What's good about the Ocean version of this is that you can clearly hear Android 17, a heartless sadistic killer beg for his life and scream because he wanted to live...and it's terrifying!
The main timeline's androids were more tricksters who thought things were fun and games, they never really killed out of pure pleasure, the future timeline androids were the truly sadistic ones that were pure evil and took pleasure in killing anyone and everyone.

I remember this disturbed me as a kid, hearing 17's muffled screams. When I rewatched it years later I thought it wasn't so bad and wondered why it freaked me out. I didn't realise that this was a totally different dub to the more popular and widely available Funimation Dub that I saw when I was older.
I never got to see this dub as a kid. They changed the ocean dub after goku appeared on the scene to fight #Jeice Burter and #racoome. The first time I watched this part of cell and the Androids was on October 20 2000 and it was dubbed in English but not by Ocean. The dubbing was done by funimation. I can't remember how many episodes were dubbed by Ocean in the 90's but there weren't many. Not that many that I could think 🤔 of. When did you watch these episodes featuring Trunks cell and the Androids. The early 90's? Cause I sure as hell don't remember watching any of this in English by Ocean. I can't relate. I started watching this scene when I was in my teens.
If you listen carefully it's one of Ocean Studio previous cartoons, Super Fighting robot Megaman, it's just lazy copy paste music from other shows they did over the years, they were too poor to afford an actual soundtrack.
I definitely preferred the Ron Wasserman score from the Saiyan-Namek saga from the Ocean Dub. Especially with that Mighty Morphin’ Power Rangers guitar. :)
I remember watching this for the first time as a kid, As soon as this episode ended, I had to go into the other room and eat my dinner...I felt sick after watching this scene haha

I just went to the original. You know. The Japanese dub. Turns out there is no growling on the Japanese dub therefore this doesn't make any sense 🙄😒. The funimation English dub makes way more sense than the English ocean dub when it comes to that part.
I always imagined he did due to the way he is frantically looking left and right before Cell makes his move. He's just disorientated, so he can't figure out where Cell's growling is coming from.

I also greatly prefer the Yamcha from Ocean as he's got a great voice and is just generally more fitting (imo). Goku went through several VA switches in Ocean (my favorite being the first) but the last one was good too. Frieza was another one that I think is superior in voice and training, but Funi's Kai version was actually very good. Tien was weird in Ocean, but it was just the style they went with and it worked. I also think the kid Gohan voice was more "kid-like" in ocean, which I like.

Ian James Corlett, Peter Kelamis and Kirby Morrow >.> Peter is my fave, Ian is 2nd and don't care for Kirby's Goku but respected and liked the guy also liked his Miroku from Inuyasha and I give Funimation a tiny bit of props for giving Ian Kirby's spot as Miroku for Yashahime even though I hate that anime.

At the end of the day, it's all a preference thing, but when I weigh it all out, I'm definitely more of an Ocean dub fan. I liked the music from the original 54 episodes way more, but I got used to the new, 80s-ish stuff from the later episodes. I say you should the Ocean version another chance (you can find it on Cartoon-world), if for no other reason than for the Vegeta and Piccolo parts. Maybe it will grow on you. Anyway, just some thorough reasoning as to why some of us prefer Ocean.

While I'll admit ocean had some bad voice actors in the later episodes, it's still eons better than what funimation has regressed to, in my opinion. Brian Drummond IS Vegeta as far as I'm concerned and so is the guy who does Piccolos voice on Ocean. Christ Sabat does both for Funimation, and is just terrible. Originally, he tried to copy Drummond's style but that didn't work out. Then he came up with his own style where he sounds constipated. And his piccolo is nauseating to me. (continued)
Also Peter Kelamis’ goku is amazing I was upset that he was replaced mid set TWICE for no reason. He’s the only goku actor to match the screams of the Japanese goku, captured goofy, and serious side of him. I also like the voice was also deep enough too. Peter is my Goku.

Brian Drummond made evil Vegeta cruel but Christopher Sabat on another hand more ambitious after he was not so "evil". When Ocean began to dub again Vegeta didn't sound like same and it felt like he had smoked cigarettes and tried to sound cool.

The later eps had some bad VAs to be sure (like android 16,18, 19, Trunks wasn't great but you get used to him, Maron was the most ridiculous thing I've ever heard, as well as a few other bit part characters) but really, the other main character VAs make up for it. It's worth watching for Vegeta and Piccolo alone, and Cell's VA is farrrr better than funi imo. It's not even just the VAs - the dialogue seems way more natural for the most part. Anyway, it's just personal preference in the end.

Ocean dub was always stupid and I really always hated the guy voicing Goku! At least this is one of the scenes where he voices Goku doing a good enough job and not over doing it. He still sucks though

I hate ocean dub but this part is better than kai. Kai totally sucked compared to funimation in terms of voice acting. I prefer funimation way more.
