If you're doing production based work like with new houses for a builder/developer, I highly recommend the 18" with that frame because getting so close to the cut in is less important than still getting a good job done as timely as possible while expending as little energy and causing as little fatigue as possible. I was the best wall roller of my crew and I could roll a whole room with one of these and get high quality finish almost as fast as someone could airless spray it. 👍 For anything else though, I don't think it really matters a whole lot and I would probably go for the one sided form myself for those extra close cut ins.
I’m a big fan of the colossus stroller covers from sherwin. Holds a lot of paint, distributes it very well, pretty easy to clean. Wouldn’t use them on like a rough surface exterior or popcorn ceiling but anything else I always use them
I like those too. We don’t wash out / save our covers anymore so we’ve switched to the Wooster Pro-doo FTPs. But the colossus roller are dope if you’re going to re-use them 🤙
Thanks Leroy. We used 3/8 for a long time and over the last few years have moved to 1/2". The 1/2 from Wooster finish like a 3/8 which is why we like them so much. And they hold more paint.
I just bought several of the 3/8" nap 9" Pro Doo-Z FTP rollers. The plan was to paint my garage with them and see how they do. Hopefully I am not conpletely wasting my time by not going with 1/2" :( Ace Hardware here in MN carries the FTP branded rollers... for anyone here in my neck of the woods and maybe stumbling upon this.
You'll be fine with the 3/8"s. It'll give you a good feel for that length of nap. Give the 1/2" a try on the next one and see how they compare for you.
Great video! For our project we have a lot of fresh drywall that is going to get a PVA coat first. Would you still recommend the 3/8" Pro-Doo Z for that as well?
@SuperVassarBrothers I guess they don't shed then. I've also got some older Purdy roller covers, but I feel like the nap is too short. The 3/4" nap leaves fewer holidays in the coats. Kind of a pain to clean, though :)
Hello I Loveeee your channel. This video you recommend a 1/4 nap for doors. A previous video you also recommend 3/8 nap (which I used) but our local hardware store has 1/2 nap for smooth surfaces. Now I'm confused again 😂. Can you explain the difference? One of your video you posted a chart showing 1/4 nap for smooth up to 1/2 nap rough surfaces which is very helpful. Thanks in advance for your response.
You can use 1/4 inch or 3/8s on doors. The shorter the nap the “tighter” the stipple pattern which usually looks better. We use 1/4 inch on most flat panel doors, and 1/2 inch on walls. My preferred roller cover for walls is the Wooster 1/2 inch pro-doo-z FTP
Question: priming flat, smooth walls for lime paint wash... foam roller or one of these for the flattest texture possible? I believe the primer is acrylic based. Thanks!
Hmmmm, I think I know what you’re talking about. You may have to end up experimenting with a few different roller covers. I’d try 1/4 inch nap, then maybe a 3/8s. See what’s closer to what you’re trying to replicate.
It depends on how rough the stucco is. If it’s kinda smooth-ish then the 1/2 inch will work. If you feel like you need more spread then you can jump up to the 3/4.
How do you keep the roll on the handle?!:) When I put it on it does have click, seems it's in place, but after a couple of rolling it falls off. I tried different ones, all falls off. They can't be all a bad brand or broken. What am I doing wrong?
That might be an issue with a bad batch of roller covers or you have not seated the cover completely on the frame. That’s happened to us before. If you continue to have the issue then I’d try out a different roller frame. Wooster makes some decent ones.
I have not, although that might work. I have a feeling it would be difficult to get the proper amount of pressure on the side of the roller cover that's hanging off the cage.
I have zero experience with that product and I’ve also never painted countertops. I’m guessing 1/4 inch Wooster or Sherwin Williams roller would work best to give you a smooth finish.
There are lots of scenarios where spraying is not appropriate. 14s make a huge difference when rolling big walls and ceilings. It’s cost effective for my crew, but if it’s not for you then that’s cool too.
@@SuperVassarBrothers then you switch to a 9 when the 14 is too big.. Becomes inefficient. Two sets of trays and sleeves. Have you timed yourself? Or you just assume you're so much faster? How 'bout you show us on an actual job.
Umm, aren’t they called “whizzers” because the brand Whizz invented them? Either way I like your set up? Have you ever used the purple rollers from Home Depot? Another really nice woven roller and they have matching covers for your 4” small cage.
"whiz" rollers refers to urinating because the little roller can easily get behind the toilets to paint bathroom walls. If this guy had been painting 20 years he would have known that.
the nap is too short, and i think you talking about latex paint ,for acryl paint you need 18mm nap ,and best roller is standard size that fit in too bucket of paint, you paint 23 colors ? and then ?good 1 time use roller is the best.
own purdy brushes didnt like the purdy pole it wobbled and heavy like thge wooster the quick connector roller to pole, and roller by purdy sqeaks wobbles feels low quality wooster better by]uild and tap on one side the nap falls off
@@SuperVassarBrothers me too! I checked out Purdy is fiberglass like wobbles full extension heavier, many complaints on the pole contracts whiteout warning from pros. Wooster one complaint can only to align the holes for a area to paint. I did my homework and glad I did the Wooster is aluminum sturdy yet lightweight, like the roller locks on via a "clip" to say, fast on, fast off, like the Wooster Roller done tap it on one side the nap falls off.
Don't buy this woodster rollers they don't hold enough paint and a lot of little drips use purdy or lamb skin from Sherwin Williams wet them first when out the pacake
That has not been my experience with the wooster Pro-Doo Z FTP line. I ran into a lot of issues with purdy's shedding nap falling apart. That's why we switched over to the FTPs. 8 Minute video talking about roller size & nap, 6 seconds mentioning 'woven' which was the only value for someone looking for material type, 0 time spent describing actual roller material (microfiber/mohair/foam etc etc)

Love you man. GREAT videos. Such a nice alternative to the Idaho painter.
Haha, thank you kind sir 🫡
Best painting videos I’ve seen
Thanks Jerrod! I'm doing my best 😁
Great tips! I've never used a roller cover that didn't shed 😅 definitely going to look out for woven ones on my next project.
We used the Pro Dooz FTP today and no shedding :)
Great video. Will try 1/2” cover (typically I have used 3/8”). Looking fit and trim for summer!

Nice video brother. I like the 14 inch roller better that 18 inch roller. 14 inch rollers are easier to clean the roller spinner cleaner.
Thank you kind sir. I’m a big fan of the 14s too. They’ve become standard for most of our job load outs 🤙
Would you recommend a 9 inch over a 14 inch for a first time painter that's painting his entire house?
14s are pretty sweet if you have a lot of wall to do. You might want to use a 14 for the ceilings and then 9s for walls or smaller areas.
@ ok. Do you think I could buy just one 14 inch tray and then use the 9 inch roller in that 14 inch tray as well?
Great Advice. I'm going to try the 14" roller on my basement remodel.
14's are awesome if you've got a big surface to roll. Good luck with your project!

Great video I really learn a lot from these. Have you tried microfiber? They seem to have less lint than the woven.
Thanks for the feedback. The 4" microfibers are nice. We haven't had much luck with the 9" ones tho.
Great video! For our project we have a lot of fresh drywall that is going to get a PVA coat first. Would you still recommend the 3/8" Pro-Doo Z for that as well?
We’ve been using the 1/2” for pretty much everything now. That would be my recommendation
I've gotten numerous uses out of the home depot "best" purple roller covers with no shedding. When do you start seeing the shedding?
You’d see it immediately

the wooster 18 inch cage actually has a slimmer profile at the ends than the wooster 9 inch and 14 inch frames do.
We haven't had much success with the 18's for residential repaints. 14's are our sweet spot. To each is own tho. Thanks for the comment
Have you ever used an 18” sleeve on a 14” roller cage?
I have not, although that might work. I have a feeling it would be difficult to get the proper amount of pressure on the side of the roller cover that's hanging off the cage.
@@AZDESERT2024 you put the end cap on it ;) but yeah it didn’t work too well, wobbled a bit

If speed is what youre after you would spray. 14 means unnecessary costs in additional trays, cages and sleeves.
