Very experienced R5C user ... the common hangups (besides no Clog2) are non-issues for me after a LOT of shooting. 1) Use a low profile cage (small rig black mamba) with a micro-hdmi clamp ... problem solved. 2) Battery ... use a small 11500mah PD bank with a long usb-c cable to your pocket or attach to your belt clip IF YOU WANT to keep the actual rig small, again use the rig's cable clamp for the usb-c and it won't move. Attach it to your rig if you want the extra weight ... and weight is good for handheld. I love the R5C because I can keep it scaled down when I want ... and scale it up (rigging) when I need. You can't make the C70 smaller than it is, or any other Canon cinema camera for that matter. Sony's FX3/30 has this advantage too.
I agree with almost everything you said. I love mine and I'll continue to use with no deadline now. And that's my poing: you mentioned that it's "old", based on a R5. But, youtuber aside, normal people don't have to change cameras every year. Once I have a camera that can do all I need, I'll keep it and use it. I used my 5Dmk3 for 11 years. Did I need 4k then? no, just good lenses and know how to use it. My point is, seems that two years equipment is old nowadays, but it's far from true! Have a nice day!
Couldn't agree more. When I started I got what I could afford and learned how to use it to its fullest potential, and I learned to get great video/photos. Then after some "success" I fell pray to the "newest" addiction. But then I stopped really knowing my gear like the back of my hand because I kept changing it so often. Now even though I am still successful and can afford to buy the latest and the greatest I am sticking with the R5 C because I want to know it forwards and backwards and it will last for many years. Plenty to still learn about, lighting, composition, and quality audio.
Motorsport Camera Operator here, I've got an R5C, after almost a year of owning one, I'm at the point where I reckon I'll pick up a second one as a B camera. I've grown to absolutely love almost everything about this camera minus the battery life and micro HDMI. after many shoots with it, I have purchased multiple V mount batteries which have made the battery issues no longer a problem. One Smallrig 100wh will last up to almost two full days if you're shooting 4k slow motion. Being a photographer previously, having both options makes it an absolute no-brainer to pick one of these up. just having both options within the one package makes life so much easier than buying a device dedicated to one or the other! I purchased a RF-EF lens adapter and have been using that and so far its worked really well with this camera!
for anyone wondering, the option "slow/fast motion (WAV)" will record audio into a separate folder from each shot (default location may send it to the SD card) with the filename for the video referenced in the name for the audio.
Wow the smallrig 100wH last that long? I plan on only doing 4k up to 60fps here and there. Was wondering how long it would last if I decided to dabble in 4k 120 or 4k Raw
I've got an R5c and being mainly a video shooter I'm contemplating moving to c70. The form factor of the r5c and full frame definitely helps. A repest comparison of r5c with new firmware update vs c70 vs maybe a Komodo + fx3 will be 🔥
Hey Josh. I have two R5c cameras and they are fully rigged out. I have used them extensively for TV productions and they are outstanding. My clients have many times said how excellent the image is. I rigged them out, in part, to have my high end clients feel good...but I do love the matt box, monitors, cage, follow focus....etc...part of my R5c system when needed. And when I don't need all of those attachments, I still have a small portable camera that is excellent for video and stills. But truth is, so many great cameras out there that I know if had any of the major manufacturers, they would all perform beautifully. Just so invested in EF and RF and knowing the color and cinema menu inside and out. Thanks for the video(s).
@@eriksopracasa3449 my answer is biased but Canon. Like I said, I have so much glass and I know the system. No doubt the fx6 is excellent for many reasons. I think it comes down to the type of productions you do. Many of mine benefit from a small camera mounted to a gimbal for filming people or mounting system for filming cars etc. Plus I often do high end interviews that will air on tv…which both the Sony or the R5c can do very well. Sony would have the advantage for talking heads because of ND, XLR etc. But I have no problems with the Canon and personally prefer the colors straight out of camera. Plus I often have a camera on a mechanical slider. Smaller for that is easier. But on the flip side, my son is about to pull the trigger on either two fx6 or one fx6 and one fx3 cameras. And for me, I like the 8k option and great stills camera of the R5c over the Sony…and built in viewfinder.

I have a Sony A7IV which is great, but this would be for a really professional shoot for TV and I do love the Canon colors so I'm torn between getting the Canon and give it a try :-). Do you think it would be relatively easy to have b-roll footage coming from the A7IV and use the R5C as the main camera?
Great title for the vid Josh and I really enjoyed your chat about the R5C. In regards to that battery bracket from SmallRig, I personally would much prefer if it side mounted the battery on the left of the camera and not the screen. The viewfinder on the R5C is great, as is the screen and when doing lots of stuff, you don't really need a second monitor so a bracket that would mount just a battery like this on the side would be cool for me.
Actual hybrid shooter especially for aviation which is my main gig. This is my dream camera and for me far better than the R5. Though I know the R5 overheating issues have been “fixed” but when most of my shoots are in the summer on hot days no shade it’s nice knowing I don’t need to worry about it. I use the battery grip and just take a few LPE6 batteries because there is time between performers to change out when needed and sometimes I run a battery bank if I’m doing something on sticks. I also shoot equal parts photos so I need the resolution for cropping which we do a lot. Overall I’m probably some of the lucky few where this camera fits perfectly for what I do
I just bought one a few weeks ago. I used it with a Sigma Art 40mm. It is great for what it can do. I bought it for quick gigs. I have two C70s fully rigged for bigger jobs and films (also two XF605s). I see this camera as a mini C70 outside serving as a photo camera. I bought an anton bauer battery the camera can sit on with a dummy battery connection. Once someone rigs this on for video, I cannot see anyone using it as a photo camera. Imagery is unbelievable. Clog2 is not a buzzer killer for me because I use Clog 3.
I got it since it came out... seen your videos on it... Own the C70, R5C and the R3 from canon... Get the R5C + The battery grib and get in total 4 original batteries (2 sets) Then you get the 1 tb angelbird cfexpress tybe b card and a 128 Gb angelbird V90 card... Get the Fx lion v mount battery for backup and lon interview situations.. no rigging needed if you have the batterygrib but its good to have for backup on a tripod. Its ment for shooting without a lot of rigging up.. the same with the C70 and the R3. Zcam, komodo, bs1h cameras are ment for rigging up. :) Every body.. just get the batterygrib already And the part with the no c-log 2 and all that is because they want to reuse the sensor for the new C500 mark 3 probably Thanks for your nice videoes.

The grib is amazing the camera is not ment for using without it... they should have included it in the price when you buy a R5C... the small batteries are not ment for Cinema cameras. @@unknownKnownunknowns I have the FX lion v mount battery mounted to my tripod to connect the camera to if needed by usb PD. but rarely use it.. and havent needed the 8K really.
I had the R5C, but ended up selling it and getting the c70 which is wayyy better for video. Sure it’s not full frame but paired with the canon speed booster it’s solid 🙌👌
Just bought the R5C and man it's incredible! I'm a gimbal user primarily and I can connect it straight to my RS3 Pro and the gimbal provides power to the camera for nearly 2 hours straight!!! Also, having just lens stabalization is huge on a gimbal because IBIS makes gimbal shots look worse.
I would definitely like to see a R5 vs R5 C comparison like you mentioned at 3:30. I've been going back and forth between those two because I can only afford to own one or the other. It would have been cool if they had kept the IBIS in the R5 C. The choice would be a no-brainer at that point. I mean I get why they didn't. But still, would have been cool because it would have made the R5 C the ultimate do-everything camera.
@@rwdrummer the ibis is great for trying to imitate a locked off tripod style shot without one… but any time you’re doing gentle handheld movements it tries too hard to eliminate the intentional movement and makes the shots jump. It has a weird wobble with wide angle lenses as well. Unfortunately turning it off also turns off the lens stabilization so it’s either too much or nothing at all.
For most of the video I thought you had bought a third R5C to go with your other two and I thought that was kind of crazy. Video made a lot more sense when I realized what you had actually done :) I love the R5C and use it in multi cam set ups, and will most likely be getting next generation in this price range whatever and whenever that comes out, but would need to have the issues you mentioned addressed before getting another one. I got this camera used but with under 100 shutter clicks, new box packaging and everything for 3800$. I was considering the R5 coming from an XT3 and I knew I wanted either camera. What sold me is the XFAVC, works wonders on my computer and super easy to grad in CLOG3 and export FAST!! Also the cinema features ie. Wave forms, vector scopes helps me nail exposure every time. I shoot hybrid so this is the perfect camera for me. I don’t do any major pro work, mainly document my travels and my 1 year old though her adventures but I can 100% see this camera as something I have for a LONG time with no need to upgrade. I recently watched a small short I did from UTAH in 4k and on my 82” 4k tv and it just looked phenomenal. What I wish though it was from the start or canon could have made it it’s own thing. - I think it should have been more of a mix between R5/3 what I mean by that is keep the R5 body but the battery grip should have accepted a larger maybe 1DXiii style battery to enable 8k60 raw. - CLOG2 would have been money… esp for flying it on FPV or other shots a C70 is too big for. - internal ND on the sensor - FACE TRACKING 120p 4k please! NOTE: Josh I recently got the small rig V mount L rig as you have here and it’s paired with the FXLION NANO ONE battery from one of your other videos and the USBC cable. it works fantastic for video ans I feel I can go ALL day for video. However when plugged into the camera for video is it supposed to charge the camera? Or will it only charge when camera is turned off?
So yes it DOES charge the camera when the power is turned off... But I don't think it charges when the camera is ON and in photo mode unless it is but just not giving me the charging indicator because the screen is used by the photo information...
I'm working with a couple Sony shooters and they're quite impressed with the R5C. Being able to use Super35 cine lenses is a very underrated feature and something the FX3 and FX6 can't do.
Hello! Thank you for your work, it has helped me a lot in understanding the equipment I have and the equipment I want to buy. A crucial question that I have regarding the R5C and that I have a lot of difficulty finding is about the list of lenses compatible with the Electronic full-time MF option with the R5C. I have the EOS R6 and all my RF lenses support this mode. However, the latest cameras, such as the EOS R6 Mll and R8 do not have the same compatibility as the R6. When I discovered this, it was a huge blow to me, that newer cameras have less compatibility than an older model with the R6. I follow the latest firmware updates and incredibly, none of them have increased the compatibility list with this mode. I particularly use this mode a lot, as it gives me the option to focus manually without having to touch the AF/MF button on the lens, which is a slow process and cannot be done without shaking the camera. So the Electronic full-time MF option is extremely useful for me, as I can change Focus modes while recording a take without any problems. Could you help me figure out the R5C's lens compatibility with Electronic full-time MF mode? Do you use this mode? Thanks!
Just one thing: they did not improve the DR on the R5C in general. The issue with Netflix was the noise floor level, which made the camera not suitable for Netflix Originals production. What they did with the firmware was to have a slightly better signal on the noise floor in XF-AVC - which is the only accepted CODEC for this camera, that also benefits from having the 8K oversampling from the sensor with a derivable in 4K. You can't shoot RAW or MP4 for Netflix Originals, as these CODEC options still maintain the original noise floor level and haven't been worked out. So... It has been pretty much an update in order to appeal to the crowd that use Cinema EOS cameras for Netflix Originals and drive sales/stop production from migrating to other systems. Sony did the same kind of thing to the FX3 and made it Netflix Approved after the initial launch of the camera, although their issues were altogether different.
I had heard it had to do with the highlight information. But if the update had to do with the noise in the shadows, either way that helps with dynamic range.
@@Josh_Sattin It does help with dynamic range, but it doesn't create DR out of nowhere. If you watch some technical tests from its sensor, you'll see that the DR was always there, even with CLog3, but the ground floor noise was too much that made it unacceptable by Netflix standards. What the firmware did was clean up this noise floor by using the XF-AVC oversampling of the image and having it really, really separate the ground floor stops of DR - which were a mess and had to be utterly altered in order to have a full separation. The sad part of it is that this is more of a "CODEC-centric" update, with the RAW and MP4 formats not benefitting from this update. Funny thing is they probably could've add CLog2 to the camera, have a better separation of the DR stops at both ground level and highlights and become Netflix Approved without going through with the backlash they've received from the Netflix rejection becoming known to the public.
+1 on a R5 vs R5C video. I’m also having a tough time deciding on which one to get. Love the cinema features of the R5C but battery life and no IBIS got me worried. I don’t really mind adding a power bank solution but I don’t wanna be tethered to a gimbal for handheld use which is how I like to shoot on mirrorless cams. Would be sweet if you could compare static handheld shots with the RF 24-70mm with OIS turned on. If the R5C is stable enough I’d likely go that route!

Heard that the Canon R5c doesn't do CLOG 2 because it doesn't have the sensor for it. You can shoot in RAW and convert to CLOG 2 but it's apparently faking it? Something like that. The dynamic range is simply not available. After experimenting with the Sirui anamorphic lenses, I wish they would update more options for the desqueeze to accommodate different kinds of anamorphic lenses.
I just bought the Canon R6 II 2 hours ago after testing it in rental. One point in favour was the clever AF for video. Agile handheld usage with an interesting IS IBIS for video. Also a beautiful and flowing image ... and I don't know if the R5C is better for the image .... and right now I prefer not to know :-)
@@debroy379 I think you have made the right choice unless you do photography and require large prints. The R6II is reliable, does not overheat too much, and has a nice autofocus for video. For video the R5C has more options, but I don't know about AF. on the R6II the combination of OIS and IBIS is truly smooth and intelligent for hand held content.
Hi Josh. This is Josh 😂. Thanks for that. I’ve been looking at getting one to use as an A cam to my current EOS R which will then become a B cam. I shoot canon for their glass. But man they make it hard to stay. They aren’t bringing out the glass I want quick enough like an L series 24 f1.4. And the nifty 16mm really should have been f1.8. And I’d love to see them bring out a cinema line camera that’s full frame 10 megapixels and c log 2. That’s competitive to the fx3. But I think I’m dreaming on that one. But I’ll stick to it. They are great cameras end of the day.
I have an R and bought the R5 C for the same reason. I absolutely love it. It makes the R look like a toy and I was always very much impressed by it already. I use the R5 C even more than my C70, which I also am deeply in love with.
Professional real estate videographer here! I've always been interested in this camera but I held off for the same reasons you mentioned. But now adding a little more DR, a little better battery, I'm totally interested. I'm currently on the R6 Mark II which is pretty good for the RE photo/video, just wish it had more DR and not the best A Cam for higher end video gigs. Think there would be a significant difference? And also pair well with the R6 ii? Not in the 8K modes, just 4K CLOG3. Awesome breakdown Josh!
I'd say go for it if the limitations on battery life don't get in your way too much. For higher end video gigs I would recommend it because of the image quality from the 8k sensor. I have mine rigged for handheld and tripod work paired with the R6 as a B cam but I've really been eyeing the r6 mark ii as my gimbal/B cam due to the improved features.
it triggers me to no end that the screen doesnt flip out on these the full 180 degrees. Dumb thing to think about, I know but it triggers the heck out of me.
10:03 there's even a kind of better battery from SmallRig 4323 that's Manfrotto 501 compatible. The only thing that it lacks it's just poor design and it doesn't clamp down very well on the fluid head Manfrotto, and also doesn't clamp down on the Crane 4 Gimbal

I've been experimenting with the 8K raw and yeah you can't edit it too efficiently. Although the ability to record proxies in camera is pretty awesome. Proxy workflows are something I'm getting used to with my new R5C. I have a threadripper workstation CPU and it's still chugs on most codecs.
I use 2k XF-AVC proxies when shooting raw with the R5c. Using Resolve on a 2017 iMac. The proxy workflow seems fairly simple and takes the headache out of working with raw.
@@TheMindfulRonin you'd be very surprised to hear that I upgraded to an i9 and 4090... Premiere Pro is still having issues with MXF files from the Canon R5C. My fix for it is temporarily shooting all intra MXF. It plays back in full quality 4K no problem. Unfortunately I literally built a new computer to try to fix this issue. Adobe is on my short list for products I will replace when I can.
Hi Josh, and thanks for the perspective. When it comes to the newly added Canon 709 picture profile, are the parameters on this or any of the other custom picture settings adjustable in camera? By adjustable I am referring to sharpness, contrast, and saturation, or can this only be done in post? Many thanks for your help on this.
would love to know your thoughts on SF Mode autofocus. I shoot sports mainly and I struggle to understand why when I shoot 4K120 the autofocus is much worse than when I shoot 4K60. Perhaps its the oversampling in 4k60 that makes things look better(minus the fast moving balls); that said; I did find it interesting that with the addition of the Digital Zoom in later FW; when I do zoom in digitally, the focus is better in 4k120 than when I would use a normal zoom (eg rf2.8 70-200). (The focus box even gets larger); would love to know why. If you have any tips/tricks you may have for fast action 4K120 shooting (With multiple subjects like football or lacrosse eg not dirt bikes or skateboarders that canon has highlighted).

Hi Josh, you seem to know everything about the R5c. I’m thinking of buying one but have one requirement that no one can help me with. Basically I would like to use a remote shutter cord to set focus on myself in the video mode, with the assistance of Canon Camera app on my iPad. This function works well in the video mode on the R6 and the R5 but I know that R5c has a different setup for cinema. So: I plug in the remote shutter cord in the appropriate slot, set the focus area on the Cannon Camera app, then press the remote control button. Will this set the focus in the selected focus area? I don’t want to use AF because it can be a bit jumpy. Thank you for your time, Alan
Josh. Love your channel. R5C apparently records in lower bit rates than the R5 . This should help with quicker processing and/or lower computing power requirements, right?
Thank you. I don't think the bitrate will matter that much. I believe they are mostly H.265 codecs which are tough on older computers. I have a M1 Mac Studio and don't have issues with any of the footage on either camera other than the raw.
Hey Josh, following up.. I run an older version of Premier 2021... and I'm trying to find the BEST solution to export the 8k Raw footage to a playable media file. I don't shoot 8k much but I would like to experiment with it just on random shoots and footage ect. I've tried a few settings and just of course takes years to export with my current machine but I just want something reliable that I can play back on my PC or transfer to my ipad to play. I thought I found a solution however it wont play in VLC, or windows media player. It's kind of pointless I think to shoot in 8k and then put into a 4k sequence but maybe it just has something to do with my only having a 1080 monitor and just don't have the CPU to play it. I tried it on my 4k TV and same thing, unplayable. It's an Mp4 file too.
Josh could you please advise me on the best video settings ? There are lots of different custom picture profiles. I’m a newbie’s and I don’t know which one to choose. I want to get best picture quality from this camera and beautiful colours. My preference is to film in 8K 60fps

Josh, we are thinking on the same wavelength. I currently own an R5C and a C70 that I use with cinema glass and autofocus using lidar WITHOUT the gimbal 🙂Will be making a video about this coming up. My question for you is do you think it is possible for Canon to disable the setting in their cameras that forces crop mode when a super35 lens is attached? I think it is ridiculous that you cannot change it either. There is a lot of glass out there that is rated at super35 but actually has an image circle that can cover full frame. I currently have a Sigma 30mm F1.4 Art EF Super35 lens that covers full frame and is sharper then most of my canon glass except my 100-500 L lens. I use the Sigma on the R5C but I have to untwist the lens a few millimeters to sever the connection and then it is a manual lens at that point and I do not get the crop. As soon as I lock it, it jumps to crop mode. Now in video it does not do this and everything works. Only on the photo side does this setting enable and lock. Curious on your thoughts. Keep up the good work.
Thanks! The R5C doesn't force you into S35 when using a S35 lens. I just tried the Sigma 18-35 on the R5C. The mirrorless cameras do that and it is really annoying. Do I think Canon will change this? Probably not.
@@JapaneseMonster You can send a DM on Instagram if you want. I am using the basic Canon EF-RF passthrough adapter. Yes this makes sense that it automatically changes in photo and not video. That's the mirrorless operating system in photo and the cinema operating system in video. Quirks of the Canon systems.
R5 and R5C have identical performance in photos other than the R5C does not have IBIS and the R5 does. R5C is a way more capable video camera than the R5.
Any tips on how to get my R5 & R5C looking best when colour matching? I’m both shooting in CLog 3 and try to expose the same with the same white Allende preset.

I bought it recently and sent It back recently. The dynamic range is still not up to par imo and the battery is nuts… It’s a beautiful camera but there are better cameras out there…
.. Do you mind if you could test a Feiyutech Scorp Pro on the lastest R5c firmware to check that it dosen't lock up the camers when you push record mode.. Feiytech say they tested it and never had an issue ...but mine locks up. I presume it is extremely hard to damage the usb port on thr camera so I expect a firmware issue.
I’m pretty new to filmmaking, what’s the issue with micro HDMI and full size HDMI? I don’t know there to need a quality difference btwn to 2 types of cables
Micro HDMI is way smaller and thus can easily break or not work correctly. It is very easy to bump the cable and damage the plug and/or the port on the camera. Full size is more reliable.
I'm getting super confused because when I record on the Ninja V+ it has an option for C log 2. I noticed no matter what log profile I pick on the Ninja the videos do not match the quality in the camera. Driving me a little bit insane. Now I am recording on the camera and the Ninja until I figure out the best settings on the Ninja. The audio quality is so much better from the Ninja. That's the reason I wanted to record with it and increased storage with the SSDs.
I believe the option you are seeing has to do with the display LUTs on the Ninja. If you are using the R5C, there is no reason to record in the Ninja. It's an extra point of failure and the CFExpress B cards are cheap nowadays.
@@Josh_Sattin I wouldn't say they are cheap lol. A 1 TB SSD is sitting on my office desk not being used. A CF Express type B card cost 200 for 128 GB. That is 3 minutes in 8K 60. Lol they are going on sale more. You are right about that. I was looking for it to simplify the workflow but made it more difficult. I'm thinking about getting an external recorder for audio at events in the future.
If you are using cinema gamut, the video from the Atomos may not match correctly. My when I use a Ninja V with the R5, I need to use 709 or 2020 for the color to match the internal card. I haven’t tried it with my R5 C but I assume it’s the same.
Josh, those projects of yours that you keep mentioning, and to which you associate experience with certain cameras, why don't you show us some examples for us to see? I assume that your projects are not a walk in the forest where you film yourself.

R5 C clog 3 and cinema gamut has been a huge disappointment for me in Resolve. If I shoot Canon Raw light or Canon´s own codec and have Resolves color management on, the resulting image is very washed out. On Sony FX6 and RED the image is way better with just gamut and gamma applied. For example slog3 3 and sgamut3.cine in Sony´s case. Has anyone else run into this problem and how have you solved it? I know I can futher grade the image and off course I do it, but seems strage that Canon´s engineers have left the image so terribly washed out after applying gamut and gamma.
Run and gun guerrilla type / doc footage indoor in light changing environments to outdoor changing environments as well. All natural or environmental lighting
Is anyone using the R5C for hybrid sports/ action shooting? Would love to know your thoughts. My R5 overheated several times this summer during critical outdoor games in 4k 60p crop mode - couldn't have been worse timing.
I’ve shot 3-4 games a day with about , 45 min games outside this summer in 95+degrees full sun. Had anywhere between 45-90 between games. Never over heated like my old r5. I mainly shoot 4k120 but one of them was 4k60 as I am still trying to understand why that’s more sharp .

I bought it twice, Im still disappointed. The camera has great features but the battery and AF still lacks for me. Im not a fan of rigs and making my camera bigger.

I mean this is very clear that you release such videos when Canon needs it. Now they've released a new firmware update and want to sold more R5Cs or want to sold leftovers. it'd be okay for me and probably for others if you'll be honest with your audience and just say: I don't use this camera and is not going to use in future, but it's still great and has their pros and cons.
I am always 100% honest with my audience. I have never been sent anything from Canon. I don’t think I am even on their radar. If I am sent something from a company either to keep or for loan I always disclose that.
You said it you self…. Micro HDMI, no ND, batterylife…. Well the answer is easy…. C-70 with a 0,71 Selling and then Buying the same cam 3 times is close to neurotic 😂
Very experienced R5C user ... the common hangups (besides no Clog2) are non-issues for me after a LOT of shooting. 1) Use a low profile cage (small rig black mamba) with a micro-hdmi clamp ... problem solved. 2) Battery ... use a small 11500mah PD bank with a long usb-c cable to your pocket or attach to your belt clip IF YOU WANT to keep the actual rig small, again use the rig's cable clamp for the usb-c and it won't move. Attach it to your rig if you want the extra weight ... and weight is good for handheld.
I love the R5C because I can keep it scaled down when I want ... and scale it up (rigging) when I need. You can't make the C70 smaller than it is, or any other Canon cinema camera for that matter. Sony's FX3/30 has this advantage too.
I agree with almost everything you said. I love mine and I'll continue to use with no deadline now.
And that's my poing: you mentioned that it's "old", based on a R5. But, youtuber aside, normal people don't have to change cameras every year. Once I have a camera that can do all I need, I'll keep it and use it. I used my 5Dmk3 for 11 years. Did I need 4k then? no, just good lenses and know how to use it.
My point is, seems that two years equipment is old nowadays, but it's far from true!

Couldn't agree more. When I started I got what I could afford and learned how to use it to its fullest potential, and I learned to get great video/photos. Then after some "success" I fell pray to the "newest" addiction. But then I stopped really knowing my gear like the back of my hand because I kept changing it so often. Now even though I am still successful and can afford to buy the latest and the greatest I am sticking with the R5 C because I want to know it forwards and backwards and it will last for many years. Plenty to still learn about, lighting, composition, and quality audio.

Motorsport Camera Operator here, I've got an R5C, after almost a year of owning one, I'm at the point where I reckon I'll pick up a second one as a B camera. I've grown to absolutely love almost everything about this camera minus the battery life and micro HDMI. after many shoots with it, I have purchased multiple V mount batteries which have made the battery issues no longer a problem. One Smallrig 100wh will last up to almost two full days if you're shooting 4k slow motion. Being a photographer previously, having both options makes it an absolute no-brainer to pick one of these up. just having both options within the one package makes life so much easier than buying a device dedicated to one or the other! I purchased a RF-EF lens adapter and have been using that and so far its worked really well with this camera!
for anyone wondering, the option "slow/fast motion (WAV)" will record audio into a separate folder from each shot (default location may send it to the SD card) with the filename for the video referenced in the name for the audio.

Hey Josh. I have two R5c cameras and they are fully rigged out. I have used them extensively for TV productions and they are outstanding. My clients have many times said how excellent the image is. I rigged them out, in part, to have my high end clients feel good...but I do love the matt box, monitors, cage, follow focus....etc...part of my R5c system when needed. And when I don't need all of those attachments, I still have a small portable camera that is excellent for video and stills. But truth is, so many great cameras out there that I know if had any of the major manufacturers, they would all perform beautifully. Just so invested in EF and RF and knowing the color and cinema menu inside and out. Thanks for the video(s).
Between the R5C and the Sony FX6, which one would you recommend?
@@eriksopracasa3449 my answer is biased but Canon. Like I said, I have so much glass and I know the system. No doubt the fx6 is excellent for many reasons. I think it comes down to the type of productions you do. Many of mine benefit from a small camera mounted to a gimbal for filming people or mounting system for filming cars etc. Plus I often do high end interviews that will air on tv…which both the Sony or the R5c can do very well. Sony would have the advantage for talking heads because of ND, XLR etc. But I have no problems with the Canon and personally prefer the colors straight out of camera. Plus I often have a camera on a mechanical slider. Smaller for that is easier. But on the flip side, my son is about to pull the trigger on either two fx6 or one fx6 and one fx3 cameras. And for me, I like the 8k option and great stills camera of the R5c over the Sony…and built in viewfinder.

I have a Sony A7IV which is great, but this would be for a really professional shoot for TV and I do love the Canon colors so I'm torn between getting the Canon and give it a try :-). Do you think it would be relatively easy to have b-roll footage coming from the A7IV and use the R5C as the main camera?
Great title for the vid Josh and I really enjoyed your chat about the R5C. In regards to that battery bracket from SmallRig, I personally would much prefer if it side mounted the battery on the left of the camera and not the screen. The viewfinder on the R5C is great, as is the screen and when doing lots of stuff, you don't really need a second monitor so a bracket that would mount just a battery like this on the side would be cool for me.

Actual hybrid shooter especially for aviation which is my main gig. This is my dream camera and for me far better than the R5. Though I know the R5 overheating issues have been “fixed” but when most of my shoots are in the summer on hot days no shade it’s nice knowing I don’t need to worry about it. I use the battery grip and just take a few LPE6 batteries because there is time between performers to change out when needed and sometimes I run a battery bank if I’m doing something on sticks. I also shoot equal parts photos so I need the resolution for cropping which we do a lot. Overall I’m probably some of the lucky few where this camera fits perfectly for what I do
Can you do a r5 vs r5c for video? Is the video quality between them very different?
I just bought one a few weeks ago. I used it with a Sigma Art 40mm. It is great for what it can do. I bought it for quick gigs. I have two C70s fully rigged for bigger jobs and films (also two XF605s). I see this camera as a mini C70 outside serving as a photo camera. I bought an anton bauer battery the camera can sit on with a dummy battery connection.
Once someone rigs this on for video, I cannot see anyone using it as a photo camera. Imagery is unbelievable. Clog2 is not a buzzer killer for me because I use Clog 3.

Own the C70, R5C and the R3 from canon...
Get the R5C + The battery grib and get in total 4 original batteries (2 sets)
Then you get the 1 tb angelbird cfexpress tybe b card and a 128 Gb angelbird V90 card...
Get the Fx lion v mount battery for backup and lon interview situations.. no rigging needed if you have the batterygrib but its good to have for backup on a tripod.
Its ment for shooting without a lot of rigging up.. the same with the C70 and the R3.
Zcam, komodo, bs1h cameras are ment for rigging up. :)

And the part with the no c-log 2 and all that is because they want to reuse the sensor for the new C500 mark 3 probably

The grib is amazing the camera is not ment for using without it... they should have included it in the price when you buy a R5C... the small batteries are not ment for Cinema cameras. @@unknownKnownunknowns I have the FX lion v mount battery mounted to my tripod to connect the camera to if needed by usb PD. but rarely use it.. and havent needed the 8K really.
I had the R5C, but ended up selling it and getting the c70 which is wayyy better for video. Sure it’s not full frame but paired with the canon speed booster it’s solid 🙌👌

Just bought the R5C and man it's incredible! I'm a gimbal user primarily and I can connect it straight to my RS3 Pro and the gimbal provides power to the camera for nearly 2 hours straight!!! Also, having just lens stabalization is huge on a gimbal because IBIS makes gimbal shots look worse.
Lack of Clog 2 is a non starter for me on this camera, but I am impressed by the improvements they have made with firmware!
Yeah no Clog 2 is a serious bummer, but for my use case, it doesn't matter.
I know its your opinion but why is everyone so crazy over it. Even WideDR is good for most stuff.

I’ve not found a huge difference between the updated clog-2 and RAW in terms of highlight rolloff. Still a welcomed update with room for improvement
None of the three are an issue on my end. I use external battery. Only shoot Clog 3. Use a cage. Use in a studio so ❤

I would definitely like to see a R5 vs R5 C comparison like you mentioned at 3:30. I've been going back and forth between those two because I can only afford to own one or the other. It would have been cool if they had kept the IBIS in the R5 C. The choice would be a no-brainer at that point. I mean I get why they didn't. But still, would have been cool because it would have made the R5 C the ultimate do-everything camera.
R5C has more dynamic range and all 4k options (not sure about 120Fps) are down sampled from 8k. The r5 60fps is pixel skipped
I’m actually contemplating moving from an R5 to R5C and one of the main reasons is I’d rather not have ibis all the time.
So I'm not a videographer myself so I'm curious as to your reasoning. Are there situations where the IBIS causes issues?@@brookscurran
@@rwdrummer the ibis is great for trying to imitate a locked off tripod style shot without one… but any time you’re doing gentle handheld movements it tries too hard to eliminate the intentional movement and makes the shots jump. It has a weird wobble with wide angle lenses as well. Unfortunately turning it off also turns off the lens stabilization so it’s either too much or nothing at all.
Get the R5C if you plan on doing a lot of video. R5 is very solid but R5C has the extra juice with video
For most of the video I thought you had bought a third R5C to go with your other two and I thought that was kind of crazy. Video made a lot more sense when I realized what you had actually done :) I love the R5C and use it in multi cam set ups, and will most likely be getting next generation in this price range whatever and whenever that comes out, but would need to have the issues you mentioned addressed before getting another one. I got this camera used but with under 100 shutter clicks, new box packaging and everything for 3800$. I was considering the R5 coming from an XT3 and I knew I wanted either camera. What sold me is the XFAVC, works wonders on my computer and super easy to grad in CLOG3 and export FAST!! Also the cinema features ie. Wave forms, vector scopes helps me nail exposure every time. I shoot hybrid so this is the perfect camera for me. I don’t do any major pro work, mainly document my travels and my 1 year old though her adventures but I can 100% see this camera as something I have for a LONG time with no need to upgrade. I recently watched a small short I did from UTAH in 4k and on my 82” 4k tv and it just looked phenomenal.
What I wish though it was from the start or canon could have made it it’s own thing.
- I think it should have been more of a mix between R5/3 what I mean by that is keep the R5 body but the battery grip should have accepted a larger maybe 1DXiii style battery to enable 8k60 raw.
- CLOG2 would have been money… esp for flying it on FPV or other shots a C70 is too big for.
- internal ND on the sensor
- FACE TRACKING 120p 4k please!

it works fantastic for video ans I feel I can go ALL day for video. However when plugged into the camera for video is it supposed to charge the camera? Or will it only charge when camera is turned off?
So yes it DOES charge the camera when the power is turned off... But I don't think it charges when the camera is ON and in photo mode unless it is but just not giving me the charging indicator because the screen is used by the photo information...
From what I understand it will only charge the internal battery when the camera is off.
curious what computer you are using. I sense that the lower bit rates on this ease the processing power requirements, which is a plus!

I'm working with a couple Sony shooters and they're quite impressed with the R5C. Being able to use Super35 cine lenses is a very underrated feature and something the FX3 and FX6 can't do.
Great point. I think you can shoot in S35 mode on the Sony cameras in 1080p though. But yeah for 4K, that's an advantage for sure!
Hello! Thank you for your work, it has helped me a lot in understanding the equipment I have and the equipment I want to buy. A crucial question that I have regarding the R5C and that I have a lot of difficulty finding is about the list of lenses compatible with the Electronic full-time MF option with the R5C. I have the EOS R6 and all my RF lenses support this mode. However, the latest cameras, such as the EOS R6 Mll and R8 do not have the same compatibility as the R6. When I discovered this, it was a huge blow to me, that newer cameras have less compatibility than an older model with the R6.
I follow the latest firmware updates and incredibly, none of them have increased the compatibility list with this mode. I particularly use this mode a lot, as it gives me the option to focus manually without having to touch the AF/MF button on the lens, which is a slow process and cannot be done without shaking the camera. So the Electronic full-time MF option is extremely useful for me, as I can change Focus modes while recording a take without any problems.
Could you help me figure out the R5C's lens compatibility with Electronic full-time MF mode? Do you use this mode? Thanks!
Just one thing: they did not improve the DR on the R5C in general. The issue with Netflix was the noise floor level, which made the camera not suitable for Netflix Originals production. What they did with the firmware was to have a slightly better signal on the noise floor in XF-AVC - which is the only accepted CODEC for this camera, that also benefits from having the 8K oversampling from the sensor with a derivable in 4K. You can't shoot RAW or MP4 for Netflix Originals, as these CODEC options still maintain the original noise floor level and haven't been worked out.
So... It has been pretty much an update in order to appeal to the crowd that use Cinema EOS cameras for Netflix Originals and drive sales/stop production from migrating to other systems. Sony did the same kind of thing to the FX3 and made it Netflix Approved after the initial launch of the camera, although their issues were altogether different.
I had heard it had to do with the highlight information. But if the update had to do with the noise in the shadows, either way that helps with dynamic range.
@@Josh_Sattin It does help with dynamic range, but it doesn't create DR out of nowhere. If you watch some technical tests from its sensor, you'll see that the DR was always there, even with CLog3, but the ground floor noise was too much that made it unacceptable by Netflix standards. What the firmware did was clean up this noise floor by using the XF-AVC oversampling of the image and having it really, really separate the ground floor stops of DR - which were a mess and had to be utterly altered in order to have a full separation. The sad part of it is that this is more of a "CODEC-centric" update, with the RAW and MP4 formats not benefitting from this update.
Funny thing is they probably could've add CLog2 to the camera, have a better separation of the DR stops at both ground level and highlights and become Netflix Approved without going through with the backlash they've received from the Netflix rejection becoming known to the public.
+1 on a R5 vs R5C video. I’m also having a tough time deciding on which one to get. Love the cinema features of the R5C but battery life and no IBIS got me worried. I don’t really mind adding a power bank solution but I don’t wanna be tethered to a gimbal for handheld use which is how I like to shoot on mirrorless cams. Would be sweet if you could compare static handheld shots with the RF 24-70mm with OIS turned on. If the R5C is stable enough I’d likely go that route!

I have almost bought the R5C 4 different times since it came out. Very compelling camera.
Heard that the Canon R5c doesn't do CLOG 2 because it doesn't have the sensor for it. You can shoot in RAW and convert to CLOG 2 but it's apparently faking it? Something like that. The dynamic range is simply not available. After experimenting with the Sirui anamorphic lenses, I wish they would update more options for the desqueeze to accommodate different kinds of anamorphic lenses.

I just bought the Canon R6 II 2 hours ago after testing it in rental. One point in favour was the clever AF for video. Agile handheld usage with an interesting IS IBIS for video. Also a beautiful and flowing image ... and I don't know if the R5C is better for the image .... and right now I prefer not to know :-)
I bought R6ii yesterday and I feel I should have bought the R5 for another 400$ used. Please change my mind 😂😭😭
@@debroy379 I think you have made the right choice unless you do photography and require large prints. The R6II is reliable, does not overheat too much, and has a nice autofocus for video. For video the R5C has more options, but I don't know about AF. on the R6II the combination of OIS and IBIS is truly smooth and intelligent for hand held content.

Hi Josh. This is Josh 😂. Thanks for that. I’ve been looking at getting one to use as an A cam to my current EOS R which will then become a B cam. I shoot canon for their glass. But man they make it hard to stay. They aren’t bringing out the glass I want quick enough like an L series 24 f1.4. And the nifty 16mm really should have been f1.8. And I’d love to see them bring out a cinema line camera that’s full frame 10 megapixels and c log 2. That’s competitive to the fx3. But I think I’m dreaming on that one. But I’ll stick to it. They are great cameras end of the day.
I have an R and bought the R5 C for the same reason. I absolutely love it. It makes the R look like a toy and I was always very much impressed by it already. I use the R5 C even more than my C70, which I also am deeply in love with.
I’m never selling my R5C 🤷🏾♂️ maybe if a R5C Mark 2 comes out💯

Professional real estate videographer here! I've always been interested in this camera but I held off for the same reasons you mentioned. But now adding a little more DR, a little better battery, I'm totally interested. I'm currently on the R6 Mark II which is pretty good for the RE photo/video, just wish it had more DR and not the best A Cam for higher end video gigs. Think there would be a significant difference? And also pair well with the R6 ii? Not in the 8K modes, just 4K CLOG3. Awesome breakdown Josh!
I'd say go for it if the limitations on battery life don't get in your way too much. For higher end video gigs I would recommend it because of the image quality from the 8k sensor. I have mine rigged for handheld and tripod work paired with the R6 as a B cam but I've really been eyeing the r6 mark ii as my gimbal/B cam due to the improved features.

10:03 there's even a kind of better battery from SmallRig 4323 that's Manfrotto 501 compatible.
The only thing that it lacks it's just poor design and it doesn't clamp down very well on the fluid head Manfrotto, and also doesn't clamp down on the Crane 4 Gimbal
it also shoots 6k raw hq on s35 mode

I've been experimenting with the 8K raw and yeah you can't edit it too efficiently. Although the ability to record proxies in camera is pretty awesome. Proxy workflows are something I'm getting used to with my new R5C. I have a threadripper workstation CPU and it's still chugs on most codecs.
I use 2k XF-AVC proxies when shooting raw with the R5c. Using Resolve on a 2017 iMac. The proxy workflow seems fairly simple and takes the headache out of working with raw.
AMD are know for not being good at decoding and encoding Video codecs - Apple or Intel (anything 2023 onwards)
@@TheMindfulRonin you'd be very surprised to hear that I upgraded to an i9 and 4090... Premiere Pro is still having issues with MXF files from the Canon R5C. My fix for it is temporarily shooting all intra MXF. It plays back in full quality 4K no problem. Unfortunately I literally built a new computer to try to fix this issue. Adobe is on my short list for products I will replace when I can.
Hi Josh, and thanks for the perspective. When it comes to the newly added Canon 709 picture profile, are the parameters on this or any of the other custom picture settings adjustable in camera? By adjustable I am referring to sharpness, contrast, and saturation, or can this only be done in post? Many thanks for your help on this.

would love to know your thoughts on SF Mode autofocus. I shoot sports mainly and I struggle to understand why when I shoot 4K120 the autofocus is much worse than when I shoot 4K60. Perhaps its the oversampling in 4k60 that makes things look better(minus the fast moving balls); that said; I did find it interesting that with the addition of the Digital Zoom in later FW; when I do zoom in digitally, the focus is better in 4k120 than when I would use a normal zoom (eg rf2.8 70-200). (The focus box even gets larger); would love to know why. If you have any tips/tricks you may have for fast action 4K120 shooting (With multiple subjects like football or lacrosse eg not dirt bikes or skateboarders that canon has highlighted).
Would also love to hear about the autofocus performance in 4k 120

I believe Canon's app will work for specific formats but not all, e.g. 1080 p but not 4k for example.

Hi Josh, you seem to know everything about the R5c. I’m thinking of buying one but have one requirement that no one can help me with. Basically I would like to use a remote shutter cord to set focus on myself in the video mode, with the assistance of Canon Camera app on my iPad. This function works well in the video mode on the R6 and the R5 but I know that R5c has a different setup for cinema. So: I plug in the remote shutter cord in the appropriate slot, set the focus area on the Cannon Camera app, then press the remote control button. Will this set the focus in the selected focus area? I don’t want to use AF because it can be a bit jumpy. Thank you for your time, Alan

I haven't spent enough time with HDR PQ. From what I have experienced and seen, I would shoot Clog3.

Josh. Love your channel. R5C apparently records in lower bit rates than the R5 . This should help with quicker processing and/or lower computing power requirements, right?
Thank you. I don't think the bitrate will matter that much. I believe they are mostly H.265 codecs which are tough on older computers. I have a M1 Mac Studio and don't have issues with any of the footage on either camera other than the raw.

Hey Josh, following up.. I run an older version of Premier 2021... and I'm trying to find the BEST solution to export the 8k Raw footage to a playable media file. I don't shoot 8k much but I would like to experiment with it just on random shoots and footage ect. I've tried a few settings and just of course takes years to export with my current machine but I just want something reliable that I can play back on my PC or transfer to my ipad to play.
I thought I found a solution however it wont play in VLC, or windows media player. It's kind of pointless I think to shoot in 8k and then put into a 4k sequence but maybe it just has something to do with my only having a 1080 monitor and just don't have the CPU to play it. I tried it on my 4k TV and same thing, unplayable. It's an Mp4 file too.
Josh could you please advise me on the best video settings ? There are lots of different custom picture profiles. I’m a newbie’s and I don’t know which one to choose. I want to get best picture quality from this camera and beautiful colours. My preference is to film in 8K 60fps
If you are shooting in 8K60 there really aren't many options. This will record in raw.

Josh, we are thinking on the same wavelength. I currently own an R5C and a C70 that I use with cinema glass and autofocus using lidar WITHOUT the gimbal 🙂Will be making a video about this coming up. My question for you is do you think it is possible for Canon to disable the setting in their cameras that forces crop mode when a super35 lens is attached? I think it is ridiculous that you cannot change it either. There is a lot of glass out there that is rated at super35 but actually has an image circle that can cover full frame. I currently have a Sigma 30mm F1.4 Art EF Super35 lens that covers full frame and is sharper then most of my canon glass except my 100-500 L lens. I use the Sigma on the R5C but I have to untwist the lens a few millimeters to sever the connection and then it is a manual lens at that point and I do not get the crop. As soon as I lock it, it jumps to crop mode. Now in video it does not do this and everything works. Only on the photo side does this setting enable and lock. Curious on your thoughts. Keep up the good work.
Thanks! The R5C doesn't force you into S35 when using a S35 lens. I just tried the Sigma 18-35 on the R5C. The mirrorless cameras do that and it is really annoying. Do I think Canon will change this? Probably not.
@@JapaneseMonster You can send a DM on Instagram if you want. I am using the basic Canon EF-RF passthrough adapter. Yes this makes sense that it automatically changes in photo and not video. That's the mirrorless operating system in photo and the cinema operating system in video. Quirks of the Canon systems.

R5 and R5C have identical performance in photos other than the R5C does not have IBIS and the R5 does. R5C is a way more capable video camera than the R5.

I don't remember as I am often rotating cameras. I think it was shot on my RED Komodo.
The dedicated cinema camera, is always better in the long run, than anyting else.

Any tips on how to get my R5 & R5C looking best when colour matching? I’m both shooting in CLog 3 and try to expose the same with the same white Allende preset.

Once you get a hang of it you can start working on matching cameras. R5 and R5C shouldn't be too difficult.
I bought it recently and sent It back recently. The dynamic range is still not up to par imo and the battery is nuts… It’s a beautiful camera but there are better cameras out there…
.. Do you mind if you could test a Feiyutech Scorp Pro on the lastest R5c firmware to check that it dosen't lock up the camers when you push record mode..
Feiytech say they tested it and never had an issue ...but mine locks up.
I presume it is extremely hard to damage the usb port on thr camera so I expect a firmware issue.

Micro HDMI is way smaller and thus can easily break or not work correctly. It is very easy to bump the cable and damage the plug and/or the port on the camera. Full size is more reliable.
I'm getting super confused because when I record on the Ninja V+ it has an option for C log 2. I noticed no matter what log profile I pick on the Ninja the videos do not match the quality in the camera. Driving me a little bit insane. Now I am recording on the camera and the Ninja until I figure out the best settings on the Ninja. The audio quality is so much better from the Ninja. That's the reason I wanted to record with it and increased storage with the SSDs.
I believe the option you are seeing has to do with the display LUTs on the Ninja. If you are using the R5C, there is no reason to record in the Ninja. It's an extra point of failure and the CFExpress B cards are cheap nowadays.
@@Josh_Sattin I wouldn't say they are cheap lol. A 1 TB SSD is sitting on my office desk not being used. A CF Express type B card cost 200 for 128 GB. That is 3 minutes in 8K 60. Lol they are going on sale more. You are right about that. I was looking for it to simplify the workflow but made it more difficult. I'm thinking about getting an external recorder for audio at events in the future.
If you are using cinema gamut, the video from the Atomos may not match correctly. My when I use a Ninja V with the R5, I need to use 709 or 2020 for the color to match the internal card. I haven’t tried it with my R5 C but I assume it’s the same.
Is full frame in video/cinema the Same as IMAX format?
No. The full frame video modes on this camera are DCI (17:9) or UHD (16:9)
Josh, those projects of yours that you keep mentioning, and to which you associate experience with certain cameras, why don't you show us some examples for us to see? I assume that your projects are not a walk in the forest where you film yourself.

If your doing more video and want higher dynamic range, why don’t you use the C70?

R5 C clog 3 and cinema gamut has been a huge disappointment for me in Resolve. If I shoot Canon Raw light or Canon´s own codec and have Resolves color management on, the resulting image is very washed out. On Sony FX6 and RED the image is way better with just gamut and gamma applied. For example slog3 3 and sgamut3.cine in Sony´s case. Has anyone else run into this problem and how have you solved it? I know I can futher grade the image and off course I do it, but seems strage that Canon´s engineers have left the image so terribly washed out after applying gamut and gamma.
Still think the regular r5 is better.
If you could only pick one camera between the r5c and the fx3, which one you would pick?

Run and gun guerrilla type / doc footage indoor in light changing environments to outdoor changing environments as well. All natural or environmental lighting

Is anyone using the R5C for hybrid sports/ action shooting? Would love to know your thoughts. My R5 overheated several times this summer during critical outdoor games in 4k 60p crop mode - couldn't have been worse timing.
I’ve shot 3-4 games a day with about , 45 min games outside this summer in 95+degrees full sun. Had anywhere between 45-90 between games. Never over heated like my old r5. I mainly shoot 4k120 but one of them was 4k60 as I am still trying to understand why that’s more sharp .

I liked this video, but. No offence, but guys does anyone believe that you actually "bought" this camera for the third time? I mean this is very clear that you release such videos when Canon needs it. Now they've released a new firmware update and want to sold more R5Cs or want to sold leftovers. it'd be okay for me and probably for others if you'll be honest with your audience and just say: I don't use this camera and is not going to use in future, but it's still great and has their pros and cons.
I am always 100% honest with my audience. I have never been sent anything from Canon. I don’t think I am even on their radar. If I am sent something from a company either to keep or for loan I always disclose that.

I use the R5C a lot with Sigma lenses and the Canon EF-RF adapter and they work great.
