      @@charliemac64 So your solution is to write a bitchy comment about my bitchy comment? Brilliant! I watched the entire video and saw that she corrected herself. But when she talked about David Coverdale singing, she had just finished reading out the actual lineup. So she shouldn't really be criticizing others about short attention spans. I could have edited my comment but left it there to make a point about maybe trying to be more accurate and doing better prep. Plus I don't think she ever corrected her statement about this being Deep Purple's original lineup. Finally, this is a PUBLIC forum. If you don't want to "hear their shit", maybe you should just log off. Or piss off. That's an option too.

    This is in fact the second lineup of the band, often referred to as Mark II. For me, soon 62, this it the real deal.
    Ian said that he almost regretted writing the vocal line like this, as it was really taxing on his voice doing it night after night on tour. It actually went so far that he persuaded the others to remove it from the set list every once in a while. And the Ritchie the bastard would start playing it anyway :D

    In my humble opinion, Gillan is the consummate rock and roll singer. His range is insane. Can hit those nut squeezing high notes. But can hit those delicate notes as well. There are some live songs when he and Ritchie Blackmore trade notes. It's just amazing to listen to. Gillan also sang as Jesus Christ on the album Jesus Christ Superstar. Please give the song Gethsemane (I Only Want to Say) a listen. If his voice doesn't give you the chills, you are not human!!

    Ian Gillan on vocals - the original "Jesus Christ Super Star" and imo head and shoulders above Glen Hughes as a vocalist, who basically just did back up vocals for David Coverdale from 1974 to 76.
    Jon Lord on Hammond organ - Classical composer and concert pianist in addition to being arguably the greatest rock keyboard player of all time.
    The legendary Ritchie Blackmore on guitar - later with Rainbow and Blackmore's Night and previously with Screamin' Lord Such and the Savages amongst others.
    The massively underrated Roger Glover on bass (also a better bass player than Glen Hughes imo).
    And the fantastic Ian Paice on the drums.
    5 of the world's greatest musicians at the time, who combined to make up imo the greatest rock band of all time, who practically defined Heavy Metal in the 70s along with Black Sabbath and Led Zeppelin (I know, I was there - old codger that I am 🤣🤣🤣).
    P.S. I don't hate Glen Hughes. Think he's great as well, just not as great as the above. 😉
    Love your channel- keep up the great work 😁
    P.P.S - if you want to hear DP playing metal with a capital M -"Hard Lovin' Man" from the "in Rock" album (same album as "Child in Time") is about as heavy as they come.

    Dear Mel,
    I think quite a lot of modern musicians have still heard of Deep Purple early when they are learning an instrument.
    Althouuuuugh ...
    I have heard, that the "May I help you" riff from "Smoke on the Water" in guitar centers is going to be replaced by "Seven Nation Army" almost entirely.
    The idea you had about the importance of band rehearsals is incredibly accurate.
    When I started to play in more serious heavy rock and heavy metal bands end of the 80s, we rehearsed 3x a week for 3-4 hrs plus gigs. I practiced 2hrs of bass daily for years at home (additionally) in the beginning. Today I am happy to find a band that manages to meet 1x a week, preferably with all members. And I have heard that nowadays there are bands that walk into studios that do not even have a rehearsal room. (I sweettalked the caretaker of our school to give us the key to a storage room, so we can use it as a rehearsal room in late afternoons at the soft age of 15, to start my first band...)
    There are for sure things you can only learn if you play together with a band, in one room. I learned nearly everything I know about music this way. We had so much time in the rehearsal room, we covered 35 rock songs from the 60s-80s just for fun, additionally to our original songs. You learn how things work, how good songs are composed, arranged, how the other instrument work in a band context, what is doable and what isn't. All the things you can never learn at home...
    And for sure - you experiment a lot more. In times, where you had to buy records at the record store, when you sat by the radios and tv to hear and watch the rare rock programs, and later shared your VHS copies of music and concert videos ... there were very few occasions to glimpse into how modern music is being made. You sucked all information in like a sponge and learned from one another, we talked for hours about music and how to do things. Nowadays, musicians take out their phones and google it and get 37 tutorial videos on YT of how to sweep-pick shred the shit out of your guitar with preset xx on your Quad Cortex ...
    With the result that you have guitarists, where all their friends say, that they are THE beast on guitar, but when you bring them up on stage they tell you they can not play with a guitar strap, standing ... because they've never done it.
    Not better, not worse, just VERY different ....
    But still - there are lots of very talented guys out there, and the starting equipment for musicians is MUCH easier to get, much cheaper and with incredible price/performance ratio, and you are not forced anymore to believe "experts" with their marketing babble and esoteric snake oil ideas of how a guitar works. You can look up the serious stuff in seconds, thank you google.
    So, every time has its pros and cons.
    Yes, this was an incredible performance. And, easy to notice, it is not really guitar oriented. It's a pretty well-balanced band performance. And Jon Lord is a perfect example of how an organist can be a VERY valuable rock musician with a very small set of possible sounds, compared to a 2020 keyboarder ...
    This was a fun video, Mel! See ya in the evening!
    Best regards and cheers, my dear dudette!

    It's in my head
    I can see what's gonna be
    As I lie in my bed
    Man is not my brotherhood
    I am of the dead
    I died as I lived as I loved and was born
    On some distant hill
    The reasons to hide were the reasons I cried
    Fools pass laughing still
    There can be bad blood in all I can see
    It's in my brain
    You don't know the pain I feel
    As I must live again
    Rocks and stones can't bruise my soul but
    Tears will leave a stain
    They smile to themselves as they lay down my head
    On some distant hill
    The blind and the child sweep a tear from their eye
    Fools smile as they kill
    I got my own way to go and now I want
    To take your minds
    I believe if you could see
    The blood between the lines
    I believe that you could be
    A better kind
    Please lead the way so the unborn can play
    On some greener hill
    Laugh as the flames eat their burning remains
    Fools die laughing still"

    I posted it was Ian during the video but at the end you noticed your mistake. I do agree that sometimes it is hard to keep up with band's changing line up so bloody much😀.
    Just a couple of points, Ian was the original Jesus in Andrew Lloyd Webber's "Jesus Christ Superstar" album! (Oh and Alice Cooper has done a performance in the USA playing King Herod which is superb, he plays him as Alice😁).
    The band had kind of different backgrounds with Lord being originally a classical keyboardist and Paice being inspired by loads of jazz drummers. They kind of merged loads of styles as you can tell from just the one song!
    I recently saw a couple of bands here in Scotland who definitely have some Purple in their sounds (along with The Faces, Humble Pie, Black Crowes and much more) in Silveroller and Dewollf who hail from Holland. They have been together for 16 years and were tight as a very tight thing. The drummer/singer is 28 and the his brother the guitarist/singer is 30 so you can guess their ages from when they formed. They were outrageously good.
    Enjoyed the video as always and hopefully you will remember who is who next time (I mean I have an excuse, I am bloody ancient😂).

    There is no greater insult to Ian Gillan than calling him first Gillian and then David Coverdale 😊. Of course, you can apologize later, but this will not reduce the damage. Coverdale needed Hughes, to come close to matching Gillan's vast range, but they couldn't quite cover him. As for training, Mr. Gillan is not entirely self-taught and he has a technique, although it is very dangerous for the voice, but individuality in this genre implies risk - he is from a musical family, his grandfather was an opera singer, and little Ian sang in the children's choir at church as a child. And deeper training, although it gives good technique, makes singers similar to each other.
    It’s not for nothing that you mentioned Jesus Christ, because Ian Gillan was the original Jesus in the rock opera Jesus Christ Superstar.

As soon as it gets around '77/78 it gets incredible boring to me and it keeps on being boring more or less from then on. Who chooses the videos for you? This version of "Child in time" isn't their best by a long shoot. Do yourself a favour and check out another version or 10! The one from "Made in Japan" is a classic that many consider the best version but isn't on video. There are other versions to check out though for example try it from "Live in Denmark '72". Deep Purple were Heavy Metal and definitely the first band to be called Heavy Metal in Australia about 1971.
    Then came Black Sabbath who were NOT orriginally called Heavy Metal but Led Zepplin were when released here a short time later.
    Just because the new Heavy Metal musicians and fans were not born when Heavy Metal was first established does not mean the original Heavy Metal bands are or were not Heavy Metal.
    The big difference was that the early Metal bands could play Blues and Jazz and mostly played hard or heavy rock and other genres, like skiffle ( English jug band music )......the stuff most of the new commers can not play.

    I'm guilty! Not only did I watch the video to the end, I'm sometimes even reading comments. I'm old!
    Talking "attentions spans": Back in 1981, there was this bunch of guys, baking cake and cookies in what formerly was a kitchen. Some 6 meters away from where I'm sitting right now (as the raven flies). Stephan had chosen to make an apple cake. A pie kinda thing (means: it has a crust on top). The recipe was not written very well. Only in the last sentence it said: "And don't forget to poke some holes, to let some moisture evapourate, while baking."
    Stephan obviously hadn't read that far. We had it with a spoon, in result. It WAS edible, but: well...

    Could you please as a request for a suggestion to react to my favorite symphonic viking metal band wintersun from Finland? They are a sister bands to 2 other symphonic metal bands Epica and Nightwish. I would recommend that you start off with wintersun sons of winter and stars live rehearsal video at Sonic pump studios in Helsinki Finland. Next is wintersun time live rehearsal video. Then follow up with wintersun land of snow and sorrow live rehearsal video. Also listen to wintersun loneliness lyric video too. So come and join the rest of us in the wintersun world wide wintersun symphonic viking metal army ! Thank you much love wintersun Alex ❤️

    I could see some of the mystic about legacy bands being selection bias. There always is a ton of solid bands that will never be well known, even many that developed a following in prime become increasingly niche over time. Bands that are being recommended decades after their prime are probably going to be among the best of their era.

    It's so great to see people getting exposed to older "proto-metal" (totally made that up, I apologize). I also agree that it's not true that older vocalist stylings are superior to modern stuff and vice/versa-it's important to see the big picture and how the musical stew simmers over time. That's one of the best things about the art form, the tributaries that form from the river of musical expression. In the end, if it moves you, it moves you :D

    Deep Purple are one of those legacy bands, like Thin Lizzy, where I always think "I really need to listen to more of them" but never get round to it. Now, I did get round to listening to more TL so I have hope I'll get round to to more DP*. I think the problem with DP* is you get introduced with Smoke on the Water and for some reason I never wanted to listen to more after listening to that. This song definitely piqued my interest WAY more than Smoke on the Water. Great song!

    Ian Gillan sang the role of Jesus on the original 1970 recording of Jesus Christ Superstar. Actually, THE best version on Child In Time is on the 1972 live album Made In Japan. The three most influential heavy rock bands of all-time are Led Zeppelin, Deep Purple and Black Sabbath, having influenced pretty much every rock and metal band becalse they were the pioneers. Purple alone has influenced Iron Maiden, Queen, Van Halen, Judas Priest, Aerosmith, The Sweet, Metallica, to name but a few.

    no shade on Deep Purple but I think it's rock and not metal.... still a great band
    And regarding what is better it's in the browneye of the beholder..... you will like the lineup of a band when you discovered it and fell in love with it but generally as in everything else it evolves and us old farts could not do what is being done nowadays while the current musicians can do what we did without breaking a sweat.

    They just don't make em like Deep Purple anymore (had to get my "get off my lawn" Boomer comment in there first).
    But it's true.
    Although today's Metal bands have the technical prowess to amaze you with their shredding capabilities, they just can't match the pure ferocity of bands like Deep Purple, Led Zeppelin, and Black Sabbath. Those bands just had more heart and soul and brilliantly written SONGS today's bands just do not have.
    It's the songs that are the difference.
    Child In Time is probably overplayed, but it's a song that's so good in quality that I don't mind hearing it for the millionth time.
    Song quality make's a big difference.
    Not slagging today's bands, but there's something missing with today's Metal, and that's song quality.
    Child In Time deserves it's status and an all timer in my book.

    It's hard to keep track of names in any band when you're seeing so many new (to you) bands, so the layer of difficulty with bands like Deep Purple makes it really problematic. It's different if you have grown up following specific bands, so you shouldn't feel to bad about making mistakes. Deep Purple had a large number of line-up changes, including three different vocalists within 4 years. (69-73)

    The singer, Ian Gillan, is the only untrained musician in this version of Deep Purple.
    Coverdale was probably trained in jazz vocals, as he did sing like a big band jazz singer.
    Ian Paice was trained in Jazz drumming.
    Jon Lord was a skilled Pipe Organ ( big church and cathedral organs ) player and probably classically trained.
    Both Jon and guitarist Ritchie Blackmore added a lot of Classical music to the Rock genre.....a hell of a lot of fast Bach.
    When you hear a guitar being shred, that is either Bach or a Bach ripp off being played.

    If you haven’t, you need to hear Miljenko Matijević of SteelHeart. He is the best Rock vocalist, bar none! Their songs, “I’ll Never Let You Go”, “She’s Gone”, and “Can’t Stop Me Lovin’ You”, are unbelievable! There is NO comparison between the singers of the past and today. Musicians and vocalists from the past studied and practiced their art for thousands of hours. Today they have Pitch Correction and Auto Tune and the Music Industry needs to LABEL all music that used these technologies so people know what they are buying just as they do “Explicit Lyrics” today. These are NOT effects. These technologies completely replace the original vocal imperfections and replace them with AI generated vocals. FAKE!!!

But seeing as you have watched a whole 1 video and clearly you know better than I, why dont we make a deal. I will PayPal you $50 (which is more than I have ever been paid for a video because I am by no means a wealthy woman from old men getting shitty at me online) for making a video that out strips my video in; Visual quality/audio quality/editing skill/design/concept and that you are in the video; more engaging/more charismatic/more funny/more well presented. If you can do that I will concede happily that you know best. Oh! What’s that? You dont think making a video better than mine can be made for $50?? You might be right. So why not sit back, stfu, and realise you are consuming for free that which you cannot replicate, you silly, silly sausage 💩
      P.S I also have a BA Hons First Class in Performance and a Masters with Honours in Songwriting from the University of the West of Scotland, so I do expect you to explain your deep academic background in your video also. Don’t have an education that applies here?? Better get reading 💋

    First - There is an old saying:
    “Put brain in gear before putting mouth in motion”, something you failed at, yes? Do research BEFORE reaction, yes?
    Gillan, not Coverdale and Glover not Hughes.
    Second - Deep Purple is NOT a metal band, repeat NOT a metal band, they can do a very wide range of music styles, a better label is a “Hard Rock” band, not metal.
    Anyway.......
    Deep Purple formed in 1968, “Child in Time” was recorded in early 1970 for “In Rock”, and here today, 2024, they are still together and touring.
    Three of the five who played on that 1970 TV studio recording are still there:
    * Ian Gillan - vocals
    * Roger Glover - bass
    * Ian Paice - drums
    * Jon Lord - keyboards - retired 2002, died 2012
    * Ritchie Blackmore - lead guitar - quit 1993
    * Don Airey - keyboards - replaced Jon Lord in 2002
    * After Blackmore quit mid tour in 1993, Joe Satriani stepped in as a ‘touring’ member for about a year.
    * Steve Morse was the full time lead guitar replacement and was in the band from 1994 to 2022 (longer than Blackmore), he retired to look after his wife who has cancer.
    * Simon McBride - lead guitar - replaced Morse in 2022
    It’s now 56 years since Deep Purple was formed, and YES they’re still going strong!
    Cheers,

    • @SoulSingerDiscovers
      @SoulSingerDiscovers  Місяць тому

      I have been in the music industry for over 15 years so yes, I know what it is and I would offer that yes they didn’t have the tech then but it doesn’t mean we don’t have phenomenal vocalists now. In fact Tori Kelly/Layla Hathaway/Jazmine Sullivan would all sing Ian under the table but that’s also not the point. Era does not define superiority. Auto tune is not a replacement for talent.
