Of course that's exactly what people always say and said at the time when this was modern music, like: Real music does not need electric instruments, loud amplifiers and manic screaming!
The means used really don't matter, they were just as keen, or pushed by record labels, to produce 'hits'.
Styles and fashion are ever-changing, business not much.
I guess the main difference is that nowadays most artists and producers try to find 'the formula' for success instead of being actually creative and just taking a shot at something great happening.

My uncle was a huge fan of DP and died far too young at 51. One of his requests for his funeral was that this song would be played. What he didn't know was that the church organist also was a fan of DP. He played the best version of this song I've heard on the church pipe organs with the church choir doing the "Oooooh" parts. I've been to a few epic concerts in my life but nothing can ever top that. He even did the guitar solo at the end on those pipes! If you're imaging something epic: Quadruple that. I just wish he was there to hear it!
I already loved the song and the band before this, but that experience just made it one of the most special songs of my life.

So good to see your face relax during the song. I'm one generation ahead of you and I remember the first time I heard Child in Time in the late 1990s when it was remastered and relaunched. And guess what these guys still tour, some are dead, but Gillian is still singing. They don't do Child in Time Anymore cause this is really not for 75 yos to sing. But they're still surprisingly great.

This was 1970 when Deep Purple (w/ new vocalist Ian Gillan and bassist Roger Glover) were re-introducing themselves as a hard rock band... Initially, Deep Purple was founded in 1968 as a pop rock band comprised of studio pro musicians and got some success w/ cover songs like - 'Hush' ... 'Kentucky woman'... But after hearing the music of Jimi Hendrix and Led Zeppelin by 1969, the band wanted a heavier sound.
Ritchie Blackmore (guitar) wanted Deep Purple to record 'heavy' music and enlisted Ian Gillan (vocals) and Roger Glover (bass) to the band w/ founding members Jon Lord (organ/ keys) and Ian Paice (drums) and their 4th studio album 'In rock' in 1970 launched the band as one of the pioneers of the heavy metal/ hard rock genre, alongside Led Zeppelin and Black Sabbath.
This line-up in the 70's delivered the iconic albums - 'Fireball' (1971)... 'Machine head' (1972)... 'Who do we think we are' (1973)... as well as the stellar live album 'Made in Japan' (1972)
Unfortunately, guitarist Ritchie Blackmore's demanding & unpredictable personality led to difficulties and tensions within the band... it created quite a few line-up changes... Ian Gillan and Roger Glover were replaced in 1974 by David Coverdale (vocals) and Glenn Hughes (bass + vocals) and Deep Purple got even bigger w/ the albums 'Burn' and 'Stormbringer' in '74.
However, Ritchie Blackmore ended up leaving Deep Purple in 1975 and formed the band Rainbow w/ singer Ronnie James Dio... Deep Purple hired Tommy Bolin (guitar) for 1 album ('Come taste the band') in '75... but fans were not interested in the band without Blackmore on guitar... Deep Purple split up by 1976 and guitarist Tommy Bolin soon passed away from an OD.
Guitarist Ritchie Blackmore is considered one of the greatest composers and guitar players... but he could also be difficult, uncompromising and unpredictable w/ his moods... When he was good, no one could come close to his brilliance onstage... However, if he wasn't happy, he would be awful and erratic while playing... When he had his band Rainbow between 1975 and 1984, Blackmore went through quite a few members, include 3 vocalists...
One example would be the 1993 live concert video 'Come hell or high water' by Deep Purple, where he was upset w/ a cameraman's position onstage and refused to play half the first song... then, he proceeded to dump water on him while the band played... Keyboardist Jon Lord recalled that he worked hard that night just to get Blackmore to play and engage w/ the band onstage... Blackmore was clearly not happy in Deep Purple and quit soon after... But that 1993 show was in sharp contrast to the brilliance that fans heard on their 1972 album 'Made in Japan.
In 1984, Deep Purple reunited the classic line-up (Blackmore/ Gillan/ Glover/ Lord/ Paice) and released the album 'Perfect strangers' for a successful comeback... But the same tensions between Gillan and Blackmore in the 80's led to guitarist Ritchie Blackmore leaving Deep Purple permanently by 1993 (Blackmore currently records and tours as a semi-acoustic band Blackmore's Night w/ his wife Candace Night on vocals)
Deep Purple recruited Steve Morse (guitar) in 1994 and carried on recording and touring... founding keyboardist Jon Lord amicably left the band in 2002 to work on classical music projects; Jon Lord passed away in 2012 from cancer.
Don Airey (keyboards) joined Deep Purple around 2003... Guitarist Steve Morse recently left the band and was replaced in 2022 by Simon McBride (guitar)... and Deep Purple have a new album out this year titled "= 1"... w/ 2 new singles out now - 'Pictures of you' ... 'Portable door'.
Some of Deep Purple's iconic songs:
'Smoke on the water' ... 'Fireball' ... 'Highway star' ... 'Perfect strangers' ... 'Black night' ... 'Burn' ... 'Soldier of fortune' ... 🔥🔥🤘🤘
