- Опубліковано 30 лип 2024
- Honey Cone was an American R&B and soul all-girl vocal group, who are best remembered for their Billboard #1 hit single, "Want Ads". They were the premier female group for Hot Wax Records, operated by Holland-Dozier-Holland after they had departed from Motown Records.
Honey Cone was formed by lead singer Edna Wright (sister of Darlene Love) with Carolyn Willis and Shelly Clark in 1969. They were the newly created Hot Wax Records' first signing to the fledgling record label. The trio had previous musical experience with Willis, a member of Girlfriends, Clark an ex-member of the Ikettes, and Wright, a member of a gospel group the Cogics. Wright and Willis were also "part-time" members of Love's group The Blossoms.
Honey Cone and Hot Wax's debut single "While You're Out Looking for Sugar" peaked at #26 on Billboard's R&B chart, but the follow-up "Girls, It Ain't Easy," reached #8 on the same listing. Their third release "Want Ads" proved to be their biggest success, topping both the R&B and pop chart, selling over one million copies, awarded with a gold disc by the R.I.A.A. in May 1971. - wikipedia

Right here! I have the 45!
@@EpitomeofALady22 sweet
Edna Wright had sick talent.
Legendary!!
@@EpitomeofALady22 I wish I had this on vinyl 🙂Lucky!!
Listening in 2024 Real Music Never Dies ❤
Can't believe that is 1971, sound so fresh, way ahead of their time
It was #1 too. I'm getting Jay Z / Kanye vibes in the beats with the Chipmunk Soul vibes
Sounds a lot like a Jackson 5 track.
@@AntwhaleNearfarThere was some kind of connection between the label that issued this song ("Hot Wax") and Motown. Forgot what it was.
Specifically “Sugar Daddy”.
@@guyintenn That's right, I forgot. HDH also had something to do with Invictus Records, I think, which issued The Chairmen of The Board. Correct? (or no?)
That’s my Godmother Shelly Clark!!! Honey Cone got that fire 🔥 🔥 🔥
Trifecta Kush is she still living?
yococomanolo yes she is, in great condition lol she still looks like a supermodel. I see her everyday.
Trifecta Kush yassss tell her I said slay on 🙌🏿
@@trifectakush Awesome! I loved this group when they came out...I was only 8! :-)
Whoa!😯 your Grandmother did she get paid from the Sample of this song by Mary Mary???
🕊 Rest in Peace to Edna Wright, 2/2/45 - 9/12/20, who led this song to perfection! 🎤 🎼
And as always the Funk Brothers provide the finest backing track to her and the Honey Combs vocal
The lead singer is Edna Wright, sister of Darlene Love. The lady on the left with the long hair is Shelly Clark. Shelly was an Ikette with Ike & Tina Turner in the 1960s, she has been married to Verdine White of Earth, Wind & Fire since 1980.
Shelly fiiirrre even by 2020 standards!
Luci nln Great 👍
Edna's the only one you can hear---not that I'm complaining.
Really? Wow...
Thanks for that info
If I happen to find a ticket back to the past, I'm going back to these times. Best times and music ever....
These are the golden oldies
I was born in 1971 but their hair, the dance and their voices are what I love about the 1970s. Beautiful women.
Young people this real music 😍❤️
I've loved this song for 52 years!💕
Same here!
Mee2 !
Meeeee 3❤
The radio played the HELL out of this song. I got SO tired of it. And 60-years later, I'm looking it up on UA-cam. 😄
Nice hot pants, tho, for real!
My beautiful black women, I was born in the early eighties and I love the older songs
A time when songs made people feel good and optimistic about the future.
Jamie Smith I bet🖤🖤🖤
I miss black women with our natural healthy shapes. Instead of the false narrative that we all are, "super thick' and fat, with queen ant shapes. Sigh..
INDEED
Im33 beautiful women bas in the days
When music was good and fun
FACT 💯
I remember them on that Tv night with grandma, mom and aunties
Fact! When the music was so good! I need a time machine to take me back there for a while!
@@jaybird8192 if they made a Time machine by now
I guess you had to be there cause this is an average radio song to me, there's nothing special about it (and I listen to Soul music)
Who's listening in 2019
Wow..awesome
Me!!! And I love it!!
Memories....I was 11 y/o and loved it though I didn't really get it then. LOL!!!
Born n 1965 Houston,tx and must I miss those times in acres home sub division
Just found ths song today. This sounds like clean up man in a way and they resemble an old school Desitiny's Child!
GIFTED voices, simple funky DANCING, and gifted sound....and pretty.
R.I.P miss Edna Wright love your group the Honey cone, your voice will last forever.
Which one edna?
@@falanajerido875 Lead singer....
My mom used to sing this in the kitchen when I was a toddler, while my dad was fighting in Vietnam.
I love this song. I grew up listening to old school music. My mom had a nice collection of old records. The beautiful sister in the middle is so smooth when she dance. I love watching her.
The one on the end is my new cutie ! (53 yrs late 😮)
RIP Edna Wright 🙏🏽❤
She has an amazing voice.
She reminds me of Jennifer Hudsan
They look like they enjoyed singing this together ❤ heard this a zillion times in my mom home.
Love this song as a child rip to Edna grew up.off this song in philadelphia knew it word for word me and my friends sang it not knowing the meaning of it at all. Here in 2024.
Why can't I get enough of this little gem- and in 2024!!! 🙂
I love old school music. I was 6 years old when that song came out.
Marica Philpott So was i
I love it...I was 5 and it’s funny how you can remember lyrics.
I was 9 years old.
I was 7,8
Yep I was born in 65 too
Wow, a live performance of this great record. Awesome.
I remember this song as a kid. I loved hearing it on the radio and my mom singing it.
These lovely ladies singing have me remembering how much more wholesome and laid back the vibe was back then. Love the song and the "hot pants" when they were in fashion!
great song and vocal, brings back memories of the old days
2021 anyone?..
We need these golden gems to resurface..
Born in 64 remember this being played on the radio... along with Freda Payne...and loved the Supremes and Four Tops...my parents were huge Motown and the like fans...my band mates don't even know I am a huge fan of this genre of music...Holland Dozier Holland were the greatest song writers on the planet IMHO...would love to do a HDH tribute act..,but I am an old white long haired Rocker...so I don't see anyone taking me seriously...but I will keep searching....maybe some day...
I loved the songs "Band of Gold" (Freda Payne) and "Up The Ladder To The Roof" (Supremes) and "Keeper of The Castle" (Four Tops).
@@57highland I love Diana, but "Up the Ladder" is the greatest Supremes song ever. Jeannie Terrell kills it, great voice never given her due credit.
At 11, this was one of my favorites...still is..my goodness gracious.
Excellent song back in 1971 still listen to it today 50 years later
Experience in love preferred, but will accept a young trainee....LOVE this old jam. My older sister played this on her 45 record player every day. Had me singing with her. Of course I was around 4 or 5 years old and only joined in the song with my fabulous "Extra! Extra! Read all about it". You couldn't tell me I wasn't a baby honeycone as my sister called me Lol!
Lord knows I miss being a child in the 70's...Life was great back then in D.C.
A great memory. What did you pretend was your microphone?
@@reelblack My Playschool airplane 😂😂😂😂😂😂
You would think a Barbie doll or a brush, but not me. I had to be extra-extra and sing into a huge indestructible toy airplane... Smh
@reelblack...as usual you’ve struck gold! Do you think you’ll be able to get “For The Love Of Ivy” starring Sidney Poitier & Abbey Lincoln?
I am a white girl born in 1969 and I love this type and era of music this is actually the first time I have heard of this group but I love them. When I was little my fav songs were Freida Paynes Band of Gold,Betty Wright The Cleanup Woman anything by Marvin Gaye and Tammy Terrell and Rocking Robin by the Jackson Five and Bubbling Brown Sugar which I forgot who sang it.I was a white girl who grew up listening to all types of music Soul,R&B ,Do Wop,Elvis,Credence Clearwater Revival,James Brown etc. I appreciate that my parents exposed me to different types of music !
bridget cafarella ‘60 here . I haven’t heard this in a LOOONNNG time, but I still remembered quite a bit of the the words. And the Clean Up Woman! I remembered that for years! And is now on my iPod lol. That, in my opinion is is the greatest thing about these newfangled gadgets. Man, we can get some great tunes on them, can’t we? And still for the price of a 45👍.
The Honey Cone string of Hits like "Want Ads", "Stick Up" and "One Monkey" solidified them on Pop and R&B Music in the 1970's
Lol
One Monkey (Don't Stop No Show)
Rest In Peace Edna Wright. You have fulfilled your mission on earth.
The vibe is exciting and relaxing at the same time, if that makes sense.
A beautiful time back then....No twerking, No cussing.....
I agree 💯%😀
People cursed and twerked (or whatever provocative dance) back then. My grandma is 80 and said they use to do a dance called The Dog. She curse like a sailor too 😆 Not sure why people romanticize back in the day as if them folks wasn't wild!
Anyway great song!
@@misstoyaj *oh yeah they were wild!! Only difference with then and now is kids didn't have easy access to to raunchy music back then. Also, they didn't play raunchy music on the radio. Very clear separation for the inappropriate vs the family-friendly stuff, but nowdays, parents are like "fukk it, my kids can cuss twerk and listen to nasty music 🤷🏻♀️"*
*there were cussin songs back then, but ppl WERE more respectful back then too,, yes.*
@@imrickjamesbiiiiitchhh6161 There was only occasional twerking but today it's the rule, it's in your face. And there was no cussing, that I remember. They didn't need that stuff, because they had real talent.
I love these girl's dance steps.
Perfection at it's greatest
Listen to that Bass Line... that's the way you play R&B!
I heard somewhere (forgot where) that it's Ray Parker, Jr (Raydio) on guitar in this song. Don't know who's on bass.
Classic song and vocals
Great song with a wonderful arrangement and lyrics
Great song 🎵.......loved it back then , still love it today...2021
Born in the early 90s and love old school music. ❤️❤️
This jam is still as HOT as it was when it was first released. Great memories.
Heard this song a million times and this is the first time I've seen it performed

Wow brings back memories❤
This is the early 70's. I was in elementary school when this song came out. Outstanding music.
This is when natural beauty was everything!!!! And still is!!!! 👑 👊 seeing Jet magazine in a video brings back great memories!!!!👊
I love how they are natural but still have on make up and are dancing and expressing emotions yet are classy and sexy and strong yet feminine. It was a great time to be part of the ADOS COMMUNITY. Everyone seem to understand the struggle and not out for quote "number one" ie their own selfish personal gain. There was a pride in being an "everyday people" Like the song by Sly and the family stone Sang. However there were also forces in play that would undermine all those COMMUNITY values mainly greed lack of education and all types of covert actions by the government to infiltrate and and undermine many of the community groups like the black panthers and the SCLC THE URBAN LEAGUE AND THE GENERAL TARGETING OF ADOS COMMUNITY WITH THE INFILTRATION OF DRUGS AND GANG VIOLENCE
They still had on wigs and make up like they do today. My sister had that long fall hair piece that Shelly Clark had I remember she got in a fight and some one pulled that fall hair piece out and her friend picked it up as she finished kicking the shit out of that girl! that was the early 70s, lol
LOVE THE HONEYCOMB.
1970s greatest music ever made decade of music
May you rest with God.!! Your voice/songs brought so many people love.!
Rest in peace Mrs. Wright
I grew up listening to your music. Every time I hear want ads I get up and dance.

Pretty ladies, they dont make em like this no more
I was in college, when this came out. Love the the good ol' RnB when music was real music!
I was in high school when this song came out---R.I.P Edna Wright-- I love the 'Honey Cone"
As much as I love what The Avalanches did with it, the original is IMMACULATE! The type of groove where you feel your soul smiling while listening to it!
This song is so addictive, I love it

My first time hearing the real song! I only heard Mary Mary sample it on their song ‘Heaven’. I love this!
So 1971- dig the hot pants! I used to hear this on the radio when riding the bus to school. Late 60s to mid 70s Soul is my favorite kind of music.
How are you doing today my name is Eric Moore
I never heard this song, I came upon this cause of Darlene Love’s sister. Such an upbeat song.
My mom was 18, just graduated high school, reminds me of her and how she was so carefree and beautiful RIH Mom
You were alive when your mother was 18?
i love this group, they are so kool, they really do represent the 70s just the way they are dressed and dance
I remember this. I was only 10 yrs old then, but the radio was such a big part of life with only 3 TV stations and a radio in the car and home. I listened to any and everything. This singer has a great and very unique voice.
And all you had to do was turn a knob and the station came on!! No fiddling with some half-assed app.
When music was music not no continual repeated motif that's talkin about nothing! Love those days!
