🎶
