Free Tool: I'm a homeowner and not a painter. The things that you covered about tools and painting was a great help. I went to a big box store to do research on tools and paints. Then went to a local paint store. The difference in quality of products was amazing. I opted to follow your advise and spend a few extra dollars at the local. you get what you pay for. Thank you for the vids.
Just a simple, long-time DIYer here. I do have some good dropcloths, but a simple non-leaking solution I've also used is an old shower curtain (which typically come available when you repaint a bathroom!). Additional tool suggestions: (1) a one foot wood extension - I find I use this much more often than the longer, adjustable poles I have, especially for small jobs. (2) a 1" diameter mini-roller - together with the short extension, this is ideal for painting behind toilets or old radiators where a regular roller is just too wide.
#1 way ive seen painters get fired is by not using a drop cloth or properly prepping there work. there is NO exceptions to being clean and protecting the rest of the job as you paint. it is a habbit you should develop and do without thinking.

Hello from Tampa,FL!!...Thank you for the great advice! After 16 years of having a residential cleaning business I am now starting a house painting business...I have always liked painting and the jobs I did for cleaning clients on the side all said I should be painting for a living...so I'm taking the plunge!! Now I am looking at videos like your's to know what to buy... So far I have done a few interior small jobs and realize I don't have the right tools!!! Now I know what to buy thanks to your videos!
Free tool ! My first job was painting (and other stuff) at an apartment complex. The turnover at month end was a crazy time, getting the vacant apartments cleaned up and freshly painted in as little time as possible so new tenants could move in. I thought I was a fast painter then, but with the tips you have shown me I know I'm a better painter now.
When removing switch plates, never pry them off (unless it's absolutely unavoidable). turn your screw driver around so you can give the switch plate one or more taps with the handle., it'll pop right off. Also, remember to leave the slot of all switch plate screws in a vertical position. it's a small detail that people notice.
Weird, I've literally only ever noticed (or even heard of anyone noticing) the slots pointed the same way one time, in one house. And frankly, the only thing it caused me to "notice" was that it made me suspect someone with OCD had previously lived in it.
@@michaelhendricks9462 I didn't know to point all the screws vertically and got scolded at by the electrician. He was not even my co-worker / . \ So, now I know
Good video! I have all the tools you featured here. here's one of many tips I use all the time. when applying a lot of patch work, sometimes touch-ups are necessary. for second or even third passes to fine tune some mud work, I mix my mud, then add a small amount of chalk-line chalk to the pan. I use blue or yellow (never red!). I keep a bottle of refill that lasts forever! only add enough to change the color sightly. you can plainly see your touch-up patches from across the room! be careful! don't add too much! it makes 45 min mud dry a lot faster, as it changes the chemical make up of the new grayish mud you now have. good luck!

I am not a painter and do have a disability that affects my peripheral vision and depth perception which is a challenge to live with, esp if I’m going to paint! Love your videos man - I’m an industrial painter at the port of portland; I blast and paint ships. As I have desired to learn more about residential, and work towards being effective at painting interior/exterior of houses, I came across you!!! Great material, very clear - it’s apparent that you care about the work you do.
I'm really surprised that a rollers spiner is not one of your tool must haves. Infant that would make a great video clean up and storage of rollers and brushs. Thank Man you always have solid advise that works well.
So I guess you don't use nice, quality rollers (which last quite a long time if taken care of, just like any other tool), and don't know how to clean them quickly. Time is money? So is throwing away money. And takes me a lot less time to clean my tools than it does to replace them. I don't have to drive across town to clean a roller, but I do have to do so to get a new one. Oh, and also... gas is money.
My usual roller cost $10, and I can clean it in less than a minute. If you're getting more than $10 per minute, would you mind telling me where I can send my resume?

Ken Doe Sherlock system is great. Saves alot of time changing to different poles on the job, also you can push harder and not have the roller loosen. I use the short bodied roller (15°) that can be stored in a 5 gal or there roller bucket.

I been referring to you as ,"The Idaho Painter," to the homeowner I am painting her exterior 2 story home(stucco/block), garage, and minor interior(hallway, porch, and radiators). I shared your video on masking paper. She bought a nice $500 airless paintsprayer and lots of supplies for me. Paying me very well. I appreciate your easy to follow advice. I told her that he is a cool dude. Powerwashed house and spent 8 hours scraping wirebrushing and a nice floor scraper with carbide scraper. Damn block cement scraping is hard work.

My wife and I have owned 4 houses over the past 46 years, painting each one inside and out myself. I learned many years ago (tip #1) to keep the paint stirred or else you’ll see shine and / or color differences from one wall to the next. To that end, (tip #2) I use a paint stirrer attachment for my electric drill. Before pouring from bucket or can to smaller container, I make sure the paint will be uniform from start to end of project.

good morning just wanted to thank you folks for your honesty about everything yeah man I make 20000 decisions a day about so many things that nobody else understands you folks get it what do I have to do to go to one of your classes I love my life I love the trade that I do I make so many decisions I can't turn away from it it's just a wonderful way I'd rather deal with paint brushes atmosphere texture substrate than dealing with people
Thanks for sharing and being with us!
If only I could name every tool I keep in my van :)
because time is money and roller covers are disposable.
Free Tool! Always appreciate your videos. As I start my own painting business, your content has been invaluable. Thank you!

Thank you for watching!
Free tool. Love this website. I have learned so much as an amateur do it your self painter. Your tips and tricks have helped so much that I now can paint without using much tape for cutting ceilings or around the baseboards. Thank you so much.
Congrats to Ken Ladosinsky, Deivid Andrade, and Charles Youngblood! They have won either a free tool or shirt! Thank you to all who commented and participated, I am very blessed by all the support I receive from my subscribers :)

Thanks for all these tips. I love your speed, style, and enthusiasm. I start a painters job tomorrow and I think you will help me keep it. All I need is some tools, hopefully, some will be "free tools!" Wish me luck.
Thanks for watching Matt!
you gave me some good tips thanks a lot brother I needed that
Thanks for watching :)
I love the paint roll off buckets. Purdy makes one…so much easier to move around then the trays and less risk of splashing over the edge
Chris, what's your take on the Wooster Sherlock painting accessories [rollers and extension poles]?
We have had good luck with them
Ken Doe Sherlock system is great. Saves alot of time changing to different poles on the job, also you can push harder and not have the roller loosen. I use the short bodied roller (15°) that can be stored in a 5 gal or there roller bucket.
Ken Doe best system out there
love the wooster sherlock, i have been usi g the pro/doo-z rollers, are the purdy White dove similar or the standard to use?
Wooster sherlock stuff is great, i prefer their Silver tip brushes over their rollers and frames tho...
Free tool! Love the videos guys! Been watching y'all forever now! God bless!
Congrats! You've won a free tool or shirt. Email me at chris@idahopainter.com to see what you've won :)
How could you forget RAGS/TOWELS HA!
lol, I don't know, I guess it's just a given :)
I'm sure you have seen those fools that have caulk and paint finger prints running all down the front of their pants. LOL, they can't come on my job looking like that. Paint belongs on the walls not on you. HA. Love the vids, keep um coming.
Thanks

I been referring to you as ,"The Idaho Painter," to the homeowner I am painting her exterior 2 story home(stucco/block), garage, and minor interior(hallway, porch, and radiators). I shared your video on masking paper. She bought a nice $500 airless paintsprayer and lots of supplies for me. Paying me very well. I appreciate your easy to follow advice. I told her that he is a cool dude. Powerwashed house and spent 8 hours scraping wirebrushing and a nice floor scraper with carbide scraper. Damn block cement scraping is hard work.
I lost count on how many times he said "Actually".
Thank you for the helpful video. I’ve seen the hand masker suggested a few times by professionals now, the one thing I don’t have and not common in hardware stores here.
Gotta have it
Hello, I been watching your videos for a long time now, and your the biggest help out of all these videos on UA-cam. So much info and if i didnt already know it, I have tryed out your ideas and most of the time I have actually stuck with it and got my guys to watch your videos as well.
Awesome, I am glad to help! Thanks for watching & supporting!
Free tools. I have nothing to lose!
The "free tool" is the advice you give. Timely and informative, if the employees at The Home Depot and Lowe's learned about the ten tools and what to recommend to customers, they would have many happy people.
Free tool 😄! Starting a painting in NJ and enjoying your videos very much. Thank you!

Very helpful video , i use Purdy roller frame they are lighter weight
Purdy is awesome! Good roller to use, thanks for sharing!
Free tool. Just started working with an airless sprayer. Watched a bunch of your videos before I started spraying. First couple of rooms I had to back roll, I starting to finally get the hang of it.... wish I would have bought it years ago... I do think the backroll makes the wall look better or it is just what I'm used to seeing
Back rolling a wall makes touch ups easier.
Joseph Helminiak we just purchased ours too. My husband and I are having such a hard time. So today I purchased a new tip and guard hoping that would help. Praying we get the hang of it. Just seems so messy. I prepped everything (or so I thought) 🤦🏻♀️ and back spray everywhere 😩. So let’s see if these new items help.
I love your Bible scriptures in your video. So wonderful to see that
Always nice to have a "free tool". Thanks for the vid.
Dust brush and rag! You know that deserves a free tool ;) Three thing that are always in my whites, 5 in 1, dust brush and rag in the hammer loop! Great vid mate!
Awesome, thanks for sharing Brye!
Dang, I forgot an item, half sheet of 120 folded paper...LOL.

Appricate the production and straight forward demo. Including tool description was also very helpful.
