No budget is also the reason why up until the Buu arc, most of the soundtrack was just rehashed Mega Man and Monster Rancher music. It's a slapdash dub that shouldn't be compared to Saiyan/Namek Ocean, which had Saban funding and was only marred by censorship and an overly corny script (partially the result of it being the early days of anime translation; it was treated like a saturday morning cartoon).

And the guy who did Goku in the Worlds Strongest dub, who went on to voice Rolfe in Ed Edd n Eddy, he's my favorite Goku of all time. I love Sean but that guy was so spot on. All the other Ocean voices, the newer ones, I either tolerate or really really dislike.
In Japanese it's called Instantaneous Movement, in Funi Dub it's called Instant Transmission, and in this version it's called Instant Translocation. I don't know why people have a problem with this dub, each dub is different.
They both are about equal in quality to me. Funimation had worse voice acting at first but caught up around the Cell Games, and then Ocean caught up to them again in the Buu Saga with new music and uncut dialogue. That's just my opinion though
Wow, Ocean Dub totally disgraces this scene. Not only are all the voices ridiculously high pitched and unmasculine, but Cell barely utters a moan as he get's melted by coolest Kamehameha wave in the series? Give me a break. We're lucky Funimation came around.
Funimation dubbed it first, this was just an alternative dub aired in the UK and Canada because TV stations there didn't like US produced shows and weren't as likely to air them. Funimation didn't save anybody. This was just an alternative dub produced for a specific purpose.

only because of lower budget and rush jobs compared to the 90s version and it took them years to re-dub from their original dubbing. so you will expect tons of lackluster rust. i think if giving another go at doing it and getting more time to get re-invested in the characters with the old levy/saban score it could work out better the 2nd time around

The Westwood/Ocean dub exists primarily out of Cartoon Network UK being unpleased with the drop in quality from Season 2 to Season 3 as well as YTV wanting a Canadian dub of Dragon Ball Z to comply with broadcasting laws in the region.

The actings pretty bad, I blame the voice director. In terms of the sound of the voice I prefer this piccolo and goku. Vegetas ocean voice is good too but it's not as fitting after he gets so buff.
I put that down to Ocean's work on things like Ranma 1/2 where the japanese attack names had to be matched... so things like the "Hiryū Shōten Ha" or the "Bakusai Tenketsu" from Ranma were as how they were said in the dub as well as the sub... So naturally Ocean getting pronunciation on both Kaioken (World's Strongest) and more importantly Kamehameha (Cell Games) was in hindsight pretty natural to them at that point, I think they were working on Ranma at the same time as the Saiyan-Ginyu arcs of DBZ (Ian Corlett was the original Dr. Tofu in Ranma before Kirby Morrow succeeded him in the role) so they probably had more experience in attack names over Funi who were pretty much novices when they first took on Z. Another good example is the pronunciation of Erasa in the Saiyaman arc, when people watch Funimation's Laura Bailey, she pronounces the name "Eh-ray-sah" like the english pronunciation, compare to Ocean's Kelly Sheridan who pronounces it "Eh-rah-sah" to give it a bit of Japanese flair.
No joke though the some of the music here is recycled for monster rancher the tv series it even has cells death theme in there i thought it was hilarious
Terry Klassen really dropped the ball as Kuririn for these later episodes - Sonny Strait was probably the best actor in Funi's cast at this point - but otherwise I go with Ocean for this scene.

As the years went by, as soon as they began doing re-runs of the series Funi's dub seemed to be what was used repeatedly, and Ocean Dub was basically left for dead... But I gotta admit I love Ocean a bit more... All things considered it felt a little more fitting with certain characters.

that uncut/uncensored funimation dub you speak of was nothing close to the original japanese dialogue, it was actually mostly the same as the ocean dub scripts except with censorship undone. The only DB dub funi did that was accurate was DBKAI (and the new movies ofc)

That's something I've speculated about and the only logical thing i can come up with is that the cells in his nucleus survived and went back inside his body to regenerate, other than that i guess you could say it's a plot hole.
I always wondered.... how did cell regenerate after that? Because he says later on his nucleus in his head has to remain intact to regenerate but here his head is blown away completely.
I've actually got the ocean dub boxset that works on region 2... I've actually pinpointed when it changes from Ian Corlett to Peter Kelamis, it was I believe when Goku was on his way to Namek and he's training to become stronger in 100x gravity in his space capsule, halfway through an episode too might I add, so the first minute is Ian then suddenly we hear Kelamis.

I think Instant Translocation is a more accurate name than Instant Transmission.
For example, Cell's laugh sounds nothing like a real laugh, and his "noooooo" keeps going after he gets blasted, up until his top half blows off.

I always preferred Piccolo's voice in the Ocean version over the Funimation version.

I've actually got the ocean dub boxset that works on region 2... I've actually pinpointed when it changes from Ian Corlett to Peter Kelamis, it was I believe when Goku was on his way to Namek and he's training to become stronger in 100x gravity in his space capsule, halfway through an episode too might I add, so the first minute is Ian then suddenly we hear Kelamis.

I swear to God, it seems like the ocean dub got worse pasted the frieza saga. Well....up until when Goku beat the Ginyu force. After that it went Funimation. I always told everyone I preferred ocean than funi......but hearing ocean post frieza saga. I don't think I'll ever say that again. I'll just stick to subs with DBZ.
