The band as you said are a bunch of talented dudes but also as someone who has dabbled in music the brits have probably the best mixing desks in the world. I know the Neve console was made in the UK ( what a legendary console ) plus many others. Now combine that with a good sound engineer and a producer you already have recipe for a good sound. Add Deep Purple to that stew and you have something special. My 2 cents worth.

In a song where everyone puts in an epic performance, Ian Paice's drumming steals the show and makes my arms sore to hear.
Paice is HIGHLY underrated. And I think he's happy that way. I was a HUGE Deep Purple fan as a kid. Read a ton of interviews, and books. There was ALOT of drama in the band.. and with 99% of it if Paice was brought up, basically what was said was ".. and Paicey just wanted to play his drums."

Ian Paice's drumming is driving this song. Those fills and rolls are pure gold.
There are technically two vocalists in this band David Coverdale the bluesy frontman and Glenn Hughes the bass player is the one doing the high shrinking.
Glenn Hughes has also done some great stuff with Tony Iommi and with Black Country Communion, as well as some solo work too.

When you hear that clean high vocal, it is Glenn Hughes the Voice Of Rock. This lineup was phenomenal. Coverdale and Hughes set the bar for tandem vocals in Hard Rock/ Metal.
Unfortunately his screaming is off pitch way too often in Deep Purple live recordings of that era. Imho he should have concentrated on playing bass and leave the singing up to David Coverdale who was much better in that 😅
@@stefan_becker Glenn Hughes has one of the most versatile voices I have ever heard. Do a dive into his love solo music. They may not be the best compositions but the guy can sing anything. And remember, there was no auto tuning back then. He did a damn good job.
@@stefan_becker well you need to hear him now. Sans all the excessive life stylings of that era. He was pretty much trashed all the time back then. He's still got that range in his seventies. Dave does not.
They didn't need Coverdale with Glenn Hughes. Coverdale sucked badly live.
I believe Uriaheep really had great Vocal Sequences and Harmonies before Mark III. But Hughes and Coverdale really were great together with different singing styles and voices.
Y’all gotta do “Child In Time” with Ian Gillan, the second lead singer the band had, who most fans consider to be THE VOICE of Deep Purple.

Two teenagers, 1970 something, probably close to alcohol poisoning, out in a field somewhere with a big bonfire with a bunch of others listening to Deep Purple!! Ahhh the memories!!! The two teenagers managed not to die and still listen to Deep Purple!
We used to have an area where we'd gather to listen to music with a bonfire going. Occasionally we would have alcohol but never enough for any of us to get that drunk but there was always a lot of hash n pot.

At this point Ian Gillan had left as vocalist and they brought in David Coverdale (later to form Whitesnake) and they also had brought in Glenn Hughes on bass (Trapeze, DP Mk III & IV, Hughes/Thrall, Sabbath, Hughes-Turner Project, Black Country Communion w/Joe Bonamassa, Dead Daisies w/Doug Aldrich), who is a great soulful, funky singer in his own right. As a result in this rendition of the band Hughes would often sing the higher parts, like in this song, you hear Hughes isolated in the pre-chorus, Coverdale in the verses and both in harmony during the chorus. Powerful! Great tune! Later when Blackmore left the brought in Tommy Bolin (RIP) on guitar from 1975-76.

Glenn Hughes also recorded 1 album as California Breed with Glenn on vocals and bass, Andrew Watt on guitar (played guitar, basically wrote and produced Ozzy's album Ordinary Man), & Led Zeppelin drummer John Bonham's son Jason Bonham on drums (Bonham, Black Country Communion, Sammy Hagar & The Circle).
@@user_t_o_m_i_c There were so many good band's in the early 70's ! Those were my high school years. We used to get together to listen to music and smoke a little. I remember friends having an album byTrapeze but i don't remember their music, listened to so much music. Good thing about y tube is that now I've been revisting a lot of music from back then. Trapeze is definitely another band I'm going to check out again.

"Burn' is definitely one of Deep Purple's best records... the next one 'Stormbringer' was also ahead of its time sonically.
Deep Purple went thru quite a few members... Rod Evans was the band's original vocalist back in 1968 -'69 -he recorded 3 albums w/ Deep Purple, but it was in a pop-rock style. His version of 'Hush' is still one of the best.
Ian Gillan was the 2nd vocalist, joining in 1969, and that was when Deep Purple went into a 'heavy rock' direction in 1970. He is considered the voice of Deep Purple on the strength of his albums - 'In rock' ... 'Fireball' ... 'Machine head'... & 'Who do we think we are'.
David Coverdale replaced Gillan in 1974 and did co-vocals in Deep Purple w/ bassist Glenn Hughes until 1976.
When Deep Purple reunited in 1984, Ian Gillan came back to the band... however, conflicts w/ guitarist Ritchie Blackmore got him fired in 1989.
Joe Lynn Turner (former Rainbow vocalist) recorded 1 album w/ Deep Purple in 1990, but his style of singing did not fit the band. Ian Gillan was brought back in 1993, but that led to Blackmore leaving Deep Purple soon after... thankfully, guitarist Steve Morse joined in 1994 and brought Deep Purple back to their current success w/ Ian Gillan on vocals.

Ian Paice is constantly phenominal as a drummer & never was fully acknowledge for his abilities. Great stuff in so many songs.
I usually don’t listen to Deep Purple beyond Ian Gillan but this song is growing on me. Ian Paice is hitting the heck out of those drums. David Coverdale’s voice goes well with this song! My favorite Deep Purple is still Highway Star for its guitar work.

It's David Coverdale, as you've identified correctly, who replaced Ian Gillan (not Gillian!). He sounds a bit similar to Dio, but if you listen more closely you notice the differences. Dio is a lot more controlled, David likes to cut it loose. LIke in "She makes you burn with a wave of her hand", that "wave of her hand" part would probably have sounded totally different with Dio.
You should do a comparison of "Mistreated", as performed by David in Deep Purple and Dio with Rainbow.
E: The other singer with the high voice is Glen Hughes, who replaced Ian Gillan in Black Sabbath (Gillan in return replaced Dio in Sabbath before that).
E^2: The very first lead singer of Deep Purple was Rod Evans. Check out "Hush", for example.

David Coverdale on Whitesnakes " Slow and Easy" is another Burner
What I always have loved about this song is the shared lead vocals between David Coverdale and Glenn Hughes ("You know we had no time" sections).
Written by Glenn Hughes (Bass/Vocals) as his first written song for Deep Purple. He sings it with Coverdale and sings it in his solo act today. He is the one hitting the higher notes. It was Blackmore who left Purple and basically took over Elf. Elf had RJD (Dio) as their lead singer. When Blackmore joined they changed the name to Rainbow
Ref Blackmore, that isn't quite how it was. Blackmore didn't "join" Elf. When he was still in Deep Purple he had recruited members of Elf to record for his own material. Later, Blackmore formed the band Rainbow and the Elf guys joined him. Blackmore already had the name Rainbow planned after the California Jam concert.
This song was written by Coverdale mainly, he prepared up to three different lyrics versions for the song, he was so nervous to show them to the band, specially to Blackmore. Hughes colaborate in the writing, but this song is really Coverdale's on lyrics.

Hey T, actually Rod Evans was the 1st singer and sang on their 1st 3 albums. Ian Gillan joined on their 4th album along with bassist Roger Glover. That lineup is recognized as the classic Deep Purple lineup. Joe Lynn Turner (Rainbow, Yngwie Malmsteen, HTP aka Hughes Turner Project) sang on the Deep Purple album Slaves And Masters -- some good stuff on their too.

Glen Hughes (the singer Tasha is enjoying most) is a true legend. He was lead vocalist for Trapeze, Phenomena (with numerous members of Whitesnake, Trapeze, Asia etc), Black Sabbath (for the 7th Star album and a duet album with Tony Iommi called 8th Star), Black Country Communion (with Jason Bonham and Joe Bonamassa,) California Breed, a long solo career and currently he's the lead vocalist for Dead Daisies. He's been around since the 60s and hasn't lost a step. He's still among the best in the industry.
The first singer of DP was actually Rod Evans on the first 3 albums. Then Ian Gillan replaced him and Roger Glover replaced original bassist Nic Simper. Rod Evans was later in Captain Beyond. You should check that band out if you aren't familiar with them as well as some early Purple. And this song is a great one.

Love DEEP PURPLE , they have always been one of my favorites , if taking requests , anything from the album MADE IN JAPAN , maybe Highway Star , or Space Truckin !!!!

I would highly recommend from this album the tune Mistreated, the vocals are fantastic and the second guitar solo at the end is a masterpiece and then add Sail Away from this album, you will not be disappointed ...
This was the first single from the Coverdale/Hughes era and is one of Deep Purple's most amazing songs.
Whitesnake go way back to after Purple broke up, it eventually featured Purple members, Jon Lord (organ) and Ian Paice (drums) in the band, and had quite a few hits in Europe before breaking in America years later in the 80's/
I've been a huge Deep Purple fan since 1972,but enough people have commented here with facts and good opinions about the band.I would like to comment that I really enjoyed both of your reactions. It was very entertaining and this is the second video reaction of yours that I have watched. Looking forward to watching some more.

Tasha reacted to Deep Purple's Rat Bat Blue, don't you remember that? Anyway, Dio was NEVER in Deep Purple. This was the first album Purple made after Ian Gillan and Roger Glover left. They were replaced by David Coverdale (lead vocals) and Glenn Hughes (bass & vocals) respectively. Coverdale sings most of the lead on this song, except for the bridges, which are sung by Hughes, who also sings harmony vocals. But my favourite aspect of this song is the drumming, which is beyond belief! Jon Lord's keyboards also knock me out, especially the portion that almost sounds like a Bach harpsicord piece. Amazing!
By the way, Deep Purple is my all time favourite band. You should give a listen to Lazy sometime, or even Speed King or Hard Lovin' Man. They excel in a live setting because they're such great musicians who are not afraid to improvise. Check out their live version of Strange Kind of Woman if you want to hear nasty, bluesy guitar and stunning vocal work when Blackmore and Gillan battle it out on stage. It's staggering! Purple can set your skin on fire anytime they want to, especially live. Lyrically they're not too sophisticated ... it's their musicianship that matters. Which is fine with me since lyrics don't do much for me except on rare occasions.

Speed King is 1 of my faves. When I was 13 or 14 (1988-1989), I found the cassette of In Rock while delivering newspapers on my bicycle. I remember hearing that album for the first time and being blown away. I had only known Smoke On The Water at that time. I have every Deep Purple album, some live too and a compilation. In Rock is still my favorite DP album.
My favorite band also. Ian Paice kills it in the song Mule live 1972 Copenhagen Denmark. Another good jam of theirs is Deep Purple live at the Bilzen Jazz Fest. Wring That Neck and Mandrake Root. Ritchie does some incredible solos in this jam.

Two vocalists in this song. David Coverdale (of Whitesnake fame) sang the baritone parts and bassist Glenn Hughes sang the tenor parts. They made for a good tag team in the MK III version of Deep Purple. Stormbringer, Mistreated and You Keep On Moving would be good songs to check out from the Coverdale/Hughes version of the band.
Regarding Ian Gilllan, he was the second lead vocalist in Deep Purple, and that MK II lineup is considered the "classic" version of the band. Smoke On The Water, Highway Star, Woman From Tokyo, Child In Time and Rat Bat Blue are some of that lineup's more well known tunes. (Tasha has reacted to Rat Bat Blue.)
The original vocalist for Deep Purple was named Rod Evans, and he fronted Deep Purple during their first three albums from the 1960s. They had a hit song called Hush. He and bassist Nick Simper were replaced by Ian GIlllan and bassist Roger Glover in 1969.
I was sweet 16, living in Africa, with a blue Philips portable record player. Miss that darn thing! Anyway… Burn always reminds me of my dorm at Prince Edward boarding school in Salisbury, Rhodesia,(as it was at the time). A beautifully complex piece of underground. That’s what heavy rock or metal was called back in the day. I was so disappointed that Gillan & Glover had left DP. It felt like the end. But then this album “Burn” came out! And all was forgiven We had Purple back again… at least for a while Great review guys. Loved it that you loved it!

FIrst of all: I love you two and your videos! It's great to see how the music I grew up with is still appreciated by younger folks! I have especially two comments to make, maybe someone's already mentioned this, but I can't read 387 comments now, so here I go: One: The first singer with Deep Purple wasn't Ian Gillan, but Rod Evans. Also a great vocalist, as you can hear e.g. in 'Why didn't Rosemary' or 'Mandrake Root'. Two: I agree that this is an epic song that has everything this kind of music needs. So maybe it's interesting indeed to know that the intro was 'stolen' from a song in 'Porgy and Bess'. Talk about black roots .... 🙂

David Coverdale submitted 6 poems to Ritchie. Sci-fi/ fantasy was not David's thing, but Ritchie liked it, so he wrote Burn and Stormbringer for Ritchie. He said, Burn was about "The Death of Atlantis or whatever".
David's lack of commitment to the fantasy genre means that Plato's writings about the fictional island continent which sank into the sea were used by David as a loosely connected theme, not a direct inspiration.
This explains why the city in this song, burns down instead of being sunk into the sea by earthquakes as it it did according to Plato's writings.
Without going into great detail, Atlantis (fictional) was a huge, powerful island kingdom. They conquered many lands in the Mediterranean sea, until they were defeated by the Athenians. Eventually, because of their evil ways and lack of faith, the gods cursed them and Atlantis was destroyed by earthquakes and it sank into the sea.
That said, here's my interpretation of the song, Burn. A powerful woman prophet is sent by the gods to warn a land of their fate, unless they change their evil ways. The great city doesn't not believe her. They call her a liar and the spawn of the devil, except for our story teller, who didn't believe that she was born of the devil.
As it turns out, not only is this woman the messenger from the gods, she is also the one who signals the destruction of the city, should they choose to reject her warnings. With the wave of her hand, she shouts, "Burn!" and the city is destroyed by earthquakes and fire.
I am 68 and m'y favorite hard Rock band were and still are deep purple, led Zeppelin... I am amused by your genuine réactions.. naturel your young and i am an old crazy hard rocker man ! You're great !!!

There were actually two vocalist in this song David Coverdale was the main and the Secondary was Glen Hughes who replaced Roger Glover on Bass
The Burn tour was my first live concert. It was amazing!
My second favourite song based on Ian Paices drumming. Amazing. Fireball is number 1! The semi classical solos on both guitar and organ are so good. The riff is a classic. David Coverdale has a great voice but I believe some parts are sung by Glenn Hughes, the new bass player that replaced Roger Glover who left with Ian Gillan. Coverdale sang on 3 Deep Purple albums. On the first Whitesnake albums Jon Lord played keyboards there too.

You all should check out more of Glenn Hughes (bass players, co lead vocals aka the "voice of rock" aka thw white Stevie Wonder. His solo work, his current band Dead Daises, Big Country Communion, and more including a album as Black Sabbath's singer.

Seventh Star, the Black Sabbath album wasn’t exactly my cup of tea overall but I really liked Glenn Hughes vocals on it. He sounded a little more mature than he did with Deep Purple and I think it fit pretty well.
This is a UA-cam video of Burn live in 1975. Check it out. One of my favorite songs. Also, I highly recommend going through their 1976 album Come Taste the Band. Tommy Bolin replaced Blackmore and soon after died of a drug overdose. Deep Purple hung it up and David Coverdale formed White Snake.

To me, Deep Purple is my favourite band of all time and this is probably my favourite song, right up there with highway star and child in time.
Glenn Hughes' vocals definitely give it a bluesy/black feeling, too! Once I, a white Brit, told a colleague at the English course we worked at in Rio, who is African American, that the individual who sings on his own at the end of "Smoke on the Water", the end bit, on the Live in London album, is a white Brum and not a black american girl. Check it out

David Coverdale joined Deep Purple in 1973 after the departure of Ian Gillan from the band who also made some great music with Purple, including the bands hit song Smoke On The Water which sent the band in to main stream.
Blackmore did it again! As great as Machine Head is, so is Burn. this album shreds. check out Mistreated. then he went and did it again with Dio on Rainbow Rising. 3 different singers, 3 amazing albums! dont even get me started on the live albums....

I was in the Army when this came out. Waited in line at the record store for it to open the buy the new DP album. Put it on the turntable and got just blown away. Couldn't believe my ears. Sold me on DP L3 (the third lineup of Deep Purple). Went back that very afternoon to buy "Come Taste the Band" which was OK, but certainly not up to "Burn" standards. My favorite L3 song, although I prefer to listen to the album "Stormbringer" more.

David Coverdale was a notable unknown nobody, until he became Deep Purple singer in 1974. Then he learned everything, from this experience that lasted until 1976, to dream about living being a rock musician and to have his own band (Whitesnake). Here it's the debut album for David and he was more than ready to this. Deep Purple are the best. You have to react to Deep Purple Mark II (with Ian Gillan on vocals and Roger Glover on bass) I recommend you to listen to Child in Time (Live) also Highway Star and Space Truckin' (live, from Made in Japan doble album).
Hey T, Deep Purple keyboardist Jon Lord played keys on the 1st 6 Whitesnake albums from 1978-1984. Deep Purple drummer Ian Paice played drums on Whitesnake albums 3-5. So there are 3 Whitesnake albums that are 3/5 Deep Purple. Then in 1984, Deep Purple reunited with the classic lineup of Ian Gillan, Ritchie Blackmore, Jon Lord, Ian Paice and Roger Glover. They released one of the greatest comeback albums and one of their best albums -- Perfect Strangers. The title track is an incredible song. I have a Dream Theater album with Bruce Dickinson of Iron Maiden on vocals with Dream Theater.

This whole album was badass and one of only a handful of bands that transitioned well bringing in two new big name members after losing two big name originals.
Actually Rod Evans was the first singer for Deep Purple. Check out Hush in was a cover but a huge hit in America and Purple performed the Song at the Playboy Mansion in 68.
