thanks for sharing your video on UA-cam. It helped me a lot in figuring out the cine rig configuration for Canon R5C. I recently ordered R5c for my studio and I'm still trying to find the best setup for in-studio video setup. What I'm trying to do is set up the R5C with a gimbal and wireless video transmitter(not sure which one yet but thinking about getting a Teradek). I don't need sound equipment on this setup since I won't use any sound for this shoot. If you don't mind sharing your opinion on this, what would be the best way to configure this setup? My budget is pretty flexible and I would like to find the best setup for this type of shoot. Thank you so much for sharing your knowledge!
Good stuff! Just to confirm, the Small Rig Black Mamba cage for the R5 DOES wiggle/move especially the more you mount stuff on top. This could be a huge problem because when I have the HDMI and USB C clamps in it will also move those two potentially damaging the ports over time. As Cam shoes the updated R5C version of the cage locks in at the top too where the camera strap is. I literally just ordered this new cage so THANKS Cam!
Update: I got the Black Mamba full cage for the R5C and works the same as Cam’s half cage. The wiggle is (mostly) eliminates by the pin that secures on the top left camera strap. This gives ZERO wiggle to the clamp/ports but still makes the right side of the cage still a tad flexible, which is fine for me cause I don’t use that side to mount anything. Hope that helps others.
@@Malick333 I see that a lot of people tend to forget the included port protector that comes with the R5C. It screws in to the port and is very sturdy.
Have you noticed that the r5c once rigged out with the Nano One wont turn back on once if you power off the camera from video mode? I have to unplug the Nano One, eject the internal lp-e6 (wont turn on with nano one unless theres an lp-e6) and then boot everything back up again.
I have a cleaner solution. Shoot with EF glass - 8K 60 works flawlessly. Use the standard R5 battery grip with 2 batteries, you get 90+ mins of 8K 60. Condor blue cage for canon r5 + battery grip. Absolutely no cables needed, and you get to use the variable ND filter adapter. Canon EF 35mm 1.4 II is probably Canons best prime.
Incredible setup, brother! You've truly inspired me to create the same setup. I do have a question, though. I couldn't find the link for your top handle. I've searched online, but the ones I found seem a bit different. They lack the twist knob on the front of the handle that you have in your video. Could you please share the link? I do run-and-gun shooting and just purchased the R5C, but I'm still waiting for it to arrive. Previously, I've been using the Canon 1DX Mark III for all my work. Im hoping that it will perform much better with better quality. Again, amazing setup and thank you for sharing this video. It's going to significantly impact the way I shoot and what I'm able to achieve. Thank you, thank you, thank you, for all the hard work putting together this video....
Cam, I am getting a normal R5 soon for hybrid shooting and was wondering if you had thoughts on a smallrig cage that fits the camera with battery grip vs without. Would the weight of with the grip be better to add some weight to the setup for stabilizing? Or for run and gun would it be better to have the smaller cage without the grip?
Very helpful Cam! Nice tight build. Curious, do you have the baseplate attached to the Arca Swiss mount with a single screw or did you find a way to double fasten it? I just ordered the parts and noticed I can only line up one hole for attaching them. I’m worried about the quick release getting loose and twisting. Do you have to tighten it often?
I have the same concern, found this video while trying to figure out how to get a second screw in with those exact base and quick release. I'm kinda thinking if he's fine with it I should be too. Did you ever figure something out?
What kind of battery life are you getting with the v mounts? Want to do this to fix the obvious problem with the R5c which is battery life. I'm getting like 40 minutes max on the lp-e6nh batteries so I'm curious what life span to expect on the v mounts
For the R5C external power is a MUST. This is without a doubt the best rig I have seen for the R5C. I got mine and returned it because the battery is so bad. It might not overheat but it’s constantly draining that battery when the camera is on. i only got about 12 mins of footage of my first fully charged battery. This setup is sweet for situations that you don’t need weather sealing!
@@cammackey honestly I think that’s wise. The image is stunning but it needs that power for sure. It’s money well spent here and super useful to have someone tell you what parts fit!

It also will only show 25-30 min battery life, but at least the battery doesn't drain since its a 65wh battery.
I think there’s a workaround but requires a lot of long cables through canons accessory. I’m sure someone will make a smart dummy battery tho so it’ll work
I'm building a rig where the goal is to have the R5C detach from everything with the SmallRig quick release plate. V mount and battery like yours, rails to the front for a matte box mount and all focus/zoom motors attached. That way you simply disconnect all the cables and release the R5C and voila, ready for photo mode! And having a handle on the cage is amazing for photo mode when having to move around a lot.
