This album introduced two new members of Deep Purple - David Coverdale on lead vocals, and Glenn Hughes on bass and co-lead vocals - they're both singing on the song "Burn". Coverdale later went on to form Whitesnake, and Hughes has had a long career which continues to this day. I read something very interesting about "Burn"'s guitar riff. Purple guitarist Ritchie Blackmore mentioned in an interview that he came up with the riff while trying to play a George Gershwin song from the 1920s called "Fascinting Rhythm", and sure enough, that single musical phrase is identical to both songs, but that's definitely all they have in common. You have to give Ritchie credit for being honest.

Agree… Hughes & Coverdale alternating lead singing duties, & harmonies and Blackmores savage guitar…
Blackmore has always been such a polarizing figure in the annals of Rock. His musical genius & guitar playing were groundbreaking . But his fickle behavior and the way he summarily excommunicated band members destroyed what he helped to create. But it also gave him the opportunity to rebuild & rebrand every project he was ever involved with. From Dio to Graham Bonnet to Joe Lynn turner as lead vocalists in Rainbow. And from Ian Gilliam to Coverdale in Deep Purple… and then back to Gilliam (I think). And a seemingly revolving door of drummers & other musicians that he just couldn’t get along with or guys that grew tired of his petulant child act. It was frustrating for us fans… but it was never boring!

Great reaction guys! To cut a long story short, Ian Gillan (Voc) and Roger Glover (Bass) were out and David Coverdale (Voc) and Glenn Hughes (Bass/Voc) were in. 'Burn' was the first album released by the short lived Mark III lineup. The Stormbringer album would follow in 1975 before Ritchie Blackmore left to form Ritchie Blackmore's Rainbow, featuring Ronnie James Dio on vocals. "Mistreated" is a great song that David Coverdale (Whitesnake) and Rainbow performed in their respective sets for years. The title track of the Stormbringer album, 'Stormbringer' is great too.

This album marked the change to the 3rd formation of Deep Purple with the departure of Vocalist Ian Gillan and Bassist Roger Glover and in their respective places David Coverdale and Glenn Hughes entered, who gave a new gas to the band.

    • @Slo-ryde
      @Slo-ryde Рік тому

They did not need new gas….. Blackmore was an unquenchable guy that G and G could work with anymore due to his temper….Lord always brokered between him and other band mates, until he couldn’t anymore because nothing made RB happy.. …Rb finally left in 75 or 76, but enough damage was done.

The title "Burn" refers to what Ritchie Blackmore does to the guitar strings. what John Lord does to the keys on the Hammond B3, What Ian Pace is doing to the drums, what David Coverdale is doing with his vocals, and what this song does to your ears and brain! The studio version is great, but also in my opinion you should watch the live version from 1970. Thank you for doing this reaction to this great classic song. Every time you guys do reactions to favorites of ours, at least speaking for myself, it's like reliving it for the first time through you. It's a great sensation and feeling. Among the other great features of both this song and this band, is John Lord's incredible organ playing. For all intents and purposes he was the leader of the band I don't know if you've ever done any reactions to Deep Purple Mark I. Was a different vocalist, and somewhat of a different style of rock 'n' roll, and not quite as powerful as this lineup.. However, there are a few really great bangers from that first version.: "Hush" (my favorite, and which also features in a great driving scene in the Quentin Tarantino movie from 2019 Once upon a Time in Hollywood), "River Deep Mountain High" (which Ike and Tina Turner did much earlier as the first release of that song, and it's also well worth your checking out), "Kentucky Woman" (which is a Neil Diamond song, and also worth listening to his original), and some others. But those are three great starting points for that earlier Deep Purple.

    Yes, yes, yes, yes, *YESSSSSSS!!*
I've been waiting for this one, you can tell.
You might recall that after their big hit period ("Highway Star" and "Smoke on the Water" and such), guitarist Ritchie Blackmore decided he couldn't deal with singer Ian Gillan and got the band founders (Jon Lord, keyboards and Ian Paice, drums) to fire Gillan and his bassist, Roger Glover. Ritchie wasn't there at the creation, but he was an original part of the group, where Gillan and Glover had been brought in to replace the previous singer and bassist, so he had seniority and Lord and Paice went along with him.
On the one hand, this was unfortunate that the group did not stay together. One the other hand, the new players didn't exactly stink.
That's a very young David Coverdale (yes, the Whitesnake guy) singing lead. And where Gillan didn't have backup vocals (Roger Glover doesn't sing), the new bassist (Glenn Hughes, ex-Trapeze) has a GREAT voice, so he's the one hitting those very high notes in the bridge. Add one of Ritchie's greatest riffs ever, and you get straight FIRE.
Alas, the songwriting wasn't as strong with Gillan gone, but this lineup did also produce"Stormbringer" , another classic banger. Then Ritchie left to form Rainbow, with Ronnie Dio and the guys in Elf.
(Ritchie got to know Dio and the Elves when they did some American dates together. The third band on that triple-bill? Fleetwood Mac. Yeah, not exactly the perfect fusion of styles, I don't think.)
Eventually, Deep Purple got back together, aided by Ritchie having buried the hatchet with Roger Glover, who produced and eventually joined Rainbow. Gillan wouldn't sing this song, because he didn't want to do other singers songs, and besides, Roger Glover still couldnt sing the high notes as Hughes couId.
So Ritchie fired Gillan again, but kept Roger this time. They replaced Gillan with Joe Lynn Turner, who had sung for Ritchie in Rainbow, which also went through a few singers. So Ritchie got to play the song again, because Joe Lynn was willing to sing both parts. (It didn't go so well, but Joe Lynn wanted to keep the gig. He didn't, as Paice and Lord overruled Ritchie and brought Gillan back for a *third* try. That lasted one album, and then RITCHIE quit. Which did appear to solve the issue, and the band has been pretty stable ever since. Still, it‘s a pity the classic line-up couldn't make it work.)
    Deep Purple with Coverdale/Hughes? "Stormbringer"
Deep Purple with Gillan/Glover? "Child in Time". (Longish, but not too long for the channel)
And another song about a lady you really shouldn't mess with? "The Mistress of the Salmon Salt", by Blue Oyster Cult.
    Once again, thanks!
